9 2009 SEC Football Page 11 Week 4 THE OBJECTIVE To allow for specific types of officiating calls to be immediately reviewed during all games hosted by SEC teams. THE COACHES CHALLENGE A new rule expands the ability of a head coach to challenge a reviewable play on the field. The head coach now retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling. THE SOURCE All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game (CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, Lincoln Financial) or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The Southeastern Conference has used instant replay since THE PLAYS Reviewable 1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line: a. Scoring Plays, including a runner breaking the plane of the goal line b. Pass complete/incomplete/intercepted at sideline, goal and endlines c. Runner/receiver in or out of bounds d. Recovery of loose ball in and out of bounds 2. Passing Plays: a. Pass ruled complete/ incomplete/ intercepted in the field of play and end zones b. Touching of a forward pass by an ineligible receiver c. Touching of a forward pass by a defensive player d. Quarterback (Passer) forward pass or fumble (if ruled incomplete, play is finalized) e. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off beyond the line of scrimmage f. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off after change of possession g. Forward or backward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmage h. Quarterback (Passer) starts arm forward, ball comes loss and play is ruled incomplete (if ball is quickly recovered) i. Quarterback (Passer) throws incomplete swing pass that is close to being forward or backward, and pass is ruled forward (if ball is quickly recovered) 3. Other Detectable Infractions: a. Runner ruled not down. b. Runner ruled down (when ball carrier is judged down by rule and the ball is fumbled, play may be reviewed if recovery of ball occurs in the immediate action following fumble and is prior to any official signaling ball is dead. Also reviewable when runner is ruled out of bounds near goal line.) c. Forward progress with respect to first down d. Touching of a kick e. Number of players on field f. Clock adjustments (in conjunction with overturned plays) g. Fourth-down/try fumble plays h. Field Goal Attempts (only when ball is ruled below or above the crossbar, inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights.) Not Reviewable 1. Fighting participants 7. Face mask 2. Off-sides/Encroachment 8. Taunting 3. Pass interference 9. Illegal blocks 4. Roughing passer/kicker 10. Holding 5. Illegal formations 11. Personal fouls 6. Taunting/excessive celebrations THE PROCESS Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with a DVSport Digital Replay System. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official is selected and assigned by the Conference Office. A live video feed is sent directly to the replay booth. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while capturing/digitizing it into the DVSport Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play as well as any replays as they occur in real time. SEC FOOTBALL VIDEO REPLAY Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Communicator. As the Technician marks the incoming video, each view (by mark) will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Communicator can touch/click on a thumbnail and immediately send that play/replay to the Replay Official. With the Communicator s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a remote device controlled by the Replay Official. All replays/video are viewed on an output monitor. The touch screen is only used to select the replays. While most plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system. THE EQUIPMENT Each SEC member institution uses the Digital Replay System developed by DVSport of Pittsburgh, Pa. The replay systems are maintained by the home institution with technical support from DVSport. BCS #1 vs. BCS #2 ABC [All Times Eastern and Subjet to Change] The Southeastern Conference has agreements to send nine of its member institutions to postseason bowl games following the 2009 season. The winner of the SEC Championship Game will automatically participate in the Bowl Championship Series comprised of the Sugar, Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls. The Capital One (2nd), will then make its pick following the BCS selections. The bowl must select the team with the next best overall record or a team that is within one win of the team with the next best overall record. The Outback, Chick-fil-A and AT&T Cotton Bowls will work with the conference office to determine picks 3-5. The Cotton Bowl has the first preference of teams from the Western Division and the Outback Bowl has first preference of teams from the Eastern Division. The Cotton or Outback Bowl can select teams outside of its divisional preference, but must not select them before the opposite bowl selects from its divisional preference. The Chick-fil-A Bowl has the selection of preference following the Cotton and Outback Bowls. In selections 6-7, the AutoZone Liberty and Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowls will make their selections, not in any specific order, but in consultation with the SEC Office. The Bowls will rank available qualified teams in order of preference. If there are no similarities in the order of selection, the bowls will be granted its selection. If the bowls rank the same teams in preference, the team involved in the process would get its preference of which bowl to participate. The PetroSun Independence Bowl will receive the eighth selection and the Papajohns.com Bowl will have the ninth pick of available SEC teams. SEC BOWL AGREEMENTS BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES The Bowl Championships Series is a five-game arrangement for post-season college football that is designed to match the two top-rated teams in a national championship game and to create exciting and competitive match-ups among eight other highly regarded teams in four other games. The five bowl games are the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the FedEx Orange Bowl, the Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi, the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the BCS National Championship Game that is played at one of the bowl sites. The 2010 Citi BCS National Championship Game will be played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Unless a Southeastern Conference champion qualifies to play in the BCS National Championshp Game, it will play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Fox Sports will televise the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl and the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the conclusion of the 2009 regular season. ESPN/ABC will televise the Rose Bowl presented by Citi and the Citi BCS National Championship Game. In the 11 previous years of the BCS, the Southeastern Conference holds a 12-5 mark in BCS games (.706) - the most wins of any other conference and the highest winning percentage of any conference participating in more than two BCS games. In BCS National Championship Games, the SEC is 5-0 (1.000) and has more BCS titles than any other conference. The SEC has won BCS crowns in 1998 (Tennessee), 2003 (LSU), 2006 (Florida), 2007 (LSU) and 2008 (Florida). The SEC Academic Network is being established by the SEC in partnership with ESPN and the member universities. The Academic Network, developed using technology and coordination from ESPN Digital Media and Origin Digital, will feature content from every institution ranging from research, innovation and economic development to community partnerships, civic engagement and service. Our commitment to highlight the accomplishments of SEC member institution s academic programs was a key component of our new television agreements, said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. We are grateful to ESPN for providing the technology, expertise and tools they use in sports media to our institutions in support of academic pursuits. Each institution has its own page on the website that includes videos categorized by topic. Alumni, fans and students worldwide will have the ability to learn more about SEC academics in one place through video features that are posted by the league institutions. The Academic Network is a component of the SEC s 15-year television package with ESPN, which is the most comprehensive in the history of intercollegiate athletics. Also part of ESPN s commitment to SEC academic programs is the production of an annual Campus Connection telecast at each SEC institution, in which students take part in the production; telecasts of two programs annually dedicated to the academic accomplishments of SEC student-athletes; a weekly academic feature segment on ESPNU s SEC show; and selection of one undergraduate student from every SEC institution to participate in ESPN s summer internship program. SEC SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT The SEC has developed a sportsmanship statement for its institutions to follow. It states: Coaches and student-athletes of a member insititution, as well as individuals employed by or associated with that institution, including alumni, fans, patrons and boosters, shall conduct themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. Their behavior shall at all times reflect the high standards of honor and dignity that characterize participation in the collegiate setting. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, coaches, student-athletes and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifested not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program. It is the responsibility of each member institution to establish policies for sportsmanship and ethical conduct in intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational mission and goals of the institution. Furthermore, member institutions are responsible for educating on a continuing basis all constituencies about these policies.

He ran his streak to six straight as he made his only attempt vs. Florida Atlantic, a 41-yarder in the first quarter. The Tiger defense stole the show in 2001, holding Ball State to 92 yards of offense while not allowing the Cardinals past midfield the entire game...auburn has never lost to any current members of the Mid-American Conference, but the Tigers have only played six times previously against MAC schools. ARIZONA STATE at GEORGIA 7 p.m. ET Athens, Ga. Sanford Stadium (92,746) Overall: 2-0 LIVE TV: ESPNU [Eric Collins, play-by-play; Brock Huard, color analyst] Overall: 2-1 SEC: 2-0 XM: 200 Sirius: 219 THE COACHES Dennis Erickson is in his third season at Arizona State with a record of (.630) and in his 21st season overall with a record of (.687). Rich Olson serves as the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator is Craig Bray. Mark Richt is in his ninth season at Georgia and overall with a record of (.785). The Bulldogs offensive coordinator is Mike Bobo and the defensive coordinators are Willie Martinez and John Jancek. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN ARIZONA STATE HAS THE BALL Danny Sullivan has turned in two solid performances in his first two collegiate starts so far this season. Against the Warhawks, Sullivan threw for a career high 220 yards. His previous high prior to this season was 118, which he set against Texas in the 2007 Holiday Bowl. Sullivan also threw his fourth career touchdown pass and ran for his first ever score. Dimitri Nance added two touchdowns of his own on the ground to go along with his 82 yards last week for ASU. Junior WLB Rennie Curran leads the SEC with 34 tackles in three games. He is the top returning tackler in the SEC after recording 115 stops in Curran matched his career high with 15 tackles against USC in 2009 and had the game-winning pass breakup in the game s final seconds. Geno Atkins anchors Georgia s defensive tackles with 21 consecutive starts. Georgia s rushing defense has forced teams to the air and the Razorbacks touched the Bulldogs for 408 passing yards and five TDs. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN GEORGIA HAS THE BALL Senior linebacker Mike Nixon intercepted three passes, returned one for a touchdown, blocked a punt and recorded four tackles, including one for loss in the seasonopener. Now in his fourth season in maroon and gold, Nixon went the first 30 games of his career without an interception, but since picking off his first career pass at Cal last season, he has intercepted eight passes in his last 10 games. Dexter Davis is the only returning player in the nation who has recorded double-digit sacks in each of the past two seasons (10.5 in 2007 and 11 in 2008). He also has started 40 of a possible 40 games in his Sun Devil career. Senior Joe Cox tied the school record with five touchdown passes against Arkansas while passing for a career-high 375 yards. Cox was 18-of-25 on the night (72 percent). Against the Razorbacks, A.J. Green registered his third career 100-yard receiving game after hauling in seven catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Richard Samuel rushed for a career-high 104 yards at Arkansas, including an 80-yard TD run early in the second quarter. It was the longest rushing TD for a Bulldog in an SEC game since Robert Edwards had an 80 yarder against Kentucky (1997). SPECIAL TEAMS When Omar Bolden took the opening kickoff 89-yards for a touchdown against ULM, he became the first ASU player to ever return the game's opening kickoff for a score. It was the 13th kickoff return touchdown in ASU history and the first since Rudy Burgess took one back 98-yards against USC in Freshman kicker Bobby Wenzig was expected to redshirt in 2009, but that all changed when he was forced into emergency action against ULM. With Thomas Weber out, Wenzig filled in admirably, going 5-5 on PATs and 1-1 on field goals in his collegiate debut. Bulldog sophomore Blair Walsh drilled a career-long 53-yard field goal at #9 OSU. This was the longest FG for the Bulldogs since Brandon Coutu connected on a 55 yarder against UAB in With the graduation of Brian Mimbs, redshirt sophomore Drew Butler took over the punting duties and has done a stellar job. Butler is averaging an NCAA-leading 54.6 yards on 11 punts. SERIES/GAME NOTES Record: UG, 1-0 Last: UG, (2008 at Tempe) In their only meeting in history, #3 Georgia topped unranked Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz...Bulldog tailback Knowshon Moreno, the 12th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, shredded the Sun Devils for 149 yards rushing and two touchdowns... Georgia also showed the nation its aerial capabilities as freshman A.J. Green exploded for 159 yards receiving and a score on eight catches...georgia is against schools from the PAC In 2009, Georgia will play three non-conference games against teams from BCS conferences, becoming the first from the SEC to do that since the 12th game was added in 2006.
