5 WHAT S HAPPENIN? The NIU women s basketball team will close its non-conference schedule Tuesday night when it heads to Bradley. The Huskies and the Braves will tipoff at 7 p.m. at Renaissance Coliseum. LAST TIME OUT NIU travelled to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa in the Huskies final game before Christmas. Both teams played a defensive first half, combining for 39 points and a field goal percentage of 29 percent. The Huskies and Panthers opened the second half in a scoring flurry before NIU put the clamps on UNI s shooting. Northern Illinois University held Northern Iowa without a field goal for the final 9:45 of the game. Free throws were the Panthers golden ticket in the game as they outscored the Huskies, Jenna Thorp finished 6-of-9 from the field with 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Huskies in scoring. NIU shot 50 percent from the field in the second half with a clip of 11-for-22. SCOUTING THE BRAVES Bradley enters the game with a 1-9 record, including a current winless streak of three games. The Braves lone win of the season occurred at home against Missouri on December 6 as BU stymied the Tigers, After playing its first five games on the road, Bradley started an eight-game home stand Nov. 30 and will wrap up the eight game slate Jan. 4 versus Drake. Last time out on Dec. 21, the Braves fell to Bowling Green, 61-47, as Whitney Tinjum and Michelle Young each scored 15 points. Young is Bradley s leading scorer in its first 10 games with an average scoring rate of 16.8 points. The guard is shooting.468 from the field this year with 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Tinjum, a Washington State transfer, is second on the squad with a 12.5 point per game average, though she made her first appearance Dec. 18 versus Chicago State. REWIND - LAST YEAR S MEETING In a meeting at the NIU Convocation Center, the Huskies and Braves played a back and forth first half with NIU taking a lead at halftime. The Huskies would lead the entire second half, building a 16 point advantage in the half before defeating the Braves, Then-junior Jenna Thorp made her first appearance of the season after suffering an injury in preseason and scored 10 points off the bench. Amanda Corral led the game in scoring with 17 points. Natecia Augusta won the battle down low in the post as she recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 boards. Bradley s Michelle Young scored eight points in the game. FRINGS KNOWS THEM WELL NIU Graduate Assistant Kelly Frings knows the inside scoop on Bradley as she played four seasons for the Braves from The Milwaukee, Wis., native is in her first season with the program, after graduating from BU last spring. In last year s NIU-Bradley game, Frings scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in 16 minutes. Frings made 111 career appearances for Bradley, finishing her career with a.445 field goal percentage. KNOCKING ON THE DOOR Only weeks after Danny Pulliam became the 20th player in program history to record 200 career assists, classmate Amanda Corral is only nine shy of becoming the 21st with 200 assists. The senior guard is also looking to become the 11th player in NIU history to record 1,000 points and 200 assists in program history. LOCKDOWN DEFENSE In the final 9:45 of the game at Northern Iowa on Dec. 21, the Huskies held the Panthers scoreless from the field as they missed their last 11 shots. UNI s only source of points in that span was from the free throw line, going 9-for-13. The Huskies opponents are only scoring 54.6 points per game, the second-best average behind defending Mid-American Conference regular season champion Bowling Green. The scoring average also puts the Huskies at No. 21 in the country in scoring defense. NIU has not allowed an opponent to score 60-or-more points since Valparaiso reached 65 on Nov. 20. The Huskies are surrendering 52.3 points per game in its last six games. UNDER 40 PERCENT In the last three games, NIU s oponents - Missouri, SIU Edwardsville and Northern Iowa - have shot under 40 percent from the field. Since the Tigers shot 35.3 percent on Dec. 14, the rest of the foes have been held under 33 percent from the field. SIUE narrowly eclipsed the 30 percent margin (.306) on Dec. 17, while UNI shot.314 last time out against NIU. GRAY WORKING INSIDE AND OUT Sophomore Amber Gray has found a knack as a target down low in the post for NIU as of late. In the last three games, Gray has accounted for six assists as she s been an inside-out target for the Huskies. She set a career-high in helpers at Missouri with three on Dec. 14, and tied the mark seven days later at Northern Iowa. Gray also accounted for four points at Cedar Falls. BOX SCORE FILLER Ally Lehman has been one of NIU s top all-around players since her arrival last season and this season has been no exception. She s led the Huskies in rebounding in seven-of-nine games this year, averaging 7.6 per game. Scoring, Lehman is registering 8.8 points per game, second-most, while she s dishing 3.6 assists per game, tied for the the team lead with Danny Pulliam. Lehman is 180th in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio (1.45), 185th in rebounds per game (7.6) and 194th in assists per game (3.6). QUITE A STREAK Senior Amanda Corral was held scoreless for the first time in her NIU career last time out at Northern Iowa. Corral s scoreless performance broke a streak of 95 career appearances for the Hobart, Ind., native. She is averaging 14.8 points per game through six games and is No. 18 all-time on the NIU scoring list with 1,173 points. HUSKIES ON THE RUN NIU has not been afraid to play on the run as it has outscored its foes on fast breaks, 52-25, through nine games this year. Only once have the Huskies been outscored on fast breaks as UIC outgunned NIU, 8-4, on Nov. 17. Since that time however, the Huskies led their foes on fast breaks,

7 THE 200-CLUB Danny Pulliam entered the SIUE game on Dec. 17 one assist shy of 200 in her career. The senior reached that plateau 5:40 into the contest as she dished a ball to Ally Lehman, who broke an 8-8 tie with three-point basket to give the Huskies the lead, which it never surrendered. Pulliam became just the 20th player in NIU women s basketball history to reach the historical mark and was the first since Courtney Shelton in THE HUSKIES GOT HANDLES Northern Illinois University has had few issues turning the ball over this season as it is currently averaging 12.0 turnovers per game. Of all 343 NCAA Division schools, the Huskies own the ninth best mark in the country and lead the Mid-American Conference in fewest turnovers. CAUSING HAVOC NIU s game this season has been ball retention and causing turnovers to create offense. In their last three games against Delaware State (Nov. 30), Missouri (Dec. 14), SIUE (Dec. 17) and, the Huskies have caused 64 turnovers. FIVE TIMES THE FUN For the first time this season and third time this calendar year, the NIU women s basketball recorded a balanced effort on its scoring tally as five different players scored 10-or-more points versus Delaware State Nov. 30. Junior Amanda Corral paced the way with 18 points while freshman Renee Sladek scored 15. Seniors Jenna Thorp (12) and Danny Pulliam (10) also reached the plateau, while sophomore Ally Lehman (13) rounded it out. DEFENSE IS A HUSKIE GAME Last season, the NIU Huskies were ranked second in the MAC in scoring defense with an average of 64.0 points allowed per game, the second-fewest in the conference behind only regular season champion Bowling Green. Since Head Coach Kathi Bennett arrived in 2010, the Huskies have finished the year no lower than fifth in the MAC s final scoring defense rankings. NIU SOARS WITH LATEST GSR SCORE The NIU women s basketball team recorded the highest NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the department amongst the Huskies revenue generating sports, scoring in the 92nd percentile. That means an average of 13-of-14 scholarship players graduate from the program with degree over their four years at NIU. The national average for women s basketball is 69 percent. Against Central Michigan on Feb. 22, one of Bennett s first recruits to NIU, Amanda Corral, surpassed the 1,000-point mark becoming the 28th player in school history to accomplish the feat. NIU would go on to the second round of the MAC Tournament last season, defeating Eastern Michigan in overtime to advance to Cleveland for the second time in the last three seasons. Bennett, who earned her 300th career win with NIU to join her father, legendary coach Dick Bennett, on the 300-career-win list, came to NIU after two seasons as an assistant coach at Wisconsin, where she coached the Badgers defense and was instrumental in UW making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years in Wisconsin finished tied for third in the league and led the Big Ten in scoring defense in 2010 after ranking 10th in the league in that category prior to her arrival.
