EDITOR S CHOICE Cometh The Hour, Cometh The Man National B Division School Premier League 1 Final Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup

This was it. 2 rain delays and 100 minutes had resulted in a 2-2 draw, and penalty kicks were now needed to determine the winner. Marc Ryan Tan Wei Ming, Singapore Sports School s fourth kicker, quietly stood over the penalty spot. Muhammad Nur Adam Abdullah, Muhammad Ryaan Sanizal and Ashley Yong Cheng Wai had already converted from 12-yards to give Sports School a 3-2 advantage over Meridian Secondary School. With Meridian having missed two of their penalties, Marc knew a successful spot kick would see Sports School crowned National B Division School Premier League 1 Champions. He took a deep breath, and began his run up as he opted for power over finesse. And like so many times this season, the ball hit the back of the net after leaving the forward s foot. This goal on 20 April however, was more significant. After all, Marc s penalty sealed a 4-2 penalty win, and more importantly, Sports School s seventh National Schools title in 11 years. I have scored over 15 goals this season, but I will remember this one the most. I will definitely treasure this experience forever, Sports School s top scorer said. Victory however, did not come easily after our footballers went behind twice in the game. They narrowly avoided defeat when Adam curled a free kick in the last minute of regulation time to cap a man-of-the-match performance at the Jalan Besar Stadium, after Abdul Rasaq Ishiekwene Akeem had a goal sandwiched between two Meridian efforts. I had actually hit the post earlier in the game, so I was quite confident of getting the shot on target. Besides, it was already injury time, so I knew I needed to score, Adam said. Despite the win and the efforts of his teammates, Marc found time to pay tribute to the supporters.

I may have scored, but credit must go to our supporters, Marc said, their cheers from the sidelines really encouraged us to the last minute. They were our twelfth man. Our Under-16 footballers followed that victory by winning the inaugural Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup on 6 May at the Singapore Sports Hub. They beat the Selangor Combined Schools 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 at full time.

SPOTLIGHT Reuben s Awesome Foursome National Inter-Schools Track and Field Championships Jenny Lim Head, Cluster 3 Senior General Manager, Track and Field Academy

It was déjà vu for Reuben Rainer Lee Siong En after he repeated his 2016 heroics to win 4 gold medals at the 2017 Schools National Track and Field Championships. Despite competing in the B Division for the first time, Reuben was not fazed by his older opponents as he clinched gold in the 100m, 200m, 4x100 and 4x400m at the Championships from 6 to 28 April. My double four gold haul is definitely a boost to my confidence and I hope to carry this form into the upcoming International Children s Games in Kaunas. My idol is Olympic gold medallist and 400m world record holder Wayde Van Niekerk from South Africa. He has proved that you do not need to be from America or Jamaica to excel in sprinting, and this has fuelled my conviction that anything is possible as long as you work hard, Reuben said. As if winning four gold medals to become Sports School s most bemedalled student-athlete at the Meet was not impressive enough, Reuben also recorded a personal best in the 200m sprint. Moreover, Reuben s achievement means he has emulated the double four gold haul achieved by fellow student-athlete Diane Hilary Pragasam (2016, 2015). Diane narrowly missed out on a three-peat after she won three gold medals and a silver at this year s edition. Although Reuben did not break any championship records, three of his seniors managed to do so. Tia Louise Rozario got the ball rolling after she rewrote the A Division Girls Championship and Schools Long Jump record, before Celeste Goh Jia Rui followed suit to break the A Division Girls 400m record twice, in the heats and in the finals. Cherlin Sia Jia Yi added one more in the Pole Vault Open Division category. Tia and Celeste were also part of the A Division girls team which clinched 8 medals and won Sports School s first ever A Division relay medals en route to finishing 4th in the A Division Girls standings a remarkable feat considering they could only draw from a pool of five student-athletes.

Altogether, Sports School s 77 student-athletes brought home 25 golds, 14 silvers and 13 bronze medals along with 3 competition records. Our C Division Boys and B Division Girls also finished 2nd in their division. 15 SPORTS BADMINTON Four In A Row For Sports School National Inter-School Badminton Championships Desmond Tan General Manager, Badminton Academy

Singapore Sports School showed their strength in depth when they overcame injuries to win their fourth consecutive National Inter School Badminton Championships B Division Boys crown at the Jurong East Sports Centre. As if the blow of losing captain Aaron Yong Chuan Shen to a pre-tournament knee injury was not enough, our shuttlers were also without the services of Wesley Koh Eng Keat after he suffered a foot injury. Yet these did not matter as our student-athletes swept Raffles Institution 5-0 to clinch the title on 18 April. In fact, such was their dominance that they only dropped two games throughout the tournament. I am elated to have been part of this. After all, not many schools can win a National Schools title for four years in a row. However, while my teammates played really well, we must continue working hard to bring Sports School further glory, Aaron said. Our female shuttlers also emerged triumphant in their respective divisions after they recorded 4-1 victories against Singapore Chinese Girls School in the C Division Girls final and Raffles Girls School in the older category. Meanwhile, our Badminton Academy narrowly missed out on a third consecutive Grand Slam after our C Division Boys fell 2-3 to Anglo Chinese School (Independent) and had to settle for the silver medal. Nonetheless, there is still much to be proud of as this is the fourth straight year our Academy has won at least three National titles, a run which began in 2014.

BOWLING Double Doubles Gold In 'A' Division Bowling National Schools A Division Bowling Championships Shirley Tan Team Mum It was a cold and dark morning. Thunder, lightning, strong winds and heavy rain swept over most parts of Singapore. In a bus sat four male student-athletes and their bowling equipment, and their coaches, heading for Temasek Club to compete in the National Schools Bowling Championships "A" Division Boys' Doubles event.

About 200 metres from the competition venue, the bus slowed down... and rolled to a stop. A huge tree had fallen across the road and caused the rest of Rifle Range Road to become impassable to man or wheels. The team alighted and joined members of the public who were staring at the fallen tree and talking among themselves. "Why don't we break the smaller branches and create an opening?" Jarred Lim Jia Le asked his teammates after assessing the situation. A member of the public overheard him and suggested that there were ants and they could be bitten. A policeman said that NParks had been notified and help was on the way. It was approaching 7.30 am and the team had to report at the bowling centre by 8 am or risk being disqualified. James Stuart Lowe Heng Leong agreed with Jarred's idea and together with Aidan Poh and Oh Han Qin, looked around for a suitable spot to start clearing the debris. They twirled some branches, they "tunnelled" through and soon, the four bowlers found themselves on the other side of the fallen tree. "Luckily, we went to Outward Bound Singapore and learnt a thing or two," James laughed out loud. The four student-athletes returned to the other side of the tree and started to bring their bowling bags through the clearing, and then helped the public get past the debris. The Aidan-Jarred pairing finished their combined 12 games with a total of 2,458 pinfalls, while the Han Qin-James partners knocked over 2,377 pins on 19 April They had done their best, and being unseeded teams, had to wait until the late morning of 24 April 2017 for the seeded teams to finish their games before knowing the final results. Deservedly, Aidan and Jarred won the gold medal; Han Qin and James came in 6th behind three pairs from ACJC and one pair from ACS Independent - just 39 pins from the bronze medal team. Furthermore, news of the quartet s actions saw them capture the hearts of the nation. Apart from interviews with the local press, the video of the four bowlers was also shared over 200 times on Facebook. Some of the more prominent individuals to have shared it include Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong and Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. Kimberly Neo Kah Min and Charmaine Chang Yu Quan also did well to win the gold medal in the Girls' Doubles event after an uncharacteristic start of a combined total of 285 pins in their first game. Difficult though it was to catch up, they did not give up and fought frame after frame to finish with 2,290 pinfalls - ahead of TJC (2,267) and ACJC (2,206). Our second pair of Rachael Tan Soo Hui and table tennis player

Hui Fen Bowls Over Obstacles At Thailand Open 2017 MWA-Singha Thailand International Open New Hui Fen ended a fruitful year in 2016, clinching the Professional Women s Bowling Association Tour Championship trophy and adding the title of Rookie of the Year to her collection of awards. However, a knee injury sustained in December hampered her bowling career, keeping her away from competition in the first few months of Yet, as quickly as she could return to the lanes, she was determined to leave no doubters in the stand. The national kegler bagged her first win for the year at the 43rd MWA-Singha Thailand International Open on 15 April 2017, defeating Malaysia s Syaidatul Afifah in the Women s Open Masters Stepladder Finals to clinch the coveted trophy. The Singapore Sports School Bowling Academy alumna completed the qualifying rounds with the second highest pinfalls, advancing straight into the Round 3 Finals. She subsequently recorded 1,308 pinfalls over six games to gain a 54-pin lead over her closest rival and eventual runner-up to sail into the Stepladder Finals. Hui Fen sealed the deal with just one match, striking four times in the last three frames to secure the title with over her Malaysian opponent.

FENCING Girls Top 3 In Singapore Seniors 2017 Singapore Senior Fencing Championships Singapore Sports School s female fencers did the school proud at the 2017 Singapore Senior Fencing Championships from 29 to 30 April 2017 when they won a bronze medal in each of the weapon categories. In the Women s Epee, Sihan advanced into the Semi-Finals after defeating teammate Siti Nursuhailah Selamat and alumna Cheryl Lim. However, her journey to the top was halted by Harlene Raguin of Philippines, losing

Tatiana also had a smooth first round in the Women s Foil, defeating Singaporean Felicia Tan The foilist then advanced to meet national fencer Lau Ysien in the Quarter-Finals where she proved superior to take the match after a hard-fought Tatiana eventually lost to Nunta Chantasuvannasin of Thailand in the Semi-Finals. Kar Moon faced a similar fate in the Women s Sabre, with one victory over Candice Lee (15-13) but a semi-final loss against Jolie Lee (5-15) meant that she had to settle for a joint-third position. 25 GYMNASTICS Leah Qualifies For ASEAN School Games 2017 National Schools (Rhythmic) Gymnastics Championships Serena Wong Acting General Manager, Individual Programme To Leah Chew, the scenario was simple. Perform well at the 2017 National Schools (Rhythmic) Gymnastics Championships on 13 April and she would earn a chance to compete at the ASEAN School Games in June. However, a stress fracture in her foot sustained in February meant the National School Games would commence with her having just three weeks of training. Nonetheless, she pushed through the pain barrier to win an Individual All-Around silver and book her place at the AEAN School Games. My parents have been encouraging me to work hard to qualify for the ASEAN School Games, so this will make them very happy, the Secondary 3 student-athlete said.

In a strong show of consistency, Leah was the only gymnast who finished on the podium in all four categories, a credible achievement considering her injury had forced the 14-year-old to move away from her usual routines. Leah eventually finished the meet with silver medals in the Ball, Hoop and Ribbon categories along with a bronze in the Clubs routine to narrowly miss out on the gold medal by points at the Bishan Sports Hall. I am very pleased with myself since I had just recovered from my injury, Leah said, I will work hard to be near my peak and make Singapore proud at the ASEAN School Games. 28 NETBALL Netballers Return To B Division Final Schools National B Division Netball Championship Lee Min Li Head, Cluster 2 Senior General Manager, Netball Academy The season may not have ended the way they wanted it to, but our netballers can hold their heads high after leading Sports School back where they belong in the final of the Schools National B Division

Netball Championship on 20 April. Our girls beat Saint Hilda s Secondary School after a hard fought semi-final to advance to the championship round where they fell to defending champions CHIJ (Toa Payoh). Despite the loss at the OCBC Arena Hall 1, Academy co-captains Rishika Ghanamoorthy and Nicole Shin Jia Hui as well as vice-captain Germaine Au Shi Tong felt there were many positives from their season which saw them return to the final after a one-year absence. I am very proud of my teammates because we all gave our best. We played very good defence to force multiple turnovers from CHIJ. This was particularly so in the third quarter where we really took the game to our opponents, Germaine said. Her thoughts were also echoed by Rishika, who hoped her juniors would be able to remember the lessons and win the title next year. Similarly, Nicole too felt the performances of her teammates have provided the Academy with many reasons to be optimistic. Our juniors are very skilled, and if they continue to work hard, they can definitely succeed where we did not. After all, you can see an upward trend after we finished third in 2015 and second this year, Nicole said. Despite their strong showings, the trio know much of the credit for their performances must go to the staff at Sports School. All this would not have been possible without the support of our coaches, Mr Wilson Ang Wee Tong (Assistant Director, Sports), as well as sports science team who always ensured we were in our optimum condition. We must also thank our General Manager, Mdm Lee Min Li. She never gave up on us, and her confidence in my teammates and I spurred us to work harder and validate her belief, Rishika said.

PENCAK SILAT Medals Galore For Pencak Silat Exponents 2017 Bekasi Open, UNJ Open, Belgium Open Pencak Silat Championship, UTHM International Silat Championship We know that the competition season is in full swing for Singapore Sports School s past and present Pencak Silat student-athletes when they have competed in four tournaments, in three countries, in just over two weeks. And they have done the nation proud. Secondary student-athletes Abdul Raazaq Abdul Rashid, Aiman Hazim Zainal Abidin, Muhammad Affiz

Mohamed Zakri (Secondary 4) and Siti Fathimah Mohamad Shahrem (Secondary 2) produced the first set of good news when they collected 2 silver and 2 bronze medals from the 2017 Bekasi Open in Jakarta from 20 to 24 April. Their good run in Jakarta continued immediately after at the 5th UNJ Open. Eight student-athletes proved that their opponents were no match for them as they clinched 5 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze in the six-day tournament which concluded on 29 April. Aiman and Fathimah successfully added medals to their collection once again, medalling in their respective weight classes in the Match event. Shortly after, three post-secondary student-athletes and alumni crossed the Causeway for the 8th UHTM International Silat Championship from 2 to 7 May. Brothers Muhammad Haziq and Nujaid Hasif Zainal Abidin proved yet another successful pairing when they won the Men s Artistic Doubles event. Hamillatu Arash Juffrie joined Haziq and Hasif to finish third in the Artistic Team. Meanwhile, eight student-athletes and alumni were fighting hard in Schoten, Belgium. 32 SAILING Cecilia Sails Through To Spain 2017 Sailing World Cup Series Singapore Sports School alumnus Cecilia Low Rui Qi and partner Kimberly Lim have earned qualification into the third and final leg of the 2017 Sailing World Cup Series in Santander, Spain in June. The duo finished Leg 2 of the regatta on 30 April 2017 in 9th place in a fleet of 20 boats in the Women s 49er FX. They beat Japanese pair Chika Hatae and Hiroka Itakura who ranked 10th at the end of the eight-day competition. This achievement ranked them as the top Asian sailor in the second leg of the World Cup Series in Hyeres, France, putting them through to the final leg from 4 to 11 June. Cecilia and Kimberly have begun their campaign for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Their 9th-place finish in Spain gave them a boost in the World Sailing rankings, moving them up seven positions to World No.15. Fellow alumnus and Rio 2016 Olympian Griselda Khng is in No. 21. Cecilia, a World Champion in the Women s 420 Class, entered the SWC Leg 2 after winning the Women s 49erFX bronze medal at the 48th Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR in Spain on 1 April.

SHOOTING Adele s Shot To Gold 2017 Southeast Asian Shooting Association Championship

Singapore Sports School student-athletes and alumni shone at the 41st Southeast Asian Shooting Association Championship, winning a dozen medals 4 golds, 6 silvers and 2 bronzes at the annual regional competition from 3 to 12 May Post-secondary student-athlete Adele Tan Qian Xiu was one of Sports School s top performers at the Kuala Lumpur event, bagging 2 gold medals in the individual and team Women s 10m Air Rifle events. Winning both individual and team gold medals in the senior category is testament to the training plan Coach Lim Chea Rong has planned for me. The overseas training opportunity in Dortmund, Germany also contributed to my performance as we benefited from gun maintenance and pellet customisation services, said Adele. This competition was regarded as a trial for the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games. Knowing that I had to do well, I put an unreasonable amount of pressure on myself, which turned out to have a negative effect on my performance. As such, I did not do well in the qualifiers. Coach Chea Rong and I realised it immediately after the qualifiers and we tried to rectify the situation. With her guidance and mental coaching, I was able to regain my calmness and recollect my thoughts for the final. The Year 6 shooter on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme maintained her composure in the final to tip Olympian Jasmine Ser to the individual title. Adele triumphed in the Final shootout with points to Jasmine s points. The most crucial factor behind winning the Individual title in a demanding final was staying strong mentally. Coach Chea Rong and I have been working extremely closely together at each training and competition session to strengthen myself mentally. This year s SEASA Final was a platform where Coach and I successfully performed at every shot. I hope to be able to maintain such form at the upcoming ISSF World Cup in Munich and Gabala, and Junior World Championships in Suhl. Adele also teamed up with alumnus Martina Lindsay P Veloso and Jasmine to shoot to a Team gold. Martina followed up the 10m Air Rifle Team gold with two more medals in Team events Women s 50m

In the Women s Junior 10m Air Rifle individual event, IBDP Year 5 s Ho Xiu Yi and Secondary 3 s Fernel Tan Qian Ni finished 2nd and 3rd. However, the bronze medal went to Rosli Nur Izazi of Malaysia who came in 6th, due to the Championship rule that no country can have more than one medallist per event. The male rifle shooters also rose to the occasion, contributing a Team gold and Team silver in the senior and junior 10m category respectively. Not to be outdone, Sports School s junior pistol shooters also posted top 3 finishes, while pistol coach Nigel Lim Swee Hon won 1 silver and 2 bronzes. 37 Xiu Yi Shoots Down Record National Inter-School Shooting Championships Koh Aik Beng Senior General Manager, Shooting Academy Ho Xiu Yi will be the first to admit 2017 has not gone the way she wanted it to. Not only was her national record broken, but she has also struggled for form in the past few months as she failed to qualify for the upcoming Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games. But Xiu Yi put that aside to finish the recent National Inter-School Shooting Championships with 2 gold medals and set two new A Division records in the process. While I am pleased about the medals and the records, I am happier with my performance as I managed to shoot 10s from my sighting to my last shot which is one of my best performances in my shooting career, she said. Xiu Yi s strong finish at SAFRA Yishun enabled her to shoot a championship record score of in the Air Rifle A Division Girls Individual event category and finish ahead of teammate Adele Tan Qian Xiu. Furthermore, her combined scores with fellow International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme student-athletes Adele and Lenice Tan Yue Tong were also enough to give Sports School the Air Rifle A Division Girls Team crown and record. After missing out on qualification for the SEA Games, I just told myself to treat the National School Games as an opportunity for a fresh start, Xiu Yi said. Similarly, the quartet of Emmanuel Chan En Yue, Marcus Ngeh Wei Ming, Muhammad Izzat Junaidie and Ryan Dayne Phang emulated their seniors to rewrite the Air Rifle B Division Boys Team record and win the event. Izzat also clinched the Air Rifle B Division Boys Individual crown to match Xiu Yi s two-gold haul from

SWIMMING Mitchell Unfazed By Family Name 2017 National Schools Swimming Championships Ng Kok Wei Senior General Manager, Swimming Academy

Maximillian Ang Wei s potential is well known within the local swimming fraternity. Among his many achievements are gold medals at various international competitions such as the 2016 International Children s Games and 2016 Asian Schools Swimming Championships. Furthermore, the 16-year-old was Sports School s top performer at the 2017 National Schools Swimming Championships where he won 2 golds and 2 bronzes. He also rewrote the 200m breaststroke meet record with a time of 2: Maximillian however, was not the only one in the Ang family making waves at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Whisper it quietly, but members of the public might need to start recognising the name of his younger brother Mitchell Ang Li. Not only did he break Owen Teo Bo En s National Schools 200m backstroke record to win the event with a time of 2:18.97, he also added 3 silvers to his trophy cabinet. This is one of my most prestigious achievements, and it makes me want to work harder to accomplish more, just as Maximillian has, Mitchell said. While some might bristle at the thought of being in the shadow of a more accomplished sibling, Mitchell is more thrilled at watching Maximillian train on a daily basis. Maximillian is my inspiration. I am always impressed with his will to win and his determination to improve even before a coach tells him to. I want to emulate his attitude, Mitchell said.

In fact, Maximillian is not the only swimmer in the family which Mitchell can emulate, with father Melvyn a former National swimmer who once held the National Men s 100m breaststroke record. Yet Mitchell remains unfazed by having such a strong swimming pedigree in his family and is more excited at the prospect of creating a swimming legacy. While it does feel pressurising at times, it only makes me want to work harder. I want people to notice the Ang family name, just like how national swimmers Quah Ting Wen, Quah Zheng Wen and Quah Jing Wen have made the Quah family name famous. Besides, I can always go to my family when I need any swimming advice, Mitchell said. Maximillian and Mitchell however, were not the only ones to have broken records from 17 to 21 April. Secondary 1 student-athlete Clydi Chan, who coincidentally has a brother studying in Sports School, rewrote the C Division Girls 200m Freestyle record after clocking s in the heats. She followed that by winning the gold medal a day later by an impressive seconds. Her time of was also faster than the times clocked by the winners in the A and B Divisions. Clydi eventually finished the meet with 4 medals to contribute to Sports School s overall tally of 6 golds, 18 silvers and 14 bronzes, giving them the 2nd runner-up position in the overall standings of the C and B Divisions in both the Boys and Girls categories. 46 TABLE TENNIS Confidence The Key For Pearlyn 2017 National Inter-School Table Tennis Championships Dave Lai General Manager, Table Tennis

Many of today s athletes are susceptible to dips in form, and Pearlyn Koh Kai Xin is no different. With her poor form heading into the National Inter-School Table Tennis Championships affecting her confidence, winning the title on 18 April was the furthest thing on her mind. All she wanted was to rediscover the form which made her top seed at the championships. Ultimately, it would be a pre-tournament pep talk which would be the catalyst to her 3-1 victory over Dorothea Ban of Raffles Girls School to clinch the B Division Girls Singles crown at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls School. My teammates reminded me to adopt a match by match approach and not look to far ahead. My morale was further boosted when General Manager Dave Lai reassured me I stood a good chance of winning as long as I played to my usual standard Pearlyn said. There was also more good news for the Secondary 4 student-athlete after she teamed up with Goi Rui Xuan, Jassy Tan Li Lin, Lew Yen Lin, Lu Hua Yu, Tan Ker Hui and Wong Xin Ru to beat RGS and take the B Division Girls Team trophy. Such was their dominance this season that our girls won all their matches without dropping a game en route to the title. I am very pleased to be able to bring glory to the school. Credit must go to our juniors who showed tremendous courage even though it was their first time competing in the B Division, Pearlyn said. On top of the titles in the B Division Girls category, the quartet of Tay Hui Li, Beh Kun Ting, Andy Wong Yan Kai and Liu Sijia all triumphed in their respective individual events to help Sports School end the National Schools campaign with 5 Individual and 1 Team title. 49 TAEKWONDO Brandon s Awesome April National Schools Taekwondo Championships Kepong Open Invitational Championships Serena Wong Acting General Manager, Individual Programme It was a good month for Brandon Low Sze Sheng after he ended April with a hat-trick of medals from two tournaments. The sequence of medals began on 17 April where he clinched a C Boys Poomsae Poom Belt Individual bronze at the National Schools Taekwondo Championships before winning 2 gold medals at the Kepong Open Invitational Championships on 28 April. The Secondary 2 student-athlete emerged victorious in the Individual and Team Poomsae events in Kuala Lumpur to expand his trophy cabinet in what was just his second ever overseas competition. Competitions are good learning experiences for me. For example, I lacked rhythm at the National Schools, so I made a conscious effort to improve my accuracy at my later competition in Kepong and I am glad it paid off, he said. Despite his recent successes, the 14-year-old is keenly aware that his recent competitions are mere stepping stones for him.

I will compete in the Junior category next year which means I will be facing more experienced opponents, and as such, I cannot be content and must continue to work hard, Brandon said. 51 TRACK AND FIELD Wendy s Great Leap Into Record Books 2017 Singapore Open Track and Field Championships Singapore Sports School s past and present student-athletes made it an exciting two days at the 79th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships, pitting their speed, strength and skills against competitors in the international meet. Over 27 and 28 April 2017, student-athletes and alumni garnered 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals. Both gold medals were won by Singapore s sprint queen Veronica Shanti Pereira in the 100m and 200m events. The alumnus flew Singapore s flag high from Day 1 of the competition. In the Women s 200m, Shanti stopped the clock at 23.87s, a mere 0.07s ahead of Malaysia s Zaidatul Husni Zulkifli, to grab 1st place. She followed up her strong performance with another gold medal in the Women s 100m on 28 April, as well as a silver in the Women s 4x100m Relay. Sports School alumni Dipna Lim Prasad and Wendy Enn made it a finish in the century sprint, crossing the line in 12.25s and 12.34s respectively. Wendy also had a fruitful outing at the Singapore Open, taking home three medals 2 silvers and 1 bronze and a new National Record all within a day of competition.

Having trained in the Triple Jump for just over a year, Wendy hopped, stepped and jumped into the record books, setting a new Women s National Record of 12.05m and becoming the first Singaporean woman to cross the 12m mark. Her distance, achieved on the fifth jump of the Women s Final, broke the previous record of 11.94m set by Lynette Lim two years prior. Wendy finished second of two competitors in the Triple Jump. Shortly after completing her jumps, Wendy went on to clinch the 100m bronze medal and a silver in the 4x100m Relay with Shanti, Dipna and post-secondary student-athlete Nur Izlyn Zaini. 53 CHARACTER Sports Is A Long Term Commitment Lessons From The Champions

There was a buzz of anticipation on 8 May when Rio 2016 Paralympic bronze medallist Theresa Goh visited Singapore Sports School as part of the Lessons From The Champions series. Among the lessons she shared with the student-athletes was the importance of persevering in spite of the lack of early success in one s career, where she cited her own experiences in attaining a bronze medal in Brazil - 12 years after her Paralympic Games debut in Athens, in a bid to encourage her audience. Sports is a long-term commitment, and there are no short-term glories. You have to be in it for the long run especially since you may meet failure early on in your career, Theresa, who has spina bifida, said. The swimmer also recalled how she dealt with the pain of missing out on a medal by less than a second at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. It was difficult to keep the experience of Beijing as a positive. But I needed to ignore the negative doubts and thoughts and tell myself that life went on no matter what, she said. She later engaged in a question and answer session with the student-athlete population on a variety of topics ranging from her pre-race preparations to her relationship with her coaches. Sharing the stage with her were International Baccalaureate student-athlete Celeste Goh Jia Rui and Discipline Master Mr Ng Kok Wei.

Swimmers Put Values Into Action Values In Action: Swimming Academy Ng Kok Wei Senior General Manager, Swimming Academy For several years, Singapore Sports School s Swimming Academy has made annual visits to Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore) to give back to society and the less fortunate. On 25 April 2017, the swimmers returned to the home in Yishun to visit the elderly residents. Accompanied by Academy staff, mentors, Boarding staff and parents, the Swimming Academy brought good cheer and warm friendship to their beneficiaries at Sree Narayana s Home for the Aged Sick. One different activity they had this year was to bring the elderly residents on an outing to a nearby hawker centre for dinner. Refusing to let the light drizzle dampen their spirits, the Sports School swimming community sheltered 18 wheelchair-bound residents to visit Chong Pang Food Centre for local delights and to soak in the atmosphere of the community setting. Overwhelming joy radiated from the residents' faces as our

student-athletes served them mouth-watering dishes and partook dinner together. Disparity in language gave way to communication bridged by smiles and gestures as chatter across generations added to the buzz of the setting. The Swimming Academy also contributed donations in kind to Sree Narayana. Sports School studentathletes learn to be Learned Champions With Character and Champions for Others through Academyinitiated and school-wide Values in Action activities. This year, Sports School will be organising a sports adventure day as part of Project Champions Way, a school-wide initiative, for disabled athletes on 20 May. Funds raised through Project Champions Way will go to Singapore Disability Sports Council and Special Olympics Singapore.

AWARDS Sports School Scores In DSLM 2017 Republic Polytechnic Graduation Ceremony Six years into the collaboration with Republic Polytechnic to offer the customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management at Singapore Sports School s very own campus sees yet another cohort of postsecondary student-athletes graduate from the programme. Golfer Leonard Tee Zhi Xian emerged top of the Class of 2017, earning himself the Viva Social Enterprise Gold Medal Award. He also received the Diploma with Merit awarded to the top 10 percent academic performers in the programme, along with the Diploma Plus Certificate in International Business. It absolutely feels amazing to graduate top of my cohort, with a Diploma Gold Medal and Merit awards, including another certificate in International Business. To be able to walk up on stage on my graduation and receive those awards was a very special moment for me, said Leonard. Turn back the clock to the time I was in Secondary 1, many would have doubted my capability of

achieving these feats academically. I was playful, immature and an extremely unfocused individual. From being placed in the top class after enrolling in Singapore Sports School, my academic grades took a hit and I tumbled into mediocrity. A short break after completing my secondary school education gave me time to reflect on the four years that had gone so swiftly. It occurred to me that I had wasted enough time in secondary school and it was time for me to make a change in my life. Right from the get-go, before I commenced the DSLM programme in 2014, I had a goal to be the top student in my cohort throughout Republic Polytechnic. Thus, I stuck to this goal of mine and chased it daily. I kept my eyes focused on the prize through the daily grind of training and attending lessons. Ultimately, it has everything to do with how badly you want something and working hard to achieve it. The customised diploma programme at Sports School helped me tremendously in achieving my sport and academic goals. The flexibility of the programme allowed me to take Leaves of Absence to participate in competitions, while classes were scheduled and arranged such that I could attend all of my golf trainings. Without this programme, I would never have dreamed of topping my entire cohort, as well as winning the title of Overall HSBC Youth Golf Challenge Champion in the 2014/2015 Season. In addition, we were assigned mentors that took care of our needs, offering authentic and personal advice in the areas of sport, academic and personal growth. I have learnt many valuable lessons during my seven years at Singapore Sports School which have helped shape me into the individual I am today. The astronomical level of care from all functions of the school sport, academic and boarding provides the support necessary to excel as a student-athlete and individual. Trusting the Sports School system has been definitely been rewarding for me. Three other former Sports School student-athletes Bryan Tan Yu Ru (Football), Ninna Tan Ai (Badminton) and Veronica Shanti Pereira (Track and Field) were amongst the six graduands who graduated from the DSLM programme with Merit. They received their awards from Mr Nicholas Gerard Conceicao, Executive Director, Outward Bound Singapore, at the Graduation Ceremony on 2 May Hurdler Kerstin Ong Jing Rong completed her polytechnic education with a Diploma Plus Certificate in International Business in addition to the DSLM. Sports School introduced the customised DSLM for elite youth athletes conducted at the Champions Way campus and saw our first cohort graduate in Since then, our student-athletes have topped their cohorts which includes students from RP s main campus. Top students in previous years include Isabelle Li Siyun (2014, Special Award Recipient)), Pan Shi Yu (2015) and Javier Tan Jun Juan (2016).
