2 INSIDE THE MATCHUP } } AT A GLANCE } } } The Tennessee State/Middle Tennessee series began on Dec. 7, 1973 when TSU defeated the Blue Raiders, 63-59, at the Vanderbilt Invitational Tournament at Memorial Gymnasium. } MTSU has won the last 10 meetings between the two sides. } TSU and MTSU are playing for the seventh season in a row. } The Tigers are looking for their first road win in the series since Jan. 19, } Saturday will mark the Tigers first of five regular season games versus NCAA Tournament teams (MTSU, Duke, Austin Peay (2x), Vanderbilt) TENNESSEE STATE NEWS AND NOTES } } TSU UPDATE } Tennessee State is 3-0 for the first time since the season after wins over UC Davis, Northern Arizona and Santa Clara at the Cable Car Classic. } During the three-game stretch, TSU trailed for just 20:18 of the total 120 minutes. } Six different players made their TSU debuts in California including junior college transfer Delano Spencer, who led the Tigers with 15 points against Santa Clara. } Redshirt senior guard Tahjere McCall earned OVC Player of the Week for his performance at the Cable Car Classic where he averaged 15.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. HEAD COACH DANA FORD ON TRYING TO BRING BACK THE TSU/MTSU RIVALRY } We need to win one first. They ve kind of owned us in terms of wins and losses. Last year s game was a closer game, but we still ended up losing. Years ago when MTSU was in the Ohio Valley, this was a pretty intense rivalry. Obviously in the 80s and 90s we had some really good teams and they had good teams. I guess it s time for us to do our part to bring it back I think it s a game we ll try to play every year. ABOUT THE BLUE RAIDERS } The Blue Raiders are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Milligan and Murray State. } Selected second in the Conference USA Preseason Poll, MTSU won the Conference USA Tournament last season and upset second-seeded Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament. } Among the returners from last year s team are Preseason All-Conference USA selections Reggie Upshaw and Giddy Potts. } Upshaw is leading the Blue Raiders with 10.5 rebounds per game and Potts has dished out a team-best 4.0 assists per game through two games. Arkansas transfer JaCorey Williams has made an immediate impact, putting up a team-high 21.5 points per game on 56.3 percent shooting. EARLY SEASON VICTORIES } TSU is 3-0 for the first time since the season. } The Tigers are 3-0 for the fourth time since joining Division I prior to the season. } It is the first time in school history the Tigers are 3-0 when the team s first three opponents compete at the Division I level. IN RANGE. } In TSU s win at Santa Clara on Nov. 13, the Tigers shot 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) from three-point range. } It was the sixth time the Tigers have made 10 or more threes in a game in the Dana Ford era. } Delano Spencer finished 5-for-6 from long distance in the game.
