September President's Report I m sure all the parents can agree with my sigh of relief that the year s netball season has come to a close. The early morning Curl Curl starts and sometimes late night trainings in the cold are difficult, but they are definitely worth it. I d like to start off by thanking the most important people involved in Wakehurst Netball Club: the girls themselves. I hope you have had the most enjoyable year playing for Wakehurst, and continue to do so in the future. It doesn t matter whether you don t win a game or win a Grand Final it s how you play and grow throughout the season. Sometimes it s a win in a quarter or that first goal you shoot or play a position you have never played before. Success can sometimes be measured by the smile on your faces or your coach s when you do a move that you practiced at training. As we all know our club is here to serve one purpose and that is to allow our girls the opportunity to be involved in a sport, have fun, keep fit and make life-long friends. It is only with the time freely and selflessly given, despite their busy lives and schedules, by those running this operation that allows the club to exist. I sincerely thank and a thousands thankyous are never enough for the Wakehurst committee Sam Dyer, Cathie Richardson, Julian Humphrey, Kerrie Rigby, Lisa D Urso, Karen Hayes, Jenny Domjen, Nicole Hayward, Kym Stacey and Tasha Smithies. Thank you very much for the effort you have put into providing the best experience possible not only for the girls, but for all of us, and for spreading your enthusiasm for this sport amongst the community. Thank you also to the lovely ladies who attended our meetings your contributions are greatly appreciated. I would like to extend a warm invitation to any parents who wish to become more involved, or have an opinion on a certain aspect of the club, to join our committee or attend our monthly meetings. Anyone is welcome to participate in these meetings and we are more than willing to hear any issues, qualms or ideas you may have within a friendly, face-to-face environment. Just as important as the committee are the wonderful people who give up their time to coach or manage a team. Wakehurst cannot run without the amazing efforts of those willing to tackle the often tough job of coaching, managing or mentoring the girls, for the first time or for numerous years. We know that sometimes you are talked into it and I can speak for the entire club and its members when I say your contributions are immensely appreciated, so thank you. This year we had 47 registered teams 8 Seniors, 29 Juniors and nettas teams which amounts to close to 400 players. As you can appreciate it is a huge task to register, grade, organise, find coaches and managers, get kits, organise training and everything else that goes with it. We do our very best every year to try and get it right. Sometimes we do get it right and sometimes we don t but we always give it our best effort and intentions. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 1
Of 37 junior and senior teams we had 23 made it to the finals series. Of these teams 10 teams made it to the grand final 6 of which were winners, 6 played the final and 7 played semi finals. Congratulations to all these teams. It was excellent to see so many Wakehurst uniforms at Curl Curl. During the year we have been busy. This year we introduced some coaching sessions for our juniors and coaches. We were lucky to have Margaret Finlay hold a coaching workshop. As always Margaret is willing to give up her valuable time to give our coaches some helpful hints and tips for training and playing. Margaret also volunteered to hold a defensive workshop for our juniors. It was absolutely wonderful to see the smiles on the girl s faces as Margaret ran them through their paces. With their coaches watching on hopefully all involved gained some useful tips and hints on how to defend and hold your space on the court. So a very big thankyou to Margaret whose enthusiasm is boundless and contagious. Equally fortunate were we in having Kim Archer volunteer to hold our Midcourt workshop. Kim is a wonderful experienced coach and her advice to the girls and the coaches was fantastic. It was great to see the coaches with note books in hand watching on nodding their heads as Kim gave her words of wisdom and the girls trying out new moves and training exercises. Kim s enthusiasm and constant encouragement was passed onto the girls as they listened and tried all the drills she recommended. Thank you Kim. Unfortunately we were unable to hold our Shooting workshop with Anne Sargeant as the wet weather always seemed to intervene. Hopefully next year we can run these workshops again. As many of you know, Net-Set-Go is a pre-coaching program where the aged girls can develop and refine their coaching skills. This program is also very successfully used as an introduction to netball for 5 to 7 year olds, encouraging 50 number girls this year to participate in this wonderful sport. This year Nicole Delamonte Carter kindly offered her services to run the program. Thankyou to Lisa D Urso for helping organise and Emelia D Urso for running the program. I would also like to thank our young volunteers involved Chloe Bradstreet, Maya Bohr, Aimee Carter, Emma Connolly, Rachel Dunn, Olivia Kabalan, Talia Limnios, Nicola D Urso, Holly Palmer, Georgia Gemmell, Holly Gemmell, Tiarna McCombe and Rachelle Mann. This year the weather was kind and last Friday was our last day. Thank you to you all. Wakehurst Netball Club nominated Emilie Rigby for a Belrose Rotary Youth Award. We are very proud that she was successful and she received her award in a ceremony earlier this year. Congratulations Emilie. As you may or may not know all girls need to learn to umpire and will umpire from the age of 12. Each team has responsibilities to supply umpires throughout the year. Nicole Hayward our umpiring convenor with the help from Sam Dyer organised coaching sessions for 12 and 13 year olds. These 3 sessions are invaluable to help our girls learn how to umpire and importantly how to enjoy umpiring. Nicole is a B Badged umpire and could be seen down the courts from early morning to late in the day either umpiring, playing or mentoring the young umpires. A huge thankyou to Nicole for all her time and effort - I truly believe she has the hardest job. Congratulations to Olivia Kabalan for receiving her C Grade badge this year. Congratulations also to Jessica and Emilie Rigby for selected to be part of the Manly Umpires Program. It is an awesome achievement. A big thankyou to all our umpires who blow their whistles and umpired the best they can every week including the finals series. You are all a credit to the club. PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 2
This year Manly Netball have submitted 2 teams in Netball New South Wales Premier League called The Sapphires. These teams are Opens and Under 20 s. Wakehurst is proud to acknowledge that Wakehurst players have been selected for the Opens teams Lauren Cantwell, Eliza Long and Mikah Van Gogh. Coaching these wonderful girls is Jen Wright formally Huggett who is a former player and coach of Wakehurst. I am not sure when this competition starts but I assure you that it will be a great competition and well worth going to watch. We will keep you informed. Eliza Long is also the coach for the Manly 15 years State League coach. She is a busy lady. Congratulations as to Karen Hayes for her representative selection for Manly. Karen is the manager for the 17 years State League Team and 13 years State Age Squad. This year we have finally handed over our old uniforms. Michelle from Wakehurst Rugby Club will be taking many of our old uniforms, bibs and balls to Fiji on their football trip in a few weeks time. It is fantastic that we are able to help out communities that they will be visiting and giving the girls a treat. Hopefully we will get some photos and who knows we may see a Fijian girl playing in the ANZ championship or representing Fiji who started off with an aqua blue netball dress from Wakehurst. Thank you to Michelle and we hope you have a great trip. During the year we decided to try a few newsletters throughout the season. Thankyou to Sam Dyer you put a lot of time and effort into creating these. Along with the start of the season information, age group information, mid season newsletter, after today there will be an end of season newsletter with coach s reports and information from today including all the awards. We hope these have been useful to you. Manly Warringah Netball Club introduced a perpetual trophy which was donated by the family of Joan Alderton. This trophy called the Presidents Award was presented to the winners of the A Grade competition. It is with great pleasure to announce that the inaugural winners of this award are the Wakehurst A Grade team coached by Kellie Crookwell. Thank you to Kellie and Mikah Van Gogh for presenting the club this wonderful trophy and congratulations on an outstanding year. Congratulations to every player in the club. It is great to see our distinctive aqua and white uniform every Saturday morning throughout the season. You all play your best and with great sportsmanship. Thank you for making this club as vibrant and successful as it is. To all the family, friends and supporters thank you for being encouraging to our teams and respectful to the opposition. It s great to hear come on Wakehurst or let s go Wakehurst ringing throughout Curl Curl. Hopefully you have all had a great season no matter what the result. We look forward to seeing you next year. We will notify on Facebook, website and through the school s newsletters. So keep an eye out. Thankyou. Chris Osinga PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 3

The first few weeks were spent introducing the new girls to the rules and skills, and familiarising the experienced girls after the break in seasons. Started to see lots of improvement as the season went along, with definite skill sets/strengths appearing in the girls. They have put in a lot of effort training, worked well as a team, played consistently in the games and have been a pleasure to coach along the way. Wakehurst 35 (10E) For their first season of competitive netball the girls have turned up and played their hearts out. Dropping down to 7 players near the beginning of the season was a challenge which every girl rose to knowing when they turned up they had to play a full game. We have had some close games which unfortunately didn t go our way, you could see the improvement from game to game and the draw in the last game of the season was like a victory. The girls never stopped trying, never stopped smiling and just enjoyed being out on the court. The team all improved so much over the season, supported each other and had lots of fun. I hope they all want to keep playing for years to come. Thanks to the Parents for turning up, supporting and encouraging the girls. Wakehurst 34 (10C) This team has overcome several setbacks throughout the season to blitz our way to the Finals. The initial line up heading into the season had only 7 players listed but thankfully we bumped this up to 8 players. Our team has endured several injuries, not only of the players, but the coach too!! From broken shoulder blades, to fractured wrists, sprained ankles and inflamed knees, our team has not only persevered but surpassed all expectations. We rolled through the season with 7 wins and 5 losses. We sat on fifth position on the ladder most of the way through the season, and with a surprise to all of us, somehow bumped our way through into 2 nd position on the ladder at the end of the 14 rounds. All the girls have improved dramatically in fitness, speed and skill, but most importantly they have developed strong friendships and real sportsmanship. They may not have made it through to the Grand Finals but they were absolute superstars throughout the season! PO Box 418 Belrose West Page 5
Wakehurst 32 (11G) Wakehurst 32 had a very successful season this year. We proved ourselves once again by reaching the semi-finals for the second year in a row. Our players have managed to connect and really become a team this year. They have all improved so much and have shown the potential to be great netballers in the future. Our shooters went above and beyond and helped us win so many of our games. Our relentless mid-court players always kept the ball moving and brought great speed to our games. We could always trust and rely on our defence to pick us up and put us back in the right direction when we needed it. Wakehurst 32 had a great season of 2015 and the girls couldn t have made their coaches any prouder. Wakehurst Team 26 (12F) The U12F team had a fantastic season despite a number of challenges. We started the season slowly with a couple of wins and losses, but then slowly as the confidence of the girls grew we started to knock of the top teams, and at one point we even got to second on the ladder! During the school holidays, we overcame a number of challenges with many girls overseas, many times calling on fill in players, and one of our girls leaving the team to move to Texas! Despite all these challenges, the girls made the finals in 4 th position. What a team, they won their first semi-final by 1 POINT!! We came up against Narrabeen Youth Club in the 2 nd semi-final and they were too good. Our team was the smallest in the competition in stature, but showed great heart and determination to finish the comp in 3 rd position!!! Thanks to all the parents, kids and numerous fill ins who helped us out. The best result the girls have ever achieved! Wakehurst Team 19 (14E) I was blessed with a great team who from the start were willing to work hard in order to get results. They listened to advice and gave their all every game. It was a rocky start, and for the majority of the season we were sitting around the bottom half of the ladder. However after hard work and effort at training the team started to gel and before we knew it the team was third on the ladder. This team have only good things to look forward to and no doubt their journey into the Semi's will be one to cherish and learn from. It's been an absolute pleasure coaching this team. Wakehurst Team 15 (15D) The 15D's had a very successful year finishing top of the ladder. An already slick team, the focus was to improve on skills and strategies for the game. They did this successfully implementing various strategies to help them become a more cohesive team. I have no doubt they will have a great final series and will give it their absolute all.
