Honors program to be a dnner affar The NCAA Conventon honors program wlt be scheduled as a dnner event Monday, January 8, durng the 84th annual meetng n DallX. The program was changed to accommodate the schedule of former Presdent Ronald Reagan, who s ths year s Teddy award recpent. Detegatc luncheons wlt be offered Monday (January 8) and Tuesday (January 9) from noon to I I5 p.m. for the convenence of delegates. The Admnstratve Commttee, takng note of the locaton of the Loews Anatole and the dffculty n fndng a range of luncheon alternatves, decded to provde two luncheons for delegates. As a result of the change n the honors program to a dnner and the addtonal two luncheons, the regs- traton fee has been ncreased from $50 to $70 because of the greater costs to the Assocaton. There also wll be some mnor adjustments n the tme allotted for the dvson busness sessons January 8, as well as schedulng of the Men s and Women s Commttees on Commttees meetngs that day. The general busness sesson s scheduled Tuesday,.January 9, and Wednesday, January 10, wth adjournment planned for I p.m. Wednesday. Hotel reservaton forms and a composte meetng schedule wll be maled to member nsttutons at the end of October. A full Convcnton meetng schedule wlt appear n the October 30 ssue of the News. We arc n the process of collectng nformaton on the study s last two groups of frst-year studentathletes those who began ther freshman year n 1987 and 1988 so we soon wll be able to make some comparsons among all freshman classes from 1984 to Changes after 86 Most mportantly, the data wll reveal how the preparaton, performance and demography of freshman student-athletes changed after 1986, the year Bylaw 14.3 (commonly called Proposton 48) went nto effect. The Commsson has proposed that the partal-qualfer category be retaned and that such ndvduals be allowed to receve need-based, nonathletcally related fnancal ad avalable to all other students. The Councl n August favored rlmnatng fnancal ad from consderaton n the Bylaw 14.3 provsons, thus allowng all nonqualfers, ncludng the current partal-qualfer category, to receve nonathletcally related fnancal ad wth certtcaton that t was awarded wthout rcga;d to athletcs ablty.
