2 Lucindale Shears History Lucindale is a small town of about 400 people in the centre of the Limestone Coast or South East of South Australia. It is 120kms north of Mt Gambier and 370km south of Adelaide, situated 55kms from Kingston on the coast and 45kms from Naracoorte, directly to the east. Lucindale is known as a can do town, and hosts one of the biggest Regional events in South Australia each year, the South East Field Days, run entirely by the Lucindale Lions Club as its major fundraiser. This event is known as the Friendly Field Days, held in March each year, attracts some 20,000 people through the gates in just 2 days. Accommodation is booked out within 120km, with the event a significant contributor to the economy and tourism in the area. The Lucindale Shears started at the back of the pub in 1992 as a Speed Shear, the idea of shearer Brett Cavanough and Publican, Andrew Wilks. They held 2 very successful competitions, then in 1994, with the help of the newly formed Sports Shear Victoria, Cavanough with a small band of local shearers and supporters ran the first Lucindale Sports Shear event at the Football Oval, in the former table tennis shed. With a Speed Shear on the Friday night and a competition on the Saturday, it was hectic times in Lucindale for all concerned. The building of stages, sheep pens etc all took a lot of labour. In 2002 the Lucindale Lions Club invited the Shears to set up on the Field Day site in the former Elad Wool shed. An actual shearing shed that had been donated to the Lions Club by Timbercorp from a property purchased to grow blue gums for forestry. The Lions club dismantled, then rebuilt the shed on site, and Lion David Brooker oversaw the building of a permanent 4 stand shearing board and infrastructure for holding, judging and loading of sheep at one end of the shed. It is now a multi-purpose venue, with stage and excellent kitchen facilities funded by a grant to the Lucindale Uniting Church. The competition is now run on one day, with the Sports Shear events during the day and Speed Shears in the late afternoon-early evening. The Lucindale Shears run their competition in conjunction with the South East Yard Dogs on the same day and site. Lucindale, Keith, and Karoonda, along with Glendambo where instrumental in forming Sports Shear South Australia in There are now 12 Sports Shear affiliated competitions across the State. All except Lucindale are run in conjunction with Country Shows. We are very lucky to have such a great group of volunteers in all aspects across the State assisting us run these events.

5 LUCINDALE SHEARS 2013 REPORT The 21 st Lucindale Shears were held in the Elad Wool Shed at Yakka Park, home of the Lucindale Lions, South East Field Days in mid November. 50 shearers came to compete in the final Sports Shear South Australia event for the year with perfect weather conditions to shear the 500 Border Leicester Merino Cross ewes. Competitor numbers where down on previous years, given some of the recent wet weather delays, many made the most of the fine day to catch up with some weekend work. 5 Novice, 11 Intermediate, 8 Senior and 19 Open shearers competed for cash and prizes of $8000 in the Sports Shear events. 7 Teams, of 2 wool handlers and 2 shearers shore 6 sheep per team, replicating the competiveness and skill of an actual working shearing shed. Open and Intermediate Speed Shear events one lamb to shear in the quickest time, plus a Trans Tasman Speed Shear Challenge had the wool flying and the lambs jumping out the porthole! With 19 high quality Open class shearers, an 8 man semi-final was run, with the top 4 moving into a hotly contested final of 10 sheep. For the second year, the Open Final was run with no front judges. A scrutineer sat in the front row, and the sheep where judged in the pen. The competitors have agreed to this and the crowd love it as they see the lot. Just under 6 points separated the finalists, with Beni Maguire, NZ, shearing for local shearing contractor Barry Clark of Statewide Shearing taking the top place by just 3 points from fellow Kiwi and work mate Kelvin Walker on points. Shannon Warnest placed a close 3rd on points, after a successful return from the Warrnambool National Titles, where he was runner up to the new Australian Champion, Jason Wingfield. Warnest will head to New Zealand in March 2014, for the Masterton Golden Shears, with Wingfield and NSW Shearer, Daniel McIntyre. Wingfield and Warnest will also head to Gorey, Ireland, in May 2014 for the Golden Shears World Championships. Hayden Te Huia, NZ, working in the South East with West Coast Contractor, James Boylan placed 4 th. In the Speed Shear events, 13 Intermediates and 26 Open class shearers, raced the clock to shear a 1 st cross lamb in under 30 seconds. Imran Sullivan, Kangaroo Island, was in awe that he came in first at 30.8 seconds, half a second in front of Warnest. Organiser and sheep supplier, David Brooker, was very pleased with the high calibre and quality of the shearers, and praised the high standard of the competitors across all classes. With shearing in full swing, and competitions most weekends through SA and VIC, shearers and wool handlers are keen to travel and attend the shows for social interaction and of course the prizes. Using local graziers in the mix of the judges, the competitions creates an awareness of the importance and value of well shorn sheep to the breeders bottom line, particularly in the sale yards and in the wool bales. The progression of shearers, through the classes in the past few years is representative of the work done by Sport Shear SA (SSSA) and in turn, Sports Shear Australia, (SSA) in building up these competitions, most held at country shows, across Australia, to an elite and professional level. Many now travel the World circuit, which can include New Zealand, USA, UK, South America and Europe. Australian Wool Innovations (AWI) have directed a large percentage of funding into Shearer and Wool Handling training programmes and also Sports Shear competitions in an effort to raise the profile and importance of the skills required to harvest wool. Sports Shear South Australia have chosen up and coming young shearers Lindsey Meaney from Freeling and Lenny Wilsmore of Kingston as recipients of the SSSA and McIntosh Shearing, New Zealand trip award. They are dedicated and exemplary young shearers who love shearing and are keen to further their skills. They will have a 6 week placement with the McIntosh teams in the North Island of NZ and also have the opportunity to get to the Golden Shears in Masterton, NZ in early March The Lucindale event is one of 12 competitions across the State, the largest in South Australia, and is the last event on the calendar for the Sports Shear circuit, until February.
