Education Research Recent Research on Human Learning Challenges Conventional Instructional Strategies, Doug Rohrer and Harold Pashler, Educational Researcher Improved Learning in a Large-Enrollment Physics Class, Louis Deslauriers, et al. Science 332 (2011) Transforming Physics Education, Carl Weiman and Katherine Perkins, Physics Today November 2005 Experiential vs. Lecture Based Retention of Material Involves multiple learning modalities Student familiarity with venue 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 4
What does Practicum Based Training Look Like? 90 Proportion of Idea Units Recalled Minutes 2 Days 1 Week Study-Study Study-Test From Roediger and Karpicke, Test-enhanced learning: Taking memory tests improves long-term retention, Psychological Science, /23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 5
Why Practicum Based Training? What is our Target Audience Prospective Officials Many have no prior experience May be new to the sport (teachers, parents, or friend of an official) 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 6
Why Practicum Based Training? What are our Training Goals Get people excited about Track and Field Don t overwhelm the trainees with too much information Expose the new officials to different areas of the sport 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 7
Why Practicum Based Training? Current Training Methods and Materials USATF Best Practices Resources 9 documents Some advocate 8 hours of training All are strictly classroom based Some pose multiple Referee-level questions to trainee officials!!!! 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 8
What does Practicum Based Training Look Like? Some lecture is still necessary Overview no more than minutes Explain benefits of certification (liability, training, insurance, etc.) Incorporate short answer questions aids in knowledge retention 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 9
What does Practicum Based Training Look Like? Some lecture is still necessary Overview officiating disciplines Cover areas we don t cover in practical sessions Para-athletics LDR Race Walk Explain they are trainees not Master officials 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 10
What does Practicum Based Training Look Like? Sample slides from Colorado presentation Brief overview will be covered in practicals Notice the short answer each block has one Emphasize SAFETY as often as possible 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 11
Officiating Field Events 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 12
Field Events Overview Think Safety First! Check the circle, board, runway, pit, cage, implements, spectators Limit access to the venue, including likely landing areas beyond sector lines 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 13
Field Event Athletes in Multiple Events In all field events under all rule books, athletes competing in other events may take attempts out of order in preliminary rounds In NCAA, athletes must be present when they are called up in the finals. In USATF and IAAF athletes can go out of order one round at a time. If an athlete does not begin an attempt within the time limit, it is recorded as a pass. 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 14
Field Event Potential Problems Athletes competing out of order Athletes checking in, then disappearing People crossing the runway, landing area Safe use and storage of equipment Proper positioning of officiating crew Conflicts with other events 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 15

Officiating Throwing Events 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 20
General Tips Allow practice throws within sectors only Control access to implements (impound) Check implements for damage (and for Weights & Measure mark of the day ) Never turn your back on the throwing site Walk all implements back, no tossing No athletes in the sector Officials don t step in ring 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 21
Implement Inspection All throwing implements should be weighed, measured, and marked prior to the competition 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 22
Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, Weight Stay outside of circle Correct Measurement Sector Line Throw Direction Center Point Reading Outer ring is the splash mark Inner ring is the actual measured mark 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 23

Field Events Summary Think and practice safety -- in warm-ups and competition Consistent communication to athletes, rhythm of event/calls Fairness consistent application of rules 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 26
Field Event Questions? What is the #1 goal of officials? of,, and What should an official never do in the sector during a throws event? In a horizontal jump the measurement should be made to the take off board and to the runway. 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 27
What s Wrong Here? 12/23/2014 USATFCOLORADO 28
What does Practicum Based Training Look Like? Practical sessions are structured from the athlete point of view Who is the first point of contact for the athlete?
