2 WELCOME EVENT DETAILS This is the first round of the ACU 2018 British Enduro Championship year and this is a double first, as it is the first time that the Witley & District Motor Cycle Club has organised a BEC event. It s a privilege to be the Chairman at this time in the Club s history and being asked to write a foreword for this special event programme. It is also a great privilege for the Witley Club to be able run this, our very first BEC event. We have, in the past, organised National Trials events for which the Club has received recognition and high praise for excellent meetings. I have no reason to doubt that we shall continue to add to our highly rated reputation and I do believe you will all leave at the end of the day feeling that this was yet another great success for everyone concerned with the organisation of this, the first BEC event of I m sure you will all join me in thanking the Clerk of the Course, Tristan Robinson, for all of the hard work he has put into the preparations, together with Assistants Neil Bowker and Rob Carey, and with Committee colleagues who have assisted throughout the planning and set up. In addition, thanks are deserved by the creators of the two special tests Richard and Dan Alldred, and Shaun and Aaron Smith. Finally, we all owe a massive thank you to all Club members and non-members who have contributed to the work parties, behind the scenes administration, as well as marshalling. Good luck to all of you who take part and on behalf of the Club we wish you every success both in this Championship event and throughout the coming year. I hope you all leave suitably exhausted and completely satisfied with your day. After competing in BECs in all classes since 1989 and assisting with our Classic Enduro at Warren Heath for over 20 years, I persuaded the Committee that we should run a BEC round in Tristan Robinson stepped up as Clerk of the Course and has gathered an organising team who between them have contested 39 x ISDEs, 15 x SSDTs, 6 x WECs, 2 x Dakar Rallies, FFM Championships and decades of BECs in all classes. Warren Heath is a unique forest venue and is rideable in all weathers (yes, we ve run in snow); it resembles Thetford Forest when dry and Brechfa Forest when wet. Rob Carey, Tristan and myself have plotted a rideable but technical course that you should hopefully find enjoyable but demanding. We have two fantastic special tests run by the competitive and enthusiastic Alldred and Smith families. We re also fortunate to have a very experienced and hard-working team of club members who are putting something back into the sport they love by marshalling at this event. Please can I ask you to respect our Marshals/Officials, respect the Forest and enjoy your day. I wish you all good luck and hope the Witley British Enduro kickstarts a fantastic 2018 season for you. 3 FINAL INSTRUCTIONS FINAL INSTRUCTIONS Please read carefully Start/Finish The event will start and finish at Warren Heath, Hampshire, RG27 0QB. It will be signposted from the A30 at the top of Star Hill. The start time will be All riders will start four per minute. Insurance The insurance cover for this event will be PREMIER (limit of liability 40 Million) and Medical Malpractice Insurance (limit of liability 5 million) is included. Competitors are strongly recommended to purchase their own personal accident cover. Parking/Camping Please note that there is strictly no overnight camping at the venue. Any competitor or member of a competitor s entourage found to be camping on site shall be disqualified. FREE overnight event camping is available on Saturday 10th February at the White Lion Antiques Centre, RG27 8AE (see page 4). When arriving at Warren Heath on Sunday 11th February, you must park where instructed by the officials. Venue Strictly no machines or vehicles to be ridden or driven in the forest at any time during the weekend. This includes pit bikes/mini bikes/scooters or quads. Any offences of this nature by a competitor or member of a competitor s entourage will result in disqualification. No trade stands without prior permission. Signing on Saturday 10th February between 1500 and 1800 or Sunday 11th November between 0700 and You will be provided three pre-printed rider numbers which must be clearly shown on the bike, unaltered. Machine Examination Saturday 10th February between 1500 and 1800 or Sunday 11th November between 0700 and All motorcycles must be fitted with front and rear enduro tyres to FIM/ ACU Specification. Helmets must bear the correct ACU stamp. Work area/parc Fermé There is no official work area or Parc Fermé you are required to present your machine at the start line at your booked start time. Route The lap mileage will be approximately 15 miles with two time controls per lap. Any deviation from the prescribed route, including not riding through arrowed gates, will result in immediate disqualification. There may be a route check, marked by blue flags, to prevent course cutting. Special Test There are two special tests The Smith Test and The Alldred Test. These may be viewed on foot only from 1000 on Saturday 10th February. Viewing by bicycle or any wheeled means is prohibited. Refuelling Must only take place in the designated area on an environmental mat. Smoking is prohibited and any competitor working or fuelling a bike not on an environmental mat will be disqualified. Blue Tape Areas The refuelling point, approach to time controls and track crossings will be designated blue tape/ walking pace areas. The penalty for non-compliance is disqualification. First Aid Will be provided by UK SIS. Please report any incidents to event officials. The nearest hospitals are Basingstoke and North Hampshire (RG24 9NA) and Frimley Park (GU16 7UJ). Event Security It is the responsibility of riders to ensure their machine and equipment is kept secure. Neither the Club or ACU accepts any liability in any cases. DISQUALIFICATIONS Not riding at walking pace in the BLUE tape area Smoking in the refuelling area (including E-cigarettes) Refuelling outside designated area or not on environmental mat Not keeping to the course / course cutting Irregularities in lap times recorded suggesting course cutting Failure to keep any support crewmember out of prohibited areas WARNING MOTOR SPORT CAN BE DANGEROUS Despite the organisers taking all reasonable precautions, unavoidable accidents can happen. Please comply with all instructions of marshals and notices and remain in permitted areas only. THEY ARE CONCERNED FOR YOUR SAFETY. 4 5

4 OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION ISDE 2018 Please note that there is strictly no overnight CAmPing at Warren Heath. Any competitor or member of a competitor s entourage found to be camping in the forest will be disqualified. FRee event camping is available at the White Lion Antiques Centre, RG27 8AE, from 1400 on Saturday afternoon. On arrival, you must park where instructed by the officials. Directions to the White Lion Antiques Centre, RG27 8AE, from the Start Area: Turn Right out of the forest and continue to the roundabout; Turn right at the roundabout onto the A30; Continue on the A30 for 1 mile down Star Hill; At the bottom of Star Hill, you will see the White Lion Antiques Centre, a large white building on the right hand side. Turn right into Hares Lane; The Camping facility is immediately on your left in the hard-standing car park and adjoining field; Please be respectful to our hosts and neighbours at this facility and do not run generators after 8pm. Any competitor, or member of a competitor s entourage, found to be disruptive at this facility will be liable to disqualification. 5 ISDE 2017 Brive-la-Gaillarde, France From 28th August to 2nd September 2017, the international Six Day enduro was held in Brive-la-gaillarde, France. Drawing on their rich history of ISDE success, Witley and District Motor Cycle Club sent a team of three riders Paul Armstrong, Ross Kerr and Aaron Smith under experienced team manager Neil Bowker. The 2017 ISDE started in sweltering heat of 39 C, with riders expected to complete nearly eight hours on day one and two of a 300km course. Paul and Ross rode hard and tried to stay hydrated, losing minimal time but finishing within the half-hour allowance. Unfortunately, Aaron had mechanical issues and lost engine oil. Shaun and Rob worked hard to recover him and the bike to secure a restart for day two. Once all riders had got back to the paddock, the day turned as news broke of British rider, Michael Alty, sadly passing away on the side of the track. Day two started in a sombre mood with all British riders wearing black armbands as a mark of respect. All Witley riders came home safe and sound in another hot day. Day three brought a new course and tests, much appreciated by the riders who welcomed a change from the same bumps! All three Witley riders came home safe. Aaron and Paul were clean on time. Ross Kerr was flying round the tests but unfortunately dropped a minute on the going due to a severe rainstorm and taking the sensible decision not to go mad on the road. Paul and Ross both did a front tyre in the work time. Aaron repaired a completely collapsed rear wheel bearing. Day four brought a new course again and all Witley riders rode well, clean on time, changing rear tyres in the work time. Day five started well for the Witley riders, using the same course as day four, but unfortunately Ross got a thorn in his eye on the first check. Riding through the pain for most of the day and in the torrential rain which turned the going into a slippery mess, Ross came home just a little over time showing real strength of character. Aaron and Paul came home safe and on time. Day six brought the final motocross. Ross Kerr rode well in the third moto of the morning, coming 13th in a 38-bike line up and securing a Bronze Medal from the week. Aaron and Paul were in the same C3 race on their 300 Husqvarnas. Aaron stole the holeshot in the final moto, being passed by just two riders in the race. Paul came home a very respectable midpack position to complete his week and achieve his Bronze Medal. our thanks to our support crew, the ACU, team gb, godalming Carpets & Flooring, endurotyres and Purple mustard. Why Challengers is important Alison Mould, a Challengers parent, explains what Challengers has meant to her family: Autism rob you of a normal family life. We feel like we live on another planet and don t even speak the same language as other people any more. I have at times struggled to hold my family unit, my sanity and my health together. What bs has been our lifeline throughout all these years has been Challengers. t e Challengers have often gone the extra mile so very often lacking from other organisations. When Charlie was eight, he went through a very diffiicult and aggre essive stage, hitting and pushing anyone who went near him. We got banned from everywhere and we weree almost housebound. I can remember being so sad, lonely and desperate. I was taking Charlie to play parks in the early hours of the morning, or late at night, in the dark and when it rained, so that he could let offf steam and get out of the house. We weree desperate for some kind of support. And that s when Challengers stepped in they weree the only people who helped. Without Challengers and their dedicated team, Charlie would not have had access to the outside world, to participate in all these wonderful activities and grow in confidence. 17 WITLEY & DISTRICT MCC ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Way back in 1921 a small band of motorcycle enthusiasts used to gather in the yard of Mullards the Builders in Witley. Without doubt, the friendship, the conversation and banter would have been much the same as when motorcyclists get together today. Numbers slowly increased and a club was formed. By now, many wanted to take part in the Trials and Hill Climbs which were Witley members at the 1949 Selborne Solo Trial becoming very popular at the time, so the decision was made in 1924 to affiliate to the Auto Cycle Union, and be officially recognised as a Motorcycle Club. As the number of clubs affiliated to the ACU grew, it was decided to break them down into regions, each region forming itself into a Centre. The region consisting of Kent, Surrey and Sussex, together with the southern half of London, became the South East Centre and has remained so until this day. It was in 1926 that the Witley Club became affiliated to the ACU South East Centre. Witley MCC has always played a major role, not only in our contribution to the management of the Centre, especially in the early days, but also in the quality of the events we have run and the competitors we have produced.
