Page 15 Page 43 Page 65 Page 91 A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. 6 2004 OUTLOOK Coastal Carolina Football 6 In its inaugural season, the Coastal Carolina University football program experienced more success than most anticipated, including a winning overall record and a victory in Big South Conference play. Head Coach David Bennett believes that while it was something to be proud of, it is also something to be put behind them as they approach the 2004 campaign. We had set out a goal that we didn t really talk about as a team, and that was to have a winning record in the inaugural season, Bennett said. We re proud of having a winning record, but we certainly want to improve on that. Just like in anything you do, you want to continue to get better. I m just glad that word inaugural will be gone this year, and we can just get out there like any other team. The 2003 squad was one that improved throughout the season, as the team continued to mature. The offense had a solid running game from the outset and eventually put together the passing game to compliment it. The defense ranked second in the Big South overall, while the special teams had its moments, including a pair of touchdowns at Davidson. However, Bennett looks to the additional maturity and experience of the past season to help the squad improve in I hope we ll be a little bit more consistent in all phases of the game this year, the third-year head coach said. I think we ve got to mature mentally, and then we will get better in all phases of the game. Offense, defense and special teams -- we ve just got to become a more consistent team. You ll notice last year at Liberty, we were up 14-7 at the half and we had VMI down 10-0 at one time. We stopped Gardner- Webb on their first drive on fourth down, and then we completed a pass, but we fumbled it, gave it right back to them, one of three big plays to go their way. We just have to become better at playing every play for all four quarters, and that just comes with experience, Senior Center Nick Johnson maturity and continuing to add quality players to the program. Not only does experience contribute to the maturity of a team, but so does depth at each position, something that Coastal did not have a lot of last year with only two recruiting classes on the field for the inaugural season. With the addition of the 2004 group, the Chanticleers add another set of players that have the talent to go with a group that gained valuable experience last year. When you get older and more mature and have more depth, you don t get as fatigued, as you can substitute more players, Bennett stated. We had to leave a lot of the starters in there that weren t ready to play the full 60 minutes. Adding depth with this third class will certainly help us, and then in 2005, we ll have the fourth class of players. I guess it s more difficult for us, because we re playing teams that have fifth-year seniors, seniors, and juniors that are playing, and we re playing young guys. Again finding the positive, it will help us down the road. There are some veterans and starters that are going to get beat out this year, Bennett continued. We started a lot of freshman, but, if you re coming in as a freshman, is it harder to beat out a freshman, or is it harder to beat out a junior or senior? It s gonna be harder to beat out that junior or senior that s had years of training, learning and experience. So these freshmen that we re bringing in in this third class will have a greater chance to play right away than if they were going to a school with a bunch of seniors, juniors and sophomores. Now Coastal is starting to develop depth, as the Chanticleers are now around three-quarters of the scholarship maximum for I-AA. With that depth comes more players battling for playing time, something that Bennett welcomes at every practice, especially heading into preseason camp this August. The best source of motivation is not what we say as coaches, but it s competition, Bennett stated. So when our guys come to practice this fall, they ll say, Oh my gosh, who s that guy? Who s that guy? Now, that player is competing for the spot that the returner might have had. It doesn t guarantee he s gonna have it this year, so that competition will be very important. We think in this incoming class of freshmen that we ll have a lot of guys that can help us, Bennett continued. We certainly hope out of this class of freshmen that we ve got quite a few impact guys. Again, we ll have to see how they can handle it three ways: mentally, physically, and spiritually. You ve gotta be able to handle all three phases of it. With that in mind, let s take a look at the 2004 Chanticleers, position-byposition. OFFENSE Offensively, we had a pretty good running game last year, Bennett said. This year, we want to throw the ball a little better. It took us a while to throw a touchdown pass, but then in the last three games, we threw five touchdown passes. If we can become better at that, it will only help the running game as it takes some of the pressure off that area. QUARTERBACK The quarterback position could be one of the most hotly-contested positions on the field this fall. CCU returns two quarterbacks with starting experience last year in sophomores Tyler Thigpen and Ren McKinnon. Thigpen started nine of the 10 contests he played in, recording five touchdown passes and three on the ground. McKinnon got a pair of starts as a true freshman and showed his abilities with four rushing touchdowns. Throw into the mix junior transfer Deric Mills, freshman signee Will Richardson and the possibility of senior Scott Crouch returning, and the quarterback position will be a battle to see who starts the opener at Morehead State Sept. 4. Much of that battle could be determined on who can make the passing game work this year, with the incumbents holding a slight edge heading into camp. The passing game definitely takes longer to develop, Bennett continued. Again, nothing takes the place of experience. With Tyler Thigpen being our starting quarterback, there was a young man that did not play starting quarterback his senior year of high school because his coach asked him to. He then went through a year of just practicing at quarterback when he got here. So technically, he went through two 2004 KEY DATES years of non-competitive action at quarterback. So I think as the Thu., Aug Report for Practice T-F, July Big South FB Media Days season progressed, he F-S, Aug. 6-7 Practice-Helmets Only did a wonderful job, S-M, Aug. 7-8 Practice-Pads & Helmets and we expect him to Tue., Aug. 9 Practice-Full Pads continue to get better. 7 2004 OUTLOOK in Will Richardson that s gotten a lot of press. We ll see how well Will and Deric can learn our offense and how quickly they can progress, but there ll be great competition at that position. RUNNING BACKS The running backs were the core of the offensive output for Coastal last season. CCU scored 34 of its 39 offensive touchdowns on the ground. However, the Chanticleers showed some diversity, as five different backs were in the scoring column and CCU was the only team in the league and one of just six in the nation to have two different rushers rush for more than 200 yards in a single game. Sophomore Aundres Perkins, a Second Team All-Big South honoree, led the conference in scoring with 14 touchdowns and 84 points and ranked third in the league in rushing with 863 yards in nine Sophomore Running Back Aundres Perkins games. Perkins set the school record with a 202-yard rushing performance at North Greenville. Junior Patrick Hall nearly eclipsed that mark with 201 yards in a win at Davidson later in the year and will battle Perkins for playing time. Several other returners, including sophomore Jermaine Harrington and newcomers like true freshman Jamie Fordham could also figure into the mix. The fullback position will be determined during fall practices. Sophomore Ben Hampton returned from a preseason ankle injury to play in 10 games for CCU last year and is the leader heading into practice. Hampton averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season, including one touchdown. However, there will be challenges from true freshman Mike Tolbert and other players for the starting role. WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS The wide receiver corps grew throughout the season and started to show some of its ability late, scoring four touchdowns in the last two games. Sophomore Rodney Burgess led this group in 2003 in catches and yards, including being the first Chanticleer to have a 100-yard receiving game. Sophomores Darnell Williams and Chris Noble also recorded double-digit catches last season and will be looked upon again to contribute, along with several other returners who will work to earn playing time. Sophomore Perry Parks returns from a season-ending knee injury in the second game and three of the 2004 recruiting class join this group. Jerome Simpson was the Most Valuable Player in both the North Carolina State football and basketball championships, demonstrating his athletic talent. C.J. Rhinehart was highly recruited after posting over 1,000 yards receiving his senior year, and local product Jon Greene makes the shift back to wide receiver after playing last season at quarterback. This is a group that could see significant changes and make a greater impact on CCU s ability to move the ball in Senior Brandon Jeffcoat returns as the starting tight end for CCU after playing all 11 games last year. Notable for catching the first-ever touchdown pass in school history, he will be a mainstay in the offense, as he has the ability to both catch the ball and also be effective in blocking. Two other letterwinners, sophomores Justin Landrum and Willie Barnes, join Jeffcoat in making this one of the deeper positions on Coastal s roster. OFFENSIVE LINE The men up front make the difference for any football team, and CCU returns all five starters and 11 letterwinners from an offensive line that led a Coastal running attack that ranked second in the league in yardage. Second Team All-Big South selections senior Nick Johnson and junior Antwon Trice anchor the front line at the center and left tackle positions, respectively. These two, along with junior Les Rice at left guard and sophomores Brian Kepple at right guard and Brad Poston at right tackle, were the starting line in nine of the 11 games, a group that also allowed the fewest sacks in the Big South Conference. Several other returning linemen look to compete for starting roles in 2004, including junior Robbie Wright and sophomores Chadd Toothman, Franky Tolbert, Parez Riley, Will Durrett and Troy Biddy. Add to that mix four redshirts and a member of the 2004 signing class, and the offensive line hopes to build on last year s success. DEFENSE Last year s defense made some noise in the Big South Conference and nationally, despite its youth. Coastal led the league in takeaways and ranked second in rushing defense, pass defense and total defense, while finishing eighth in the nation in turnover margin at just over a turnover per game. The defense looks to get even better next year, as Bennett believes they have the talent and leadership to accomplish their goals. On defense, the young men did a great job last year, Bennett said That starts with our defensive coordinator, Coach Walker and his defensive staff. All those guys work together to formulate the plan each week, and then get our defense ready for what they expect to happen. There are going to be things that happen unexpectedly, but the staff does a wonderful job, preparing them very well and making adjustments on game day. They take pride in it, setting daily goals to achieve in practice, like trying to create turnovers. They re constantly thinking of ways to get better, and we were proud of what they did last year. We d love to get to where we never give up more points than in the 20s, and then you ve got a chance to win every football game. I think we re just progressing along, and with bringing in more players and more depth to execute our plan, we should continue to get better in that phase of the game. DEFENSIVE LINE Sophomore Defensive End Adrain Grady The defensive front of Coastal returns five regulars to the lineup, led by Second Team All-Big South defensive end Adrain Grady. The sophomore led the Big South Conference with eight sacks on the year and will again be a force on the outside. Sophomore Sam Harper enters the fall as the top nose tackle, while sophomore Kenneth Chambers returns at the other defensive end slot. Sophomores Dameon Hopkins, Tony Williams and Will Durrett also return with solid experience from 2003 and could see significant action in the rotation, along with several newcomers, this season. LINEBACKERS Coastal s linebacking corps proved to be among the best in the Big South Conference, as the group returns four starters and seven letterwinners from last year s team. Anchoring the squad is junior Maurice Simpkins. A First Team All-Big South pick, the outside linebacker led CCU and ranked fourth in the league with 103 tackles. Sophomore Ryan Lowery returns as the starter at the other 7

8 2004 OUTLOOK Coastal Carolina Football 8 outside linebacker slot, but both will face competition for playing time from junior James Brochu and sophomore Keith Cox. The inside linebackers contributed to a Coastal squad that ranked second in the three major defensive categories. Sophomore Jamar Leath returns as a starter at inside linebacker after finishing seventh in the Big South in tackles in Shon Shuler, another junior, is slated to start at the other inside linebacker, but will have a challege from sophomore Shaun Gaines, who is returning from a knee injury suffered last season. Sophomore Anthony Featherstone, along with several returners and newcomers, will also try to make their mark this year. DEFENSIVE BACKS The defensive backs had an impact on 2003, and look to make an even larger mark in As a group, Coastal led the Big South conference with 17 interceptions, as 10 different players, including seven defensive backs, had picks last season. Junior Greg Williamson earned Second Team All-Big South accolades for his play at cornerback last year. Sophomore Rashiek Buchanan returns as a starter at the other corner after leading CCU with three interceptions in Sophomores Sergio Geiger and Taylor McFadden could see extensive playing time, along with freshman Kenneth Joshen, who Junior linebacker Maurice Simpkins returns from an injury last season. CCU returns four safeties that all saw playing time in at least nine games each last year. Junior Brandon Carr and sophomore Travis Cain return as the preseason starters, but junior Quinton Teal and sophomore Dewitt Myers could find their way up the depth chart during the season. SPECIAL TEAMS The special teams are the guys who normally don t see much of the spotlight, but who can make the difference between a win and a loss. Last year, that happened on several occasions, as special teams play was a difference in wins at North Greenville and Davidson. Coastal brings back the key elements in this area as well. Greg Williamson also was a First Team All-Big South honoree as a return specialist after leading the league with more than 20 yards per punt return. Sophomore Josh Hoke handled the place kicking, kick off and punting duties last year, but the Chants will look for help to lessen that load, possibly from sophomore Rob Williams, redshirt freshman Jon Slatten or true freshman James Pallassino. Josh can kick and punt, but I don t know if Josh will do everything or if he ll just do one, as we have to see who s the best at each thing, Bennett said. I think we may have put a little bit too much pressure on Josh last year to kick and punt, so we are going to look this year to see which one he does best and can most help our team. Those guys work hard day in and day out, and they re a very important part of our football team, Bennett continued. I look at it this way -- the guy that can kick off best will kick off, the guy that can kick the extra point and short field goals best will do that, and so on, so we have the potential for a lot of guys to contribute. Special teams get ready for kickoff coverage. The snapping duties should be as reliable as it was last year, as the pair were consistently solid. Sophomore Zack St. Clair handled the long snapping duties last year for Coastal, while sophomore Jonathan Wilhoit was the snapper for field goals and extra points. The snappers are guys that don t ever get any credit, Bennett stated. Jonathan and Zack do a great job of snapping that ball. It all starts right there. If there s not a good snap, it could be a disaster SCHEDULE To have seven home games in any football season is normally a privilege reserved for only the elite teams at the I-A or I-AA levels. In just its second year, Coastal will be one of those teams in 2004, as the Chanticleers will welcome six new teams to Brooks Stadium for action this year, along with Charleston (WV) who makes a return trip to Conway. Bennett knows that this is something that could be beneficial to the Chants, even if they didn t have a winning mark at home last year. It s pretty nice to have that many games at home this season, Bennett stated. That s as many games as a proven I-A school usually has. So we re happy for our university, community, fans and season ticket holders that we have that many home games this year and just hope they ll come out again like they did. We promise we ll go hard. We don t give enough credit to the atmosphere we have here at home, and that credit needs to go to our season ticket holders, alumni, students, the fans and all the people in this area, Bennett continued. They did their part, coming to the games and creating a great environment. When we went on the road to different places, our kids saw how fortunate and blessed we are to have the stadium, the environment and the support we have. We just want to get more consistent to show our fans how much we appreciate their loyalty by winning more home games this year. All the teams will be familiar to the Coastal, as all 11 teams were on CCU s inaugural schedule in However, while they will be familiar, there will still be plenty of motivation for Bennett to rely on, as he prepares the Chants week in and week out. There are five of them that got us last year, and I remember those five a lot better than I remember the six that we won, Bennett said. I don t know what the reason is, but I always remember the teams that beat us. I don t remember the victories that much. When you work hard and compete and win, that s what you re supposed to do, but when you lose you don t feel good, because you wonder what could we have done better to win? And so I remember those five a lot more vividly than I remember the ones that we beat. No matter what happens throughout the season, the focus will always be on the games in the Big South Conference. Gardner-Webb returns as the two-time defending champion, while Liberty, VMI and Charleston Southern also will try to challenge for the title. Bennett believes this is a team that could be in the mix, but it will take some growth in just the program s second year of play. Our team motto last year was Believe, Bennett concluded. Well, it s one thing to say Believe, but before you can do anything you ve have to truly believe you can do it. I think a football team has to develop the mentality that we re here to win and we believe we can win. Last year against Liberty, Gardner-Webb and VMI, we said we were going to win, but did we truly believe it? This year as a staff and a team, we have to truly believe that we can win to have the chance to compete for the Big South title, which is the ultimate goal.
