The Gophers are 4-3 in Big Ten action, with a 1-2 mark on the road in conference play. Minnesota just concluded a stretch of four-straight games against opponents in the Top 15 of the Associated Press poll. It has happened just once before, when in 1987, the Gophers played #4 Iowa, #11 Illinois, #7 Purdue, and #2 Indiana in succession, going 0-4 in the stretch. The Gophers were 2-2 this year during the four-game test. MINNESOTA (15-5, 4-3) at NEBRASKA (9-9, 1-5) Sunday, January 26 5 p.m. CT Lincoln, Neb. (Pinnacle Bank Arena) Minnesota leads the league in steals per game (8.2) and free throw percentage (.756), while ranking fourth in three-pointers made per game (7.4) and assists (14.3). Junior center Elliott Eliason was named the team s fourth captain last week, joining seniors Maverick Ahanmisi and Austin Hollins and junior Andre Hollins. Eliason has been on a tear, leading all B1G players in rebounding (9.8) in conference games, and he picked up his sixth career and season double-double on Jan. 16, chipping in a game-high 13 rebounds along with 12 points in the win over the Buckeyes. Eliason is second in the Big Ten with six double-doubles this season. With his career night of 18 points and nine rebounds, junior forward Maurice Walker became the sixth different Gopher to lead the team in scoring during a game this season. He had been averaging 4.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game this season prior to Wednesday s win over the Badgers. Two of the Gophers transfers, guards DeAndre Mathieu and Malik Smith, have played integral roles in the team s success this season. Behind top scorer Andre Hollins, Mathieu is second in scoring in B1G games, averaging 11.6 points per game. Smith is the team and conference s top free-throw shooter (.886) while Mathieu leads the Gophers in assists (87). Late in the second half, Hollins s layup pushed him across the 1,000 career point total. Hollins has scored in double figures in all but one of the Gophers games, and his 20-point total against the Jackrabbits was one shy of his career high. For the Gophers, it is the first weekly award of the season and the first since Trevor Mbakwe was recognized on March 4 last season. andre hollins on Wooden Award List Gophers junior Andre Hollins has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason list. He is one of 50 players on the list, chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the midseason list and the official voting ballot, which will consist of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation s top 10 players, will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. Beast on the boards Minnesota has been represented atop the individual Big Ten Conference rebounding category twice in the last three years thanks to Trevor Mbakwe, who played two-plus seasons in Maroon & Gold and racked up 686 boards. Junior center Elliott Eliason is looking to keep the trend going. He erupted for a career-high 17 rebounds in the Gophers season-opening victory over Lehigh, and he added 11 boards in a win over Coastal Carolina and 11 more in a win over Wofford. Eliason currently leads the Gophers and is third in the Big Ten with an average of 8.5 rpg. Eliason added his third double-double with 12 boards and 10 points in the win over South Dakota State on Dec. 10. He had another on Jan. 2 against Michigan (10 pts., 10 rbs.) and his fifth double-double came at Penn State (11 pts., 12 rbs.). On Jan. 16 vs. Ohio State, Eliason led all players with 13 rebounds and added 12 points for his sixth double-double. Eliason also chipped in with 11 points against Wofford to give the Chadron, Neb. native his second-career double-double. His first came in the season opening win over Lehigh. Austin Hollins established his first career double-double with 11 points and a then career-high 10 rebounds against Montana (11/12). Austin responded with his second career double-double with 11 points and a new career-high 11 rebounds in the victory at Richmond (11/16). Maurice Walker made his first career start against New Orleans (12/7) and finished with a career-high eight rebounds. Against Wisconsin (1/22), Walker posted career highs of 18 points and nine rebounds. Andre Hollins posted 10 rebounds, a career-high, against Omaha which gave him his first career double-double. new beginnings Minnesota began the season on Nov. 8 with a whole new coaching staff, as well as five newcomers on the roster. Head Coach Richard Pitino came to Minnesota after spending last season at the helm of the Florida International program. Pitino led FIU to 18 wins, the fourth-most in program history, and its first appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game. FIU finished with 11 conference wins on the season, the most by a Panther team since joining the Sun Belt Conference. FIU had not had a winning season since , and in the three seasons before Pitino s hiring, FIU had posted a combined record of Pitino added former Gopher Ben Johnson, along with Dan McHale and Kimani Young, to his staff at Minnesota. Guards Malik Smith, DeAndre Mathieu and Jasen Baranowski, along with forward Joey King, made their Gopher debuts in Maroon & Gold against Lehigh. King led the Gophers with 20 points against Lehigh, one point short of his career high, which he set last season as a member of the Drake Bulldogs. Mathieu made his first start as a Gopher in the opener and finished with a game-high nine assists, one shy of becoming the first Minnesota player to finish a game with double-digit assists since Damian Johnson did so against Iowa in He ranks third in the Big Ten with 4.8 assists per game. Mathieu scored 15 points against Montana on Nov. 12, and he tallied a career-high 17 points against MINNESOTA MEDIA POLICIES Media Credentials Requests for working media credentials (newspaper, radio, TV, photo) for Minnesota home games must be made on-line at gophersports. com. 4 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 19. He tied that with 17 points in Maui against Chaminade on Nov. 17. He smashed that mark with a game- and career-high 27 points on Dec. 20 against Omaha. GOPHERS vs. NON-CONFERENCE opponents The Gophers defeated Lehigh on Nov. 8 and have now opened 22 consecutive seasons with a victory. Minnesota s last season-opening loss was to Arkansas in the first game of the 1991 Maui Invitational. Minnesota has a combined record of over the last seven seasons in regular-season non-conference games after a 13-1 start last season. The Gophers started 12-1 in 2011, 11-1 in 2010, went 9-3 to start the 2009 season, were a perfect 12-0 to start the 2008 season and went 10-2 in The Gophers have started 9-0 this season at The Barn and have gone 60-1 against non-conference opponents at Williams Arena over the last seven seasons. Minnesota finished the non-conference slate with an 11-2 record. The Hollins make history Junior Andre Hollins finished with seven points against Wofford on Nov. 21 to end a double-digit scoring streak. Dating back to last season, Andre had 12 straight double-digit games. Through 20 games, Dre is leading the Gophers and is 11th in the Big Ten Conference with a scoring average of 15.5 ppg. Both Hollinses have become members of the Gophers 1,000-point club: Austin against South Dakota State on Dec. 10, and Andre one game later against Omaha (Dec. 20). Andre scored 15 points in the first half against Coastal Carolina earlier this season to move past 900 career points, while Austin reached the milestone with his first bucket against Wofford. Austin Hollins finished his junior campaign with a career-high scoring average of 10.7 points per game, the second-highest average on the team last season. Andre Hollins led the Gophers, and finished eighth in the Big Ten Conference, with an average of 14.6 ppg last season, earning Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors by coaches and Third Team All-Big Ten by the media. Before this year, the Golden Gopher program had not seen a pair of players reach the 1,000-point plateau in the same season since the trio of Randy Carter, Voshon Lenard and Arriel McDonald did so during the season. EARNING THEIR stripes The Gophers lead the B1G as a team with an overall free-throw percentage of.756 ( ). That is currently the highest team FT percentage in the history of the program. Andre Hollins has started the season 96-of-114 at the line to bring his career FT percentage to.844 ( ), currently the best all-time at the University of Minnesota. Hollins led the B1G as a freshman with a.904 (85-94) free throw percentage. Hollins also led the B1G that season with a.923 (36-39) FT percentage in conference games. His percentage during the season is currently the best single-season effort in the history of the program, besting Terrance Woods ( ) percentage of.882 (45-51). This season, the Gophers have two shooters in the B1G top-10, with Malik Smith leading the conference with a.886 mark (39-44) and Hollins placing fifth with an 84.2 percent mark. showing their range Minnesota s roster includes its top three shooters from three-point range a season ago, as well as a pair of newcomers who excelled from downtown last season. The Gophers hit a season-high 11 treys earlier this season against Montana and then again Sunday against Purdue. Minnesota is 126-of-362 (.348) overall from downtown thus far. Andre Hollins made 81 treys a season ago, just four makes shy of the Gophers single-season record of 85 held by Blake Hoffarber ( ). Dre also made the record books with his percentage last season. He shot.418 (81-194) last season, the seventh-best 3-point percentage in program history. Austin Hollins was second on the team with 53 3-pointers, tied for the 13th-best single season in program history. Maverick Ahanmisi was third on the team in makes with 19 for the season. Malik Smith made 96 treys during his junior season at Florida International. Minnesota native Joey King went 33-for-95 (.347) from 3-pt range last season as a freshman at Drake. protecting the rim The Gophers led the B1G Conference in blocked shots with a total of 187 last season, the fourthmost in program history. The program has actually led the conference in blocks the last five seasons, thanks to the contributions from Damian Johnson (led the team in blocks three times ), Ralph Sampson III (led the team in blocks during the season) and Trevor Mbakwe (led the team in blocks last season). Minnesota junior bigs Elliott Eliason and Maurice Walker hope to keep that trend going. Eliason swatted a career-high seven balls against Wofford. Eliason has 51 blocks on the season - the second-most in the B1G - and 114 for his career. He has moved into a tie for 11th on the Gopher career list in the category. thievery Coach Pitino brought a defensive system to Minneapolis that is predicated on pressing. The hope is that the end result is a steal. The Gophers have managed 164 steals so far this season (8.2 spg), a figure that leads the Big Ten. Austin Hollins leads the team with 39 steals (B1G: 5th) while DeAndre Mathieu has swiped 35 (B1G: T-6th). Austin has 177 career steals, currently fifth on the Gophers all-time list. Pitino s FIU squad led the Sun Belt Conference and finished in the top-10 nationally in steals, averaging nearly 10.0 per game. FIU had six players that collected at least 25 steals for the season, including Malik Smith s 31 swipes. In comparison, the Gophers had four players with at least 25, led by Austin Hollins 59. Gophers Defeat FSU in b1g/acc challenge Minnesota led for much of the game, en route to a victory on Dec. 3 at Williams Arena. The Gophers were led by junior Andre Hollins with a game-high 21 points. It was his third 20-point game of the season, and the 18th of his career. Austin Hollins was the only other Minnesota player in double figures, finishing with 16 points, while tying for the team-lead with five rebounds. Minnesota recorded eight steals in the game, marking the sixth time in nine games that the Gophers have had eight or more steals in a game. Last season he was coming off of a year and a half break after suffering a knee injury as a freshman. The biggest change for Walker is his weight. The native of Canada played last season in excess of 300 pounds. Since the hiring of Richard Pitino and his staff, Walker has shed 65 pounds and is currently listed at 250 lbs. Walker made his first start against New Orleans and established career highs with 11 points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks. On Jan. 22 against Wisconsin, Walker broke out for career highs of 18 points and nine rebounds in 24 minutes of action, helping lead the Gophers past the ninth-ranked Badgers. Double Duty Minnesota sophomore Wally Ellenson saw action in nine games in what was an injury-plagued freshman campaign. He was healthy, however, in the spring as a high jumper on the Minnesota Track & Field team and finished the season as an All-American. Ellenson finished third at his first Big Ten Championships with a leap of ft. He went on to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships with a leap of 11 ft and finished eighth overall in the country after a personal-best jump of ft. Ellenson also won Gold at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia. It was his first career international event. He finished his scholastic career as the two-time Wisconsin Division 1 state champion in the high jump His state-record jump of seven feet, one inch in the 2012 regional meet was the nation s best by a high school athlete, and only two inches shy of an Olympic Trials qualifier He also owns Rice Lake school records in long jump (22-6) and triple jump (44-2). GOPHERS sign three to NLI s University of Minnesota men s basketball head coach Richard Pitino has added a trio of players for the season. The recruiting class includes Josh Martin, Nate Mason and Carlos Morris. Martin is a 6-foot, 8-inch forward from Bothell, Wash. He averaged 11.8 points and 8.2 rebounds as a junior at Bothell High School. He made 50 percent of his field goal attempts during the season. Martin, who can play both in the paint and on the perimeter, participated in the Reebok Classic Breakout over the summer. He received three-star ratings from Rivals. com and Scout.com. Martin spent two years at Seattle Prep before moving to Bothell. Earning all-state recognition, Martin has also received multiple inspirational awards at the high school and state level. He chose Minnesota over Pittsburgh and Florida State. Mason, a 6-1 guard from Decatur, Ga., currently attends Arlington Country Day High School (Jacksonville, Fla.). As a junior at Shiloh High School (Snellville, Ga.), Mason led the team to a 23-8 record. His AAU team, the CP3 All-Stars, finished second at the 2013 Nike Peach Jam, where Mason averaged 14.3 points per game in seven games. ESPN, Rivals.com and Scout.com tabbed him as a three-star recruit. Mason chose the Gophers over Kansas State and Virginia. We are excited to welcome Coach Pitino to the University of Minnesota, said University President Eric Kaler. Pitino brings the energy, skill, passion and commitment we need to lead our program and develop our student-athletes, both on and off the court. Pitino comes to Gold Country after spending one season at the helm of the Florida International University (FIU) basketball program. Prior to his arrival in South Florida, FIU had not had a winning season since and in the three seasons before his hiring posted a combined record of Coach Pitino is the right fit for our university, basketball program and student-athletes, said Teague. We were impressed with the turnaround at Florida International and his prior success with Louisville and Florida. We look forward to working with Richard to build a successful long-term program.
