1 Little Athletics Victoria E-News Phone: (03) Toll Free: Fax: (03) Website: Issue 9 November 2013 On the Lookout for Little Aths History Little Athletics Victoria is celebrating its 50 Years anniversary this season with many festivities planned for the year ahead. As part of the celebrations, LAVic will be holding a black tie dinner on Saturday 4 October 2014, where it is anticipated over 800 people from the Little Athletics community will be in attendance to take a trip down memory lane. Volunteers from around Victoria will be invited to attend this event and discuss the fantastic development of our sport, which has seen over 1 million athletes take part on a weekly basis for 50 seasons. Little Athletics Victoria are currently finalizing details for a 50 Years of Little Athletics booklet which will be launched at the anniversary dinner. The office is actively seeking information from personnel who were involved in Little Athletics within local communities, especially those Centres that have now folded. So if anyone has information they would like to share, including registration numbers, uniforms, venues, newspapers clippings and promotional material please contact LAVic for more information. 2 State Multi-Event Championships 2014 State Multi-Event Championships 2014 will be held on 1 and 2 February 2014 at LaTrobe University, Bendigo Athletics Complex (Retreat Road, Floral Hill). Cost: $15 per entrant Early Bird entries close: 20th December 2013 (12 noon) Entries close: 14th January 2014 (12 noon) Event Schedule: Saturday 1st February Under 9-11 Boys & Girls Sunday 2nd February Under 12 - Under 14 Boys & Girls Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd February Under Boys & Girls Please note: due to the quantity of events that the U15 and U16 athletes compete in their events will be held over 2 days. A timetable will be available in due course Calling Little Aths Singers! Little Athletics Victoria are on the lookout for a current Little Athlete to sing the National Anthem for the State Relays opening ceremony (8:30am) at Lakeside Stadium on December 14, This opportunity is only available to accomplished singers with experience performing in public. The athlete must be registered for the 2013/2014 season, but does not need to be competing at the State Relays in order to sing the national anthem. 3 State Track & Field Championships 2014 State Track & Field Championships 2014 will be held on Saturday 29 th & Sunday 30th March 2014 at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, Melbourne. There are nineteen (19) different events which are conducted at these Championships. Athletes can choose what events they would like to compete in - subject to those available for the relevant age group. Athletes can compete in a maximum of four (4) events. If you're interested in entering Region Track & Field events please visit your Region website for more information here Region Qualifying Competitions shall be conducted by each Region at the following Region venues on Saturday 22 nd and Sunday 23 rd February 2014:

4 Attention Region Challenge Athletes! Little Athletics shorts have arrived! All athletes who participated in the Region Challenge will receive their shorts at Region Relays over the weekend of the 30 th November - 1 st December. If you are not competing in Region Relays, please contact your Region Team Manager to arrange collection of your shorts. We understand that athletes did not have a chance to try on the shorts, so we are giving athletes the opportunity to change their size at the State Relay Championships (14 th December). March Past State Relays All Region Challenge athletes are invited to participate in the official March Past during the lunch break (approximately 12:30pm) during the State Relay Championships. If you purchased your Region Challenge singlet, you are encouraged to bring this along on the day. Introducing Little Aths new app! And it s free! Little Athletics Victoria have recently joined with Team App in order to provide a new, fast and direct way to keep in touch with our members. Team App is a platform that allows any sporting organization to create its own smartphone app that s great looking, easy-to-use and packed with awesome features. A lot of our Centres have already jumped on board to create their own apps too. The Little Athletics Victoria app is up and running now, and we are encouraging all our members to download the app and sign up. As an extra incentive we are running a draw to giveaway a Little Aths backpack filled with goodies to one of our new Team App members. Install the Little Athletics Victoria App on your smartphone now! Whilst Team App is optimised for smartphones it also works great on ipad. If searching on an ipad switch to iphone Apps. 7 Little Aths at Zatopek:10 The 53 rd edition of the Zatopek:10 is set to kick-off on December at Lakeside Stadium. Doubling as the Australian Championship and Victorian Championship for the 10,000m events and the Commonwealth Games Selection Trial, this year s event promises a night of fast and thrilling racing. Little Athletics Victoria are hosting a number of events on the night, including the ever-popular Victoria s Fastest Kid. This invite-only race will see the reigning 100m State Champions from each age group, U/9 U/15, compete against each other for the coveted title in a 70m handicap race. Also on the event schedule for Zatopek:10 are a Multi Age Club Relay and an invite-only U/ m. The Multi Age Club Relay will feature Little Aths Centres and Athletics Victoria Clubs competing together in a 100x100x200x200x200x400m format race. The boys and girls U/ m races, which will include the State s best runners and even a few out-of-state and international competitors, are both shaping up to be exciting and close. The girl s race is very much a showcase of Australia s best junior talent with the 1 st, 3 rd, 4 th, 7 th, 8 th and 9 th place-getters from the National Junior Championships in March (Perth) all competing! 9 New Spike Rules LAVic have recently been informed by Lakeside Stadium that the Venue Rule for the length of spikes for events (exclusive of Javelin and High Jump) is now 6mm. This will mean that majority of our Little Athletes probably have 7mm currently in their shoes and will need to alter them should they be competing at the upcoming State Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium or future events at this venue. Additionally only Conical or Pyramid spikes are allowed. This is already an LAVic rule. Understanding that 6mm spikes are not always readily available for purchase, LAVic will be offering Centres the opportunity to purchase spikes for their athletes. In addition sets of spikes will be available to purchase from the Merchandise Room at our State Championship events. The 6mm spikes rule will be strictly monitored in the Call Room in conjunction with uniform checks currently in place. Athletes presenting with 7mm spikes will need to change them prior to competing.
