NPHS started varsity football in 1968 under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Marvin Shepler, who led the Dragons for 34 seasons. In the first 49 years of Dragon football, NP has won 16 conference titles, nine sectionals, five regionals, three semistates and a state championship. Tonight will go a long way in deciding who wins the 2017 HHC title. The Dragons currently enter with a one-game lead, with Shelbyville in a second-place tie at 3-1. If the Dragons win and Delta beats Pendleton Heights tonight, NP will clinch at least a tie for its fifth straight HHC title and seventh in nine years. Last week, NP s special teams were big in a 59-3 victory. The kickoff team recovered a loose ball, the punt team forced three errant plays that set the Dragons up inside the 30 and led to a scoop-and-score by Luke Ely, and the Dragons also intercepted three passes. NP had six takeaways in the game, and is +12 on the season. J.T. Hoffman, Jaxon Manes and Brody Luker all had interceptions. Maxen also had 10 tackles. Offensively, Zach Neligh ran for 133 yards and threw for 135 in the victory, throwing TD passes to Hoffman and Colby Jenkins. Neligh also ran for two TDs. Luke Canfield crossed the 1,000- yard mark and ran for three touchdowns, giving him 17 for the season. For the third straight week, the Dragons held an opponent to negative rushing yards, holding G-C to minus-26 on the ground. Tonight s foe Shelbyville has made a habit of winning close games in HHC play. The Golden Bears beat Delta in Week 3 on a late TD, and did the same last week, beating Yorktown on a 69-yard TD pass from Landon Watson to Cooper Lewis in the closing minutes. The Golden Bears are looking to clinch their third straight winning season under the tutelage of the dean of HHC coaches, 23 rd -year head coach Pat Parks. He is one win shy of 125 for his career. Sam Lewis had three INTs in the game. Watson has been very good of late, throwing for 989 yards, more than half of which have come in the last two weeks. Damon Lux leads Shelbyville s rushing attack with 624 yards. Streaks continue The New Palestine football team has now won 42 consecutive regular season games since Last week s win tied Lawrenceburg ( ) for the seventh-longest streak in state history. NP needs four wins to tie Brownstown for sixth. The Dragons have now won 31 consecutive HHC games, extending a league record. HHC leaders The Dragons have several players ranked among the HHC leaders. Luke Canfield is second in rushing yards (1050) and rushing TDs (17) and third in scoring (108). Zach Neligh is third in rushing yards (707) Colby Jenkins is seventh in receiving yards (350) and third in receiving TDs (6). Ryker Large leads the league in INTs (5). Luke Ely leads the league in sacks (5.5). Listen live Listen to all Dragon football games on New Pal Radio on the TuneIn mobile app or TuneIn.com. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m.
