5 IN THE WIND PRO FLAT TRACK VENUE CHANGE Officials from AMA Pro Racing and Central New York Raceway Park (CNYRP) announced that the AMA Pro Flat Track event scheduled for Saturday, August 20 has been moved to Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in Elbridge, NY. The decision was made by CNYRP and AMA Pro Racing representatives as unforeseen construction delays might leave the CNYRP facility not ready to host the event. Our original plan had been to hold the event at our brandnew facility. However, since the beginning, we have been working on the contingency plan of hosting the event at Rolling Wheels Raceway, said CNYRP President Glenn Donnelly. We are excited to still be able to bring AMA Pro Flat Track back to Central New York and give the fans a great show at another top facility. CNYRP and AMA Pro Racing representatives toured Rolling Wheels Raceway in early June and deemed the facility as a suitable backup location for the AMA Pro Flat Track event. The venue offers the same synthetic surface and track size as the current dirt oval that is under construction at CNYRP, and an AMA Pro GNC2 rider from the region completed a successful test at Rolling Wheels Raceway in CNYRP says it is looks forward to bringing AMA Pro Flat Track to the state-of-the-art facility when construction is complete in Details on ticket P40 information and event schedule for the August 20 AMA Pro Flat Track event will be released shortly. NELSON If you were a passing visitor to Laguna Seca, you could be forgiven for thinking the MotoAmerica FIM North American Road Racing Championship was the main attraction across the World Superbike weekend; such was the quality and intensity of the racing in the Superbike and Superstock 1000 classes. Josh Hayes and Cameron Beaubier made it a red-letter day for the boys in blue with a Superbike win apiece, Claudio Corti and Josh Herrin shared the spoils in a controversial Superstock 1000 weekend, JD Beach clawed back ground on his teammate Garrett Gerloff in the Supersport category while Ashton Yates pulled a surprise victory in a typically hectic KTM RC Cup event. Josh Hayes proved there s plenty of fight in the old guy yet with a brilliant win in race two at Laguna Seca, his 60th AMA Superbike race win.

8 ROUND 8 / JULY 10, 2016 LAGUNA SECA / MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA ROAD RACE P76 MOTOAMERICA AMA/FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CH SUPERBIKE/SUPERSTOCK 1000 In what has proved to be the pattern of the season, the two Laguna Seca Superbike races were distilled to a battle of blue bikes as the factory Yamahas and Suzukis went head to head at this most famous of venues, the Yamaha men coming out on top on both occasions. It was hard not to feel sorry for Josh Hayes in race one after the veteran four-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion did the majority of the donkey work out front, only to lose out to a smart-riding Cameron Beaubier with two laps to go. Current number-one Beaubier bided his time as Yoshimura Suzuki s Toni Elias and Hayes went at each other with everything but the kitchen sink. The Spaniard was dive-bombing Hayes time and again into the ultra-tight turn two with Hayes eventually christening him the Spanish Scud Missile. Beaubier kept his powder dry and when another dive-bomb went wrong for Elias and caused the Spaniard to run wide, Beaubier was up to second with three laps to go, and in the lead a lap later. Hayes eventually finished third after Elias ran him high in turn two with one lap remaining to steal the second spot on the podium. I feel okay because I push to the maximum, as always, and, like playing cards, I go all in, said Elias. I lose this time, but I can be happy with how I ride. Today was very tough. Roger Hayden was in the mix for half of the race until he lost the front end of his factory GSX-R at the entry to turn two, crashing out of the race. It was much the same in race two, with Elias, Beaubier and Hayes once again clearing off from the field. Hayden kept it on two wheels this time but simply didn t have the pace of the leading trio, Elias again, divebombing past the factory Yamahas on multiple occasions into turn two, and running wide nearly every time. The Superstock 1000 action was intense and Claudio Corti (71) made more than just a statement by winning race two.

10 ROUND 8 / JULY 10, 2016 LAGUNA SECA / MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA ROAD RACE P78 MOTOAMERICA AMA/FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CH For Hayes, the race was turning out like race one as he continued to lead the pack with Beaubier and Elias snapping at his heels. Elias ran himself out of contention with another outbraking move gone bad at the start of the final lap, leaving Beaubier to chase down Hayes out front. He made his move on his veteran teammate at the final corner and looked to have made the pass stick but he got on the gas too soon, too hard, lighting the back of the Yamaha up and losing the crucial drive to the flag. It s awesome to pull a win like this at Laguna, Hayes said. What a race, man! I was holding on tight and had my eyes shut half the time, waiting to see what the Spanish Scud Missile here [Elias] was going to do it was a nerve-racking race. For Beaubier, second place increased his lead in the series standings to 29 points and also netted his mom a brand-new Honda Civic for winning the three-round Honda Superbike Showdown, run concurrently in the MotoAmerica Superbike series. There s 50 points up for grabs in New Jersey so the title isn t over yet, Beaubier said. Racing here was awesome, though, I had a lot of family and friends here, this is my home round so it was great to get a win and a second to increase the points lead. Beaubier leads the standings with 298 to Hayes 269, with Elias six points back at 263. It was just as intense in the Superstock 1000 category, running from fourth to 10th on the track in race one. Tempers flared as Claudio Corti (HSBK Aprilia), Josh Herrin (Meen/Wheels In Motion Yamaha), Danny Eslick (TOBC Yamaha), Mathew Scholtz (Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha), Bobby Fong (Latus Motors Racing Kawasaki) and Sheridan Morias (Team Rabid Transit Yamaha) swapped paint at an incredible rate, with Eslick seemingly winning the battle but later being docked two places, along with a furious Corti, for passing under a yellow flag. The win thus belonged to Herrin, who opened Australian Brayden Elliott made another return to the AMA paddock for ADR Fly Racing but suffered all weekend with suspension issues.

At the end of race two, it was Corti who took the victory in what was a performance full of rage after what he saw as the injustice of race one, besting Mathew Scholtz and Sheridan Morias. But it was Herrin who emerged the real victor as he claimed the Superstock 1000 title by finishing eighth on the road and fourth in class. Or so he thought. Corti s team immediately protested the title-winning Meen Motorsport machine, and Corti didn t hold back when chatting to Cycle News. Our bike (Aprilia) is a real Superstock, and I think there is something wrong with the Yamaha, said the Italian. We tested in Italy with this bike and we beat the Yamaha so easy, and I think the level of the Italian rider is higher than this one [American], so there must be something wrong with this bike [Yamaha]. 14 ROUND 7 / JULY 9, 2016 SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS / THE WICK 338 MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP P88 BY STEVE COX PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB KOY TOMAC PULLS THROUGH Eli Tomac becomes the first racer in the nationals to beat Roczen and he does it twice in one day. Leading up to the return of the Southwick Motocross National at The Wick 338 (formerly called MX338) in Southwick, Massachusetts, RCH Suzuki s Ken Roczen has been almost as dominant as any racer has ever been in a motocross championship, having won 11 of the last 12 motos. But that dominance has been under fire lately with the resurgence of Monster Energy Kawasaki s Eli Tomac. Over the past few weeks, Tomac has been picking up the pace, finishing second to Roczen five motos in a row and getting closer and closer to victory. Finally, Tomac put it all together and claimed his first win of the year at Southwick s sandy MX338 circuit. Even Roczen couldn t do anything but watch Tomac go 1-1. One thing you do is never give up, Tomac said. I mean, we re just over halfway now. There s quite a few races left, so it s never over till it s over. We re going to keep fighting. In the 250MX class, Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha s Cooper Webb scored his third overall victory in a row, winning four of the last six motos. One of those losses came in the first moto at Southwick, though he was pressuring his teammate Jeremy Martin at the end. In the second moto, Webb was done eating sand and nailed the holeshot and never looked back, taking the win 20 seconds ahead of rookie Austin Forkner, who finished out the day on the podium in second place for the first time of his career.

16 ROUND 7 / JULY 9, 2016 SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS / THE WICK 338 MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP P90 450MX Roczen could have literally stayed home for the Southwick round and still left Massachusetts with the championship points lead. With 53 points in-hand at the halfway point of the series, the championship is completely Roczen s to lose. But that doesn t mean Tomac and the rest of the 450cc field are going to roll over for the points leader. In 450MX moto one, GEICO Honda s Justin Bogle snatched his third holeshot in a row while Roczen and Tomac fought their way forward from the tail end of the top 10. Autotrader.com/ Monster Energy/JGR Yamaha s Justin Barcia was down in the first turn with a grip of other racers, including Josh Grant s replacement teammate Tyler Bowers (Monster Energy Kawasaki), Yoshimura Suzuki s Blake Baggett and more. As has become a habit for Roczen, he went to work immediately and began making aggressive moves toward the front of the pack and rounded the first lap in fourth, two spots in front of Tomac. Bogle led early in front of Red Bull KTM s lone ranger Marvin Musquin, Rockstar Justin Bogle (19) has been tearing up the starts lately. He went on to finish a careerhigh fourth in the first 450MX moto. (He crashed out of the second moto.)

17 VOL. 53 ISSUE 27 JULY 12, 2016 P91 Energy Husqvarna s Christophe Pourcel, Roczen, Barcia s teammate Weston Peick and Tomac. After moving by Musquin for second, it took Roczen almost five laps to reel Bogle back in, but once he did, he went by quickly. And he had to, because by then Tomac was right on his heels. For the next two laps, Tomac hounded Roczen, then struck at the halfway point of the moto, pushing Roczen back to second place. Roczen immediately began losing ground and looked out of sorts on his factory-backed Suzuki, later explaining that his forks were causing him some sort of issue. Well, we always want to go out there and win, that s for sure, Roczen said. Everything went all right in the beginning, but I m like one of the only ones that s out there on air forks and they just get worse and worse towards the end. And this is like the only track where we have sandy conditions with a really hard base. So it s really tough in the end. The bike wasn t really clicking and it cost me. But we re going to go back and see what we can do. Tomac went on to win by

18 ROUND 7 / JULY 9, 2016 SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS / THE WICK 338 MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP P92 nearly 25 seconds over Roczen, followed by Musquin, Bogle, Pourcel, Barcia who passed his teammate, Peick, for the position with four laps to go after getting up from his first-turn crash and BTOSports.com KTM s rookie Benny Bloss. Quick on the trigger, Bogle landed his fourth holeshot in as many motos at the start of 450MX moto two, but Pourcel took him out a few turns later, cutting across Bogle s front wheel. Bogle remounted nearly last and eventually dropped out Eli Tomac (3) and Ken Roczen (94) had a great battle in the second moto. of the race at about two-thirds race distance. After taking over the lead, Pourcel almost immediately lost the lead to Roczen and began looking back to see who else was coming. He got an answer a few turns later when Tomac followed Roczen s lead by the fast Frenchman. Tomac gave chase to Roczen and finally made the pass six laps into the 16-lap moto when he used an outside/inside move to go by Roczen and take the lead. Roczen began to drop back a little bit before Tomac nearly went down when his foot got ripped off the peg as he headed to the finish line that same lap. A lap later, Tomac lost the front end and went down, handing the lead back to Roczen. Not to be denied, though, Tomac went back and passed Roczen yet again that very same lap to re-take the lead. He caught and passed Roczen twice in the same moto. Roczen stayed close to Tomac throughout the rest of the race, but Tomac took the moto win.

19 VOL. 53 ISSUE 27 JULY 12, 2016 P93 That was like a battle of a lifetime right there for us, Tomac said. Me and Kenny were going at it. Ended up getting by him the first time, and then had to go inside in the left-hander up there and it washed my front end out. Had to hop back on and Kenny got by me again. I then did a little bit of a dive-bomb pass at the end there. After that it was just tooth-and-nail all the way through. But man, this is a huge relief for us. It s the first win this season, our first moto win of the season. That was a good race. After Tomac and Roczen crossed the finish line, a minute and nine seconds went by before third place took the checkers. That was Barcia in third; en route, he took Musquin out for the position earlier in the race. Then came Peick, Pourcel, Bloss and Musquin. In the overall, Tomac grabbed his first MX National win in over a year, followed by Roczen, Barcia, Musquin, Peick, Pourcel and Bloss. The win, however, doesn t make a huge difference in the points race, but Tomac cut into it by six points. With a points lead of 47 points with 10 motos left to run, even if Tomac wins every single moto from here forward, Roczen still wins the title by 17 points (if he finishes second every time. If Tomac is going to have a chance, he s going to need some help. All you can say is I was just feeling it, Tomac said. I just love the sand. I m just having fun and my track at home is really soft like this, so it s a comfort thing for me... 20 ROUND 7 / JULY 9, 2016 SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS / THE WICK 338 MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP P98 My Own Race: 3 ELI TOMAC 1 ST 450MX (1-1) For Eli Tomac and the Monster Energy Kawasaki Team, it was a great relief to get the win, the first for both in Pro Motocross and the second major victory all year (they also one the Daytona Supercross in March). It feels great to win again, said Eli Tomac. We ve been working so hard as a team to improve every weekend and to see it pay off feels good. The track conditions were really rough today, so it really came down to maintaining momentum and riding as smooth as possible through the bumps. Overall I am pumped to be back on top. This is only the beginning. 94 KEN ROCZEN 2 ND 450MX (2-2) I struggled today pretty bad with [my settings], Ken Roczen said of his day. It works pretty good on other tracks, but it s so sandy here, and the base is so hard and I just struggled in the first moto. We went back and made some changes and it was better but not ideal. I felt uncomfortable all day out there. I was trying to minimize the mistakes and do the best I can. We had a good battle going on, we were kind of yo-yo-ing it there for a while; he [Tomac] had certain spots that he was faster and I was closing in on other spots. We weren t ever really close enough to where I could ve maybe have gone up the inside. It was tough out there; you can t really compare this track to European tracks, here there are very tight turns and a hard base, and I though it was pretty high speed. 25 MARVIN MUSQUIN 4 TH 450MX (3-7) Red Bull KTM s Marvin Musquin just missed out getting on the 450MX podium for the first time this season. The first moto I felt happy with my ride, I got a good start and felt like I had a really good flow, Musquin said. The second moto was a little more tough, I got caught up behind Justin Barcia and then I crashed and after that it was really hard to get back into a flow. He still managed to claw and scratch his way up to seventh after falling back outside the top 10 in that second-moto crash. 377 CHRISTOPHE POURCEL 6 TH 450MX (5-5) Rockstar Energy Husqvarna s Christophe Pourcel had a strong day in the Southwick sand. The Frenchman took advantage of two good starts, including a near holeshot in the second moto. He took the lead from Justin Bogle (clipping his front wheel in the process, causing Bogle to go down) but was quickly swallowed up by Roczen and Tomac. He d go on to finish both motos in fifth. Today was decent, said Pourcel. I finally got two top-five finishes which has been the goal for a long time. I got great starts and felt really good on the bike. I m just going to keep pushing and hopefully I ll get on the box soon. 16 ZACH OSBORNE 7 TH 250MX (8-7) Zach Osborne, on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna, struggled a little bit with his starts, and a small washout in the second moto didn t help his day any. Today was kind of a disappointment, said Osborne. I had a little issue in the first practice and messed up my gate pick for the first moto. I still got a decent start, but I didn t ride that great. I got off to a better start in the second moto but had a run-in with another rider about halfway through the moto. That dropped me down pretty far, but I still came back to seventh. It was a tough day.

21 ROUND 7 / JULY 9, 2016 SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS / THE WICK 338 MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP P100 My Own Race: 49 MARTIN DAVALOS 10 TH 250MX (16-6) Despite a 16th in the first 250MX moto, Martin Davalos looked good in the Southwick sand. Southwick was pretty good for me, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Team rider said. I didn t grow up riding in the sand so it was definitely challenging. I think living in Florida has opened my mind a bit to how to ride in the sand. The track was really gnarly, especially in the second moto. It s a weird kind of sand, and if you try and hug the insides you don t get any traction. I ran into someone in the first moto and bent up my bike. I was able to come back to 15th. I almost got the holeshot in the second moto and was able to finish sixth. I m definitely moving in the right direction. The goal is to put in two solid motos. I just need to minimize the mistakes. 20 BROC TICKLE 8 TH 450MX (10-8) I had an okay day but not like the last two weekends, said Soaring Eagle/Jimmy John s/rch Suzuki s Broc Tickle. My starts today were terrible, so that kind of set the tone for the motos. The second moto I felt awesome once I got a flow going. I was by myself and it was kind of hard to pass out there; I felt like the track funneled into one berm. There were some positives and I m not bummed out by the weekend at all. It was still solid. I just need to get starts next week. 214 AUSTIN FORKNER 3RD 250MX (5-2) Rookie Austin Forkner was flying at Southwick. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki Team rider set the top qualifying time in the 250MX class and went on to finish out the day on the podium for the first time of his young pro career. Today was really good, Forkner said. After setting the fastest lap in qualifying, I got two decent starts in both motos and charged as hard as I could. I was absolutely sending it in moto two and it felt great to battle for the lead with the points leader. I feel great with how I performed today and am looking forward in continuing to learn and grow. 58 JAMES DECOTIS 19TH 250MX (25-15) Local favorite was back in action at Southwick aboard a GEICO Honda. It was his first race in many months. I came out pretty good in that first one but they kind of picked me off in the beginning, said Decotis. I don t know. I wasn t that comfortable. It s really hard to jump in with these guys after not racing; I think I underestimated it. When you re riding by yourself you get a little bit of false confidence. Then you get out here and you realize you need a little bit more intensity during the week. First moto I was back to about 13th, started to find a little groove and then I went off the track and there was like a 15-foot high wall that I went off of! I had to pull into the pits and take my goggles off but I never gave up. I got 25th which was pretty awful, second moto was a little better and I got 15th. 19 JUSTIN BOGLE 11TH 450MX (4-DNF) GEICO Honda s Justin Bogle was poised for having one of the best days of his racing life after finishing a career high fourth in the first moto and pulled the holeshot in the second moto. That s when Pourcel crossed his path and took out his front wheel causing him to crash. Later on, Bogle went down again that required a trip to the hospital for a check-up. First off, I love Southwick and I love that it s back, said Bogle. I holeshot the first moto and led for a while and had a lot of fun in that one. Second moto, I got another holeshot and that amped me up! Then I got taken out pretty unnecessarily by some guy. I came from around last to 12th or 13th and then had a big crash. I got up and tried to finish but ended up pulling off and heading to the hospital for a while but everything checked out good, just banged up!

LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP P102 The Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/ Red Bull KTM Team suffered another blow when it lost Shane McElrath for what appears to be the rest of the season. McElrath crashed just a few laps from the end of the second 250MX while battling with Alex Martin. He reported via Instagram that he suffered a grade-three AC separation of his shoulder, bruised lungs and seven broken ribs. The injury comes at a particularly bad time since he has been surging as of late. He has finished in the top 10 in the last six of seven motos, which included a second place at Muddy Creek. McElrath was holding down eighth in the 250MX championship. Yoshimura Suzuki s Blake Baggett had a terrible day at Southwick. He suffered a big crash (aggravating his already injured shoulder) in practice that would later haunt him in the motos. He was also collected in a first-turn pileup that put him deep in the field and he would end up 25th. He chose to sit out the second moto. I had a big crash right off the bat in practice two, Baggett said. It was one of the biggest ones I ve had. I made a little mistake, [over-jumped] the tabletop and had a big get-off at the bottom; my shoulder is sore. I had it checked out, there is nothing wrong with it but couldn t fight through it. It s best not to fight through the second moto. One of the changes Ken Roczen made to his bike in between motos were tires. I switched to a legit paddle [type] tire, Roczen said. Since there is such a hard base I went to a self-cut tire, so it has a more forward pull coming out of the deeper stuff. Now called The Wick 338 and run in the reverse direction, everyone was glad to have Southwick back on the national MX schedule. This was the first time in three years that The Wick 338 has hosted a round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Three years ago, the track appeared to be doomed when the American Legion 338 wanted to end its ties with the track.
