Page 1 of 2 October 2011 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Congratulations to all! September and October represent one of the busiest periods of the year for CAMS. I note that there have been 251 CAMS permitted events held since 1 September. CAMS recently presented a number of national champions with their trophies. These included: Australian Off Road Champion Driver - David Fellows Australian Off Road Champion Co-Driver - Mark Bergamin Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Champion Driver - Tolley Challis Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Champion Co-Driver - Greg Flood Australian Modern Tarmac Rally Champion Driver - Matthew Sims Australian Modern Tarmac Rally Champion Co-Driver - Dennis Sims Australian Tourist Trophy - Mark Eddy Australian Motorkhana Champion - Corinne East-Johnston We are now at crunch time for many motorsport championships around the country and I anticipate there will be some exciting moments at race meetings as contests go down to the wire - good luck to everyone competing in these events throughout the remainder of the season. At the end of September, CAMS was involved for the fourth year, in the running of the Singapore Grand Prix and last week was our second year of officials training at the Korean Grand Prix. Australians took up key roles at this event, with a 60-strong delegation in attendance at Yeongam - I would like to thank all the officials for their sterling effort in delivering yet another successful training program. Most of our state councils have recently held their elections and I would like to congratulate the members that have been elected. I would like to welcome our newly elected Board Member from South Australia, Michael Clements, who will take up his position in Congratulations also to Laurence Svenson from Queensland, who was re-elected for a second term. On behalf of all the directors and staff, I would also like to congratulate Jenny White on 30 years of service to CAMS, and thank her for her contribution to the organisation.

Page 2 of 2 Finally, I would like everyone to join with me in welcoming three new appointments to CAMS. Courtney Cuthbertson has joined our customer service team, Daniel Gargaro joins CAMS as the motor sport co-ordinator for motor racing and Samantha Reid has been appointed as the CAMS Ignition program manager. Enjoy your motor sport and drive responsibly. Andrew Papadopoulos President

Page 1 of 4 Bruce Garland Q and A CAMS Joel Whelan interviews Australian off-road legend Bruce Garland. Anyone who knows Australian off-road and safaris has heard of the name Bruce Garland. For those involved in the off-road scene, he is a legend and his efforts in the world s toughest motorsport event, the Dakar, have been widely publicised and celebrated. CAMS recently got the chance to talk to Bruce about his successes, his misfortunes, his health and the 2013 Dakar. Cams: Bruce, how long have you been racing? BG: I was about 17, so that s about 34 years ago, you didn t even have to wear helmets back then either. Cams: What were you racing? BG: The first car I raced was an old Holden, a HD Holden Premier it wasn t a normal one. Then I got a Ford Escort rally car and that was an old clunker that I built up out of bits and I started in Brisbane and then I worked some more up in Mackay so I was up in North Queensland for a fair bit. Cams: Have you always been attracted to off road racing? BG: Well more rallying, but a bit of both. Off-road racing is just rough rally, they re both similar but that s what I ve been more involved in. The majority of it has been off-road rally, if you want to call it that alternative events. Cams: When did you first race in the Dakar and what attracted you to do it? BG: First time I raced in the Dakar was with a Japanese team in 1998, in Africa. And probably because it s the biggest event, the biggest motoring event in the world, so you just want to see what you re made of if you can do it, or how well you can do it. It s like a fever. The Dakar name now is actually really a brand of the culture of doing it. The Australian Safari is a type of Dakar as well, so what happens is it puts everyone outside their comfort zone and it doesn t matter whether you re a multimillionaire or just a regular Joe Bloggs, you re all in their together. Cams: How long does it take to prepare for something like the Dakar? BG: We re starting to prepare now for the 2013 Dakar. If you re serious about getting a serious result, you ve got to start a year out. So our car s got to leave in

Page 2 of 4 October 2012 so we ve got 12 months basically, and everything needs to be ready when it leaves. Cams: How expensive is it setting up a Dakar team? BG: You can never have enough money you can t have too much horse power or too big-a-brakes. You can do it at different levels, but the level that we want to do it at is to try and get the best result that we can. The entry fee is about $16,000 per person, so if you ve got your four service crew [members] that s $16,000 each, plus you ve got to fly them there, and then you ve got to pay for the car, so your entry fee for six people is nearly a hundred-thousand bucks. Cams: How many people worked with you to get the car ready and how many technicians do you take over there with you? BG: We take four with us. First year we went we had about 20 in the team, so it s a big exercise. Imagine going to Bathurst and the amount of effort getting back and you ve got 17 (same sized trips) to do, one after the other. That s what you re doing. It s a huge commitment, there s a lot of sleepless nights planning for it because you ve got to get it all right because once you leave home you haven t got any spare parts. There s no spare parts in South America, so you ve got make sure you ve got everything you can afford to take with you. Cams: How much does the experience gained racing the Holden Jackaroo back in 1998 and onwards throughout outback Australia helped with racing in world class safaris? BG: Oh it s made all the difference I think. The first time we took the complete Aussie team was 2009, that was when we got 11th (in the Dakar.) We won our class and came 11th outright but most people take five years to get to the finish, to finish the Dakar, so to do that and to do the extreme that it was that year there were only 16 cars that did the whole course. So there was maybe 60 finishers out of 200, but only 16 completed the whole course because it was that difficult. So it was a huge achievement for an Aussie team, that s for sure. Cams: You injured yourself earlier this year in the 2011 Dakar - what were you injuries? How bad was it? BG: I broke, I think it was T9 vertebrae in my back and three ribs and then the Doctors pulled us out of the race and made us stay in a hospital for five days, because they said if I crashed again I would have been paralysed from the waist down. Cams: What happened? BG: I just misread it. I was in the dunes with the trucks and a couple of bikes and a few other cars and it was very, very busy and a lot of people, a lot of spectator cars and I was looking at where I was going to go and I looked ahead to where I was driving and it looked fine, and I took too long looking at there was this truck coming in from my right and once you go down into the dunes you lose sight of each other, and I didn t want him landing on top of me, because I got bogged. I was watching what everyone else was doing and in hindsight I should have just stopped

Page 3 of 4 or gone a little bit slower and I just fell over a cliff. I had to stop because I couldn t breathe for 10 minutes so I took some Panadol and some Voltaren and we actually drove the last 30km through the monster sand dunes. Cams: You had major heart surgery this year, tell us about that. BG: I ve had some really good surgeons down in Melbourne, and I was lucky I didn t damage anything in the heart and I ve done rehab and they re saying my heart s better than it was. It s better than most 50-year-old heart. You just don t waste a day. You ve got a different outlook on life. So you just do things now you really like, you just do more of it. Cams: What s been some of your career highlights? BG: I ve won quite a few Australian safaris. Going racing in Asia and the cross country races over there. Someone says what s the best one, and I say everyone one of them, even the bad ones. But they all add to the experience. So it s difficult to pinpoint which one s which because there s been so many. But the best thing is I ve raced on every continent on the planet, except Antarctica. Cams: What was it like coming 11th in the 2009 Dakar? BG: At first I was a little bit disappointed because we had a lot of dramas during the race which lost us quite a few hours, without them we would have been well in the Top-10 and then realising how, since I ve been back twice and haven t finished, and having watched so many other people go and not finish, that I probably took it granted for a bit; but the reality is it s extremely difficult to get a good result, and to even finish it, let alone to get into that top group of people. Cams: How were you treated, what was the reception of people after placing 11th? BG: It was quite amazing. I mean you can win five Australian safari s but you go in one Dakar and I know we won our class but you come 11th and then, everything in the Dakar, it s like the holy grail. And the people, even the team, the mechanics and people who came with us, everywhere when they go out, people go crikey, you ve been to the Dakar, they just go That s unreal! There s just so much awe about the event I think for people that haven t done it, and when you actually do it there s this big awe because you realise how big it is. They have to fence the people off at night time, they actually had to get a fence compound because it s not uncommon to have 30,000 people outside the compound watching, just wanting to be part of the race. Cams: And what are the people like when they get close to you, how do they treat you? BG: Oh like a rock star! That s probably the best way to [describe it.] They re really lovely people, even where you stop, even somewhere on the side of the road there s people having picnics nearly the whole way through. And the two and a half weeks that the race is on it s just lined with people and they re all having picnics and it s like a big festival and we stop and they re making you sandwiches, and they want to give you things, make you steaks, drinks, whatever. I don t even know how to describe it; just that everyone that s in the race is treated like a rock star. Cams: Your aim for the next Dakar? BG: We ll do some events here in Australia, get the whole package finetuned and get the team back together again and just aim to try get that I know we can get that top

Page 4 of 4 ten, a solid top ten, it s achievable, we ve got the team to do it, it s just a matter of doing it. Cams: How would you if you achieve a top 10 result? BG: That would be unreal, that s better than anything. After the year we ve been through, if we could come back and get that, it d be like, I don t know how to describe it, it would be better than anything I ve done anywhere right through my whole life I think. Cams: How long will you take to achieve that goal? Do you think this is something you will continue at until you reach it? BG: No, we re going to do it. We should have done it the last two years but stupid things have gone wrong, one of them, the last year, was my mistake and that won t happen again. But yeah the car, the team s got the speed to be in the top 10.

Page 1 of 4 Officials Muster Welcome to the Officials Muster! This page is brought to you by the Australian Officials Commission. National Survey of Volunteering Volunteering Australia have launched their National Survey of Volunteering. This survey is used to shape the policy and advocacy of Volunteering Australia for the year ahead. Volunteering Australia is our peak body for representing the needs and views of the volunteering sector, and promoting the value of volunteering in our community. According to Volunteering Australia, "...The survey has been conducted annually for more than five years and the data has been used by many sources to influence decision makers about the key issues affecting volunteering. This year we are giving more emphasis to asking what priority volunteers give to particular issues, what would make a difference, and what makes volunteering work well." Sport volunteering is sometimes overlooked when considering volunteering as a whole. We now have the opportunity to create some motor sport representation in the Survey, to help build sport volunteering into a more integral place in Volunteering Australia's strategy. To take the National Survey of Volunteering and contribute to the direction of Volunteering Australia, please click the following link: The survey is open from 10 October to 6 November The results will be released on International Volunteers Day on the 5 December For more information about Volunteering Australia, visit their website here: CAMS Officials Training If you are interested in completing some

Page 1 of 2 Safety Cage Regulations New Safety Cage Regulations for 2012 As competitors should now be aware, the Schedule J - Safety Cage regulations are being updated for If you have not yet done so, CAMS suggests you read through the new regulations (available here), particularly if you intend to either buy or build a new car and/or safety cage in the future. While the regulations themselves have been substantially updated, it is envisaged that there will only be relatively small changes to the way the majority of builders would construct a safety cage, particularly for sports and touring cars. The regulations have been tailored both to good contemporary practice and an appropriate minimum requirement for various events, which is already voluntarily exceeded in most cases. In order to assist with the design, construction or evaluation of a safety cage under the 2012 regulations, CAMS has produced a checklist which is available here. Please be aware that most of the new requirements are not retrospective. However, there are some new provisions regarding protective padding which are being progressively phased in and we recommend you look at these. We are aware that some competitors are trying to complete their vehicles this year to have their vehicle s safety cage grandfathered under the 2011 Schedule J regulations. We appreciate that not everyone will manage to complete the construction and log booking of their vehicle prior to the end of the year, but will have safety cages which have been built in 2011 which will not comply with next year s regulations. CAMS has implemented a process to account for such situations and if you find yourself affected, we would ask that you submit the following documentation as soon as possible, but certainly prior to 20th December 2011: A CAMS vehicle log book application with the known details of the vehicle, including payment; A safety cage registration form, which provides the design and material specification of the installed safety cage; Photographs of the safety cage installed in the vehicle, capturing all aspects of the cage; A brief covering note explaining that you are requesting a log book which will enable the recognition of a 2011 specification safety cage. Upon receipt of this documentation we will be in a position to prepare a 2011 Vehicle Log Book which CAMS will hold pending completion of the full Log Book application process, including sign off by a Pre Log Book Inspection Scrutineer. Please note that the log book process for such a vehicle will need to be completed

Page 2 of 2 prior to the end of 2012 or conformity with the regulations current at the time of final processing shall be required. Should you have any queries about the new rules or this process, please contact CAMS Technical or Customer Service.
