4 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK SEPT. 22, 2008 LIBERTY LOOKING TO EXTEND STREAK Liberty, which is 3-0 for the first time in head coach DANNY ROCCO s three seasons, is looking to start 4-0 for the first time since opening the 1997 season at 4-0. The Flames face a tough task this Saturday at traditional FCS power Youngstown State, which is ranked No. 23 this week in the FCS Coaches Poll and holds the No. 27 position in The Sports Network ranking. The last time a Big South member started 4-0 was Charleston Southern in 2006 when the Bucs jumped out to a 9-0 record. IDLE FLAMES STILL AMONG THE TOP 25 The Liberty Flames, which entered the national Top 25 the week of Sept. 8 for the first time since 1998, remains ranked following its open date this past week. The Flames are No. 25 in the The Sports Network poll, and fell to No. 26 in the FCS Coaches Poll after debuting in the coaches ranking last week at No. 25. Prior to this season, Liberty s previous national ranking came in the Aug. 31, 1998 preseason ESPN/USA Today Division I-AA poll, as the Flames were ranked tied for No. 24 with Troy State. OCEANOGRAPHY With its 31-3 victory over Towson this past Saturday, Coastal Carolina limited its second-straight opponent to less than 10 points, a first in the program s six-year history. Last week the Chanticleers held Monmouth to seven points. Coastal Carolina is the second team in Big South history to hold two-straight opponents to under 10 points, joining the 2006 Liberty Flames. VMI RUNS WILD IN RECORD-BREAKING WIN VMI rushed for a Big South single-game record 517 yards in its victory over Chowan this past Saturday. The Keydets are the first Big South squad to rush for 500 yards in a game, and eclipsed the old record of 490 rushing yards, which was set by Coastal Carolina against Chowan last season on Oct. 13. VMI scored seven rushing touchdowns -- tied for second-most in League history, and amassed 659 total yards of offense, the second-highest total in Big South football history. KEYDETS MOVE TO 2-1 VMI is 2-1 for the first time since 2002, and has won two-straight home games for the first time since The Keydets have posted their first 2-0 home start since 1995, when they defeated Liberty and East Tennessee State in succession. In addition, new head coach SPARKY WOODS is the first VMI head coach to go 2-1 to begin his career at the school since A.W. SLICK MORTON did so in KEYDET KICKS VMI s 69 points in its win over Chowan is tied for third-highest all-time in Big South history, and matched the VMI single-game record for most points scored, which was first established on Sept. 25, 1982 when the Keydets blanked Central Florida, The Keydets 10 touchdowns Saturday also equaled the Conference record of 10, which was set by Coastal Carolina in 2005 and matched by Liberty in It was the first time in 18 years that VMI scored 60 points in a game, the last being Oct. 20, 1990 vs. West Virginia Tech (66 points). Meanwhile, VMI has scored at least 40 points in back-to-back home games for the first time since 2003 when the Keydets scored 42 against Georgetown on Sept. 27 and 50 vs. Charleston Southern in its next home game on Oct. 11. ANOTHER FIRST FOR MAYPRAY VMI s TIM MAYPRAY became the first player in Big South history to throw a 70-yard touchdown pass and score a 60-yard rushing touchdown in the same game when he accomplished the feat this past Saturday vs. Chowan. Maypray opened the game with a 74-yard scoring strike to DAUD SEMALULU. At the beginning of the second quarter, Maypray took the snap from center and raced 60 yards for a touchdown -- his 10th straight game with a TD. HAVE YOU DRIVEN A FORD LATELY? Coastal Carolina senior RB JAMIE FORDHAM became the 20th player in Big South history with 1,000 rushing yards when he reached the milestone in the Chanticleers win over Towson. Fordham s career total stands at 1,020 yards, and he is the fifth player in school history over the 1,000-yard rushing mark, joining TYLER THIGPEN (1,638), MIKE TOLBERT (1,670), PATRICK HALL (2,214) and AUNDRES PERKINS (2,343). MAYPRAY NEXT TO ECLIPSE 1,000 RUSHING YARDS VMI all-everything back TIM MAYPRAY is six rushing yards shy of 1,000 in his career. The junior has rushed for 994 yards during his time at VMI. He needs 129 receiving yards to become the first player in Big South history with 1,000 career rushing yards and 1,000 career receiving yards. BIG SOUTH VS. 5 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK SEPT. 22, 2008 TV GUIDE Big South football returns to the small screen this weekend and will make its first-ever appearance on the Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network, as Stony Brook s home game against Hofstra will be televised live on Friday night at 7:00pm. TV GUIDE UPDATE MASN s broadcast of the Nov. 8 Coastal Carolina at Gardner-Webb at 3:30pm will be aired on same day tape delay on SportSouth beginning at 7:00pm. MORE ON MAYPRAY VMI QB TIM MAYPRAY is second in the Big South with 323 rushing yards -- already the 10th-highest single-season rushing total by a quarterback in League history. The Big South record for most rushing yards by a quarterback is 656 yards, set by Coastal Carolina s TYLER THIGPEN in No quarterback has ever led the League in rushing. A GAME OF LEAP FROG Liberty RB RASHAD JENNINGS moved into third-place all-time in Big South history in career rushing in Week 3, jumping back ahead of teammate ZACH TERRELL and also passing Coastal Carolina s AUNDRES PERKINS. Jennings owns sole possession of third-place with 2,349 career rushing yards, just ahead of Perkins 2,343. Terrell fell back into fifth-place with 2,335 yards and is eight yards away from Perkins. Jennings needs 651 yards to become the third player in Big South history with 3,000. POINT OF ORDER Coastal Carolina has scored a point in all 60 games in its history, extending its Big South record for consecutive games with a point. Charleston Southern has not been shutout in its last 34 games, while VMI (41) and Liberty (30) also have extended their respective streaks. Meanwhile, Presbyterian has not been shutout in its last 22 games, while Stony Brook has cracked the scoreboard in its last eight contests. A CLOSER LOOK AT VMI S SCORING STREAK VMI s 41-game scoring streak is the second-longest run in the 118-year history of the program, trailing only a 43-game stretch from NORM!! Coastal Carolina redshirt-senior MARRIO NORMAN intercepted his 11th career pass at Monmouth in Week 3 and moved into sole possession of second-place on the Big South s all-time interception list. He was tied with former teammate DEWITT MYERS at 10. The League s career record is 17, held by current Carolina Panther and former Chanticleer QUINTON TEAL. DOG DAYS Gardner-Webb is just the second team in Big South history to hold three-straight opponents under 100 yards rushing, as the Bulldogs have permitted 63, 6 and 98 rushing yards in their first three games, respectively. In 2005, Coastal Carolina held three consecutive opponents (VMI, Savannah State, Mansfield) to less than 100 rushing yards. The Bulldogs rank first in the Big South in rush defense at 55.7, good for 10th in the nation. HALL PASS Gardner-Webb sophomore RB PATRICK HALL is the first Bulldogs player to score two rushing touchdowns in consecutive games since JERMAINE BOSTON in Boston rushed for two scores in the 2005 season opener against Union, Sept. 3, then scored three rushing touchdowns the next game against Belhaven, Sept. 10. Hall is tied for the Big South lead with four rushing touchdowns, already surpassing his total from last year (3). RUNNIN AWAY FROM HOME Gardner-Webb s victory at Austin Peay in Week 3 was its first non-conference road win since Sept. 2, 2006 at Jacksonville, when the Runnin Bulldogs defeated the Dolphins, in the season opener. In addition, GWU has scored 30 points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2006, when the Bulldogs scored 49 against Jacksonville and 30 vs. Tennessee Tech the following week on Sept. 9. Maypray needs 434 all-purpose yards to catch DUVAUGHN FLAGLER for third-place at 3,614.

6 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK SEPT. 22, 2008 END OF THE LINE Liberty senior RB ZACH TERRELL saw his Big South-record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown end at 18 games in Week 3 at Western Carolina. He scored 23 touchdowns during his streak and moved into second all-time in Big South history with 28 rushing TDs. Terrell started his streak Oct. 14, 2006 with two scores vs. William & Mary. MURRY HITS CENTURY MARK(US) Charleston Southern WR MARKUS MURRY caught six passes at Miami (Ohio) in Week 3 to increase his career total to 102 and become the 12th player in Big South history with 100 career receptions. Murry needs seven catches to tie VMI s GARY PRICE for 11th place with 109. Meanwhile, Murry stands 35 receiving yards away from 1,500 and needs 134 yards to reach the League s all-time top 10. FLAMES BURNING IT UP Liberty s win at Western Carolina in Week 3 was its first non-conference road win since winning 28-0 at Savannah State on Sept. 23, It also was the Flames eighth consecutive victory, dating back to last season, and is tied for the second-longest winning streak among FCS programs. Dayton is the current FCS leader with 10-straight wins. The Flames eight-game winning streak is the program s longest since reeling off 10 consecutive wins during the seasons. USHERING IN A NEW SKILL Coastal Carolina redshirt-senior TRENT USHER has asserted himself as one of the Chanticleers primary receivers after four games. He has team highs of 14 receptions for 225 yards and two touchdowns on the year, including career bests of five catches and 80 yards in the Chanticleers win at Monmouth in Week 3. Not bad for a player who has been at three positions (wide receiver, defensive back and quarterback) during his college career. IT S BEEN A WHILE Liberty s three-point win over Western Carolina in Week 3 was its smallest margin of victory since Nov. 13, 2004, when the Flames defeated Chattanooga, Prior to the win at Western, Liberty s average margin of victory in its 18 wins since the Chattanooga game was 25.4 points. Just one victory in that span was decided by single digits -- a six-point win at VMI on Nov. 18, 2006 (38-32). A GOOD OPTION VMI s TIM MAYPRAY is the second player in Big South history to have a 50-yard run in three-straight games. He has opened the season with touchdown runs of 52 yards against St. Francis (Pa.), 64 yards at William & Mary and 60 yards vs. Chowan. In 2004, Coastal Carolina PATRICK HALL closed out the season with a 70-yard TD run vs. Savannah State (Nov. 6), at 50-yard scamper vs. Jacksonville (Nov. 13) and a 68-yard score vs. Charleston Southern (Nov. 20). THE BUTLER DID IT Presbyterian WR TERRANCE BUTLER is looking to end Charleston Southern s run of producing the top wide receiver in the Conference. Butler leads the Big South in the three main receiving categories: receptions (24), receiving yards (317) and TD catches (4). A Charleston Southern receiver has led or shared the Big South lead in receptions every year of Big South football. No Buccaneer is currently in the League s top 10 thus far. A FRESH FACE Stony Brook freshman RB EDWIN GOWINS currently leads the Big South with 335 rushing yards through four games. Already the first freshman in Big South history to rush for 100 yards in back-to-back games (147 in the season opener vs. Colgate and 122 yards in Week 2 vs. Elon), Gowins is the first player in Big South history with 100 rushing yards in each of this first two games to start a career. No freshman has ever led the Conference in rushing. FROM COAST TO COAST Coastal Carolina s 26-7 win Monmouth in Week 3 was its first non-conference road victory since winning at Winston-Salem State on Sept. 30, 2006, snapping a five-game losing streak in non-conference away games. Meanwhile, Smith is fifth all-time in Big South history with 4,937 passing yards, and needs 63 to become the fifth QB in League history with 5,000. He also ranks fifth in pass attempts (582), fifth in completions (342), fourth in TD passes (36) and fifth in total offense (5,032).

7 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK SEPT. 22, 2008 ONE SCORING STREAK ENDS, ANOTHER SCORING STREAK CONTINUES Liberty s Big South record of nine-straight games with at least 30 points scored ended at Western Carolina in Week 3. The streak began Sept. 29, 2007 against St. Francis (Pa.), and during that ninegame span, the Flames surpassed 40 points five times. Meanwhile, Liberty has cracked the scoreboard in the first quarter in 10 consecutive games. WIDE OUTS Three Big South wide receivers are closing in on 1,000 career receiving yards entering Week 5. Gardner-Webb s DOBSON COLLINS stands at 969, Charleston Southern s DEE BROWN is at 949, while Liberty s DOMINIC BOLDEN has 939 to his credit. Whoever reaches the milestone first will be the 16th player in Big South history with 1,000 receiving yards. WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE The Liberty Flames have won 10 consecutive home games, which is currently tied with Dayton for the second-longest home winning streak in FCS. San Diego has won 26-straight home games to lead the nation. Liberty s 10-game home winning streak is the third-longest in Big South history, and two victories away from tying the record of 12 held by Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. The Flames next home game is more than two weeks away -- Oct. 11 vs. League newcomer Stony Brook. BIG SOUTH 1,000-YARD RUSHING CLUB The Big South s 1,000-yard career rushing list stands at 20 members, including five active players with the addition of Coastal Carolina s JAMIE FORDHAM.
