3 Catawba College Basketball Guide MEMO TO THE MEDIA MEDIA SERVICES: Complete statistics and play-by-play as well as halftime statistics will be furnished to the media. If requested, game statistics will be sent via FAX machine to your media outlet. A phone will also be available for use upon request. Coach Morton will be available for post-game comments approximately 10 minutes after the contest in Room 109 of the Physical Education Center. No interviews will be allowed in the locker room, but players will be retrieved by the sports information office as needed. Refresh ments will be provided in the Catawba College Chiefs Room located in the Abernethy P.E. Center. MEDIA CREDENTIALS: Passes for the working press can be obtained from the Sports Information Office and will be left at the will call window. No passes will be mailed. Passes for parking are not necessary, as there is ample free parking near Goodman Gym. Spaces are provided at courtside for the working press. Photographers are also permitted at courtside. VISITING RADIO NETWORKS: Radio crews covering the visiting teams should request permission to broadcast and credentials from the Catawba College Sports Information Office. A telephone line is available and the visiting radio station must pay for all long-distance calls. 10 Angie Morton - Head Coach Angie Morton begins her tenth season at the helm of the Catawba College women s basketball program. Catawba has compiled a mark in her previous seasons. Last year, Morton was named SAC Coach of the Year after guiding Catawba to a runner-up league finish. In her first season, she led Catawba to a 22-9 record and to both the South Atlantic conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Lady Indians also qualified for the NCAA II Regional. Morton, a 1984 Catawba graduate, returned to her alma mater after serving as head coach at Pfeiffer University for seven seasons where she compiled a record. During her seven years at Pfeiffer, Morton guided the Lady Falcons to a pair of Carolinas-Virginia Conference titles and the school s first NCAA II playoff berth in The back-toback 20 win campaigns, including a 24-5 mark in , earned Morton consecutive CVAC Coach of the Year honors. Morton was also a CVAC Coach of the Year in softball in 2000 as she led Pfeiffer to the league crown. Prior to her stint at Pfeiffer, Morton was the girls head coach at West Stanly High School for eight years. She guided the school to playoff appearances in all eight seasons and was RRC Coach of the Year in She also served as coach at Locust Elementary School and Knox Middle School. G r a d u a t i n g from Catawba in 1984, Morton earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. At Catawba as Angie Crayton, she earned 10 letters, playing basketball, softball and field hockey. In basketball, Morton played in 86 games and averaged 5.5 points, netting a career high 26 in a loss to Wingate as a senior. She added 163 rebounds and 107 assists. Morton was a.367 career hitter in softball with nine home runs and 74 RBI. Morton resides in Albemarle with her husband, Randy. They have four children, Matt, Keri, Krista and Tad. Assistant Coaches RICKY JOINES Assistant Coach Ricky Joines is in his fourteenth season as an assistant with the Catawba women s basketball team. He is a 2002 Catawba graduate with a degree in physical education and recreation. He also serves as an assistant to the Athletic Director at Catawba and is assistant director of the Cat-U Basketball Camps. Joines came to Catawba after serving as head coach of the junior varsity girls basketball team at West Wilkes High School. During those three years he also assisted with the girls varsity program. In , he assisted with the boys varsity team that won the Northwest 2A Conference title. Joines earned an associate arts degree in 1996 at Wilkes Community College where he played basketball for two seasons. He resides in Salisbury. DORTHELL LITTLE Assistant Coach Dorthell Little begins her tenth season as an assistant coach with the Catawba women s basketball program. She is a 2003 graduate of Catawba, earning a bachelor of science degree in business. Little played three seasons with the Lady Indians after transferring from Armstrong Atlantic. She was a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection and earned all-region honors as a junior. Little ranks third all-time with 95 blocked shots and fourth with 223 steals. Over her four collegiate seasons, Little scored 1,132 points with 948 coming in three years at Catawba. She ranks ninth all-time at Catawba with 677 rebounds. Her career shooting percentage of 57% is second best all-time. Little was a standout at Richmond Senior High School, helping the Raiders to three conference titles. She resides in Salisbury
11 Abernethy Physical Education Center The Julius W. Abernethy Physical Education Center, home of Catawba s basketball teams, is one of the finest on-campus athletic facilities in the state of North Carolina. It was named after the late Julius W. Abernethy of Newton, N.C., and was dedicated on September 26, Basketball games are played in the center s Goodman Gymnasium, named in honor of Enoch A. Goodman of Salisbury. The Lady Indians are (73.5%) at home since beginning SAC competition in In October of 2002, the floor was named in honor of former men s basketball coach, Sam Moir. The building, which cost more than $1.8 million to build, has a seating capacity of 3,500 for basketball, and now has a value of about $5 million. A beautiful maple hardwood playing surface was installed in December The facility is also used extensively for intercollegiate volleyball, student activities, civic events, concerts and various athletic camps during the summer months. The College s Athletic and Physical Education offices, as well as classrooms, are located on the upper level. Situated on the lower level is the Allen S. Johnson Jr. Swimming Pool, three racquetball courts, the Meyer Auxiliary Gym complete with an indoor batting cage, various student and athletic dressing accommodations, and the Lofland Strength Training Center. Athletic Training LESLIE DENT Athletic Trainer Leslie Dent is in her second year as Assistant Athletic Trainer at Catawba College. In addition to her medical coverage for the men s and women s basketball teams, she also oversees coverage for the cross country, swimming, tennis and golf teams, which includes both home and away practice and game coverage. Dent received her Master of Arts, Exercise, Leisure and Sport with a concentration in athletic training from Kent State University this past May. While at Kent State, Dent worked with the football, softball and women s basketball squads. Dent earned a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from East Carolina University in She worked with numerous sports at ECU, including football, softball, women s basketball and women s soccer. She has also helped staff regional basketball tournaments for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association
