6 -4 Season Highlight Every so often, there are nights in athletics that are, well, just special. Not just because of a highlight play, comeback win, or something along those lines. They say records are meant to be broken. Now that may be true, but when it happens, nine times out of ten you are still left in awe. That s exactly how people felt as they left Hahn Gymnasium on January, 4. People came to Lindsborg in hopes of watching another Swedes victory, or possibly they were there to support the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser. Whatever the case, the fans and media got a chance to witness something special. It was a night which the Swedes won easily over the Bethel College Threshers, -77. But one thing stuck out among all the rest: the play of senior guard Idris Ibn Idris. He led the way with 4 points and set the Bethany basketball record for most points scored in a single game. It was a night to remember for Swedes basketball fans. It seemed as though anything he put up was going in. The record was previously held by Ken McDonald at 4. McDonald was the record holder since the season. The Bethel game in Hahn Gym was special as it was our Coaches vs Cancer suits and sneakers game. To top it off, Idris had an incredible record setting game, which was more the norm than the exception for him all season long. Idris was also his usual humble self which made him a pleasure to coach and endeared him to our fans, said Head Men s Basketball Coach Clair Oleen. Idris started his scoring early, and he continued to score often. Idris scored of his 4 points in the first half, and still found a way to dish out four assists. He was out of in the first half from the floor, and three of six from the line. He continued strong in the second half, making five of eight second half shots, including three more triples. The final stat line for Idris was: 4 points on 4 shots, while shooting 7 percent from the field (7-4) and six of ten from the free throw line. He grabbed seven rebounds, had five assists, and four steals. This wasn t the only scoring outburst or record by Idris or the Swedes last season. The team was one of the most proficient scoring teams in the history of Bethany basketball. They ranked fourth in NAIA Division II for scoring offense per game with 89.5 points per contest, which was also first in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). The Swedes scored a total of,775 points in the season, which was st in the NAIA. They made 7.77 three point field goals per game (4 total), and shot 48 percent from the floor. Both categories ranked them 4th in the nation. Individually, Idris ranked second in NAIA Division II in points per game. He averaged 7. and scored a total of 847, third in the nation for total scoring. He also ranked in the top ten for three point field goal percentage shooting better than 45 percent from behind the ark. The Swedes were on a record breaking tear this year, and it seemed like any given night the record book would be rewritten. For example, Bethany College now holds the NAIA Division II team record for the largest margin of victory in an overtime game. The Swedes scored points on December 4, to beat Southwestern College by 7 points, 8-9. Bethany had the best scoring average per game in program history. They averaged 89.5 points per game, with the total of,775 points over games. The previous record was held by the team that averaged 88. points per game. The -4 team holds the Bethany record for most field goals made and attempted in a season. The Swedes made 99 to best the previous record of 98, set again by the team. They attempted,4 field goals last season, 498 more than the previous record in the season of,5 shots. As a team, the Swedes had more free throws attempted than any other year. They shot 84 free throws last season compared to the previous high of 77 in the season. They also made more, 59, than the season, 5. Bethany pulled down, rebounds in -4. Before that, the highest was 98 in the season. Bethany also set a new record for the most three-point field goals made in a game in a - win over Panhandle State on November 9,. The Swedes made of the 8 they attempted in the overtime win. While this team won games and was a record setting offensive team that was fun to watch, we were extremely disappointed we did not return to the National Tournament. We galantly fought through major injuries all season long, including two starters the last two weeks and during post season. However, the bottom line that ultimately kept us from returning to Branson was our deficient defense. We will be much improved defensively in 4-5, added Oleen. Idris set eight individual records, and Jordan Bieberle added another. Bieberle is the new record holder of most three-point field goals made in a game after he knocked down eight against Tabor College at a home game on December 7,. Besides the single game record setting night against Bethel, Idris was a scoring machine. He has the best scoring average during a season, 7. points per game, and the best scoring average over his whole career, 5. points per game. Dale Gorsky held the average during a career with 8.7, and Jerry Krone scored 59 points in the 978 season, an average of.4 points per game. Idris attempted and made more field goals than anyone in Bethany history. He made 84 of his 5, which was better than the of Kirk Swenson in , and more than the 87 of Swenson in the same season. Idris also set the records for most free throws attempted in a season, 89, and most free throws made in a season, 4. Gorsky previously held the record for most free throws in a season with 4 in 99-97, and Krone made free throws in Idris finished the season with 874 points, and finished his career as a Swede with, points. Idris was a KCAC st team All-Conference award winner, a second team NAIA All-American, and also had the opportunity to play in the first ever NAIA All-Star game in Kansas City. Kirby Hawkins was named to the third team. Vincent Roybal received Honorable Mention in the KCAC. Derek Knopp was the Swedes KCAC Champion of Character and also was a NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete.

9 4-5 Season Outlook The Bethany College men s basketball team is coming off of one of the most successful season in recent years both as a team and individuals. The Swedes eclipsed the -win mark for the first time in the past seasons. A season ago, the Swedes were known for their offensive explosiveness, but the team will look to the other end of the court for this season s success. We have a long and athletic team all across the board, said Head Cach Clair Oleen. The expectation is to use our length, athleticism, physical conditioning and work ethic to create a lot of offense with our defensive pressure. The result will be a very high octane, up tempo style of basketball. As a team Bethany was fourth in the NAIA in scoring offense per game (89.5) and was first in the KCAC. They were st in scoring offense with 775 points on the season. The Swedes made three-point field goals per game which was 4th in the nation, they made 4 which was 7th in the nation, and Bethany ranked 8th in the nation by making. percent of their three-point attempts. As a team Bethany made 47.9 percent of their shots which was second in the KCAC and 4th in the nation. Bethany set or broke nine team records while also having nine individual records broke through the -4 season. The Swedes also hold the NAIA Division II record for the largest margin of victory in an overtime game after the Swedes beat the Moundbuilders. Bethany scored points on December 4, held Southwestern College to six points and won 8-9 in a 7-point OT win. The Swedes will return only five players that saw playing time last year, as they lost a good amount, nine letterwinners total. Bethany will be without Idris Ibn Idris, Kirby Hawkins, Vincent Roybal, Jordan Bieberle, and Dwight Abad. All have moved on from the Bethany basketball program or have used up their playing eligibility. The five players accounted for the majority of the Swedes points last season, and they were the top five points per game averages on the team. Without those five players, the Swedes will have a new look. Bethany will rely on a new five who have KCAC experience. The Swedes will look to guards Larry McLin, Nathan Coleman, Devin Smith, and big men Alex Loul and Brandon Huskey to stabilize a new and young group of players. Coleman is the lone starter returning from last season s squad. He averaged eight points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game and also shot 47 percent from the floor. In addition to a bigger offensive role, Coleman will again be counted on to be a key defender. Last season he had the challenge of guarding every position on the floor at one point or another. There are five returners who played significant roles last season and are good athletes. All five have continued to develop their skill sets as basketball players and will have the opportunity to have even more significant roles on this year s team. The five are doing a tremendous job of leading this team. They are bringing us to a much higher level of work ethic while engraining us in a tremendous culture of defense, work ethic, and accountability, added Coach Oleen. Loul and McLin earned considerable minutes, especially near the end of last season. McLin averaged. points a game and. rebounds per game. Loul added.4 points per game and another.5 rebounds while shooting over 5 percent from the field. Huskey also shot over 5 percent from the field and added.5 points per game and. rebounds per game coming off of the bench. Smith added. points per game and a rebound per game for the Swedes. The Swedes brought in length and athleticism to help with their defense. Coach Oleen and Associate Head Coach Denver Cobb are optimistic for newcomers Jonathan Gidson, a junior from Denver, Colo., Cody Harris, a junior from Rapid City, S.D., Gary Jones, a sophomore forward from Kansas City, Kan., and Alex Peterson, a freshman forward from Overland Park, Kan. Coach Oleen said later, We have added some experienced newcomers who come to us with some very good credentials. The have joined our leadership team in bringing an incredible work ethic and defensive culture to Bethany basketball. They too, are accountable and unselfish and have blended very well with this team in regard to chemistry. Bethany hits the court for their alumni scrimmage on Saturday, October at : p.m. The Swedes officially open their season at home on Saturday, November against Avila University, Kansas City. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
