5 2009 SEC Football Page 5 Week SEC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK OFFENSIVE DEFENSIVE SPECIAL TEAMS A.J. GREEN Wide Receiver GEORGIA Sophomore Summerville, S.C. (HS) ERIC NORWOOD Linebacker SOUTH CAROLINA Senior Acworth, Ga. (North Cobb HS) CHAD JONES Free Safety/Return Specialist LSU Junior New Orleans, La. (Southern Lab HS) Green caught a game-high eight passes for 153 yards and a TD in Georgia s win against Arizona State. Green s 56-yard TD reception came in the first quarter and gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Green and QB Joe Cox hooked up on a 36-yard reception on 3rd-and-6 late in the game, giving Georgia a 1st-and- 10 at the ASU 22 yardline. Three plays later, Blair Walsh hit the game-winning 37-yard field goal as time expired. Green had his first career FG block in the 4th quarter against the Sun Devils to help clinch Georgia s win. His eight receptions and 153 yards are single-game bests in the SEC thus far this season. The senior leader of South Carolina s defense logged a game-high 10 total tackles (seven solos) with a pair of sacks, another half-tackle for loss, partially blocked punt and two quarterback pressures in the Gamecocks win over Ole Miss. The two sacks give Norwood 28 in his career, which is tied for eighth place in SEC history. His 2.5 TFLs against the Rebels now give him 49.5 for his career, which is 11th in SEC history. The Gamecocks held Ole Miss to 10 points and 248 yards of total offense, including just 109 through the air. Jones returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown to open the fourth quarter in LSU s win over Mississippi State. The 93-yard return ranks second in LSU history and proved to be the winning points for the Tigers. Jones also recorded seven total tackles (four solos) and a pass deflection on defense. Keyed a last minute goalline stand by the Tigers that helped preserve victory with a pass deflection on 3rd-andgoal from the 1-yard line and then tackled MSU quarterback Tyson Lee an inch short of end zone on fourth down. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN FRESHMAN MARCUS GILBERT Tackle FLORIDA Junior Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (St. Thomas Aquinas) JUSTIN HOUSTON Defensive End GEORGIA Sophomore Statesboro, Ga. (HS) TRENT RICHARDSON Running Back ALABAMA Pensacola, Fla. (Escambia HS) Gilbert graded out a Champion for the fourth-consecutive week in the 41-7 victory over Kentucky. Helped UF to 362 yards rushing in the win, the most by Florida against an SEC opponent since 1989 (Vanderbilt). Gilbert leads a Florida offense that has scored a touchdown in 47 of the last 53 quarters, while going three-andout just 21 times over 56 quarters. The 31 points scored by the Gators in the first quarter were the most in the first quarter in Urban Meyer s head coaching career. Houston tied for the fourth-most tackles (four) and had the team s only sack in Georgia s win over Arizona State. Houston helped hold the Sun Devils to 88 yards rushing and only 116 yards passing. Houston was filling in for senior DE Rod Battle, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week. Richardson led the Crimson Tide in rushing with 65 yards on nine carries in Alabama s 35-7 win against Arkansas. He accounted for the Tide s first touchdown of the game on a 52-yard TD run in the second quarter, breaking four tackles and outrunning two defenders for the score. He also added two catches for 16 yards and participated on the kickoff coverage team. Richardson is now second on the team in rushing with 280 yards on 38 attempts and is tied for the team lead with four rushing touchdowns. 9 2009 SEC Football Page 11 Week 5 THE OBJECTIVE To allow for specific types of officiating calls to be immediately reviewed during all games hosted by SEC teams. THE COACHES CHALLENGE A new rule expands the ability of a head coach to challenge a reviewable play on the field. The head coach now retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling. THE SOURCE All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game (CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, Lincoln Financial) or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The Southeastern Conference has used instant replay since THE PLAYS Reviewable 1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line: a. Scoring Plays, including a runner breaking the plane of the goal line b. Pass complete/incomplete/intercepted at sideline, goal and endlines c. Runner/receiver in or out of bounds d. Recovery of loose ball in and out of bounds 2. Passing Plays: a. Pass ruled complete/ incomplete/ intercepted in the field of play and end zones b. Touching of a forward pass by an ineligible receiver c. Touching of a forward pass by a defensive player d. Quarterback (Passer) forward pass or fumble (if ruled incomplete, play is finalized) e. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off beyond the line of scrimmage f. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off after change of possession g. Forward or backward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmage h. Quarterback (Passer) starts arm forward, ball comes loss and play is ruled incomplete (if ball is quickly recovered) i. Quarterback (Passer) throws incomplete swing pass that is close to being forward or backward, and pass is ruled forward (if ball is quickly recovered) 3. Other Detectable Infractions: a. Runner ruled not down. b. Runner ruled down (when ball carrier is judged down by rule and the ball is fumbled, play may be reviewed if recovery of ball occurs in the immediate action following fumble and is prior to any official signaling ball is dead. Also reviewable when runner is ruled out of bounds near goal line.) c. Forward progress with respect to first down d. Touching of a kick e. Number of players on field f. Clock adjustments (in conjunction with overturned plays) g. Fourth-down/try fumble plays h. Field Goal Attempts (only when ball is ruled below or above the crossbar, inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights.) Not Reviewable 1. Fighting participants 7. Face mask 2. Off-sides/Encroachment 8. Taunting 3. Pass interference 9. Illegal blocks 4. Roughing passer/kicker 10. Holding 5. Illegal formations 11. Personal fouls 6. Taunting/excessive celebrations THE PROCESS Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with a DVSport Digital Replay System. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official is selected and assigned by the Conference Office. A live video feed is sent directly to the replay booth. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while capturing/digitizing it into the DVSport Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play as well as any replays as they occur in real time. SEC FOOTBALL VIDEO REPLAY Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Communicator. As the Technician marks the incoming video, each view (by mark) will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Communicator can touch/click on a thumbnail and immediately send that play/replay to the Replay Official. With the Communicator s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a remote device controlled by the Replay Official. All replays/video are viewed on an output monitor. The touch screen is only used to select the replays. While most plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system. THE EQUIPMENT Each SEC member institution uses the Digital Replay System developed by DVSport of Pittsburgh, Pa. The replay systems are maintained by the home institution with technical support from DVSport. BCS #1 vs. BCS #2 ABC [All Times Eastern and Subjet to Change] The Southeastern Conference has agreements to send nine of its member institutions to postseason bowl games following the 2009 season. The winner of the SEC Championship Game will automatically participate in the Bowl Championship Series comprised of the Sugar, Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls. The Capital One (2nd), will then make its pick following the BCS selections. The bowl must select the team with the next best overall record or a team that is within one win of the team with the next best overall record. The Outback, Chick-fil-A and AT&T Cotton Bowls will work with the conference office to determine picks 3-5. The Cotton Bowl has the first preference of teams from the Western Division and the Outback Bowl has first preference of teams from the Eastern Division. The Cotton or Outback Bowl can select teams outside of its divisional preference, but must not select them before the opposite bowl selects from its divisional preference. The Chick-fil-A Bowl has the selection of preference following the Cotton and Outback Bowls. In selections 6-7, the AutoZone Liberty and Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowls will make their selections, not in any specific order, but in consultation with the SEC Office. The Bowls will rank available qualified teams in order of preference. If there are no similarities in the order of selection, the bowls will be granted its selection. If the bowls rank the same teams in preference, the team involved in the process would get its preference of which bowl to participate. The PetroSun Independence Bowl will receive the eighth selection and the Papajohns.com Bowl will have the ninth pick of available SEC teams. SEC BOWL AGREEMENTS BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES The Bowl Championships Series is a five-game arrangement for post-season college football that is designed to match the two top-rated teams in a national championship game and to create exciting and competitive match-ups among eight other highly regarded teams in four other games. The five bowl games are the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the FedEx Orange Bowl, the Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi, the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the BCS National Championship Game that is played at one of the bowl sites. The 2010 Citi BCS National Championship Game will be played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Unless a Southeastern Conference champion qualifies to play in the BCS National Championshp Game, it will play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Fox Sports will televise the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl and the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the conclusion of the 2009 regular season. ESPN/ABC will televise the Rose Bowl presented by Citi and the Citi BCS National Championship Game. In the 11 previous years of the BCS, the Southeastern Conference holds a 12-5 mark in BCS games (.706) - the most wins of any other conference and the highest winning percentage of any conference participating in more than two BCS games. In BCS National Championship Games, the SEC is 5-0 (1.000) and has more BCS titles than any other conference. The SEC has won BCS crowns in 1998 (Tennessee), 2003 (LSU), 2006 (Florida), 2007 (LSU) and 2008 (Florida). In the history of the BCS, an SEC team has been in the BCS standings 328 times, second only to the Big 12 with 331. The SEC and the ACC have had 11 of its 12 teams ranked in the BCS standings at some poit since more than any other conference.

The SEC Academic Network is being established by the SEC in partnership with ESPN and the member universities. The Academic Network, developed using technology and coordination from ESPN Digital Media and Origin Digital, will feature content from every institution ranging from research, innovation and economic development to community partnerships, civic engagement and service. Our commitment to highlight the accomplishments of SEC member institution s academic programs was a key component of our new television agreements, said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. We are grateful to ESPN for providing the technology, expertise and tools they use in sports media to our institutions in support of academic pursuits. Each institution has its own page on the website that includes videos categorized by topic. Alumni, fans and students worldwide will have the ability to learn more about SEC academics in one place through video features that are posted by the league institutions. The Academic Network is a component of the SEC s 15-year television package with ESPN, which is the most comprehensive in the history of intercollegiate athletics. Also part of ESPN s commitment to SEC academic programs is the production of an annual Campus Connection telecast at each SEC institution, in which students take part in the production; telecasts of two programs annually dedicated to the academic accomplishments of SEC student-athletes; a weekly academic feature segment on ESPNU s SEC show; and selection of one undergraduate student from every SEC institution to participate in ESPN s summer internship program. SEC SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT The SEC has developed a sportsmanship statement for its institutions to follow. It states: Coaches and student-athletes of a member insititution, as well as individuals employed by or associated with that institution, including alumni, fans, patrons and boosters, shall conduct themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. Their behavior shall at all times reflect the high standards of honor and dignity that characterize participation in the collegiate setting. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, coaches, student-athletes and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifested not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program. It is the responsibility of each member institution to establish policies for sportsmanship and ethical conduct in intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational mission and goals of the institution. Furthermore, member institutions are responsible for educating on a continuing basis all constituencies about these policies.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN ARKANSAS HAS THE BALL The Aggies are the NCAA leaders in quarterback sacks per game just a season after posting just 16 sacks for the entire 2008 season and ranking No. 100 in the NCAA statistics. Miller has contributed eight sacks, and defensive mates LB Kyle Mangan, DL Tony Jerod-Eddie, DL Eddie Brown, jack Matt Featherston and DE Matt Moss have combined for six more. Greg Childs leads the team with three touchdown receptions this season (two vs. Georgia, one at Alabama). Last season, D.J. Williams and Andrew Davie led the Razorbacks with three touchdown receptions. SPECIAL TEAMS After the season-opener head coach Mike Sherman termed the Aggies punt game serviceable, but not a winning effort necessarily. Now three games into the season, the Aggies rank No. 7 nationally in net punting with a 42.0 average. First-year punter Ken Wood, a sophomore transfer from Montana, is averaging a healthy 44.0 yards on 11 punts and has left four boots inside the opponent 20-yard line. Only three of Woods punts have been returned, for a total of two yards. Against Alabama Dennis Johnson returned three kickoffs for 81 yards to bring his career total to 1,164 yards, which ranks as the fourth highest total in school history. The Razorbacks converted their first fake punt of the season at Alabama on a nine-yard run by Ronnie Wingo, Jr. The play came on fourth and six at the Arkansas 25-yard line. Alex Tejada remains perfect on the year going 1-of-1 on extra-point tries. He is now 4- of-4 on field goal attempts and 12--of-12 on extra-point opportunities.
