1 Colorado Ninety-Nines October 2016 Newsletter of the Colorado Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots Upcoming Events See page two for details. Meetings OCT 8 Chapter meeting at Centennial Airport Author, Laurie Notaro NOV 5 Spreading Wings Gala Wings over the Rockies NOV 12 Chapter Meeting at Redstone College Rocky Mountain Metro (BJC) DEC 3 Holiday Party Western Air Flight Academy (BJC) In 1927, when the skies were the new frontier, three women-a beautiful heiress, a wealthy young widow and a 23-year-old beauty pageant winner-all decided to chase history and become the first woman to conquer the Atlantic. With breathtaking courage, they went after what everyone said they couldn't reach, defying danger, tragedy and death. Join author Laurie Notaro in a presentation of her book, Crossing the Horizon, that documents the true story of Elsie Mackay, Mabel Boll and Ruth Elder, a founding member of The Ninety-Nines, and their quest to prove that women were just as brave as men in the face of magnificent challenge. The story most people know about Amelia Earhart being the first woman to cross was only one scene in a remarkable chapter of history that has been forgotten. Join the Chapter at Aspen Flying Club for a presentation by author Laurie Notaro who will be discussing her new book, Crossing the Horizon. Tattered Cover flyer on page 3. 3 If you don t meet the eligibility requirements but would like to support The (and actively participate in Colorado Chapter events), we invite you to become an official Friend of The. This is a new way for you to support your favorite organization (and your favorite 99). Details can be found on The website below: Chapter Contacts A major catastrophe was narrowly averted on Saturday. Early morning the Poker Run dealers at the Limon Airport discovered that the bathroom was out of toilet paper. Given that many airplanes were expected, they called the emergency line which went to the dispatcher at Town Hall. He cheerfully dispatched the duty officer who was the Chief of Police with a six-pack of toilet paper. We are grateful to Limon for their support! 4 Jody McCarrell receives the 2016 achievement award for her continuing devotion and support of The. Shelby Schulz and DPE Craig Thighe South Central Section fall attendees. The Oklahoma Chapter were wonderful hostesses for the South Central Section meeting in Oklahoma City on September In attendance were Jan McKenzie, Sue Osborne, Linda Horn and Gretchen Jahn. On Friday Dr. Ken Carson treated us to a bus tour of the meteorology facilities at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where a group of students demonstrated the use of drones to gather detailed weather data. That evening we had a lovely reception at our International Headquarters, with special viewing of the Museum. Saturday s business meeting was followed by an informative session on ADS- B. The evening banquet featured Heather Dirksen, who spoke of the role The have played in her aviation journey. Jan McKenzie and Kris Irvin-Herron display the endowment fund check for The building in Oklahoma City. Thank you, Kelsey Hoogendoorn of the Shreveport Chapter, for the photographs. 5 By Terry Fiala The 2016 Poker Run was a great success! 12 airplanes and 25 people flew to four Denver metro airports on a beautiful, breezy Saturday to play for fun and prizes. The aircraft ranged from experimental Kitfox and Van's RV9, to Light Sport Gobosh, to Cessna 172s and 182s. Everyone enjoyed the fun of cross country flying, plus the camaraderie of finding friends at each stop. A grand total of $565 was raised with entry fees and additional donations - and every cent of it benefits the Colorado Future Woman Pilot Scholarship Fund, awarded each Spring to a woman who is working toward her primary pilot certificate. We want to thank everyone who made the 2016 Poker Run a success: The dozen or so volunteers who staffed each airport and helped us prepare for the event. The managers and FBOs of each airport stop for allowing us to use the space: Denver Jet Center at Centennial, American Aviation at Meadow Lake, Limon Municipal Airport, and Front Range Airport. The businesses who generously donated prizes: Emily and Debra Salley of Rocky Mountain Marking, Front Range Airport, Western Air Flight Academy, Spring Valley Golf Course, and many others. All the pilots who participated. Volunteers at Meadow Lake: Jan Lonsdale, Zoan Harclerode (Pikes Peak), Patsy Buchwald (Pikes Peak) and Megan Clegg (Pikes Peak) Volunteers at Front Range: Stephanie Wells, June Stewart, Karlen Krall, Nancy Reinhardt and Terri Bazacos Volunteers at Centennial: Margot Plummer and Linda Horn Volunteers at Limon: Gretchen Jahn and Lynn Merrill Volunteers who helped with marketing & prizes: Karlen Krall, June Stewart, Geremy Kornreich, Terry Fiala and Emily Salley We are already looking forward to Poker Run 2017! In the meantime, fly safe and fly often! Laura Withrow and Theresa Monroe Marty Brophy and Jan McKenzie Jason and Terry Fiala Familiar faces at Centennial! October 2016 Crosswind Chatter Page 5
