THE COMMUNITY Iowa City is a diverse, highly cosmopolitan community of 60,000 set in the natural scenic beauty of Iowa s rolling hills and woods along the tree-lined banks of the Iowa River. Iowa City has all the art galleries, ethnic foods, historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere of a much larger city, but with the compactness and friendly feeling of a small town. As a place to live, Iowa City keeps winning awards and accolades - Named one of the ten most enlightened towns in the country by Utne Reader, listed in the book The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America and selected the number-one place to live in the nation by Editor & Publisher magazine. Economically, businesses such as Rockwell Collins, American College Testing and Procter & Gamble help keep the city booming. In Coralville, a branch offi ce of Geico Auto Insurance has provided many residents with employment opportunities. Culturally, Iowa City is alive with concerts, art exhibits, readings, plays and art events of all kinds. Located on the University of Iowa campus, Hancher Auditorium is a nationally-known performance center that brings in the best of Broadway, classical and jazz music, dance and other performances. The University of Iowa Theater Arts department also produces a full schedule of plays each year, featuring the work of student performers and directors. So whether you enjoy the arts as a spectator or as an outlet for your own creativity, Iowa City has the opportunities. Residents of Iowa City are not only economically and culturally enriched, they also take advantage of the numerous recreational facilities offered around town. The area s more than 30 parks provide opportunities for year-round activities including boating, hiking, swimming, fi shing and skiing. The city s greatest charm, however, remains the sincere friendliness of its citizens, the cosmopolitan atmosphere and the successful partnership built between the community and the University. Iowa City is located in eastern Iowa and is an easy trip to such cities as Des Moines (the capital of Iowa), Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Minneapolis. Also, Cedar Rapids, a city of more than 150,000, is just a short drive north of Iowa City. The Eastern Iowa Airport, which links residents to every major airport in the Midwest, nation and world, is only 20 minutes away. The Ped Mall is a relaxed, no-carsallowed outdoor plaza in the heart of downtown Iowa City which has cafes, boutiques, outdoor food vendors and street performers. The Coral Ridge Mall is the largest shopping mall in Iowa. OLD CAPITOL One of the most recognizable sites in Iowa City is the gold dome of the Old Capitol which is situated in the heart of downtown. Built in 1840, it is Iowa City s most historic building. The Old Capitol was the site of the fi rst governor inauguration as well as the fi rst six Iowa General Assemblies. It is also where the state s Constitution was drafted. When the capital was moved to Des Moines in 1857, the Old Capitol was dedicated to The University of Iowa, becoming the fi rst building owned by the University. CORALVILLE LAKE Just north of Iowa City is Coralville Lake, an outdoor recreational area that offers a variety of opportunities for the public. Coralville Lake offers picnic shelters, biking, hiking, fi shing, boating, swimming, hunting, camping, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, golf and disc golf. 2 A TOTAL PROGRAM Big-time athletics is a staple of student life at the University of Iowa. The Iowa student body celebrates the Hawkeyes victory over Michigan last season in Iowa City. The University of Iowa Athletic Department, under the direction of Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby for the past 13 years, is regarded as one of the top intercollegiate programs in the nation. The men s and women s departments, operating separately for over 25 years, merged in 2001 under Bowlsby s direction. It combined nationally recognized programs for both genders into one successful and progressive athletic program. Combining their successes on the playing fi elds with continued success and recognition in the classroom, UI student-athletes practice and perform in some of the best facilities in the nation, while knowing the support of their efforts and attendance by Hawkeye fans ranks among the best in the country. While the Hawkeyes continue to compete with the best in the nation in a variety of sports, Iowa continues to boast some of the most impressive athletic facilities in the nation, operated by one of the most respected departments. Several new projects are underway on the Iowa campus. The goal is to improve all areas of the collegiate experience for Hawkeye student-athletes. One of the latest additions to the UI campus is the Roy G. Karro Athletics Hall of Fame and Visitors Center. Additional priorities for the Iowa program include the establishment and development of endowments for all sports programs, the continued enhancement of graduation rates, and the implementation of a long-range plan to ensure Iowa s fi nancial, academic and competitive future. As an example, all of Iowa s 13 scholarships for men s basketball are fully endowed. The graduation rate of Iowa s student-athletes has improved in each of the past 10 years and has consistently ranked above the graduation rate of all UI students. Hawkeye athletes have garnered more than 55 academic All- America honors since In Iowa led the Big Ten in academic all-big Ten selections and Iowa ranked second in In , over 140 male and female Iowa athletes earned academic all-big Ten recognition. During the 2003 fall semester, Iowa s male and female athletes posted a combined grade point average of over 3.0. Cliff Moore became Iowa s 47th NCAA Champion and 27th three-time all-american. As a team, the Hawkeyes placed second at the NCAA Championships. Robert Gallery became Iowa s third Outland Trophy winner as the nation s top interior lineman and was the second overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Alexis Maday was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and earned all-american honors. Maday helped led Iowa to its second straight NCAA Championships. 52

A TOTAL PROGRAM Iowa competed in its first-ever Outback Bowl in Tampa, FL, last January and defeated Florida (37-17). The Hawkeyes have finished the last two seasons ranked eighth nationally. Iowa athletes have been recognized as all-americans in their sport on more than 185 occasions during the past 13 years. Iowa s athletic teams during the athletic year continued their trend of success, on the playing fi elds and in their academic pursuits. The Hawkeye football followed its 11-2 mark of 2002 with a 10-3 record in 2003, including a win over Florida in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, FL. The Hawkeyes are one of 12 teams in the nation to win 21 games over the past two seasons. Iowa has played in January bowl games in each of the last two years and completed both the 2002 and 2003 seasons ranked eighth in the fi nal national rankings. Iowa s men s and women s basketball teams have advanced to post-season play in each of the last four seasons. The men s squad earned sole possession of fourth place in the Big Ten Conference, while the Hawkeye women tied for fourth and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Iowa wrestling squad earned the Big Ten title and went on to place second in the nation at the NCAA Tournament. Coach Jim Zalesky was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. Iowa has won six of the last 10 NCAA wrestling titles and nine of the last 14 championships. Iowa s men s and women s and gymnastics teams continue to rank among the best in the nation. The men s team again advanced to the NCAA Championships and the women s gymnastics squad advanced to the team competition at the NCAA championships for the second straight year. Iowa s women s softball team advanced to NCAA regional action for the ninth time in 11 seasons. Iowa has advanced to the softball World Series on four occasions over the past 10 seasons as Coach Gayle Blevins is one of three coaches to reach 1,000 career victories. From the rankings on the courts and playing fi elds, to the rankings in the classroom, to the rankings in fan and community support, to the ranking as a program that boasts some of the best athletic facilities in the nation, it s easy to understand why Iowa fans everywhere truly believe, It s Great to be a Hawkeye. Lisa Birocci broke Iowa s single season strikeout record (313) and helped led the Hawkeyes to its ninth NCAA Regional in 11 seasons. Linas Gaveika became a three-time all-american when he placed second on the parallel bars at the NCAA Championships. Jeff Horner and the Iowa men s basketball team have advanced to the post-season the last four years, including capturing the Big Ten Tournament title in

TRADITIONS THE HAWKEYE NICKNAME The University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa many years ago. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the fictional novel, The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them. In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired the nickname, chiefl y through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madison. Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843 and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to popularize the name, and territorial offi cials eventually gave it their formal approval. HERKY THE HAWKEYE The Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character, later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer III, instructor of journalism at Iowa. The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was the man who suggested Herky. Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and epitomized University life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron. During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mascot. Since that time, Herky has been a familiar fi gure at Iowa athletics events. SCHOOL COLORS For 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school offi cial colors. They chose Old Gold, the color of Iowa s vast corn fi elds and Black, the color of the rich soil. SCHOOL FIGHT SONG The Iowa Fight Song was written in 1950 by Mason City, Iowa, native Meredith Willson. Best known as the creator of Broadway s The Music Man, Willson was awarded a 1963 University of Iowa Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award for setting the spirit of Iowa to music. The lively cheer is sung hundreds of times during Iowa athletics events the year around. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Let every loyal Iowan sing; The word is Fight, Fight Fight for IOWA Until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!) Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for IOWA Come on and cheer until you hear the final gun. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Until the game is won. 54

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI When student-athletes consider their future, they should consider prospects beyond athletics. A list of all University of Iowa alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally would be diffi cult to assemble and could never be complete. 6 COMMUNITY SERVICE (1) Head Coach Lisa Bluder reads a book to children at a local elementary school. (2) Tiffany Reedy spends time playing cards with mentally challenged adults during Iowa s Annual Day of Caring. (3) The women s basketball team spent time and made Valentine cards for kids at the Children s Hospital of Iowa at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. (4) The women s basketball team helped distribute food and water at the River Run, which was part of Iowa s Annual Day of Caring. 56 The University of Iowa women s basketball team takes tremendous pride and enjoyment in its charity and community events conducted each year. In fact, it is very important for all those involved in the women s basketball program to understand the joy of helping others. The Iowa Women s Basketball Team are involved in numerous community service activities that include: Ronald McDonald House Big Brother/Big Sister Bowl for Kids Sake Make A Wish Foundation Habitat For Humanity The University of Iowa Health Care Pediatrics Visits I-Club Receptions The Iowa Wheelchair Challenge The American Heart Walk The Iowa City Annual Day of Caring Project The players and coaches also take time to read to children in the local Iowa City elementary schools as well extend invitations to elementary school children to attend home basketball games. I believe community service is very important for our program. We set a goal each year for how many activities we want to do within the community, just as we set goals for how many points we want to score in a game. Head Coach Lisa Bluder Community service is important because it is crucial to lend a helping hand to a community that supports and respects us. Senior Tiffany Reedy Community service is important because it s our way of giving back to the Hawkeye community that gives us so much. We look forward to our community service acitivities every year. Junior Morgan Kasperek

SEASON OUTLOOK After com- in four peting c o n s e c u t i v e p o s t - s e a s o n t o u r n a m e n t s and fi nishing in the Big Ten s f i r s t - d i v i s i o n t h r e e - o f - f o u r years, more of the same is ex- in pected 05. Iowa Head Coach Lisa Bluder and her staff welcome the return of seven experi- letterwin- enced ners and four freshmen. Last season, Iowa recorded a overall record Lindsay Richards and an impressive 10-6 mark in Big Ten action. The Hawkeyes came on strong down the stretch winning four of their fi nal six regular season contests. The team received a berth to the NCAA Championship, its 15th overall. One of the keys to success last season was Iowa s performance on the road. The Hawkeyes learned to win away from Iowa City, collecting eight wins, including fi ve of the last six. The eight road victories were the most by an Iowa team since (9). The Hawkeyes lose four letterwinners, including starters Jennie Lillis and Kristi Faulkner. Lillis was a two-time fi rst-team all-big Ten performer, while Faulkner was a two-time third team honoree. The Hawkeyes also lost Becca McCann to graduation and Lindsay Geoffroy to medical hardship. The returning starters are senior Jamie Cavey (16.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and juniors Johanna Solverson (5.6 ppg, 6.2) and Lindsay Richards (5.4 ppg, 2.9 apg). Although Richards is Iowa s returning point guard, she suffered her second torn anterior cruciate ligament in as many years while practicing with the Big Ten All- Star Team in June and will start the season on the sidelines. The Iowa coaching staff expects another full recovery and hopes for her return in January. It was incredibly unfortunate that Lindsay re-injured her knee, said Bluder. Her confi dence was growing as our starting point guard and you could see her mature on the court. Richards started all 29 games last season, ranking fi fth on the team in scoring (5.4 ppg) and free throw percentage (39-51,.765), second in assists (85) and fourth in steals (27). Her 2.93 assists average ranked 11th in the Big Ten. Richards was also an academic all-big Ten selection last year. Before injuring her knee as a freshman, she played in eight games as a reserve, averaging 4.5 ppg, 1.6 rpg and dishing out 29 assists. Filling the void left at the point will be freshman Abby Emmert and junior Crystal Smith. Bluder expects the duo to share time. Bluder admits that it will be a diffi cult adjustment for Emmert to lead the Hawkeye offense as a freshman, but that she has the skills and talent to be successful. As a coaches daughter, Abby has been around basketball her whole life. She s a good passer, has a good pull-up game and has great leadership potential. Smith (3.0 ppg, 2.2 rpg) has become a fan favorite in Iowa City due to her intensity and defensive brilliance. A team tri-captain this year, Smith has worked on her offensive skills over the summer and is expected to have a huge impact on Iowa s success. Smith will see most of her time at the off-guard position, but will defend the opposition s point guard. The native of Haughton, LA, saw her minutes increase last season and was Iowa s fi rst guard off the bench. Smith ranked eighth in conference steals (1.94), which was the highest ranking among non-starters. The junior tallied two or more steals in 14 games, including 10 steals (fi ve in each game) in two games against NCAA Final Four participant Minnesota. It s going to be necessary for Crystal to have a more offensive role this season, explained Bluder. For us to be successful we need an outside threat. We defi nitely need more offense from the perimeter and I think Crystal can do that for us. She s been focused more on defense the last couple of years. Crystal s a spark on our defense. For some players defense is work, but for Crystal it is something she really enjoys. Crystal gets a lot of confi dence out of frustrating her opponent. She takes her defense seriously and I hope that rubs off on our other players. Senior tri-captain Jamie Cavey will be the centerpiece of Iowa s offensive attack. The junior from Mechanicsville, IA, had a breakout season last year and developed into one of the league s premiere post players. Cavey became the fi rst Iowa center to lead the team in scoring (16.8 ppg) since Amy Herrig paced the Hawkeyes during the season. Jamie s improvement has been nothing short of miraculous, said Bluder. It s been wonderful to watch her development from a bench player to one of the top centers in the Big Ten. It s been fun to watch her development, not only as a player but also her confi dence, work ethic and leadership. It feels good going into the season knowing that you have a proven talent at center. Last season, Cavey matured into a dominate force in the paint. As a third team all-conference selection, she led Iowa in scoring 14 times and fi nished the season ranked first in scoring (16.8), fi eld goal percentage ( ,.562), free throws made (107) and attempted (141) and third in rebounding (4.8). Cavey ranked sixth in conference scoring and fourth in field goal percentage and 15th in free throw percentage. In addition, she improved her free throw shooting 23.1 percent from her sophomore to junior year. Jamie benefi ted from having Jennie Lillis as a teammate for three years, commented Bluder. Jennie constantly fed her positive vibes and told her how good she could be. I think she not only learned how to work hard and improve her confidence, but she also learned how to be a leader. She also has benefi ted from having a great strength and conditioning coach in Bill Maxwell. Additionally, Coach Jan Jensen does a terrific job working with our post players, teaching them post shots and foot work and motivating them to become their best. Other returnees include Solverson, Tiffany Reedy, Jenna Armstrong and Morgan Kasperek. Solverson, who started at small forward last year, was Iowa s second leading rebounder, pulling down 5.2 boards per game. One of the most versatile athletes in the Big Ten, Solverson may see time at both forward positions this season. 60

SEASON OUTLOOK My goal is to have the fi ve best players on the fl oor at one time, and if that means moving Johanna to power forward, that s what we ll do, explained Bluder. I think her versatility is a good thing that poses problems to opponents. Reedy, a team tri-captain, has seen her game improve the last two seasons and will be asked to provide team leadership on and off the court. The native of Dysart, IA, averaged 4.4 ppg and 3.2 rpg as the first forward off the bench last year. I hope Tiffany will have a breakout year like Jamie did last year, said Bluder. It seems like every year we ve had a player that has a breakout year. I think her confi dence has grown enormously since her freshman year. She is a good leader and has a very strong work ethic. Armstrong and Kasperek are two more returnees that have playing experience and are primed for a breakout season. Armstrong ranked second on the squad in 3-point percentage (10-26,.385), while Kasperek came off the bench and provided quality minutes in the post. I think Jenna and Morgan s experience will help them this year, commented Bluder. They ve been there, they know what s expected. They have that asset of playing and practice experience. Jenna can make a big difference in our team if her outside shooting becomes consistent. Morgan sees an opportunity with the departure of Lillis and McCann. When I look at our team I see a lot of question marks. A number of those question marks could become impact players for us this year. We have a lot of potential, but its unproven potential. Last season Iowa had three players average in double fi g- ures (Cavey, 16.8; Faulkner, 16.2; Lillis, 16.0). It marked the fi rst time in Iowa history that a trio of players scored 450 points or more in a single season (Cavey, 487; Faulkner, 469; Lillis, 463). Bluder sees this year s group of Hawkeyes having more balanced scoring up and down the lineup. We are going to be a more post-oriented team this year, admits Bluder. I think that s feasible but you still need to have contributions from the perimeter. A large portion of our offense will come from the post because that s where we have the most depth and experience. Some younger players may be asked to come in and contribute right away, which is not an ideal situation. I do feel we have some exceptional talent coming into our program. In addition to Emmert, Iowa s other talented freshmen class includes Krista VandeVenter, Stacy Schlapkohl and Jeneé Graham. VandeVenter, a 6-2 power forward from Osseo, MN, was runner-up Miss Minnesota Basketball last year. According to Bluder, she s a very good offensive player with a nice jump shot, post moves, she runs the fl oor extremely well, and is a terrifi c rebounder. Schlapkohl, a 6-3 power forward from Durant, IA, is another versatile post player. She has great foot work, scores mostly around the basket, rebounds well and has great hands. Bluder believes she ll emerge into a tremendous post player. Graham, a 5-10 small forward from Bolingbrook, IL, will help the team defensively. According to Bluder, her strengths are rebounding and defense. I think our freshmen will come in and contribute right away and, technically, that s something you don t want to happen, admits Bluder. You want to have a program where you re not counting on freshmen. Not having a sophomore class has changed our outlook a little. Iowa s schedule looks to be just as challenging as last season s 14th-ranked schedule. The Hawkeyes have the potential to play 11 teams that competed in 2004 post-season tournaments, including fi ve from the Big Ten conference that participated in the NCAA Championship. In addition to its demanding Big Ten slate, Iowa fans can get excited about six attractive non-conference home match-ups. For the third consecutive season, Iowa will tip-off the season with the annual KCRG TV-9 Hawkeye Challenge that includes Missouri, Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes will also host Marquette, Western Illinois and in-state rivals Iowa State and Drake. Iowa s diffi cult schedule also includes its fi rst-ever trip to the Bahamas. The Hawkeyes will play in the Junkanoo Jam that includes Akron and NCAA participants Florida and Oklahoma. Overall, I think our schedule is just as diffi cult as last season, said Bluder. Again we re playing Iowa State, Drake, Creighton, Northern Iowa and Marquette and we ve added the Bahamas tournament, Florida and possibly Oklahoma both very good basketball teams. There s a possibility that our schedule will be just as good, if not better than last year. Bluder s philosophy has been to challenge her teams with tough opponents. Your record may not look as glamorous at the end of the year, but at least the NCAA selection committee recognized us last year, commented Bluder. As long as the committee continues to reward teams that are making an effort to play against the best we are going to continue scheduling them. The tough non-conference schedule helps us prepare for a diffi cult conference slate, concluded Bluder. I think one of the reasons we fi nished fourth in the Big Ten last year was because of our tough non-conference schedule. The Big Ten portion of the schedule includes single games with Penn State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Purdue, with the Lady Lions and Badgers playing in Iowa City. One of the most decorated Big Ten senior classes has graduated, but Bluder still views the conference as extremely strong and one of the toughest and deepest in the country. I feel like the conference is going to have incredible balance. Even though the Big Ten lost a lot of i n d i v i d u a l stars, the league will still be trem e n d o u s. I can very easily see the league having fi ve teams in the top 25. Jamie Cavey 61
