4 Team Notes AIR FORCE HIGHEST RANKING MW SCHOOL/SERVICE ACADEMY IN RECENT POLL: The Air Force Academy ranks 31st nationally among Division I schools in the 10th Annual NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings. NCSA Athletic Recruiting s Collegiate 2012 Power Rankings assess the academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country. The Power Rankings were developed to help prospective student athletes and their families evaluate the particular strengths of the top colleges and universities at the Division I, II and III levels. Fewer than six percent of colleges and universities earn a spot in NCSA Athletic Recruiting s Top 100 for 2012, and the United States Air Force Academy is in this elite class. The Collegiate Power Rankings from NCSA Athletic Recruiting are calculated for each Division I, II and III college and university by averaging student-athlete graduation rates, academic rankings provided by U.S. News & World Report, and the strength of athletic departments as determined by the Learfield Sports Directors Cup. These Power Rankings are only one example of NCSA Athletic Recruiting s commitment to redefining collegiate recruiting. As the leading athletic recruiting network, NCSA connects more than 42,000 college coaches with student-athletes who hope to pursue both higher education and the chance to compete in athletics at the college level. A comprehensive list of the rankings, both overall and by division, is available at: org/about-ncsa/power-rankings. FALCONS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN APR: The Air Force football program was among 12 nationally recognized Football Bowl Series programs recognized with the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Public Recognition Award, announced by the NCAA. Air Force is one of just two in the Mountain West Conference (Boise State) and was the only service academy recognized. This year marks the sixth straight the football program and the team s score of 980 ranks 10th nationally. Northwestern has the highest ranking of 995, followed by Boise State and Duke at 989. Each year the NCAA honors selects Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team s academic performance. 12 Nationally recognized FBS teams # School APR Score 1. The team is wearing the Air Force patch to honor the men and women of the U.S. Air Force. The team is also honoring 10 of the Air Force s Heritage Wings and Groups by wearing patches on their home uniforms; and six USAF Air and Space Expeditionary Wings by wearing patches on their away uniforms for the fifth straight year. The Heritage Wings and Groups date back to the foundations of the Air Force, beginning on Aug. 1, 1907, when the U.S. Army Signal Corps established a small Aeronautical Division to take charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines and all kindred subjects. But, it was not until May 26, 1909, that military aviation was born, when Lts. Frank P. Lahm and Benjamin D. Foulois made their first ascent and qualified as the airship s first Army pilots. The National Security Act of 1947 created a separate Department of the Air Force, headed by a Secretary of the Air Force; from that law, today s Air Force was officially born on Sept. 18, The 10 patches represent active duty units that have colorful and distinguished histories. These heritage units not only represent the legacy of the Air Force past, but also the promise of its future. Each Air Force mission and capability is represented with this cross-section of units. The Air and Space Expeditionary Force concept is the Air Force s vision for the 21st century to organize, train, equip and deploy forces for contingency operations while remaining ready to meet national crises. AEF also helps create a mindset and culture that embraces the unique characteristics of air and space power - range, speed, flexibility and precision. 13 Media Services Media policies at the Air Force Academy are designed to provide simple access to game playing participants and coaches of the Air Force football program. Our policies begin by ensuring the football program supports the educational and leadership development of the cadets at the Air Force Academy while providing easy coverage for media members. Air Force Football Practices- Air Force prefers open football practices. Open practices provide the opportunity to easily observe officer candidates while working through one of the Academy s mission elements. Open practice guidelines include refraining from blogging or reporting of injuries or tactics. Video/Photography - Video and photography during practices can be done by those who are first cleared through the Air Force media relations staff. August 3-23 video and photos can be taken during pre-practice and periods 1-5 each day. Starting August 27, video and photographers cleared through the media relations staff may shoot film during pre-practice and periods 1-5 on Mondays and Tuesdays. Player Availability- Player interviews prioritize each cadet s academic, military, squadron, and leadership obligations in addition to any needed physical rehabilitation/treatment. Because treatment time may be necessary, players must physically complete the previous practice or game. Beginning August 27, with the amount of graded academic material increasing after the 12th day of school (i.e. quizzes, papers, projects and tests), four junior or senior cadets will be accessible on Mondays after practice. Then on Tuesdays, from 1:15-1:45, four other junior or senior cadets will be available. Up to three freshman or sophomore cadets who played in the most recent game will be available on Tuesdays from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Coaches Availability- Air Force assistant coaches are available from August 3-24 to discuss their position players after Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday practices and Coach Calhoun will also be available following Saturday practices. From August 27 through the completion of the regular season, Calhoun is accessible in a number of ways. They include: Sundays at 6 pm during the season via conference call, Tuesday mornings on the MW teleconference, Tuesday afternoon from 12:30-1:00 at the Air Force Academy media room, and Wednesday immediately after practice. After home games, it will be in the media room at the south end of the field. 14 Head Coach Troy Calhoun The Air Force Academy s purpose is to develop young people of strong character who graduate and serve as outstanding leaders for our country. Air Force student-athletes must complete one of the nation s most demanding academic curriculums while further embedding the kind of heart and character that are a crucial foundation for service. It s a purpose Troy Calhoun thoroughly respects and appreciates. While embracing the mission of the Academy, Calhoun has also found a way to build a very competitive football program within one of college football s strongest conferences. Calhoun is the only coach in the 100-plus year history of service academy football to lead teams to at least seven wins and a bowl game in each of his first five seasons. Calhoun was a semifinalist for the 2010 Paterno National Coach of the Year award for his efforts on and off the field. His players have also been amazingly successful finishing their academic and leadership responsibilities. The Air Force football team s most recent NCAA APR is an astounding 980 which once again places the Academy amongst the nation s top 10 in the sport of football. Calhoun, who is in his sixth season, has also lifted the Falcon football program to unprecedented heights within the Mountain West Conference. Calhoun is after taking over a program that had posted three straight losing seasons before his arrival. They have posted wins at Notre Dame and Utah and led the Falcons to a school-record five straight bowl games. Last season he led the Falcons to a 7-6 overall mark and to the school s first back-to-back Commander-in-Chief s Trophy titles since 2002 with victories over Army and Navy. The team also qualified for the Military Bowl. In Mountain West Conference play Calhoun is and his conference winning percentage (.622) is the fifth best in conference history. Air Force, coming off a three straight losing seasons, finished the 2007 season 9-4 overall and placed second in the Mountain West Conference with a 6-2 mark in Calhoun s first year. The Falcons earned their first bowl bid in five seasons, advancing to the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas. The five-game turnaround from the previous season, was the largest in the nation by a first-year head coach and tied as the third-largest overall in the nation. The five-game turnaround is the best in school history since the 1958 team had a school-record turnaround of six games. Calhoun was named the conference s coach of the year for his efforts. In addition, he was named coach of the year in Region 5 by the American Football Coaches Association and was one of eight finalists for national coach of the year honors. Calhoun followed with back-to-back 8-5 overall records and fourth place conference finishes with 5-3 marks in 2008 and The team earned bids to the Armed Forces Bowl each season and posted the school s first bowl victory since 2000 with a win over Houston in In 2010 the Falcons posted a 9-4 overall record and recorded their fourth straight top four conference finish with a 5-3 mark. The Falcons were nationally ranked for the first time since 2003 and posted a victory as a ranked team for the first time since The team capped the season with a 14-7 win over George Tech in 2010 Independence Bowl to earn a second-straight bowl victory. Calhoun brought a wealth of experience and impressive resume at the collegiate and professional levels that is flooded with success at every stop to the Academy. Calhoun came to the Academy after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans in The Texans were one of only two NFL teams to triple their number of wins from the previous year. Calhoun became a well-rounded NFL coach, working as a defensive assistant, special teams assistant and offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos from He began his NFL coaching career by serving as the defensive assistant under defensive coordinator Larry Coyer in Prior to the NFL, Calhoun was an offensive coordinator for six seasons on the collegiate level. He began his coaching career at Air Force, where he worked as a graduate assistant from He started at quarterback for the Academy in 1986 and was one of only two freshmen to letter for the 1985 team that finished fifth in the final polls with a 12-1 record that included wins over national powers Notre Dame and Texas. Calhoun served his country from as an active duty officer in the Air Force. He was the Falcons recruiting coordinator and the junior varsity offensive coordinator in He moved to Ohio University in 1995 where he served as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons. Calhoun was promoted to offensive coordinator in Calhoun moved to Wake Forest in 2001 and remained there prior to his stint with the Broncos. Groomed on the basics of integrity and passion, Calhoun is a native of Roseburg, Ore., and was raised in a home where both kids graduated from the Air Force Academy and were varsity letterwinners on nationallyranked teams. Calhoun s younger sister, Callie, is a 1991 Academy graduate and four-year letterwinner in track and cross country. Calhoun finished at the Academy on the superintendent s list and graduated with over a 3.0 grade point average and a military performance average of better than 3.0.
