4 IN THE WIND JANNIRO WINS EIGHTH AMA SPEEDWAY TITLE Billy Janniro captured his eighth AMA National Championship during the final round of the AMA Speedway National Championship Series at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn, California, September 16. With this championship, Janniro broke a tie with Mike Bast, who won seven AMA Speedway National Championships in the 1970s. Janniro finished out the championship with 72 points, followed by Max Ruml with 65 and Broc Nicol with 52. Gino Manzares, Luke Becker, Dillon Ruml, Aaron Fox, Austin Novratil, Gage Geist and Eddie Castro completed the top 10. CN Billy Janniro accepts the AMA Speedway number-one plate for the eighth time. P24 NO WEBB FOR MEC Yamaha s Cooper Webb won t be suiting up for next month s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas because of a thumb injury. Webb injured the thumb during practice at the USGP of America in Florida and will require surgery. I m extremely bummed that I will miss out on the Monster Energy Cup, I ve had success in the past at that event, and I was really looking forward to racing the new 2018 YZ450F under the lights in Las Vegas, Webb said. I will be getting surgery today [September 20] on my thumb to speed up the healing process and make sure that I m 100% for the 2018 season. Anaheim is the main priority right now, and I will be doing everything in my power to make sure I m healthy and focused when the gate drops. 5 ROUND 17 / SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY / FORT WORTH, TEXAS FLAT TRACK 2017 AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP P64 CARVER S TEXAS BBQ JEFFREY CARVER GETS MAIDEN TWINS WIN STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVE HOENIG / FLAT TRAK FOTOS Round seventeen of the American Flat Track season was AFT s David vs. Goliath, as the ultimate privateer took on the factory might of Indian Motorcycle and Harley-Davidson Motor Company on the Texas Motor Speedway s high banked dirt oval. Jeffrey Carver (Ben Evans Racing/ Carver s BBQ) is definitely an Old School motorcycle racer. Carver rides as many outlaw, non-national events as possible to make enough money to get to the next race. I started my own program at the beginning of the year and showed up at Daytona with just one motorcycle. We ve been traveling the circuit all year, said Carver. We slept on the ground after a couple nationals this year because we didn t have any money. We are just going for it. Jeffrey Carver celebrates his first Twins win in front of the Texas fans.

7 ROUND 17 / SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY / FORT WORTH, TEXAS FLAT TRACK 2017 AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP P66 Carver teamed up with Goodwin Racing for the first time in AFT Twins competition on their Harley-Davidson XR750. I ve ridden Harleys off and on a few years ago, said Carver. We thought the last two races of the year would be a good place to bring it out. With this shape of track, I really thought it had what it took. I m really glad I took the gamble and rolled the dice. This is my first Twins win. I m so stoked. On the twins this year, I m finally getting comfortable. I m eager to be back up there and prove that I belong up front. Carver led the 18-rider, 25-lap AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines field into the first turn, but he had the (Left) Carver gave Harley-Davidson a rare win this year, but it was a private H-D. (Right) Bryan Smith (1) and Johnny Lewis (10) battle for the last spot on the podium. Lewis got it. Briefly... Sixteen years ago AMA Pro Racing brought Grand National racing to the Texas Motor Speedway, but that race was rained out just as the national was coming out for the start. Tornado watches and severe thunderstorms kept the crowd down in 2001, but this year s race had a much better turnout in the large grandstand. During the down time since the last race in Pennsylvania, Indian Motorcycle/Allstate Insurance s Brad Baker suffered a severely broken jaw in a bicycle training accident. While Baker recovers, the team opted to have Larry Pegram, who is the NBCSN American Flat Track color commentator on the weekly TV shows, ride Baker s Indian. Pegram s last Grand National race was in 2010, but the three-time national winner was up to the task and put his Indian Scout FTR750 into a 10th place finish in the Texas race. This was Jeffrey Carver s first win on a twin, but it was his second Grand National victory, having won the Castle Rock TT in The Goodwin Racing XR750 was not new to Carver, as he had used the bike at the X-Games, where he was a solid third when a flat tire on the

Jared Mees (Indian Motorcycle/ Rogers Racing Indian Scout FTR750) and Bryan Smith (Indian Motorcycle/Allstate Insurance, Indian Scout FTR750) looked poised to make their normal charge to the front, but Carver had other plans. The track didn t have a visible groove, but there was little room for error in finding the fast away around. I was just trying to stay very, very smooth, said Carver. I was trying to keep it as hooked up as possible and stay off the gas. Carver s lead grew to about three quarters of a second and remained there until very late in the race, when the lead duo last lap dropped him to fourth. The Gary Goodwin/Ben Evans Racing Harley was just tracking out there, said Carver. I ve ridden this bike before. We were due one. This motorcycle has been really good to me. The points race in the AFT Twins class has been settled. The only close riders are Brian Bauman and Jeffrey Carver, who are separated by one point for fifth place behind Jared Mees, Bryan Smith, Brad Baker and Sammy Halbert. Shayna Texter s win has kept her AFT Singles points chase alive, but barely. Kolby Carlile holds a 24-point lead going into the last race of the year. A win is worth 25 points. Brandon Price had been in second, but his DNF has eliminated any chance he held for the title. As an added event the Terry Poovey Privateer Shootout was the opening race of the night with the six fastest AFT Singles riders from timed qualifying racing for $1000 to the winner. Dan Bromley pocketed the cash, while Kolby Carlile, Jeremiah Lindberg, Kevin Stollings, Brandon Price and Morgen Mischler received $500, $400, $300, $200 and $100, respectively.

So many times when the leader catches the tail end it is the leader who suffers, but this time Carver s lead actually increased. I got a little close to one or two of the guys in lapped traffic. I would slip by them and think, okay, now you ve got to put in a really hard lap again. It was good. I ve been in those positions too. Guys try to move out of the way as best they can. The leaders were over eight seconds ahead of a tight race for third between Smith, Johnny Lewis (Team Nila/John Wise, Indian Scout FTR750), Briar Bauman (Zanotti Racing/Rod Lake Racing, Kawasaki) and Rob Pearson (Harley-Davidson of Mees admitted that he was second best on this night. But he s still the champ. Staten Island/CR Motorsports, Harley-Davidson XR750) I was checking here and there and I saw him [Mees]. I was definitely trying to stay very smooth, but I was also on the edge of disaster a couple times, said Carver. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn t over pushing and over riding the motorcycle. A couple laps I would slow down and try some different things. I would check to see where he was at and make sure he wasn t closing in on me. I wanted to make sure that I wasn t drawn off my line. On the last lap, Johnny Lewis wedged his way inside Bryan Smith in turn two, but Smith held him off. As they entered turn three Lewis once again leveraged his way inside, this time gaining enough of an advantage to take the last podium spot. Briar Bauman was able to hold off Rob Pearson, who posted his best finish of the year on his XR750, for fifth. Seventh and eighth went to Kawasaki riders Jarod Vanderkooi (Richie Morris Racing/McElroy Packaging) and Davis Fisher (Bob Lanphere Beaverton Motorcycles). Cory Texter (John Wise/Team Nila Harley-Davidson XR750) edged out Larry Pegram (Indian Motorcycle/Allstate Insurance Indian Scout FTR750) and

AFT SINGLES After dominating the middle portion of the AFT Singles season, Richie Morris Racing/McElroy Packaging s Shayna Texter had fallen on tough times. Unfortunately, we re behind in this championship and not where I want to be, said Texter. We got a flat tire at Williams Grove, and obviously everyone knows I m not a TT rider. That s definitely hurt us, but all I can do is

Jesse Janisch (West Bend Harley- Davidson/Rock River Yamaha, Yamaha) grabbed the holeshot in the 15-lap main, only to have Texter roll around the outside and into the lead before the end of lap one. Texter settled into first as a small war broke out over second. It was stressful, the racetrack out there was so slippery, said Texter. You just have to stay calm and keep hitting your points. It took a lot of focus and concentration. Janisch held second with Dan Bromley (Big Momma & Daddy Shayna Texter (52) and Colby Carlile battle it out for the win in the Singles final.

12 ROUND 17 / SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY / FORT WORTH, TEXAS FLAT TRACK 2017 AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP P72 My Own Race: 9 JARED MEES 2ND AFT TWIN He [Carver] got a good start and he had two or three quick faster laps than me and he just pulled away, said Mees. I finally was able to stalemate him and just kind of match his pace. I would push a little hard and then I would make some little mistakes and he would gap me. Then he would make some mistakes and I would inch in. I needed him to make three or four mistakes in a row. Every time he would make a mistake I felt like I needed to push harder to get to him. At the end I was just trying to search around to see if there was anything up there. Hats off to Jeffrey, he earned it. He deserved it. He was the fastest guy. We were second place tonight. 1 BRYAN SMITH 4TH AFT TWINS Lewis is good at stuffing his nose in there and making room. That s kind of what he did, said Smith. I was slow enough and left him enough room to basically take the line away from me. He did it in one and two and I still thought I could get him and hold him off in three and four. I just slipped up the track enough that he damned near took my handlebar out. I had no choice but to stand it up. It sucks, but you can t blame him. He was going for it. He was excited for a third; I was pissed the whole time I was in third. I was just off all day. I don t know if it was me or the bike. I couldn t get a grasp on the track. It looked like there was something above the groove, but you would go up there and it was slick as hell. That was the hardest thing for me out there. You couldn t see the line or where the marbles were or where the greasy spots were. It just all kind of blended in. You were riding like with braille. 10 JOHNNY LEWIS 3RD AFT TWINS Team Nila/John Wise just took delivery of their Indian Scout FTR750 and pilot for the day, Johnny Lewis sat on the privateer Indian for the first time in practice. It was pretty good. The track conditions kind of played in our favor, said Lewis. I think anyone on it probably would have gone fast. It was surprising that the bike just continued to stay that way. Lewis set fast time in qualifying the only ride in the 20-second range at We made some changes and just continued to progress with the track. Jon Cornwell from Ohlins helped all day. That was a big benefit. Charlie and Lou Gerencer were helping me throughout the whole day along with Dave Atherton. John Wise has been a personal sponsor of Charlie s for years. It s been a while since I ve been on the podium. I can t tell you how happy I am. It feels good. 14 BRIAR BAUMAN 5TH AFT TWINS It was a tough race track with a real narrow groove. It was real rough, said Bauman. It wasn t ideal circumstances for our motorcycle, but we made the best of it. We were right there knocking on the door. I think this is like my 27th fifth this year. We are showing that we are always the guy that s right there. We ll keep chipping away. We have one more race left and hopefully we can make something happen there. I was thinking this track was a lot like Charlotte when we got here. It narrowed up quick once you got out there. There wasn t the banking or anything like Charlotte. It was a different race track. Hopefully next year, the groove is a little bit wider.

13 ROUND 17 / SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY / FORT WORTH, TEXAS FLAT TRACK 2017 AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP P74 Deep Pockets Racing/Bromley Motorsports, KTM), Kolby Carlile (Estenson Racing, Yamaha), Morgen Mischler (Mischler s Harley-Davidson & BMW/Steelhorse Law, Honda) and Brandon Price (Parkinson Brothers Racing/DPC Racing, Honda) all bunched behind. By the race midpoint Carlile moved into second and slowly closed on Texter. Carlile repeatedly challenged Texter on the outside, but just could not get by. Bromley also passed Janisch, who was now challenged by Price and Kevin Stollings (Roof Systems Ben Evans Racing, Honda). Texter held to her line and pulled off a much needed win. Carlile was a safe second with Bromley filling out the podium. Just off the leaders came Janisch, Stollings, Mischler and Oliver Brindley (Kawasaki UK/Haith Group, Kawasaki). A broken coil wire ended Price s race just three laps from the end. Cole Zabala (Zabala Racing/Fatboy Racing, Kawasaki), Ben Lowe (Bruce Lowe Excavating/ Lowe-Life Performance, Honda) and Jeremiah Duffy (ERT/Racetech, Honda) rounded out the top 10.
