6 VOL. 52 ISSUE 33 AUGUST 18, 2015 P61 TRAINING MADE FUN The Beta Xtrainer 300 has a lot to offer for both the entrylevel and experienced off-roader PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIT PALMER T here are a lot of cool and interesting dirt bikes on the market these days and the Beta Xtrainer is certainly one of them. The somewhat bizarre Xtrainer (or Crosstrainer) is an all-new model from the small Italian company headquartered in Rignano sull Arno that made its debut earlier this year and will return in 2016 as the exact same motorcycle (in other words, no changes). So, what exactly is the Xtrainer? Is it a learner s bike, an enduro bike, a trials bike or a trail bike? Or is it all four of these things rolled up into one? Beta defines the Xtrainer as: the perfect bike for riders who wish to play-ride without the intimidation of a full-size enduro machine or for the expert rider looking to enhance their technical skills. After riding the bike for the first time, we quickly came to the conclusion that the Xtrainer is indeed a do-all play bike when it comes to just plain having fun on the trail and learning the ins and outs of dirt-bike riding. But, really, the key word here is fun. Sure, the Xtrainer is designed for the entry-level off-road rider but anyone can have blast on this bike.

(Right) Off-road bikes don t get much more agile than the Xtrainer. SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED In creating the Xtrainer, Beta did not simply take one of its race bikes, tone it down a bit and lower the suspension, like it easily could ve done, but instead designed the bike from the ground up with the entry-level rider in mind-though the company did borrow a few key elements from its top-of-the-line two-stroke RR enduro bikes, like the motor. Just about every off-road rider agrees that a 300cc two-stroke motor is just about the perfect size for all-around enduro riding. Tuned correctly, a 300cc two-stroke can provide the best of everything: light weight, excellent bottom-end performance and torque, and unintimidating but meaty power. Plus, two-strokes are simple to work on and easy to maintain. It is for these reasons (and others) that the Italians chose to fit the Xtrainer with the same motor that powers its full-race and EnduroCross Championshipwinning 300 RR but re-(not de- ) tuned it for mellower riding, which was accomplished by installing a heavier flywheel, significantly redesigning the entire exhaust system and retuning the exhaust powervalve, among other things. But these are some of the biggies. Electric starting was carried over from the RR but not the RR s manual kickstarter or lubrication system. Instead, the Xtrainer gets an electronic oil-injection system, which means you do not have the hassle of premixing the fuel with oil before filling it up. It s simple: just keep both tanks full and go riding, just like the old days. And since the Xtrainer is designed to be ridden at a much slower pace than the RR, which means less air passing through the

The motor is carried in a Deltabox molybdenum steel/ perimeter-style frame designed specifically for the Xtrainer. It s 10 percent more compact than a standard off-road bike like the RR and yields reduced wheelbase and a 35.8-inch seat height, which is much lower than most full-size off-road bikes. This is awesome. Being able to plant both feet firmly on the ground builds nothing but confidence for the low-time off-road rider, as well as, for that matter, for the more experienced rider. Another confidence builder is weight, and the Xtrainer doesn t carry around a whole lot of that at just 218 (claimed) dry pounds. Many comparable full-size bikes can weigh up to 230 pounds! Light weight plus a low seatheight equals here s that word (Above) The Xtrainer s compact size, low seat height, light weight and torquey motor makes it the perfect choice for those new to off-road riding. (Right) A slim layout and well thought out ergos will inspire confidence for the lowtime rider. again confidence. Even though the bike is dubbed trainer, it s still a pretty high-tech motorcycle. It gets adjustable front and rear Ollé-supplied suspension components; the front, a 43mm inverted fork offering compression damping and spring preload adjustability; the back, a single shock with the same adjustments but rebound as well. Wheel travel at both ends is a generous 10.6 inches. It has front and rear disc brakes a 260mm floating rotor up front and 240mm solid rotor out back. Like a full-size bike, the Xtrainer is fitted with a 21-inch front wheel and an 18- inch rear wheel, which are both wrapped by GoldenTyre-made rubber, which uses a somewhat softer-than-usual material. The Xtrainer also has a quickrelease seat (which is handy for accessing the oil container), a

10 VOL. 52 ISSUE 33 AUGUST 18, 2015 P65 no-tools quick-access air filter, and an enduro meter. The Xtrainer s rather large 2.25-gallon fuel tank means that it will carry you farther than you ll probably want to go on a single ride. TACKLE ANYTHING Even though Beta doesn t want you to call it a trials bike, the Xtrainer certainly has a trials-bike feel, and that s how you tend to ride it at first. The trials-bikesounding motor is electricsmooth, has tons of torque and simply refuses to stall. It s also very quiet. All things trials-like. A newbie might be nervous about the Xtrainer s 300cc displacement, since most entrylevel bikes tend to be 250cc or less, but you ought not to be, since the Xtrainer s motor is ridiculously user friendly. You just can t get into trouble with this motor. Release the hydraulically operated clutch without hardly any revs at all, and the bike surges forward in a very controllable manner it won t rip out of your hands if you mistakenly give it a little too much throttle,

11 QUICKSPIN 2015 BETA XTRAINER either, but it will lunge forward a bit if you give it a good twist on purpose. Either way, a beginner will master launches quickly on the Xtrainer. Once moving, the Beta s motor is extremely docile but far from being boring. It makes decent, snappy power at just about any rpm, but it certainly likes to be ridden in the first half of the powerband best; the lower the rpm the better. Revving it out won t get you where you want to go any quicker than just shortshifting it through its six gears. The Xtrainer definitely feels smaller than a full-size bike but far from feeling trials-like. Any similarities end here. The Xtrainer might be a small motorcycle, but it doesn t feel cramped; the handlebars/seat/footpeg relationship was well thought out, though the seat foam is a little on the stiff side. Suspension is squishy soft, which is just fine for the new rider. The back end noticeably sinks when you climb aboard, giving your feet an even better hold on the ground. Heavier and/or more experienced riders might want to crank up the preload a bit at both ends, but, really, right out of the crate, the Beta s suspension is set up just fine; after all, this bike isn t designed to blaze across the valleys like the Beta RR models are. The Xtrainer feels light and agile on the trail; this, combined with its ultra-torquey and un-stallable motor, makes you want to try anything, like that rocky climb over there, or that narrow ravine over there, or that steep ledge over there, or that burned out car over there. Experienced riders will feel almost invincible on the Xtrainer, while the less-experienced rider will feel in control and more apt to try something new. We found ourselves enjoying the hell out of the Xtrainer in the smallest of areas, challenging ourselves over all sorts of terrain, most of which was just a few feet away of each other. With a little bit of imagination, you really don t need large area to pass the time away on the Xtrainer. The ultra-soft knobbies offer fantastic traction on just about any surface. The trade-off with soft knobs is usually a short lifespan, but since the Xtrainer hooks up so well and the power is so smooth, you rarely have trouble with wheelspin, so we expect the rear tire, as well as the front, of course, to last quite some time. Brakes are powerful but not grabby, which is a serious bonus for the beginner. But there s plenty of stopping power up front for experts to do stoppies and tricks like that to impress their friends. Overall, the Xtrainer is a blast to ride and, like the brochure says, will make a great motorcycle for the entry-level rider who is looking for a serious trail bike that he/she will want to keep riding long after they master the rockbeds, hillclimbs, single-track P66 SPECIFICATIONS 2015/2016 BETA XTRAINER 300 ENGINE TYPE:... The two leaders were pushing each other hard in the national and the pace Henry Wiles and Jared Mees set was so much faster than the rest of the field they were nearly 15 seconds ahead of third place at the checkered flag. Of the 18 riders in the field, Wiles lapped all the way up to seventh place. Three-time AMA Pro Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. continued his nearly annual struggle at Peoria. The fourth-ranked rider in the series failed to qualify for the race. He s already used a provisional start earlier in the season at Lima, so Coolbeth had to watch from the sidelines as his championship hopes nearly vanished. Coolbeth is now 46 points out of the series lead. Road race regulars JD Beach and Hayden Gillim showed up on brand new, largely stock motorcycles to race Peoria. Me and Hayden went and bought brand new bikes and threw suspension on them and kept them stock and we ve just been riding them at the house, Beach said. And to come out here and get fourth is just awesome. Gillim also turned in a good performance on his stocker in the GNC2 class taking fifth. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY LAWRENCE Another Peoria TT, another Henry Wiles win, ho hum. But that s not quite how it went down in the 2015 edition of the historic event. At the TT this year Wiles was running as hard as he could in timed qualifying, and when the timing sheets arrived, there it was in black and white: Defending AMA Grand National Champ and current series leader Jared Mees was heading the list and Wiles was second. There were fisticuffs between Robert Pearson and Justin Hittle and members of Hittle s camp after a practice session at Peoria. According to Pearson the two had a run in at a regional race a couple of nights earlier and there was bad blood. I came off the track and Hittle chucked a beer at me, Pearson said. Next thing I know a couple of his buddies jump the fence and started punching continued on next page

He knew he had to get beat sometime at Peoria his streak, after all, can t last forever. And Mees had the bit between his teeth. Series points lead be damned, Mees already had Grand National Championships on his resume, it was clear he wanted to be the guy who knocked Henry Wiles off the throne at Peoria. He was so focused that he would hardly talk to anyone leading up to the race. Mees was obliterating Peoria s daunting jump, making it look like child s play as he soared his Montgomeryville Cycle Center Honda CRF450R 140 feet before landing. Wiles saw what Mees was doing and was sweating bullets. But then things gradually began to turn around. The Zanotti Racing crew began chipping away and finding better setting s for Wiles Honda. And then a rookie Dominic Colindres actually beat Mees in the first heat race. Suddenly Mees didn t look so invincible. Then Wiles won his own heat race by seven seconds. After that win Wiles, feeling newfound confidence, threw in a subtle jab directed at Mees. I want to thank Jared for coming out here and giving me a challenge, Wiles jibed. He

15 continued on next page VOL. 52 ISSUE 33 AUGUST 18, 2015 P107 Turn one; lap one, and this is as close as the field will ever get to Wiles and Mees. Briefly... and trying to choke me. I punched a couple of guys back trying to defend myself. Then the AMA came over and said I was going to be kicked out for fighting, but some of the girls at the tech tent saw the whole thing going down and told Ronnie (Jones) what happened and that I was just minding my own business and these guys came after me. AMA Pro officials indicated that Hittle and some of his buddies were ejected from the facility. In addition to becoming the all-time AMA Pro Grand National TT wins leader with 16, Henry Wiles now has a career total of 27 AMA Grand National victories putting him just one win away from tying the legendary Bart Markel for ninth on the all-time wins list. Wiles has the second-most national wins among active riders behind Kenny Coolbeth who has 34 career wins. I WANT TO THANK JARED FOR COMING OUT HERE AND GIVING ME A CHALLENGE, WILES JIBED. HE CAME HERE TO RACE AND SO DID I. There was much talk of the tire doping controversy as reported on by leading motorcycle racing blogger Mark Gardiner at Bikewriter. com. No one wanted to talk on the record about the tire-doping allegations and the Jared Mees camp denied chemically modifying their tires at Du Quoin, as has been alleged by other competitors. Gardiner received the following statement from AMA Pro Racing on the controversy that emerged after the Du Quoin Mile, where Mees tires seemed considerably more worn than others: AMA Pro did not have consistent custody of the tire between competition and testing. Without being able to conclusively determine that the chemicals were on the tire dur-

You could tell from the tone of his voice that Wiles was beginning to get his Peoria groove back and was starting to savor, rather than dread the upcoming showdown. In the Dash for Cash the two ran wheel to wheel the entire race and even though Wiles took the victory, no one was quite sure if the tactical Mees was holding something back. The 25-lap main event was a thing of beauty. Wiles led from the start and Mees gave chase. Those two absolutely cleared away from the rest of the field. The always impressive Peoria crowd was on its feet. This was a contest! Mees poked and prodded, but couldn t find an opening. Then Wiles poured it on and tried to gap Mees. On laps nine

17 VOL. 52 ISSUE 33 AUGUST 18, 2015 P109 and ten he opened almost a half second on Mees, but then came lapped traffic and it was thick. Wiles said, Once we came up on a group of about four or five riders and I heard Jared right there behind me again and I thought, Man I have to do it all over again. Mees then showed Wiles a wheel once or twice during the middle stages of the race. We were going through traffic so fast it was like those guys were on a warm-up lap, Mees commented. I wanted to go by Henry while we were in traffic, but I had to think about what the guys in front of him were going to do. In the closing laps Wiles managed to build back his cushion on Mees. Mees finally saw it wasn t going to happen JANISCH SCORES A THRILLER In the GNC2 main event, Jesse Janisch earned a thrilling.038-second victory over second-place finisher and current points leader Davis Fisher. Janisch, piloting the No. 32L 34 Racing Honda, started from third on the grid and battled with Fisher on every lap. The two were neck-and-neck heading into the final turn and it looked as if either one could have claimed the victory at the end. Fisher s runnerup effort aboard the No. 67M Parkinson Brothers Racing Honda keeps him sitting comfortably in the GNC2 points lead over Dan Bromley, while Janisch s win, his first of the season, boosts him to 19th in the standings. Briefly... ing competition, the company cannot proceed with issuing a penalty. The company has taken a series of steps towards implementing rules, policies and procedures to correctly handle situations of this nature moving forward. Teams have been told that random tire testing (much like fuel testing) will become a regular part of postrace inspection. The general feeling among the teams is that cheating by chemically modifying the tires to give them better traction will probably be a thing of the past with the new testing protocols. Henry Wiles says his riding style over the jump has modified somewhat over the years. I look back at older videos and I do see a difference, Wiles said. I think a lot of it depends on the condition of the track from year to year. Without George Mack I wouldn t have even had a running motorcycle today so can t thank him enough! Finishing third to close out the podium was No. 30Z Rod Lake Racing pilot Bronson Bauman. It was Bauman s second podium appearance in the last three rounds and he currently sits fourth in the points. No. 19B RLJ Honda rider Justin Jones and No. 69C Bell Helmets Suzuki pilot Hayden Gillim rounded out the top-five finishers, respectively. Like Beach, Gillim is a road racer with extensive flat track roots, and the two put together impressive performances for not having competed in AMA Pro Flat Track this season. Bromley, who sits second in the points behind Fisher, rode his No. 54A Bromley Brothers KTM to a sixth-place finish while Jamison Minor, who currently sits third in the standings, finished 12th in the main event after overcoming a couple of crashes earlier in the day. The race was red flagged twice once for a crash by Jeffery Lowery off the jump and then when Ryan Wells crashed in the first turn. Both riders were beat up in their falls, but should be back to racing soon.

18 ROUND 9 / AUGUST 16 PEORIA RACE PARK / PEORIA, IL FLAT TRACK AMA PRO FLAT TRACK SERIES P110 My Own Race: 17 HENRY WILES 1 ST Henry Wiles was naturally the favorite coming into Peoria 2015, but a lot of people felt Jared Mees was going to step up to challenge the current King of Peoria. One of those who felt that way was Wiles himself. You know Jared races all the time, Wiles said. He s out there racing every little race he can hit and I m not. So he s gotten really tough. We were chasing bike setup a lot of the day. In the morning I was really worried that we might not get it done this year. But the Zanotti crew just chipped away and made the bike better and better as the day wore on. I was happy with the way they prepped the track today. At first it was a little bit one-lined, but then they put some water down and you could run up high on the groove. They guys we were lapping figured that out and that gave me a little room to get by them. When we came up on a big group of four or five guys I heard him (Mees) right on me again. I knew I would have to race smart. Luckily I did everything right. There are so many variables that can happen in a race. You could hit something and your tire starts going low, spin a tube, your bike could break anything. So winning this race for 11 straight years is very special to me and I feel honored to do it here at Peoria. 14 BRIAR BAUMAN 5 TH Briar Bauman scored his fourth top-five finish of the season on his Rod Lake Racing Honda and that moved him up to sixth in the standings. I think we felt like we had a little more, Bauman said. We made a pretty big change (to the bike settings) before we went out. Not huge, but a pretty good change and I think it actually ended up hurting us a little bit. I was running fourth for most of the race and JD Beach got by us there at the end. I looked back and saw I had a good gap so I backed it down and came home fifth. We gained some valuable points and we re just one point out of fifth. We made some adjustments to the bike to try to help get a little better traction and the track changed and we lost traction coming out of (turn) four, but it is what it is. 1 JARED MEES 2 ND Jared Mees said that this year he had two races on the calendar he had marked that he wanted to win the X Games and the Peoria TT. While he didn t close the deal at either one, victory was agonizingly close in both. Mees looked unbeatable early in the day at Peoria; his confidence was at an all-time high. His form off the jump was unreal. He clearly had the longest launches of the day. But then he finished second in his Heat race to rookie Dominic Colindres and rival Henry Wiles beat him in the Dash for Cash, and suddenly the invincibility he had in the morning was lessened. It was a good race, I pushed hard and came up just a little short, Mees said. In talking about encountering a bunch of lapped traffic Mees explained, Sometimes it helped me, sometimes it hurt me. I needed to get a little bit better start. We came off the line one-two and we needed it to be one-two my way. It was a lot of fun chasing him down. We put a lot of work and effort into it and we were right there. 66Y DOMINIC COLINDRES 3 RD The surprise of Peoria 2015 was the performance by the rookie expert Dominic Colindres. The young rider from Northern California stunned the Peoria crowd when he beat Mees in the first heat race. He proved that victory was no fluke when he earned the podium finish, the first in the premier GNC1 class. My first GNC1 race here and getting a podium, I couldn t be more pumped, Colindres said. I got off the start in fourth and quickly made a pass to get third and I stayed there. I saw (JD) Beach and (Briar) Bauman behind me and I put just a little gap on them and kept that to the end and got third. Henry and Jared were far ahead of me. I don t know what we could have changed to get that much more speed. They were running good. I plan on racing the new Babe DeMay FZ- 07 Yamaha the rest of the year. 95 JD BEACH 4 TH Newly crowned MotoAmerica Supersport Champ JD Beach came back to race Pro Flat Track for only the second event this year, the first being the Daytona Short Track in March. Beach looked solid, passing series regular Briar Bauman late in the race to secure fourth. My race went really well, Beach said. I got a good start from the second row and I got by a lot of guys. That helped me a lot, because with the power of the stock bike it was hard to get by guys in the heat race. I got a good start and was doing consistent laps. I got past Briar and then I was catching Dominic a little bit, but then he would gap me again and it went back and forth. To come to home fourth was pretty good for me. I was just hoping to make the main.

19 VOL. 52 ISSUE 33 AUGUST 18, 2015 P111 for him and the second margin of victory for Wiles at the end of 25 laps turned out to be his biggest lead of the race. Wiles not only earned his 11 th - consecutive Peoria TT victory, the win also pushed his career TT win total to 16. That makes Wiles AMA Pro Grand National racing s all-time wins leader in the TT category. Wiles will surely go down in history as the best TT racer the sport has ever witnessed. He talked afterwards of the uncertainty about how he ll do if the race in fact becomes a GNC Twins event in 2016, with competitors racing the big bikes that they normally only run on Miles and Half-Miles. It could be the end of an era since it sounds like we ll be run- Peoria always draws a massive crowd, and they witnessed history with Wiles claiming an incredible 16 th TT victory and his 11 th in a row. ning Twins here next year, Wiles said. I m not against the move, but who knows what will happen then. Besides the history-making race turned in by Wiles, a glimpse into the future perhaps emerged in the form of 21-yearold San Francisco Bay-area rider Dominic Colindres. The GNC1 rookie, who just moved up to the premier class halfway through the season finished third. It marked his first podium in GNC1. Perhaps more importantly, Colindres gained a ton of confidence by holding off Mees in his heat race. He was not able to keep Briefly... be ruts leading up to the jump, a little kicker, a lot of things. I think maybe I do flick the bike a little more sideways than I did years ago. Wiles is generally considered to be the first elite rider to bring in motocross-style scrubbing, where he lays his bike on its side over the jump to stay lower and land sooner. Jared Mees was approaching the jump differently, hitting it with as much speed as possible and flying farther down the landing area, sometimes beyond the last maker of 140 feet. The two main female riders in the GNC1 series Nichole Mees and Shayna Texter did not race at Peoria. Modifications to the classic TT circuit tried during an amateur event held earlier in the summer, which utilized a chicane coming out of turn two, was done by the Peoria Motorcycle Club in order to test ways to slow down the approach speed to the jump. The chicane was not popularly received by fans, but the fact remains that entries in recent years to the national are down considerably, some believe influenced by the spate of bad crashes off the jump, which has spooked a lot of riders.
