8 Consider Becoming a Referee Referee s Corner by Gerald Okimura With the upcoming new tournament season, I am sure many of you have been practicing and training very hard to improve your judo skills with hopes of doing well at the various local, provincial and perhaps national shiai. Referees too need practice and training to improve and hone skills. As the level of fighters at shiai elevates, so too must the skill level of referees. Learning and understanding new rules, rule changes and applications, recognition of new techniques and review of well-established ones is an ongoing event. The majority, if not all of the referees were or are competitors who have numerous reasons for wanting to be a referee. Some reasons include: Wanting to stay active and involved in Judo and shiai; wanting to give back to the sport; and even being told to referee. What about you? It is never too late to start and learn how to be a referee. Currently, the Referee Committee is especially looking for U14, U16, U18 and U21 members to mentor and develop into high level referees. Becoming a referee is easy. Talk to any of the referees or Referee Committee members and let them know of your interest. Obtain and read a copy of the IJF Refereeing Rules (there are a lot of rules and interpretations) which can be found on the Judo Ontario website Attend a referee seminar or workshop. The seminars and workshops are typically run by Referee Committee members. They provide fundamental to advanced information on refereeing rules and interpretations, their application and refereeing best practices. Attend one or more of the many local dojo monthly shiais. These are usually attended by a Referee Committee Member. Tell them your experience. They will work with you and get you refereeing on the mat. The Committee Member can provide critiquing and guidance to improve your refereeing. At the end, the Member can evaluate your performance and promote you to a Provincial level referee. Although there is an official uniform that we wear, for these level tournaments, wear a white, short sleeve dress or golf style shirt, dark or grey pants and black socks. While starting out is easy, getting to a high international referee level can be a long and difficult track. You won t be able to do it alone but no worries since there is a lot of help from all the referees. And not just the referees in Ontario, but Canada, the USA and the world. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any of the referees, Referee Committee members or me directly. Hope to see you on the mat soon. Gerald N. Okimura Judo Ontario Referee Committee Member, gokimura21@hotmail.com 8
