4 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK NOV. 3, 2008 BIG SOUTH TELEVISION PACKAGE RESUMES SATURDAY The 2008 Big South Television package resumes Saturday, Nov. 8 with Coastal Carolina at Gardner- Webb live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) at 3:30pm, with a tape-delay airing later that night on SportSouth at 7:00pm. MATT HOGUE (play-by-play) and RENE NADEAU (analyst) will call the action. MASN will also air the Nov. 15 VMI at Stony Brook tilt. PRESBYTERIAN SCORES HISTORICAL UPSET Presbyterian defeated No. 17 Liberty Saturday, its first-ever win over a nationally-ranked NCAA Division I FCS program. The loss snapped the Flames Big South-record five-game road winning streak. The game was not an official Conference game since Presbyterian is not playing a complete League slate in The victory was the first for the Blue Hose over a Big South team in 2008 and PC is now 3-3 against Big South teams over the last two seasons. JENNINGS NEARING LEAGUE S ALL-TIME RUSHING RECORD Liberty RB RASHAD JENNINGS surpassed VMI s SEAN MIZZER (3,223) for second-place all-time on the Big South s career rushing yards list over the weekend. Jennings now stands at 3,321 and needs 89 yards to break DRE BARNES all-time mark of 3,409. Meanwhile, Jennings season total of 1,188 is fourth-highest in a campaign and 159 yards from equaling the single-season record of 1,347, which was set by Barnes in MMMM, GOOD Gardner-Webb QB DEVIN CAMPBELL is the first player in Big South history to compile 400 yards of total offense in consecutive games, let alone the first with two 400-yard total offense games in a season. In Week 9, Campbell finished with 409 total offensive yards against VMI, and followed that up with exactly 400 this past Saturday at Stony Brook. COAT OF ARMS Gardner-Webb s DEVIN CAMPBELL and Presbyterian s BRANDON MILEY became just the second and third players in Big South history to pass for 300 yards in back-to-back games. Campbell threw for 392 yards in Week 9 vs. VMI and 394 this past weekend at Stony Brook -- the first in League history with consecutive games over 390 yards. Miley had 331 passing yards against Gardner-Webb in Week 8 on Oct. 18, and following PC s bye week on Oct. 25, totaled 301 passing yards in the Blue Hose s upset win over Liberty. AND THE FIRST PLAYER WAS... Former Coastal Carolina QB TYLER THIGPEN owns the Big South record for consecutive games with 300 passing yards at three games. In 2006, Thigpen threw for 306 yards at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 11, 325 against Charleston Southern on Nov. 18 and 351 yards in the Chanticleers playoff game at Appalachian State on Nov. 25. Thigpen also owns the record for most 300-yard passing games in one season (5). LIBERTY S CONFERENCE GAMES WIN STREAK STILL INTACT Liberty s nine-game Conference game win streak is still intact, as the loss against Presbyterian is not an official League contest this season. The Flames have scored at least 30 points in each game and is averaging 42.3 points, while holding its League brethren to 17.6 points. The Flames also have won four of those nine games on the road. CENTURY MAN Liberty RB RASHAD JENNINGS has rushed for 100 yards in a Big South-record nine consecutive games, dating back to last season. The previous high was seven consecutive games set by Liberty s EUGENE GOODMAN from Nov. 15, 2003 to Oct. 2, Jennings has recorded 20 career 100-yard rushing games with the Flames, setting the all-time Conference record and surpassing DRE BARNES previous record of 17 in Week 8. COLLINS CATCHES UP Gardner-Webb WR DOBSON COLLINS, who became the 13th player in Big South history with 100 career receptions in Week 7 at Georgia Tech, is now tied for 7th in Conference annals with 127. He needs 11 catches for sixth-place in history. In his last six games, Collins is averaging 7.5 receptions a contest and 93.7 receiving yards to move into first in the League with 60 receptions and second with 723 yards. BOLTEN BOLDEN Liberty WR DOMINIC BOLDEN is just the third player in Big South history to amass 100 receiving yards in three consecutive games, and the first since former Charleston Southern receiver MAURICE PRICE did it in a Big South-record four-straight games in Former Gardner-Webb wideout WILLIAM ANDREWS JR. was the first player with three consecutive 100-yard receiving games in BIG SOUTH VS. 5 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK NOV. 3, 2008 MORE ON BOLDEN Liberty WR DOMINIC BOLDEN is 171 receiving yards away from becoming the fourth player in Big South history with 1,000 receiving yards in a season. His Big South-leading 829 receiving yards this season rank seventh-highest in a single-season in League annals. Meanwhile, Bolden has a Conference-best eight TD catches and is two touchdown receptions away from becoming the fifth player with 10 in a season. No Liberty player has ever led the Conference in receiving yards or touchdown receptions. DYNAMIC DUO Stony Brook running backs EDWIN GOWINS and CONTE CUTTINO rushed for 100 yards in the same game for the second time this season, as Gowins totaled 185 this past Saturday against Gardner- Webb while Cuttino gained 145 vs. the Bulldogs. The last time the Big South had two teammates rush for 100 yards in a game twice in the same season was in 2004, when Liberty did it six times that year. THREE-PEAT Liberty RB RASHAD JENNINGS leads the Big South in rushing with 1,188 yards, and is the first player in Big South history with three 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Jennings is looking to finish as the League s rushing leader for the first time in his career, and he has fallen short the past two seasons by a combined 11 yards. MMM, GOOD In his past four games, Gardner-Webb QB DEVIN CAMPBELL has gone an impressive 87-of-123 passing ( =70.7 percent) for 1,095 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions, in addition to a passing efficiency rating. In his three starts this year, Gardner-Webb is 3-0 and is averaging yards offensively and 38.3 points per game. TWO ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM The Big South Conference season has seen two different types of outcomes this year. In the 10 League games played thus far, six have been decided by seven points-or-less (3.5 average), while three have been decided by an average of 34 points, and no less than 27 points. The most Big South games decided by seven points-or-less in a season is seven in MAYPRAY CLOSING IN ON ANOTHER FIRST VMI QB TIM MAYPRAY is 121 rushing yards shy of becoming the first quarterback in Big South history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He broke the single-season quarterback rushing record of 656 yards in Week 7. RECORD-SETTING FRESHMAN Stony Brook true freshman running back EDWIN GOWINS is third in the Big South with 782 rushing yards, which is a Big South record for most rushing yards by a TRUE freshman. Liberty s ZACH TER- RELL held the previous mark of 668 yards as a true frosh in In 2003, Coastal Carolina s AUN- DRES PERKINS rushed for 863 yards as a redshirt-freshman for the the Chanticleers. OF THE PEOPLES, BY THE PEOPLES, FOR THE PEOPLES Gardner-Webb RB PHILIP PEOPLES became the 22nd player in Big South history to reach 1,000 career rushing yards when he reached the milestone in Week 9 against VMI. His career total stands at 1,074. STEVENSON BECOMES BIG SOUTH CAREER LEADER IN KICKOFF RETURN YARDS Charleston Southern s GERALD STEVENSON collected 119 kickoff return yards during Week 9 at Liberty to surpass Liberty s DOMINIC BOLDEN as the Big South s career leader in kickoff return yards. Stevenson s career total stands at 1,363, ahead of Bolden s 1,303. Stevenson leads the Big South with 812 kickoff return yards this year, which is already the fourth-highest single season total in League history. Stevenson needs three kickoff returns to tie the Big South career record of 60, set by Liberty s ADRIAN HALL from FLAMES REMAIN IN NATIONAL POLLS Despite their second setback in three games, the Liberty Flames still find themselves in the two national rankings this week. Liberty is No. 25 in both The Sports Network poll and in the FCS Coaches Poll, marking the ninth-straight week that Liberty has been ranked, extending its school record. Liberty entered the national Top 25 the week of Sept. 8 for the first time since 1998, when the Flames were ranked tied for No. 24 with Troy State in the Aug. 31, 1998 preseason ESPN/USA Today Division I-AA poll. 6 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK NOV. 3, 2008 YARD MARKERS For the third time this season, two Big South teams combined for 1,000 yards of total offense in a game. This past weekend, Stony Brook (525) and Gardner-Webb (480) combined for 1,005 total offensive yards. It was Gardner-Webb s second combined 1,000-yard game, as the Bulldogs (514) and Presbyterian (492) combined for 1,006 yards on Oct. 18. Earlier this season on Oct. 4, Coastal Carolina (534) and Liberty (531) combined for a Conference game record 1,065 yards. SECOND-AND-TEN Walter Payton Award candidate RASHAD JENNINGS has scored 15 touchdowns this season (13 rushing and two receiving), and is just two TDs away from tying his Big South season record of 17, which was set last year. Jennings is the second player in Big South history with three 10-touchdown seasons, and is the third in history with 42 career trips to the end zone. Coastal Carolina s AUNDRES PERKINS is the Big South s career touchdown leader with 47, followed by JEROME SIMPSON with Gardner-Webb s DOBSON COLLINS is the fourth player in Big South history with back-to-back 50 reception seasons. He joins former teammate DUVAUGHN FLAGLER (three times), VMI s ZOHN BUR- DEN (two) and Charleston Southern s MAURICE PRICE (two) with consecutive seasons with 50 catches. Collins 60 receptions this year are a career-high and ninth-most in a season in Big South history. TEETER-TOTER Gardner-Webb s DOBSON COLLINS and Liberty s DOMINIC BOLDEN each surpassed the 1,000 career receiving yard mark in Week 5, and have been within yards of each other on the all-time list since then. Bolden s 1,554 career yards rank 12th all-time and moved him past Collins, who has 1,531 and stands in 13th. Charleston Southern senior WR MARKUS MURRY moved into 10th-place in League history over the weekend with exactly 1,600 career receiving yards. Former Gardner-Webb receiver AUSTIN GAINES fell to 11th at 1,599. TAKING THEIR TREASURE Gardner-Webb s DOBSON COLLINS leads the Big South with 60 catches and is looking to become the first Bulldog since WILLIAM ANDREWS JR. in 2002 to lead the Big South in receptions. Andrews shared the League lead that season with Charleston Southern s AARON DUNKLIN. Charleston Southern s annual run of producing the top wide receiver in the Big South is in jeopardy this season, as Bucs leading receiver GERALD STEVENSON is currently 27 receptions away from the top spot. Stevenson s 33 catches this season rank ninth in the League. A Charleston Southern receiver has led or shared the Big South lead in receptions every year of Big South football. BIG MAC Coastal Carolina QB ZACH MacDOWALL is closing in on the League s all-time Top 10 in passing yards. He has thrown for 1,564 yards this season, just 367 away from the No. 10 position, which is held by Liberty s BROCK FARREL at 1,931. MacDowall s 12 touchdown passes are also just four away from the all-time leaders. Teammate WILLIAM RICHARDSON is 10th in League history with 16 touchdown passes. POINT OF ORDER Coastal Carolina has scored a point in all 65 games in its history, extending its Big South record for consecutive games with a point. VMI (46) and Liberty (36) also have extended their respective scoring streaks. In addition, Presbyterian has not been shutout in its last 27 games. A CLOSER LOOK AT VMI S SCORING STREAK VMI s 46-game scoring streak is the longest run in the 118-year history of the program. The previous record was a 43-game stretch from Earlier this year, the Keydets scored 30 points in backto-back games for the first time since SPEAKING OF POINTS... 7 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK NOV. 3, 2008 REAL ESTATE BROKERS VMI s TIM MAYPRAY and Liberty teammates RASHAD JENNINGS and DOMINIC BOLDEN are the Big South s active players with more than 3,000 all-purpose yards. Maypray passed DRE BARNES (3,782) this past Saturday for second all-time at 3,797. VMI s SEAN MIZZER is the Big South s career leader at 4,621 all-purpose yards. Jennings is at 3,777 and is just six yards shy of Barnes total. Bolden s career total of 3,180 is sixth all-time. RUNNING FOR A PURPOSE Charleston Southern s GERALD STEVENSON is challenging the Big South single-season record for allpurpose yards. His total of 1,463 is fifth-most in a season, and at his current per game clip of 162.6, he would finish at 1, just short of the record of 1,975, which was established by TIM MAYPRAY last season. Stevenson would need to average all-purpose yards in the final three games to break the mark. NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING IN A RUSH VMI s season rush average of yards per game continues to lead the Big South and is second in the nation. The Keydets are well ahead of their Big South record of rushing yards per game set last season, and need 417 team rushing yards to break their League record of 3,115 yards established in VMI is on pace for 3,711 rushing yards this season. PLAYING WITH FIRE Through three League games, Liberty has allowed 38 points (all vs. Coastal Carolina) and has two shutouts. The Big South record for fewest points allowed in a Conference season is 59, set by Gardner- Webb during a four-game League schedule in Liberty s 12.7 scoring defense average in Big South games this season is pacing ahead of the League record of 14.8, which is held by the 2003 Gardner-Webb Runnin Bulldogs. CUTTING THROUGH THE CLUTTER Stony Brook junior CONTE CUTTINO surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards on his third carry of the game in Week 8 vs. Charleston Southern. He recorded his career-best third consecutive 100-yard rushing game of the season with 145 yards vs. Gardner-Webb to move into second-place all-time at Stony Brook with 2,372 rushing yards. Cuttino, who has 10 career 100-yard rushing games, is fourth in the Big South in rushing this season with 757 yards. IF THERE S A WILL, THERE S A WAY Gardner-Webb sophomore LB JEFFREY WILLIAMS has recorded 46 tackles in his last three games, pushing his season total to a Big South-leading 90. He is looking to become the first Gardner-Webb player to lead the Big South in tackles since MARIO WILLIAMS in 2002 (120). In 20 career games, Williams has 210 career tackles, a 10.5 per game career average. THIRD BROCK FROM THE SUN Liberty QB BROCK SMITH is 298 passing yards away from moving into third-place on the Big South s career passing yards list. He stands at 6,301 and is chasing former Coastal Carolina QB TYLER THIG- PEN, who had 6,598 passing yards during his career. Smith also needs two touchdown passes to tie NICK ROBERTS for third-place with 48. Smith ranks fourth all-time in pass attempts (744), fourth in completions (443), fourth in TD passes (46) and fourth in total offense (6,401). THREE S COMPANY Liberty is 3-0 in the Big South for the just the second time. The Flames opened the 2007 League slate 3-0 en route to a perfect 4-0 Conference record. Every team that has started Big South play 3-0 has gone on to win the Conference championship (2005 co-champion Charleston Southern opened 0-1). GOLDEN GATES BRIDGE Gardner-Webb freshman kicker RYAN GATES leads the Big South with 13 field goals made, which is a freshman record and fourth-most in a single-season in League history. Gates is four makes away from tying the season record of 17, set by VMI s MATT SHARPE in Gates has made two field goals in a game five times this season, and has made five field goals from 40 yards-or-longer. ZERO TOLERANCE Liberty blanked Charleston Southern 42-0 in Week 9, marking its second consecutive shutout of a Big South opponent this season. It is the first time in League history that a member has recorded two shutouts during the Conference season, let alone consecutively. In fact, Liberty has shutout three of its last four League opponents, dating back to last year s 31-0 win over Gardner-Webb in the season finale. The Flames have recorded a League-best six shutouts since Big South football began in BIG SOUTH IN THE NCAA STATISTICS The following individuals rank in the top 50 in the NCAA football statistical report following Week 10: OFFENSE Scoring 3.
