It is an exciting and dynamic sport that provides us with the ideal opportunity to demonstrate the qualities of our products, whether we are competing in off road racing with the Toyota Hilux or in special stage rallying with the Toyota Yaris. Toyota has 35 dealers in the Western Cape. This is the largest dealer network in the province and it ensures that you are never far away from Toyota, says Anton Falck, Senior Regional Manager of the Western Cape region for Toyota. Toyota s wide Western Cape presence mirrors that of all the other provinces and neighbouring countries, in which Toyota has the largest and most representative dealer network. This follows a practice started in 1961 the year in which Toyota was established in South Africa to create a network of dealers near customers. This was a novel approach as all other manufacturers focussed on the major cities and towns and vehicle owners often had to travel far for assistance. Today Toyota maintains a wide network of dealers, which it services with parts and components from its National Parts Distribution Centre (NPDC) in Gauteng. The centre, which will be the largest of its kind on the continent once both phases are complete, delivers service and repair parts to every dealer every day. People place their trust in Toyota. This is in no small part thanks to the network of dealers who provide quality service and support to our customers. We would like to thank them for their continued partnership and support for motor sport, says Falck. 1

We are very pleased that this event is a joint organisational effort by the Cape rally clubs in conjunction with the NRC. We always enjoy our annual visit to the beautiful Western Cape and we look forward to another excellent round of the championship. Once again we welcome and are very grateful for the generous support of Toyota and the Toyota dealers. Toyota is a long time partner of rallying and, together with our other partners, are making an important contribution to the development of the sport in South Africa. In addition to running three Toyota Yaris S2000 cars in the premier class of the championship, they also sponsor two rounds of the eight-round championship and provide valuable support to many Toyota privateers. 5 NEW TOYOTA YARIS SEEKS MAIDEN WIN ON TOYOTA CAPE DEALER RALLY The South African Rally Championship moves to the Western Cape for the first time this year for the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally, the second of the two rounds of the eight-event championship sponsored by Toyota South Africa Motors. It will also mark the sixth national championship outing of the all-new Toyota Yaris S2000, Toyota Motorsport South Africa s latest weapon in the quest for an 11th national rally championship. The two-door four-wheel drive Yaris, built and developed by Glyn Hall and his team at Toyota Motorsport s Barbecue Downs workshop within earshot of the Kyalami grand prix circuit, has made an immediate impact on the rally special stages, improving with every outing as the team works hard on its development. Four consecutive podiums in five events and a best result to date of second in the Toyota Gauteng Dealer Rally in round three with Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris) have been encouraging, but Hall wants more. Johnny and Carolyn are third in the championship, but 36 points behind current leaders Cronje and Houghton in the car in which they won the 2012 championship. However they re only 11 points behind Jan Habig and Robert Paisley. We have to push for our first win and to achieve this on an event sponsored by Toyota would be more than appropriate, said Hall. All three of Toyota Motorsport s entries are strong contenders and each has been on the podium in the new car. Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee, fifth in the championship in the second Castrol Team Toyota Auris and second in round two, missed out on what would have been a well-deserved second place in the recent Ford Dealer Rally after being penalised a minute for an unintentional jump start. Dakar Rally winner Giniel de Villiers and Greg Godrich are fourth in the championship in the Imperial Toyota Yaris after a consistent first season together in the top class that has seen them finish in the top six on three occasions with a best result of third in round four. Despite a lot of testing and making improvements we re not seeing the results we expected, said team principal Hall. For the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally we ve changed the set-up quite a lot suspension and transmission in particular. The cars will be easier to drive, rather than faster, and more predictable. Results of testing have been encouraging. We have three good cars. The two-day 780-kilometre Toyota Cape Dealer Rally will start from Imperial Toyota CapeGate in Brackenfell at on Leeroy Poulter/Elvene Coetzee Friday September 13 and finish back at Imperial Toyota around on Saturday. There will be five special stages on each day covering a total of some 175-kilometres of timed flat-out racing. Rally headquarters and the event s single service park, which will be used twice on Friday and three times on Saturday, will be at Brackenfell High School. 7 DEFENDING CHAMPIONS SETTING THE PACE IN CHASE FOR SA RALLY TITLE Mark Cronje / Robin Houghton With a 25-point lead in hand equivalent to a rally victory defending champions Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton seem headed for a second straight title in their Ford Dealer Fiesta S2000 as the championship heads for the Western Cape for the third last round of the championship, the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally this weekend. Time is running out for the Toyota and Volkswagen factory teams to capture what for the past few years has been for them the elusive South African National Rally Championship. Volkswagen last won in 2010 with Enzo Kuun and Guy Hodgson the end of a six-year winning streak for the Uitenhage-based team - while Toyota s run of 12 driver s championships came to an end with Serge Damseaux s victory in Cronje and Houghton s winning run last season followed Ford s first national championship in 29 years with Zimbabwean Conrad Rautenbach taking the title in 2011 in a Fiesta S2000. Ford s previous title was won by the legendary Sarel van der Merwe way back in Not only do the Toyotas and Volkswagens have to catch Cronje and Houghton, who have won four of the five events so far, they also have to catch second-placed privateers and former champions Jan Habig and Robert Paisley in a Basil Read Ford Fiesta S2000, the only other crew to have won this year. The veteran Habig has been enjoying a resurgence of Henk Lategan / Barry White Jan Habig / Robert Paisley 5

8 Jean-Pierre Damseaux / Hilton Auffray form since leaving the factory VW team for whom he won five titles between 1999 and The leading factory Toyota is the Castrol Yaris S2000 of perennial runner-up Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan, who are 11 points behind Habig/Paisley and 36 behind Cronje/Houghton. Gemmell, a former FIA African rally champion and national production car rally champion, has finished second in the championship four times and would like nothing better than to rectify this. He and Swan have a second and a third to their credit to date and will be aiming for the top step on the podium this weekend and a rare win by a manufacturer in its own rally. The locally built and developed four-wheel drive Yaris S2000 rally car is showing pace and promise in its first season and Gemmell s Toyota Motorsport team-mates Giniel de Villiers and Greg Godrich (Imperial Toyota Yaris) and Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee (Castrol Yaris) currently fourth and fifth respectively in the championship are also contenders for a maiden Yaris win should Cronje and Houghton run into any problems. Both have finished on the podium already with Poulter second to Cronje in round two. The leading factory Volkswagen is the Sasolracing Polo S2000 of 19- year-old Henk Lategan and Barry White in joint fifth place with Poulter/Coetzee. Lategan has impressed in his first season in the top class and boasts a second place in the recent Ford Dealer Rally. Looking to regain their former glory but enduring a disappointing season so far are VW s former champions Enzo Kuun/Douglas Judd and Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries in the other two Sasolracing Polos. These two experienced crews boast 11 championships between them, but their results to date, Gugu Zulu / Carl Peskin which see them in 10th and 11th places respectively in the championship, do not reflect their true ability. Both drivers have shown flashes of their true pace, with Kuun finishing third in round three, and it s just a matter of time before they come good. Seventh overall and leading the S2000 Challenge class for older specification four-wheel drive cars with 30 points are Team Total s Jean- Pierre Damseaux and Hilton Auffray in a Toyota Auris after two class wins in the first five rounds. Nine points behind in the driver s category is defending Challenge title holder Gugu Zulu (VW Sasolracing Polo) who has a class win and two seconds but also two non-finishes to his name. His codriver, Carl Peskin, is fourth in his category as a result of missing a round to attend the birth of his first child. Mohammed Moosa is third in the driver s category and codriver Andre Vermeulen is second in his category in the second Team Total Auris. They also have a class win to their credit and any one of these top three crews, who are covered by just 9,5 points, is capable of winning. Japie van Niekerk and Gerhard Snyman are enjoying a revitalised season after Van Niekerk acquired an older spec Ford Fiesta and the pair won the Challenge class in the recent Ford Dealer Rally. 9 TIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE TWO-WHEEL DRIVE S1600 CLASS Matthew Vacy-Lyle / Schalk van Heerden With just 9,5 points separating the top five and three different winners in the past five rounds, the S1600 class for two-wheel drive cars is the most hotly contested in the South African Rally Championship. The lead in the championship has been changing from round to round and with just three of the eight rounds remaining time is running out for the champions-in-waiting to make their move. Heading the points table as the young contenders (and one veteran with numerous titles already under his belt) prepare for the Toyota Cape Dealer are Matthew Vacy-Lyle and Schalk van Heerden (Fragram Tools Toyota RunX). Surprisingly they have yet to win a round, but their consistency they have finished in the top five in each event to date has paid off. Second and a slim two points in arrears is the wily and vastly experienced Craig Trott and his co-driver Janine Lourens (Team Total Toyota RunX), who have scored in every round including two podiums and are also seeking their first win of the season. Trailing them by 1,5 points are former championship leaders Clint Weston and Christoff Snyders (Reef Tankers Citroen C2 R2), the latter a champion driver turned co-driver, who have two class wins so far but also two low scoring rounds where they finished under Super Rally rules after experiencing problems on the opening day. They led the recent Ford Dealer Rally on the final day for the first six special stages before rolling out of contention on the last stage. Joint fourth and a further six points off the lead are Namibian Thilo Himmel and Armand du Toit in the debut season of the all-south African Toyota Etios R2 and circuit racer turned rally driver Chad van Beurden (Van Beurden Construction VW Polo R2). Himmel and Du Toit have been the most consistent stage winners and led the championship after the first three rounds thanks to two class wins and a second place. Van Beurden and stand-in co-driver Nico Swartz were second in the recent Ford Dealer Rally in Gauteng, Van Beurden s best result in his first season in rallying. Sixth after an incident-filled season that has included a win in the most recent round and three low-scoring Super Rally finishes is Ashley Haigh-Smith (Castrol Ford Fiesta R2), whose British co-driver Chris Parry is fifth in his category thanks to Van Beurden s regular co-driver Henry Dearlove Jnr missing the Ford Dealer Rally. With a deficit of 21 points to the current class leaders equivalent to a second place finish Haigh-Smith and Parry are by no means out of championship contention, which makes the S1600 class so fascinating to follow. It is a fastgrowing class that is attracting new competitors from other motorsport disciplines and with 15 entries in the Ford Dealer Rally it is proving to be a popular nursery for the more senior classes and a fertile proving ground for champions of the future. Allow yourself enough travelling time to get to the spectator points as listed in this Spectator Guide. (Rally drivers make creative use of the whole road.) DO NOT CROSS INTO DEMARCATED PROHIBITED AREAS. Keep your CHILDREN UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION at all times. DO NOT TAKE PETS OR ANIMALS into special stages. WHEN SPECTATING AT NIGHT, it is advisable to carry a torch. BE WARY AND ALERT AT ALL TIMES, particularly during the daylight stages. PLEASE DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. DO NOT ASSUME THAT A RALLY DRIVERS WILL SEE YOU if you wander onto the stage. DO NOT STAND OR PARK IN FRONT OF ARROWS. DO NOT WALK ONTO THE STAGES.
