IN THE WIND BAKER INJURED AT X GAMES Brad Baker, of the Indian Motorcycle/Allstate Motorcycle Insurance/S&S Team, was injured while competing in the Harley- Davidson Moto X Flat Track Racing competition at the X Games Minneapolis, July 22. Baker, who is currently third in the American Flat Track Twins-class Championship, suffered a back injury when he went down during a qualifying race and was transported to a local hospital. Scott Baker, Brad s brother, released this statement on Monday, July 23: I just wanted to give you an update on my brother. Thank you all for being so loving and supporting. I still can t give a whole lot of details yet because his prognosis is not final and I want to respect him and his team s privacy. After being rushed to the hospital yesterday, Brad spent the rest of the day undergoing back surgery to repair a multiple fractured T6 vertebrae. The scary part was fragments of the vertebrae damaged his spinal cord and were putting pressure on it causing paralysis from the middle of his back down. Good news is his cord was not severed and the doctors are happy with how the surgery went repairing his vertebrae and relieving the pressure. Brad is in good spirits and is always so thankful even in the worst of situations. Now we walk this road of recovery with him, praying and hoping for the best outcome for him. I have no doubt he will [be] back doing what he loves, but please continue to give him healing uplifting strength. Love you guys, thank you. 3 IN THE WIND MEES WINS X GAMES GOLD Motorcycle flat track racing returned to the X Games for the Harley-Davidson Flat Track and Harley-Davidson Hooligan races. It s the fourth year of the event and 2018 marked the first time for a repeat winner 2016 gold medalist Jared Mees claimed that honor, as he has most everything else this year. For the first time, the event was held indoors, inside U.S. Bank Stadium, the home of the Minnesota Vikings. Last year s race was also in Minnesota, but at the Mall of America with room for a larger track. The track inside the stadium was much smaller (around one-eighth of a mile). As expected, the racing featured a lot of pushing, shoving and bar banging. A series of heat races and semi finals whittled the 24-rider field down to six riders for the 20-lap main event. The quick heat races were won by fast qualifier Kenny Coolbeth (Nila Racing/Columbia Avionics, Indian Scout FTR750), Jeffrey Carver (Roof-Systems of Dallas TX/Ben Evans Racing, Kawasaki Ninja 650), Sammy Halbert (Harley-Davidson Motor Company/Vance & Hines, Harley-Davidson XR750) and Mees (Indian Motorcycle/Rogers Racing, Indian FTR750). Two semi finals would decide the starters. Carver got a great start in the first semi and led Coolbeth and Briar Bauman (Roof-Systems of Dallas, TX/Zanotti Racing/Indian Scout FTR750) into the main. In semi two Mees took control right from the drop of the gate and led Halbert and Jake PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVE HOENIG Jared Mees (9) leads Briar Bauman (14), Sammy Halbert (1), Jeffrey Carver Jr. and Jake Johnson (5) at the X Games. P30 Johnson (Estenson Racing/McCandless Truck Center, Harley-Davidson XR750) home. When the gate dropped for the final it was Carver first into turn one. Coolbeth, Halbert and Mees were right behind, but Mees inside starting position gave him the perfect spot to grab second as Halbert, Coolbeth and Johnson were forced wide. Bauman, who had started on the outside,

The running order stayed the same for a few laps, then Carver left just a small opening exiting turn four. I went in and bumped Jeffrey and moved him out of the way and shot to the bottom, said Mees. The typical short track move left Mees with a clear track, but it also opened a lane for Bauman and Halbert to get by. Bauman stayed close as Mees clicked off the laps. I was on him early. I was thinking I would save it to the end and make a good move, said Bauman. The front started to go something was happening. It became hard to ride quickly. I just held on to it. I was making so many mistakes. I was going slow. Last year s gold medalist Sammy Halbert was putting pressure on Bauman and Jake Johnson was closing fast. The last few laps found Bauman playing defense. After being in second for most of the race I just couldn t lose it at the end. I told Jared before the main, whatever happens, happens. You know indoor short tracks, said Bauman. He understands how it works. If the opportunity would have come, I was going to run into him. That s the only way we had to pass here. I never got the opportunity, but he understands how it works. Bauman had his hands full and Mees was on cruise control. It s indoor racing and anything can happen, said Mees. We just wanted to get off clean and smooth and we did. I needed to stay smooth and stay on the bottom. Didn t want to blow the groove. It was just like when I was a kid. I grew up on this stuff. Another rider who grew up on this stuff is Jake Johnson and he was catching the Bauman- Halbert battle. I rode behind Kenny for a couple laps. He made a mistake and I got by him, said Johnson. I saw the guys up front were kind of stuffing and jamming. There was a lot of stuff going on up there. I figured if I just stayed calm and did my thing they d make a mistake. It kind of ran through my head going into three on the last lap of starting some chaos, but there really wasn t an opening. I just waited, and Briar got a little out of shape between three and four and I saw Sammy go for it. I thought this is going to be good for me. Sure enough, they got together, and Sammy went down. I was able to come home in third. I got a little bit of a gift there, but I believe patience paid off a little bit. Dave Hoenig Harley-Davidson Flat Track Racing Final 1. Jared Mees (Ind) 2. 5 IN THE WIND P42 TOTH WINS RATTLESNAKE NATIONAL ENDURO Josh Toth ended the stranglehold that the Baylor brothers have had on the Kenda AMA National Enduro Series in 2018 with an impressive win at the Rattlesnake National Enduro in Cross Fork, Pennsylvania, July 22. Going in, Steward Baylor had won two of the four races so far, while his brother Grant Baylor had won the other two. Toth s win at round five ended any chance of a Baylor sweep of the season. Josh Tosh captured his first AMA National Enduro win at the Rattlesnake Enduro in Pennsylvania. The victory was Toth s first-ever in the series and it vaulted the FMF/KTM Factory racer into a tie for first in the series standings with Steward Baylor, solidifying Toth s status as a championship contender this season. At the end of the day, Toth won one test and finished 31 seconds ahead of runner-up Ben Kelley with Steward Baylor another 15 seconds back in third. This is incredible, said Toth. I had a feeling this week that I would do really well at this race I knew I d be competitive in this type of terrain and I m pumped to get that first win out of the way. Toth s roommate, longtime riding partner and fellow Connecticut resident Ben Kelley nailed down second place, stealing the spot from Steward Baylor in the last three tests by 15 seconds at the finish. Kelley also claimed his first test win at the Rattlesnake. Coming into this race I was excited and felt I could do really good in the rocks, said Kelley. I felt good all day and I just really wanted to win a test and I was happy to get it done in the last test. Steward Baylor (Tely Energy Racing KTM) rounded out the podium in third. After winning the first test of the day, he struggled the remainder of the day, especially in tests two and three. I just struggled to find that groove, said Steward. After I won that first test, I just spent a lot of time missing lines and hitting trees. This is one of my favorite tracks, but this year it just wasn t my day. However, a nasty crash in test four left him temporarily shaken, bruised and suffering a dislocated shoulder. I came around a corner and all of a sudden I was in some rocks that threw me headfirst into a much bigger rock, said Grant. It demolished my bike and I popped my shoulder out. Grant recovered and managed a shaky 15th for the test, but still managed to finish fourth overall after turning in the fourth-fastest time in the final test. Fifth overall went to FAR Racing GasGas North America s Andrew DeLong. The former National Enduro champion has been on the comeback trail in 2018, getting back up to speed after spending the last few years dealing with a nagging wrist injury. After five rounds, Toth and Steward Baylor sit atop the series standings with 123 points each. Meanwhile, Ben Kelley moved ahead of Grant Baylor by one point to take over third in the standings, 92 points to 91. Buttrick rounds out the top five with 77 points. Shan Moore OVERALL 1. 7 ROUND 8 / JUNE 21, 2018 MILLVILLE, MINNESOTA / SPRING CREEK MX MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS P70 took the moto lead with just three laps left to go, then went on to win by about seven seconds over Musquin, Roczen, Baggett, Barcia, Peick, Hill, Bloss, Webb and Nicoletti. Then came Miller and Bogle, marking Bogle s best moto finish of the year so far. And just like that, with his 1-1 performance on the day, Tomac gets the red plate back on his motorcycle, while Roczen was second overall (2-3) and Musquin third (4-2). Baggett (3-4) and Barcia (5-5) rounded out the top five overall. I had so much motivation from last weekend, the way that went, Tomac said. I was just spun up today. I was ready to go. I always have fun here. The past couple years haven t been awesome but this year we were on it. Tomac now leads the championship by seven points over Musquin, while Barcia sits almost 50 points behind Musquin and just eight points in front of Roczen as the series heads down the stretch. Aaron Plessinger was stoked to pull off another dominant performance in the 250MX class. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONSTER MEDIA 250MX Aaron Plessinger might have finally hit his stride. Prior to the Spring Creek MX National in Millville, Minnesota, Plessinger had won three rounds of the 2018 Lucas Oil AMA 250cc Pro Motocross Championships, all with 1-1 scores, but in the other four rounds of racing, Plessinger had only scored two podium moto finishes and had failed to string together two overall wins in a row. Until today. Plessinger was dominant at the last round at RedBud, and after a weekend off, he came out looking like the same guy at

ROUND 8 / JUNE 21, 2018 MILLVILLE, MINNESOTA / SPRING CREEK MX MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS P72 Spring Creek, going 1-1 for the overall. Joey Savatgy (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki) got the holeshot to start the opening moto, but Savatgy handed the lead to Jordon Smith (TLD/Red Bull KTM) about halfway through lap one when Savatgy washed the front end out in freshly watered dirt at the bottom of one of Spring Creek s massive hills. Smith led Plessinger s teammate Justin Cooper, Savatgy s teammate Austin Forkner, Plessinger, and Chase Sexton (Geico Honda), while erstwhile runnerup in the championship chase Alex Martin (who literally grew up riding at the Spring Creek facility) rounded the first lap at the tail end of the top 10. Plessinger went to work right away, and once he found his way by Forkner, he used late braking at the bottom of the same hill on consecutive laps to dispatch of both Cooper for second and then Smith for the lead. Plessinger took the moto win

VOL. 55 ISSUE 29 JULY 24, 2018 P73 PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONSTER MEDIA about 7.5 seconds in front of Forkner, followed by Smith in his first moto podium of the year, and then Cooper, Shane McElrath, RJ Hampshire and then Martin in seventh. Behind Martin came Sexton, Colt Nichols, Savatgy and Dylan Ferrandis. Martin, disappointed with his moto-one finish, came sweeping through to grab the holeshot to start moto two over Plessinger, Cooper, Hampshire, Smith, Savatgy and Forkner, and then Plessinger used the exact same downhill he used twice in a row in moto one to go by Martin for the lead late in the first lap, and then he took off. Plessinger won by about 6.5 seconds over Martin, Cooper, Savatgy, Sexton, Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Smith, Ferrandis, Nichols and Mosiman s teammate Mitchell Harrison. Forkner (Above) Plessinger got past early leader Joey Savatgy. (Right) Home favorite Alex Martin was hoping for a win but even he couldn t catch Plessinger.

ROUND 8 / JUNE 21, 2018 MILLVILLE, MINNESOTA / SPRING CREEK MX MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS P74 went down late in the race and had to stop in the pits for repairs, ending up 18th in the moto. Plessinger took the overall on the day with a 1-1 score over Cooper s 4-3 for second overall and Martin s 7-2 for third. The 14 points Martin lost to Plessinger on the day pushed Plessinger out to a 49-point lead with four rounds (eight motos) left to run. Last time I went 1-1 and then had a few bad races, Plessinger said. I rebounded at RedBud, but it was pretty disheartening going 1-1 then not having too great of races. That really put me in a spot. I could have been in a better spot in the points if I didn t do that. I feel great. I feel like a million bucks right now. Hopefully I can carry this through the season. CN 450MX 1. 11 ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE P76 MOTOAMERICA FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CHAMPI TURN AND BURN The Utah round may very well prove critical in the race for the 2018 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship as Cameron Beaubier put the screws to defending champ, Toni Elias BY RENNIE SCAYSBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN J NELSON Cameron Beaubier went into the sixth round of the 2018 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship with a comfortable 29-point lead over defending champion, Toni Elias, after a stellar double victory at Laguna Seca last month. By the time he was getting ready to board the plane back home to California, Beaubier had increased his title advantage to a massive 49 points after winning race two with four rounds and 200 points remaining, as Elias who won race one to take Suzuki s 200th AMA Superbike victory crucially crashed out while running second. Beaubier had earlier set the Superpole time on his Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing YZF-R1 with a massive second advantage over Elias (Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000) with M4 Ecstar Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider Jake Lewis third, seconds off Beaubier. The first race distilled into a battle of the two talents who have had the run of the championship for the past three years, as Beaubier led Elias for the first 14 laps. The Spaniard sliced past at the end of the pit straight on lap 14, but Beaubier refused to give in, sticking strong to the back of the factory Suzuki and making the over-under pass halfway around the final lap to put himself on course for win number five in a row. Yet Elias wasn t finished. Two corners later the former Moto2 World Champion dived up the inside of Beaubier, who ran wide off track and later suffered a couple of small front-end losses in the final turn, sealing the win for Elias and Yoshimura Suzuki. Third went to Attack Performance Herrin Compound Yamaha YZF-R1 s Josh Herrin from Garrett Gerloff (Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing Yamaha YZF-R1) and Lewis. It is nice to get that 200th victory for Suzuki, Elias said. We started off the weekend with a little Japanese- American barbecue (Elias referring to his flamed-out bike after a crash on Friday) but at the end, my team put the bike back together, so I could continue the plan. But I found a tough guy (in

ONSHIP Cameron Beaubier is sitting pretty in the championship after a blunder in race two by Elias. VOL. 55 ISSUE 29 JULY 24, 2018 Briefly... P77 SMASH IT UP Josh Herrin was lucky to walk away from a monster crash in morning warm up for Sunday s race when he highsided his Attack Performance Herrin Compound Yamaha at over 130 mph, the bike going end-over-end and ripping the front-end clean off. As a result, Herrin was unable to take part in the second race on Sunday. FONG GONE Bobby Fong was a notable absentee from race two on Sunday. After retiring his Quicksilver/Lexin/Hudson Motorcycles Yamaha YZF-R1 with a mechanical issue in race one, Fong was all set to compete in race two but was told on race morning he would not front the grid. When asked by Cycle News why this was the case, Fong said, This weekend was again a challenge for the team and myself and the decision was made by the team that I would not race (Sunday). I wanted to race and was there in the morning ready, willing and able to race. I hope that everyone understands the frustration by all of us in this situation as the team and I work through it. Fong was unable to confirm if he would be back for the next round at Sonoma in two weeks time. BBQ TIME Toni Elias had a spectacular crash during practice on Friday, losing the front of his Yoshimura Factory Suzuki machine going into Toole Turn. His machine hit the ground hard, split the gas tank open and burst into flames, rendering it a trash bin job once the marshals put the fire out. Elias came back the following day to set the second-fastest time during Superpole behind Beaubier.

ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE MOTOAMERICA ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP P78 Toni Elias (1) tries a different braking method while chasing Beaubier in race two. Beaubier). He was fast. Very persistent. His pace was a little bit faster than mine. I was playing my cards at the end, and I found my moment. I could pass him. The last two, three corners, we had a little bit of trouble, but I could win the race. Race two would not be the dream double Elias and Suzuki hoped for to pull them back into real championship contention. Beaubier knew he d lost a battle he should have won in race one, and he wasn t going to let it happen again. The former two-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion charged to the front and began to pull away from Elias, who suffered his second crash of the weekend while in pursuit on lap six. It was a monumental moment in the 2018 championship. Beaubier thus cruised to a 4.2-second victory over Gerloff ahead of Lewis, Mathew Scholtz (Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1), and Roger Hayden (Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing) in fifth. The win handed Beaubier a 49-point lead in the title race, meaning even if Elias won all the remaining races, all Beaubier would need is to take consistent podium places to seal his third MotoAmerica Superbike Championship title. I was able to get around Toni in the first couple of corners, Beaubier said. I just wanted to put my head down and try to go from the beginning. It s pretty tough to race that guy in the last couple laps. We were able to do it. I came around the last section and I saw yellow flags (for Elias crash). I saw the pit board

ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE MOTOAMERICA ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP P80 Elias made a tough last-lap pass stick in race one, but couldn t back it up in race two. and it said I had a decent gap, so I backed it down. I was just trying to hit my marks and be consistent and take as little risk as possible. That was the most stressful for me, just try and make it to the finish. I feel really relieved after today to be able to win here and get a second place and come out with the points lead makes me feel really good going into the remaining races. Second place was Gerloff s best result in his debut MotoAmerica Superbike season and the Texan had broken through another barrier in an ever-improving turn of form. I felt like I could put my bike wherever I wanted, Gerloff said. I was just trying to put my head down and just do my thing because I knew my bike was on point and I knew I had the pace to at least be there at the last lap, if not have a little bit of a gap (over Lewis). Luckily we had the gap. Lewis too stepped it up at Utah for his first podium, finally breaking free of his run of mainly fifth-place finishes this year. I ve been pretty consistent all year, but it feels amazing to get up on the podium, Lewis said. I ve been working real hard this season. I tried to go with Cam and Toni, but obviously the pace was unbelievably fast. Got pretty close to those guys but used a lot of energy and had to burn up a little bit of tire. After Toni crashed pretty early on in the race, it was tough managing that gap plus 0, plus 0, plus 0. We re excited to get the whole team this podium. The top 10 for race two was rounded out by Kyle Wyman (SC Project/KWR Yamaha), Danny Eslick (Scheibe Racing BMW S 1000 RR), Cameron Petersen (Genuine Broaster Chicken Honda CBR1000RR), Jayson Uribe (Genuine Broaster Chicken Honda CBR1000RR) and Bruno Silva (ART Performance Yamaha YZF-R1).

ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE MOTOAMERICA ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP P82 Jake Lewis (85) rode strong for his first podium of the year in race two. Garrett Gerloff (31) and Mathew Scholtz (11) hard at it in race one.

ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE P84 MOTOAMERICA FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CHAMPI In the championship race, Beaubier leads on 248 to Elias 199; Scholtz sits third with 152, Herrin fourth on 151 and Gerloff fifth on 131. SUPERSPORT JD Beach (Monster Energy/Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha) made like a ball and bounced his way to a double victory at Utah, extending his lead in the series to a whopping 82 points over pole sitter Hayden Gillim (Rickdiculous Racing Yamaha), who left with 2-DNF results following his race-two crash. Beach had to contend with Gillim throwing everything at him in race one but coming up 1.3 seconds short; however, there was a protago- nist missing, as M4 Ecstar Suzuki rider Valentin Debise s Suzuki GSX-R600 was pulled from the race with a mechanical issue. That left the two pals all alone up front, with Cory West (TSE Racing Yamaha) holding off the advances of Nick McFadden (M4 medage Suzuki), Braeden Ortt (Fastline Performance/Tuned Racing Yamaha) and Bryce Prince (SC Project/KWR Yamaha) in what was a four-rider battle for the final podium spot. Valentin Debise (53) made it back for race two but couldn t hold off Beach (95) from taking win number seven of the season.

ONSHIP VOL. 55 ISSUE 29 JULY 24, 2018 P85 Frenchman Debise would return for Sunday s race two action and run Beach hard, but the pint-sized Kentucky resident never faltered for win number seven of the season. It was a really good race, Beach said. Val (Debise) was riding really good. He s super-fast. Me and him kind of got a gap to third, to Hayden (Gillim). Then Hayden wasn t able to bring the gap back. I thought we were going to have a threerider battle until he went down. After about lap five or so, I started struggling with the front tire a lot. Val was able to get a little bit of a gap on me, but after about lap 10 or so, I think he made a little bit of a mistake. The front seemed like it got better. The last five laps, I felt like it was a whole new bike. I was able to get by him on the front straightaway, and I tried to put my head down the last three laps or so. I did my fastest lap on the last lap. I m really looking forward to the next round. Third place went to Ortt for his second podium of the year, followed by Prince and McFadden. In the title race, Beach sits pretty with 215 points over Gillim s 133. West is at 95, McFadden has 94 and Ortt has 87.

ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE MOTOAMERICA ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP P88 iii My Own Race: 11 MATHEW SCHOLTZ 6-4 SUPERBIKE Saturday s race didn t pan out the way we wanted it to, said Mathew Scholtz of his weekend. But, we knew where we needed to make the bike better. Overnight, my crew worked really hard, and they came up with a good setup. The Sunday morning warm-up went really great, and we ended up second fastest. We knew we had a good pace, and we were confident for the second race. My start was absolutely shocking, but I made a few passes on the first lap, and I got into the group that was fighting for third. We had a race-long battle, and there weren t too many passes because the pace was so high, and everyone was part of the train. Garrett (Gerloff) and (Jake) Lewis managed to gap Roger Hayden, and I managed to pass Roger with two laps to go. I kind of did close the gap to Lewis and Gerloff, but we ran out of laps. Overall, I m very happy with the progress we made and the fact that we moved back into third place in the championship. 53 VALENTIN DEBISE DNS-2 SUPERSPORT The problem was my own fault because I crashed this morning trying to put in a fast lap, Valentin Debise said of his Saturday DNS. When you crash sometimes there are consequences, and that s what happened today. My mechanics did everything they could to repair the bike but it s almost impossible to check and fix everything on the bike in so little time. Yeah, I m disappointed, but there s another race tomorrow and everyone saw that I m fast this weekend. I won t give up. 1 TONI ELIAS 1-DNF SUPERBIKE It is an honor to be a part of this historic win, Elias said of Suzuki s 200th AMA Superbike victory. To be there along with all of the great riders who have won with Suzuki in the past means a lot to me. This was a team effort and I also want to thank the entire Yoshimura Suzuki team for working so hard to give me a great motorcycle. This is a day I will long remember. STOCK 1000 The Stock 1000 encounter saw a first-time winner in his first-ever MotoAmerica race. Chad Lewin (Team Lewin Estates Yamaha) turned in a sensational effort for a man who says he s only ridden a bike about four times in the last three years. The California real estate agent took the win over series leader Andrew Lee (Riderzlaw Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R) and local hotshot Oleg Pianykh. Regular race winner and pole sitter Travis Wyman (Weir Everywhere Racing BMW S 1000 RR) led much of the race before crashing unhurt and rejoining to cross the finish line in seventh. As a result, Lee now has a 21-point lead Chad Lewin (448) promptly took an unexpected victory in the Stock 1000 class.

ROUND 6 / JULY 20-22, 2018 UTAH MOTORSPORTS CAMPUS / TOOLE, UTAH ROAD RACE MOTOAMERICA ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP P90 over Wyman in the standings. Fourth went to Chad Swain (Hustle Hard Racing BMW S 1000 RR) with Jeremy Coffey Superbike Underground BMW S 1000 RR) rounding out the top five. This was a fun weekend, said Lewin. I ve gotten on a bike about four times in the last three years. I started riding it about six months ago because of my good friend Jason Pridmore. I m kind of doing this race off a dare, but obviously, I m a racer at heart, and I didn t want to get second so I just sent it in there and it worked out. In the standings, Lee holds firm with 80 points from Wyman s 59, Shane Richardson with 38, Timothy Bemisderfer with 34 and Stephen Incledon at 30. TWINS CUP Ghetto Customs Suzuki rider Chris Parrish took his second victory of the season at Utah to stretch his championship lead to 27 points over Jason Madama Jason Madama held the advantage early in the Twins race but the win would go to Parrish (128). (Altus Motorsports/Yamaha FZ- 07/MT-07), who crashed while battling for the lead. Parrish thus took the victory over pole sitter Danielle Diaz (Danielle Diaz Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650), who borrowed MotoAmerica operations manager Niccole Cox s own machine for the event. Third went to a name familiar to Cycle News readers: Fillice. Not Jimmy, this time it was his son Justin at the controls, as he piloted the Team Legacy Racing/Suzuki SV650 to third in his return to road racing after a neardecade-long hiatus. I didn t know Jason (Madama) had crashed until the final couple of laps, Parrish said. I expected him to come around me near the end, but I tucked in and did my own race. I don t know how fast the last lap was, but I just kept going. I finally did turn around to see how tough it would be at the start/finish line, and he wasn t there. Man, it really was a great race. I m 41 years old, and it s hot. Man, I m ready to sit down. In the series, Parrish leads with 110 over Madama s 83, Ryan Roth is third at 36, Diaz fourth with 33 and Curtis Murray fifth with 32. JUNIOR CUP The Liqui Moly Junior Cup again saw two of the most frantic races of the program, with a new face making his presence felt. The race-one script went according to the championship plan, with KTM Orange Brigade/ JP43 Training rider Alex Dumas notching pole position and his sixth victory of the season over Ashton Yates on the Yates Racing Kawasaki and MP13 Racing/ Yamaha s Cory Ventura credited with third after Jamie Astudillo (Quarterley Racing/On Track Development Kawasaki), who crossed the line third on track, was docked one second for weaving on the straight and thus

Ashton Yates (22) was DQ d for not obeying a ride-through penalty due to jumping the start. dropped to eighth place. I knew that Ashton (Yates) would run a really good race, and I was trying to keep up with Jamie (Astudillo) at the start, Dumas said. Then, later in the race when Jamie had an error, I stuck with Ashton, and eventually I drafted past him on the front straightaway. Sunday s would be a race that could prove crucial in the championship after Yates was deemed to have jumped the start and handed a ride-through penalty. The Georgian ignored the penalty, was black flagged and disqualified from the results, meaning Dumas would leave Utah with a 48-point lead after finishing the race in third. Brazilian Renzo Ferreira, who finished fourth in Saturday s race aboard his Quarterley Racing Kawasaki, came home with the victory in Sunday s race, his first in the MotoAmerica Junior Cup. Renzo held off Jay Newton (AGVSport America Monkey- Moto Yamaha) and Dumas, with Astudillo crashing out on the final lap while in the leading pack. I really had to work hard for this win, Renzo said. It s amazing being here again. I was racing in the KTM Cup in 2016, and I m really happy to be here in MotoAmerica again. I just think, from now, I m going to start practicing again and get into the championship again. Dumas leads the series with 166 over Yates 118, Sean Ungvarsky (KTM Orange Brigade/ Ghilliman Racing KTM RC390R) lies third at 105, Ventura holds fourth with 97 and Newton is fifth with 87 points.
