2 P a g e 2 Camp Budokan Summer Judo Camp By Carol Lin This year, Camp Budokan was held from July 24th to July 30th at Camp Samac (north of Oshawa, Ontario). Overnight and day campers have been coming to Camp Budokan for over 50 years. Created in 1965 by Sensei Bill Doherty and directed by Sensei Karl Doherty from the Ajax Budokan Judo Club, this year s camp attracted a diverse group of Judoka. Your commitment to Camp Budokan 2016 contributed to its success. Special thanks to dedicated staff, volunteers and coaches this year. In addition to over 50 campers four specialized programs were offered this year. 1. Ontario High Performance Program 2. Junior Ontario Youth Academy 3. Judo Youth Austria 4. Rep Hockey Program With Judoka from Nova Scotia, Quebec, British Columbia, Nunavut, USA and Austria, Camp Budokan is still a one of a kind Summer Judo Camp. 3 P a g e 3 SUMMER COMPETITION 2016 US Open Judo Championships Gold For Ontario Name: Shujon Mazumder Weight Class: -55kg Belt: Yondan (4th) Degree Black Belt Ontario Club: Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Toronto Sensei: Ken Fukushima This past July, Shujon Mazumder won a Gold medal at the 2016 US Open Senior Judo Championships. He is a 7-Time Canadian National Champion and Pan American Medalist. The 28 th US Open Judo Championships were hosted in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This competition site allowed athletes and coaches easy access to many beaches to enjoy the warm weather. Shujon won his first match by Ippon. He then went on to win the finals with a wazari, throwing his American opponent with a foot sweep. This was a personal best result for Shujon Mazumder who has competed in the US open in the past. Prior to this, he competed at the 2003 US open in Las Vegas, where he won a bronze medal in the Senior -55 kg division.

6 P a g e 6 REFEREE S CORNER Post Olympics Comment by Gerald Okimura I hope everyone was able to watch and enjoy some of the Judo from the 2016 Olympics. It was exciting and although Canada did not medal, all the Canadian team did very well. Balance Of the matches I did get to watch, I thought the refereeing was fair and balanced and the evaluation of the throws was accurate. Compared to 2012 where the referees seemed reluctant to call penalties, in Rio calling non-combativity and gripping penalties were correctly assessed to get the competitors engaged. Were there refereeing issues? Yes, but these issues can happen at any level of competition. They were dealt with immediately and fairly. This event like any other is not without controversy. Coaches Conduct One thing I thought was outstanding was the management of coach s conduct. Coaches are only allowed to talk with their competitor during Matte and must be sit silently during Hajime. There were a number of times I saw coaches being warned or dismissed for not abiding by this rule. Rule Changes After the 2012 London Olympics, we saw a number of changes to the competitive rules. Over the next little while, I am certain there will be a number of rule changes again. Contrary to popular belief, these changes are not arbitrarily done by referees or the IJF, but are modified though consultations with the IJF, referees, coaches and competitors. Once these changes are official and adopted by Judo Canada, the Judo Ontario refereeing committee will provide seminars and information related to these modifications. Become a Referee If you have any questions or concerns or would like more information on how to become a referee, please feel free to approach any of the referees or JO referee committee members. I can also be reached directly at gokimura21@gmail.com and I would be more than pleased to address your questions or concerns.

8 P a g e 8 Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. Elizabeth Andrew, Australian politician I AWARDS NIGHT 2016 Judo Ontario Awards and Recognition Night by Val McIntyre On September 10, 2016 the judo community gathered together at L Arche Daybreak in Richmond Hill at the invitation of Judo Ontario. The evening was put together in order to adequately and effectively recognize the contribution of the volunteers and athletes (for 2015) at all levels who are so crucial to the development and advancement of judo in Ontario. The evening was a warm and friendly gathering with conversation, nice finger foods and some picture snapping. Aartje Sheffield, President of Judo Ontario captured the spirit of the evening best in her letter featured in the printed programme: The upcoming generation of athletes is inspired by this dedication, this hard work, and these exceptional accomplishments. Hall of Fame Inductees Jim Walker Charlie Formosa NOTE: For those of you who were as delighted by the lovely venue tucked in the trees as my husband and I were and as curious about it L Arche Daybreak ( is an international movement founded by Jean Vanier which celebrates the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities. The centre has many interesting programs and retreats in support of their values.
