With six career 100-yard rushing games, thompson is tied for ninth in FSU history for 100-yard rushing performances, joining Leon Washington, Sam Platt, Mark Lyles and Jermaine Smith; Thompson has a team-leading 687 rushing yards on 91 carries through eight games and is on pace to become FSU s first 1,000-yard rusher since all-time rushing leader Warrick Dunn in 1996 (1,180); Thompson is averaging 7.54 yards per carry, which is ahead of Dunn s single-season school record pace of 7.48, established in Thompson 100-yard rushing games Yards Opponent Date 196 Wake Forest Sept. 15, Miami Oct. 9, South Carolina Dec. 31, NC State Oct. 7, Brigham Young Sept. 18, Clemson Sept. 22, 2012 CT chasing greatness Thompson authored one of the most compelling stories in Seminole history when he ran for 197 yards on nine carries in FSU s 52-0 shutout win over Wake Forest. In 2011, Thompson suffered two broken vertebrae in his back against the Demon Deacons, which threatened to end his career. With TD runs of 74 and 80 yards, the Greenville, Fla. native showed he was clearly back to 2010 form, when he led the Noles in rushing... He followed up his breakout Wake Forest game with 103 rushing yards on 15 carries in FSU s win over then-no. 10 Clemson; His 141 yards on 25 carries - matching his career high in totes - at NC State was the second-highest total by an FSU back in 33 meetings with the Wolfpack; Eight games into his final season, Thompson has amassed 1,735 career rushing yards on 277 carries; With 47 yards on seven carries at Miami, Thompson moved into 15th place on FSU s all-time rushing list, passing Tom Bailey; His 6.26 career yards per carry average ranks third all-time among Seminoles with at least 200 carries. Only Dunn (6.88) and Roosevelt Snipes (6.46) boast better averages. CT the Home run threat Big plays in the running game have been a staple throughout Thompson s career with the Seminoles... Thompson has seven runs in excess of 20 yards this season and four catches over 20 yards, including a 32-yard grab-anddash which led to the game-tying touchdown at Miami; He is also responsible for three of the four-longest touchdown plays from scrimmage including scoring runs of 80 and 74 and a third from 27 yards out. With touchdown runs of 74 and 80 yards against Wake Forest - on consecutive FSU plays from scrimmage - Thompson now has four of the 19 longest TD runs in school history; His 90-yard TD run at Miami in 2010 ranks third in FSU history, while his 83-yard dash that same year against BYU is tied for seventh.

The Noles scored 49 or more points in four consecutive games, averaged points and yards per game. That s notable on several fronts... Since 1946, the 2012 FSU team is one of only three teams to score 49 or more points in its first four games of the season, joining the 2007 Oklahoma and 1995 Nebraska squads; Only six teams since the end of WWII have longer streaks of games with 49 points or more: Houston (7, 2011), Hawaii (6, 2006), Oklahoma (6, 2008), Michigan (5, ), Miami, Ohio (5, ) and Louisville (5, 2004); The Seminoles are one of 18 teams to have scored 49 points four times in a row, but the only member of the Atlantic Coast Conference to make that claim; In FSU history, the 2012 team s scoring average ranks as the third-highest four-game stretch in school history, behind a pair of over-lapping four-game stretches by the 1995 Noles; The Seminoles yards per game average ranks as the fourth-best four-game stretch in school history, trailing the two stretches by the 1995 squad and one fourgame streak by the 2000 team; This, however, is the first FSU team that has scored 49 or more points in four consecutive games and also the first that can count three games of 600 or more yards in total offense in any four-game run. 7 EJ JOINS CLUB EJ Manuel s magnificent all-around performance versus Clemson on Sept. 22 was truly one for the record books as he became just the second Seminole quarterback ever to eclipse 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in the same game, finishing with career-high marks of 380 yards passing and 102 yards rushing... Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward accomplished the feat once in 1992, passing for 395 yards and rushing for 111 against Maryland in a win over the Terrapins on Nov. 7, 1992 in Tallahassee. Manuel s 482 yards of total offense ranks as the sixth-highest total in FSU history and the most since Chris Weinke compiled 527 yards versus Clemson on Nov. 4, A MANUEL FOR SUCCESS In just his second season as the full-time starter, senior quarterback EJ Manuel isn t likely to finish his career at the top of many Florida State statistical lists. That, however doesn t mean you cannot quantify Manuel s effectiveness numerically. Here are a few numbers and notes that set Manuel apart: Manuel is FSU s career leader for completion percentage. He has completed 490 of 724 attempts 67.7 percent which is significantly ahead of current No. 2 Charlie Ward (62.3); The Virginia Beach, Va. native is currently the all-time ACC leader for career completion percentage, having moved past Virginia s Matt Schaub (67.0) this season; Manuel s completion rate does not come from statpadding via short routes. He is averaging 13.0 yards per completion and 8.8 yards per attempt over the course of his career. Last season seven different Seminoles caught at least one Manuel pass for more than 50 yards, which means he is a threat from all points on the field; Only three FSU quarterbacks Chris Weinke, Chris Rix and Christian Ponder had more wins as a starter entering their senior seasons than Manuel, who had 13. With 29 game appearances through his junior year, Manuel had more career appearances at that juncture than all but Rix; With 20 wins as the starter, Manuel is tied for seventh in school history, while his.800 winning percentage (20-5) is ninth all-time among Noles; He came into the 2012 campaign ranked No. 3 all-time in the Atlantic Coast Conference in career quarterback efficiency with a rating, trailing only Weinke (151.15) and Georgia Tech s Joe Hamilton (148.19); Manuel currently ranks No. 1 in ACC career quarterback efficiency with a rating. EJ AMONG ACC ACTIVE LEADERS In 25 career starts, Manuel ranks highly among the active ACC quarterback statistical leaders no small feat considering 10 of 12 starters returned in Here s how the Virginia Beach, Va. native stacks up: Manuel ranks second among league quarterbacks with 7,135 yards of total offense, trailing only Duke s Sean Renfree (8,004); Ranks second in career passing yards among active starters with 6,377, trailing Renfree (7,941); With yard passing games he is tied for second with Clemson s Tajh Boyd, trailing Renfree; With 38 career touchdown passes, Manuel ranks fifth, trailing Clemson s Tajh Boyd (52), NC State s Mike Glennon (46), Renfree (43) and North Carolina s Bryn Renner (43); Manuel is fifth among ACC quarterbacks on the active list in career touchdown responsibility with 46, which trails Boyd (62), Renfree (51), Georgia Tech s Tevin Washington (50) and Glennon (49). THE ONE AND ONLY EJ Manuel is the only Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) quarterback in the country to have played a significant role in three consecutive bowl victories. He was the Gator Bowl MVP as a redshirt freshman, threw the clinching TD pass in the Chick-fil-A Bowl after Christian Ponder was injured as a sophomore, and guided the Noles past Notre Dame in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl despite playing much of the second half with a broken bone in his leg. It s one of several areas of distinction for Manuel when it comes to producing victories: Manuel is 14-2 over his last 16 starts and 16-3 since assuming taking over as the full-time starter in 2011; A pair of one-point losses to Virginia (2011) and NC State (2012) separate the Noles from a 16-game winning streak, which would lead the nation. Winning by the Manuel Florida State senior quarterback EJ Manuel has put together an impressive resume as a starter, dating back to his redshirt freshman season in The Seminoles are 20-5 with Manuel in the starting lineup, including 12-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference games. 8 MY HOW THEY VE GROWN When FSU offensive line coach Rick Trickett arrived in 2007 he was forced to field a starting unit that was void of depth and woefully undersized. Six seasons later, Trickett boasts the biggest and possibly deepest offensive line segment in Seminole history. Here s a look at weights of the opening day starters and how they have grown over that span. Season LT LG C RG RT Avg. Wt lbs lbs lbs lbs lbs lbs. Wilder delivering in relief Punishing sophomore tailback James Wilder, Jr. has used his 6-foot-2, 226-pound frame quite effectively coming off the bench for the Seminoles this season... He leads the Seminoles with nine touchdowns on the year after powering through the Miami defense for a 17-yard rushing score. He is currently tied for the third-most TD s in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wilder collected the first two touchdown receptions of his career - from 7 and 12 yards out - from EJ Manuel in the 51-7 win over Boston College. That marked the fourth, twotouchdown performance of the season for Wilder; With a pair of 5-yard scoring runs in the win over Clemson, Wilder can claim three twotouchdown rushing performances this season. Wilder opened the season with the first 100-yard rushing game of his career against Murray State (12-106), highlighted by a career-best 42-yard dash. He also added touchdown runs of 9 and 7 yards for the first two-touchdown rushing performance of his career. The Tampa, Fla. native followed up with two more rushing touchdowns against Savannah State, highlighted by a bruising, 19-yard run. Wilder flirted with a second 100-yard performance against Wake Forest, finishing with 94 on a career-high 16 carries. On the year, Wilder has 369 rushing yards on 61 carries (6.0 ypc) and 11 receptions for 67 yards. Pryor Production Senior Lonnie Pryor plays a variety of roles out of the Seminole backfield, from his primary position at fullback, to tailback and third-down back. His value is difficult to quantify in any one category, but his across the board numbers provide an impressive barometer... Pryor ran for a pair of short-yardage touchdowns in Florida State s 51-7 victory over Boston College; Those two scores give him six on the season, which ranks second on the team; Pryor rushed for a career-high 65 yards on seven carries, highlighted by his career-long, 44-yard run in the first half against USF; Pryor s 21 career touchdowns 16 rushing and five receiving lead all active Noles; His 16 career rushing touchdowns tie him for 13th on FSU s all-time list with William McCray and William Floyd, a pair of former Seminole fullbacks; With 126 career points, Pryor is 18 shy of moving into a share of 20th place on FSU s career scoring list; The Okeechobee native s 34 career receptions and 311 career receiving yards leads all current Seminole backs. Rushing TD s come in multiples For the second time this season the Seminoles had a pair of backs rush for two touchdowns each in the win over Clemson. Senior Chris Thompson and sophomore James Wilder, Jr. both found the end zone twice on runs in the triumph. It continues a season-long trend of multiple rushing scores by the Seminoles this season... Lonnie Pryor rushed for a career-high three touchdowns in the season-opening win over Murray State, and Debrale Smiley and Wilder added two rushing touchdowns each for the Noles; The Murray State game marked the first time that three FSU backs rushed for two or more scores in the same game since FSU s 63-7 win over East Carolina in 1980, when Sam Platt, Larry Harris and Ken Burnett had two each; Wilder picked up his second two-touchdown rushing performance in FSU s abbreviated 55-0 win over Savannah State; Thompson had two long scoring runs in FSU s blowout win over Wake Forest; Pryor and Wilder also had two touchdowns each against Boston College - two rushing from Pryor and two receiving from Wilder. Devonta Freeman added two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter in the win over Miami. FLORIDA STATE vs. duke 8 welcome Home devo FSU sophomore tailback Devonta Freeman made the most of the return trip to his hometown of Miami when he helped put the final nail in the Hurricanes coffin. Freeman rushed for two fourth quarter touchdowns as the Seminoles pulled away for a win at Sun Life Stadium; It marked the second consecutive strong performance by the Seminoles 2011 rushing leader. With an expanded role in the past two games, Freeman has rushed for 140 yards on 18 carries (7.8 ypc); The two TD performance against Miami was the third multi-touchdown game of his career, but his first since Nov. 3, 2011 at Boston College; Freeman ranks third on the team in rushing with 287 yards on 41 carries, and his 7.0 ypc average is second only to Chris Thompson s 7.5. Smith: Mr. Reliable Senior wide receiver Rodney Smith continues to demonstrate that he is one of the most reliable and productive pass-catchers for the Seminoles... Smith collected one reception for 11 yards and a first down in the win at Miami, extending his team-leading reception streak to 33 consecutive games against; With his current streak, Smith has a shot at the school record for most consecutive games with a reception, which is 38, held by E.G. Green ( ); Since becoming a mainstay in FSU s offense as a sophomore, Smith has caught at least one pass in 34 of 35 games played; The last time he did not log a reception was Sept. 11, 2010 at Oklahoma; Smith was coming off a career-high nine receptions, good for 108 yards, in FSU s 51-7 victory over Boston College; With 91 receptions, 1,339 yards and 10 touchdowns, Smith needs 16 catches, 256 yards and two touchdowns to move into the top 20 on FSU s career lists. Tight End contributions Since Jimbo Fisher s arrival as offensive coordinator in 2007, the tight end position has become more active in the offensive game plan. That has clearly been the case in Sophomore Nick O Leary, recorded a career-high four receptions in the win at USF and followed up with his first TD reception of the season in the loss at NC State; Junior transfer tight end Kevin Haplea collected his first career TD reception as a Seminole; a 1-yard grab of an EJ Manuel pass which gave the Noles a lead at USF. On the year, FSU s tight ends have 16 receptions for 172 yards and two touchdowns; O Leary leads the segment with 12 receptions for 144 yards and is fast approaching his 2011 season totals (13 receptions, 164 yards). The QB Kids Are All Right Second-team redshirt sophomore quarterback Clint Trickett and third-teamer Jacob Coker have not disappointed during their 2012 appearances in the first three games of the season... Trickett saw his first action since the Wake Forest game (Sept. 15) when he replaced starter EJ Manuel in the fourth quarter against Boston College. He promptly drove the Seminoles 60 yards on eight plays, leading to Dustin Hopkins third field goal of the game; Replacing starter EJ Manuel in the fourth quarter against Wake Forest, Trickett drove the Seminoles to a touchdown on one of two drives. Coker, a redshirt freshman, was impressive in his second half performance against Savannah State, driving the Noles to a touchdown on the only possession in the weathershortened game. His first career touchdown pass a 19-yard strike to Kelvin Benjamin capped a three-play, 17-yard scoring drive for the final points in the 55-0 victory. Collectively, Trickett and Coker have combined to complete 21 of 29 pass attempts for 278 yards, a touchdown this season; In 10 possessions under center this season, Trickett has directed the Seminoles to seven scores: five touchdowns and two field goals; Coker has been even better, converting three of four possessions into touchdowns. SCORING IS WHAT Noles Do Florida State s scoring production in 2012 has a very 1990s look. The Seminoles currently rank seventh nationally in scoring offense, averaging points per game... With its 51-7 win over Boston College, FSU has eclipsed 50 points four times in the first eight games of the season; FSU last scored 50 points four times in a season back in 2000, when it did it five times en route to playing for the national championship against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl; At the current pace, the Seminoles are on track to have their most productive scoring campaign since the 1995 team averaged a school record 48.4 points per game; Florida State is the only FBS team in the country that currently ranks in the top 10 in both scoring offense (7th, 44.38) and scoring defense (5th, 12.63); Not surprisingly, the Noles rank second nationally in average margin of victory at ppg, narrowly trailing top-ranked Alabama (32.71 ppg). The Crimson Tide lead the nation in scoring defense (8.29 ppg), but are 14th in scoring offense (41.0). Oregon is third in scoring margin at ppg.

9 NOTING THE NOLES: DEFENSE FAST STARTS There has been a lot of talk about the FSU defense getting off to slow starts but the numbers, for the most part, don t agree In 60 first half possessions by Seminole opponents, FSU s defense has forced 38 punts (63%). Even more impressive than forcing a punt 63% of the time is the fact the Seminoles have allowed just eight scores on those 60 first half possessions meaning opponents are scoring just 13.3% of the time. The Seminoles have forced 38 punts, four turnovers, three turnovers on downs and had five opponents end the half with the football. Five times this year an FSU opponent has failed to score in the first quarter. stoops-ified Defensive coordinator Mark Stoops has had his Seminole defense dialed in and ranking with the best in the nation the last two years and against Miami, the former Canes assistant coach, once again had his unit stymying another high-powered offense... Miami gained 258 total yards versus the FSU D and rushed for -12 yards in the second half. The last time Miami had fewer yards of total offense was in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl when Wisconsin limited UM to 249 total yards. Dating back to 2009, this is just the sixth time a defense has held UM to less than 300 yards of total offense. FSU s defense held UM to its fewest yards of the season and became just the third team all season to hold the Hurricanes under 400 yards of offense. Miami also rushed for a season-low 29 yards on 21 carries (1.38 yards per carry). It is the fewest rushing yards since UM rushed 21 times for 26 yards against Wake Forest on October 31, solving UM UP FRONT The University of Miami offensive line was the biggest test of the season for FSU s daunting front four The Hurricanes came into the FSU game having allowed nine sacks in seven games and in five of those seven games opponents had one or no sacks versus the UM o-line. After surrendering five sacks to Kansas State, UM had allowed just three sacks in five games before FSU got to Stephen Morris four times. Minus the game versus the Wildcats, FSU equaled the total amount of sacks allowed by UM in six other games. KEY TO SUCCESS There are a lot of theories on what are the most important statistics that equate to winning. The 2012 Seminoles can make a case the biggest is rushing disparity This season FSU is outrushing its opponents 1855 to 553, a 3.35 to 1 difference. The average difference in rushing yards per game is amazing as FSU is plus-163 yards per game. The Seminoles have outrushed their opponents by 200 yards or more twice and by 148 yards or more three other times. FSU has gained more rushing yards than its opponent in all eight games this year. Only four teams in the FBS are averaging more than 150 rushing yards than their opponent and FSU ranks third on that list. RUSH YARDS DISPARITY Team Rush Yds/Gm Rush Yds Allow/Gm Difference GT Oregon FSU Alabama THREE AND DONE The Seminole defense came into the Miami game forcing a nation-leading 47 three-andout series... Following their victory over the Hurricanes, the Seminoles added to their totals with five more three-and-outs to reach a total of 52. The Seminoles lead the nation in forcing three-and-outs at 6.5 a game. Florida State has now forced a three-and-out in 52 of its 107 series played, ranking second in the nation in that category as well at 48.6 % behind only Alabama (49.4%). WERNER-KIND The rise to dominance by German defensive end Bjoern Werner is nothing short of remarkable especially when you consider the Berlin native played just two years of high school football in the US... In just 35 career games, Werner has already amassed 15.5 sacks, 28.5 TFL and 14 passes batted down. Werner has already moved into the top 20 all-time at FSU for TFL in just his third season and just 21 career starts. Versus Murray State, Werner showed off all aspects of his dynamic game with five TFL, four sacks and a pass batted down winning ACC and national accolades for his performance in the opener. His five TFL versus the Racers was one shy of tying a record set 45 years ago. Nobody had more sacks than Werner during the opening weekend of FBS college football. His numbers for sacks and TFL were both single game career highs. Werner is tied for 12th in the nation in sacks. After just eight games in 2012, Werner is already stacking up with the best totals ever compiled for TFL in the first three years of a Seminole career. so close Looking up old records can be a challenge and after looking at a lightly photocopied play-by-play from 1967 Bjoern Werner s five TFL versus Murray State was one short of the single game record of six set by Dale McCullers versus Memphis State in The last player to record more than four TFL in a game was current Detroit Lion Everette Brown who had 4.5 in 2008 versus Maryland. Werner also had the most sacks in a game by an FSU player since Alonzo Jackson recorded four versus Louisville in TFL In First Three Seasons Player (Years) TFL Everette Brown (06-08) 46.5 Darnell Dockett (00-02) 41 Ron Simmons (77-79) 39 Kevin Emmanuel (00-02) 31 Geno Hayes (05-07) 29.5 Bjoern Werner (10-12) 28.5 Markus White (09-10) 28.5 Marvin Jones (90-92) 27 Corey Simon (96-98) 27 Jeff Womble (00-02) 26 Eric Moore (01-03) 25 Travis Johnson (01-03) 24.5 FLORIDA STATE vs. duke 9

10 23.2% opp. 3rd down conv. -- First In THE NCAA In eight games, Florida State has held opponents to just a 23.2 percent (29-125) thirddown conversion rate Included in that staggering number is a 0-15 stretch dating from the second quarter of the Savannah State game to the third quarter of the Wake Forest game. Wake Forest went 1-for-16 on third downs versus FSU. Savannah State went 1-for-10 and Murray State converted 3-of-18. FSU leads the nation in not allowing opponents to convert on third down. FSU DB s VS. THE ACC s BEST The Seminole secondary has taken a back seat at times compared to the vaunted front four and the rushing defense, but this group is establishing itself week-by-week and will face another test with three of the ACCs top pass catchers coming to town The Seminoles have already faced three of the ACC s top eight receivers (yds/game) and held each below their season average in both catches and yards. DeAndre Hopkins (Clem), Alex Amidon (BC) and Phillip Dorsett (UM) combine to average 301 yards per game receiving but against the FSU defense three of the ACC s top receivers totaled just 49 yards. Hopkins, Amidon and Dorsett are in the ACC in receptions per game combining to catch an average of 18.5 passes per game. Versus the Seminoles the three star receivers totaled just 10 receptions. FSU will face three more top receivers in one game Saturday with Conner Vernon and Jamison Crowder who are tied for third in the ACC in receptions per game and Desmond Scott who is fifth. Vernon and Crowder are both in the top six for receiving yards per game as well. No other teams in the nation are allowing fewer than 14 per game. The Seminoles are right near the top due to the fact the defense leads the NCAA in third down conversion percentage. TURNOVER GAME Florida State forced two turnovers against Miami marking the third time in eight games FSU has forced multiple turnovers in a game Overall, the Seminoles currently sit at No. 71 in the nation in takeaways with 11. FSU is forcing an average of TOs a game. That number is down from 2011 (1.77), 2010 (1.92), 2009 (2.08) and 2008 (2.0). Based on a 13 game schedule (including a bowl game), FSU is on pace for 10 interceptions which would be the fewest since the 2008 squad had nine. NO THROW ZONE The Seminole pass defense has held every ACC QB they have faced below his season average for yards. FSU will face another test through the air this weekend when the Seminoles welcome Duke and another top rated QB and set of three of the ACCs top receivers So far in 2012, only four of eight opponents have thrown a passing TD against the FSU defense (Clemson, NC State, BC and Miami). In 2011 the FSU pass defense was ranked 20th in the nation and only held two opponents without a passing TD (UL Monroe and NC State). This year the FSU pass defense is ranked seventh in the nation allowing 157 yards per game. Overall the defense has allowed just eight passing TDs in eight games. END GAME The battle among defensive ends Bjoern Werner and Tank Carradine to lead FSU in sacks has become more of a battle to lead the conference in sacks The pair is tied for first in the ACC in sacks with an average of 1.0/game. You have to go back to 2005 to find the last teammates to finish the year ranked one and two in sacks in the ACC. That year NFL overall first round pick Mario Williams (1) and Wolfpack teammate Manny Lawson (2) accomplished the feat. Carradine and Werner are currently 12th in the NCAA in sacks. Werner and Carradine are the only teammates in the top 20 for sacks in the FBS. not just wide receivers Florida State s defense will face its fifth QB rated in the top five in the ACC in yards per game when Sean Renfree visits Tallahassee Saturday Florida State s defense has held every ACC QB below his season average in yards per game this year. Wake Forest s Tanner Price is averaging yards per game and threw for 82 versus FSU. In his five other games without FSU included, Price averages yards per game, 146 yards more than FSU allowed. Clemson s Taj Boyd is averaging yards per game and threw for 237 versus FSU. In his five other games without FSU included, Boyd averages yards per game, 35 yards more than FSU allowed. NC State s Mike Glennon is averaging 284 yards per game and threw for 259 versus FSU. In his five other games without FSU included, Glennon averages yards per game, 25 yards more than FSU allowed. Boston College s Chase Rettig is averaging yards per game and threw for 122 versus FSU. In his five other games without FSU included, Rettig averages yards per game, 177 yards more than FSU allowed. Miami s Stephen Morris is averaging yards per game and threw for 223 versus FSU. In his five other games without FSU included, Morris averages yards per game, 62 yards more than FSU allowed. FLORIDA STATE vs. duke 10 FILL IN? When FSU lost potential All-American defensive end Brandon Jenkins there were a lot of fans worried about how seriously it would hurt the vaunted Seminole defensive line. Thanks to Cornellius Tank Carradine the loss has been minimalized so far Carradine set a career high for sacks and tackles for loss with 2.5 versus Wake Forest. He added another two sacks versus Clemson as he was the only Seminole to bring Taj Boyd down behind the line on a pass play. Carradine accounted for 1.5 of the two sacks recorded against USF s B.J. Daniels. His previous high in sacks coming into the season was one vs. Notre Dame in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl. His previous career-best mark for TFLs was 1.5 against Virginia last season, which he has now equaled or bested in three of his last seven starts. Carradine leads the Seminoles in tackles with 48 and is tied with Bjoern Werner for the BREAKING A BILL When you have the nation s fifth-ranked rush defense, it is fairly obvious there are not a lot of backs having great days against you Since allowing back-to-back 100 yard games to Montel Harris (BC) and Damien Berry (UM) in week 6 and week 7 in 2010, only three backs (Andre Williams of BC 2012, Josh Harris of Wake Forest in 2011, Jamie Harper of Clemson in 2010) have broken 100 yards versus the FSU defense in the last 28 games. In that 28 game stretch, the opposing team s top rusher has been held below 50 yards 12 times. What makes that run so special is some of the backs FSU limited during that span: - Chris Rainey (Pittsburgh Steelers) - Jeff Demps (New England Patriots) - Lamar Miller (Miami Dolphins) - Andre Ellington (Clemson) - twice - Dominique Whaley (Oklahoma) - Marcus Lattimore (South Carolina) - Da Rel Scott (NY Giants) - Mike James (Miami) All-American running back Marcus Lattimore was held to -1 yard by the FSU defense before being injured in the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl.

11 team lead in sacks as well (8). The last time a defensive lineman lead FSU in tackles for a season was when All- American defensive end Reinard Wilson did it in 1996 with 105. Tank is now 12th in the nation in sacks, while he and Werner are tied for first in the ACC. where the defense ranks The Seminoles defense has picked up right where it left off last season as far as conference and national rankings are concerned After eight weeks of games, the FSU defense is ranked second in the nation in total defense, seventh in pass defense, second in rushing defense and fifth in scoring defense. Florida State leads the ACC in almost every defensive category: Scoring Defense 1st Total Defense 1st Rushing Defense 1st Pass Defense 1st Pass Effic. Defense 1st Sacks 2nd Opp 3rd Down Conv. 1st BREAK UP THE NOLES The Seminoles are working on getting their turnover numbers up. Despite the fact FSU has just six interceptions in 2012, the Seminoles have done something this year they haven t done since 2010 With five pass break ups versus Clemson and Wake Forest and then five versus BC and UM, the Seminoles recorded back-to-back games with five PBUs twice this year. The last time the Seminoles had consecutive games with as many as five PBUs was October 9 (8 vs. UM) and October 16 (10 vs. BC) in In 2011, FSU s highest number of PBUs in a game was five and that happened on just one occasion. This season the Seminoles have now recoded five PBUs in half of their eight games. BREAK UP THE NOLES II Last season the Seminoles recorded 56 PBU for an average of 4.3 per game Florida State is doing an even better job this year with 43 through eight games for an average of 5.4/game. In the first game of 2012 the Seminoles recorded 10 passes defensed. As usual, the Seminoles athletic defensive linemen played their part in the season opener collecting three of the 10 PBUs. Last season 23% of the PBUs were recorded by defensive linemen and the group has 20.9% (9-of-43) of the break-ups this year. One of the big reasons for that is All-America candidate Bjoern Werner who is the only defensive lineman in the top 10 in the ACC for pass breakups. Werner is joined by corners Ronald Darby, Xavier Rhodes and Nick Waisome giving acc leaders in pbu Player Pos PBU Cockrell (DU) CB 10 Nicholson (VA) CB 10 Price (NC) CB 8 Johnson (MD) LB 8 Scott (NC) CB 6 Exum (VT) CB 6 Rhodes (FSU) CB 6 Werner (FSU) DE 5 Waisome (FSU) CB 5 Darby (FSU) CB 5 Four other players have 5 PBU FSU the most players from any team among the top 20 in PBU in the ACC. QUARTER NUMBERS Not only has defensive coordinator Mark Stoops rebuilt the FSU defense into one of the nation s best his defenses have shown a knack for stretches of utter dominance In the ACC opener Wake Forest posted 54 total yards in the first quarter and just 21 in the second. Clemson had a huge first quarter with 173 yards but that total was more than halved in the second to 85. In the USF game the Bulls put up 144 first quarter yards but then totaled just 39 in the second and third quarters combined. While the high-powered NC State offense got going in the second half, the Wolfpack mustered just 28 yards in the first quarter and only 40 in the second. After putting up 175 yards in the first half, BC posted 32 yards in the third quarter and 23 total yards in the fourth quarter. Miami rushed for -12 yards in the second half. Overall there have been seven quarters this season where the Seminole defense held the opponent to 23 yards or less of total offense. With less than 31 quarters of football played in 2012, FSU opponents have mustered 23 yards or less in a period 22.5% of the time. RED ZONE NUMBERS If you look at the NCAA Statistics concerning red zone defense the Seminoles show up at a 68th, but when you dissect those numbers, you ll see that stats and rankings can sometimes be misleading The NCAA ranks red zone defense based on percentage of scores in red zone trips where FSU has allowed 14 scores on 17 trips. One of the interesting numbers inside those numbers is the fact the Seminoles are one of just 12 teams in all of the FBS to allow opponents inside the red zone 17 times or fewer and only three of those 12 teams have played as many games (8) as FSU. FSU is sixth in the nation in the average times it allows an opponent inside the 20 at 2.13 per game. Red Zone Trips Allowed Team RZ Trips RZ Trips/Gm Opp. RZ Pct. 12 Ok. St LSU TICK TOCK The Seminole defense put up gaudy numbers through the first three games of 2012 and then limited the high-powered Clemson offense in the second half of a monumental top 10 win With back-to-back shutouts in games two and three, the Seminoles went 156:00 without allowing a point before Clemson s first TD of the game. The shutout streak is the longest since a 246:16 run made by the squads, which began in the bowl versus Nebraska and continued versus Kansas and Duke. The Seminoles did not allow a touchdown for 207:48 dating back to the third quarter of the team s 2011 Champs Sports Bowl win over Notre Dame before the Clemson TD in the first quarter. The last time the Seminole DEFENSE held an opponent out of the end zone for three straight games was 1993 when FSU did not allow an OFFENSIVE TD in any of the first three games of the season. FSU did not allow an OFFENSIVE TD in any of the first three games of the season. WERNER S VALUE Following a deflating loss on the road to NC State, the FSU defense opened the Boston College game by allowing the Eagles to take the opening kick-off and marched 68 yards in six plays to the FSU one-yard line. The drive set the tone for the game but not in the way the Eagles would have hoped The FSU defense, with its back to the wall and the goal line, had a four-play stand that left the Eagles with no points and led to a 99-yard TD drive by the offense on the ensuing series. All-American candidate Bjoern Werner had an influence on almost every play from the one-yard line. On the first play Werner batted down a Chase Rettig pass. On second down, Werner combined with Timmy Jernigan to record a tackle for no gain. After a third down no gain, Werner blew up the final BC chance by busting through the middle of the line and forcing an incomplete pass while being credited with a QB hurry. SHUTOUT STREAK To put it mildly, it has been a pretty good start to the 2012 season for the Seminole defense Florida State recorded back-to-back shutouts in week 2 and 3 for the first time since 1980 when the team opened the year with consecutive shutouts versus LSU and Louisville. The Seminole defense has now recorded five shutouts since Mark Stoops took over in a span of 33 games and all five have come inside Doak Campbell Stadium. The last FSU defense to record five shutouts in a fewer stretch of games was the teams that blanked five opponents in a 19-game stretch. You have to go all the way back to legendary coach Don James to find an FSU defensive coordinator (called a defensive chief back then) who directed more shutouts in a smaller span of games to start his career than Mark Stoops has amassed in his first two-plus years. Rebirth Of The D The Seminole defense has undergone a renaissance the last three seasons under defensive coordinator Mark Stoops and is putting up numbers reminiscent of the team s heyday under Mickey Andrews Last season the FSU defense ranked in the top five for rushing defense and total defense and in the Top 10 for sacks and tackles for loss. FSU was the only school in the country last year to rank in the top 10 of each of the following categories: total defense, rushing defense, scoring defense, sacks and tackles for loss. In just three seasons, the Stoops-led defense has improved from 108th in the nation in total defense to number two so far in That improvement is just as dramatic against the run where the squad went from 108 to second. The last team from an AQ conference to rank in the top 10 in five of the major defensive categories in the chart below was the 2009 Sooners. Boise State was the only school to accomplish the same feat in defense rankings last FOUR years NOWHERE TO RUN It is easy to see why the Seminoles defense led the nation in average per rush in 2011 and is already second in rush defense this year when you look inside the numbers The Seminoles have limited 16 of the last 21 opponents to less than 100 yards rushing after holding Miami to just 29 yards on the ground. Only two backs have rushed for more than 100 yards in all of 2011 and In the team s last 16 wins, FSU allowed just under 72 rushing yards per game. Nine of the Seminoles last 21 opponents rushed for less than 65 yards versus the Seminole defense and one just passed that number (NC State 66). OPPONENT RUSHING YARDS IN FSU s LAST 16 WINS 2011 ULM CSU Duke UMD NCST BC UM UF ND MSU SSU WFU CLEM USF BC UM 29 Total 16 gms 1146 yards 71.6/game LEADING THE WAI IN THE SECONDARY There is no doubt sophomore CB Nick Waisome was in the crosshairs versus Clemson having to face the biggest challenge of his young career as the Tigers schemed to match their All-American wide out Sammy Watkins versus the first-year starter Waisome played mostly on special teams as a freshman but was thrust into the starting line-up to replace Greg Reid after a fall battle with standout freshman Ronald Darby. The 5 10 corner from Groveland, Fla., was one of the key reasons Watkins was held to the lowest yards receiving in a game (24) in his short but brilliant career and his lowest yards per catch total by a large margin. His previous low was 9.8/ypc compared to 4.0 versus Waisome and the Seminole secondary. On top of his coverage of Watkins, he had the first interception of his career picking off the only pass of the night by either team. RACKING UP TFL S AGAIN The Seminole defense earned plenty of respect last season for its ability to make tackles behind the line of scrimmage Last year, FSU averaged 7.6 tackles for loss per game, which ranked eighth in the nation. The Seminoles picked up right where they left off versus Murray State with 11 TFL s, including nine in the first half. Florida State registered 11 more in the team s ACC opener against Wake Forest. In the last 21 games FSU has played dating back to the start of 2011, the Seminole defense has recorded double digit TFL in six games (28.6%) and seven or more TFL in 10 games (47.6%). Pre-Season Hype There is a ton of preseason hype surrounding the Seminole defensive players Phil Steele labeled the FSU defense the best in the country in his preseason magazine. ESPN s Mel Kiper lists Xavier Rhodes as a first round talent and ends Bjoern Werner and Brandon Jenkins as pass rushing NFL prospects. In the secondary, Rhodes is a preseason All-American and is joined by Lamarcus Joyner as a candidate for the Bednarik, Nagurski and Thorpe awards. Phil Steele and ESPN.com have both tabbed the Seminoles d-line as the nation s best. 13 NOTING THE NOLES: SPECIAL TEAMS LEADING SCORER IN ACC, FSU HISTORY PTS Senior Dustin Hopkins has scored a career-high 15 points (30 total) in the Seminoles last two games (Boston College and Miami) and is the all-time scoring leader at Florida State with 417 career points. He is the first player in FSU and ACC history to score 400 or more career points. He became the Seminoles all-time leader in field goals made with 75 with his three-of-three performance against Boston College on Oct. 13. He enters Saturday s game agianst Duke with 79 field goals and needs only two to become the all-time ACC leader (Nick Novak of Maryland, 80). He enters Saturday s game against Duke with 417 career points and is ranked fifth all-time in FBS history in scoring. He needs only 23 points to become the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history among kickers with 440 career points. Kyle Brotzman of Boise State ( ) is the current FBS leader with 439 career points. He is one of only nine kickers in FBS history to score 400 or more career points (79 FG s and 180 Pat s) He averages 8.7 points scored per game for his 48-game career. Since the Seminoles lead the ACC and are ranked seventh nationally in scoring (44.4 points scored per game) Beatty is not ranked among the ACC or national leaders because he has been credited with only 26 punts (3.3 punts per game). Beatty and the Seminoles outstanding punt coverage team have allowed only three of his punts to be returned for a total of 20 yards. The Seminoles allowed one punt return for two yards against Murray State and two returns for 18 yards by USF. The Seminoles allow only 0.7 yards per return. NC State leads the ACC with a 0.6 average yards per punt return allowd mark. Beatty is ranked second in the ACC with 15 punts dropped inside of the 20 and is tied as the best punter in the ACC with only one punt having been kicked into the endzone for a touchback. The Seminoles have been forced to make only one tackle on Beatty s first 23 punts of his career and none since his second punt of the season in the second quarter of the first game against Murray State. NEARLY NON RETURNABLE Cason Beatty has punted 26 times and the Seminoles special teams have limited their opponents to a total of 20 total yards on three total returns... Beatty has dropped two of his 26 punts at the five yard line, five of his 26 punts (19 percent) between the six and the 10 yard line, seven of his 26 punts (27 percent) inside of the 10 yard line and 11 of his 26 punts (42 percent) inside of the 15 yard line. The Bulls s offense was impressive at the start, totaling 144 yards in the first quarter, but the Seminoles defense dug in and was dominant in the second and third quarters, allowing just 29 yards on 22 plays during that 30-minute stretch. FSU s defensive effort was bolstered by a pair of turnovers - an interception by redshirt junior cornerback Xavier Rhodes and a fumble recovery for a touchdown by junior linebacker Christian Jones - FSU s first defensive score since Bjoern Werner s fumbler recovery touchdown against Clemson in Jones score gave FSU a commanding lead in the third quarter. Senior defensive end Cornellius Tank Carradine forced the fumble by sacking USF backup quarterback Matt Floyd on his first play of the game after entering for a briefly injured B.J. Daniels - the Tallahassee native who scored twice on the ground. Carradine led FSU with nine tackles, including 1.5 sacks, giving him an ACC-best 7.0 sacks on the season. But a Bjoern Werner batted pass was followed but a trio of no-gain stops to give the Seminoles a much-needed goal-line stand. Despite starting on their own 1-yard line, the Seminoles scored quick on their first drive. After Manuel s heady play to grab a Lonnie Pryor fumble in mid-air and run for a first down, he connected with junior Kenny Shaw for the 77-yard touchdown toss to put FSU up 7-0 early in the first quarter. Shaw tallied two catches for a career-best 125 yards, while senior Rodney Smith grabbed a career-best nine balls for 109 yards, marking the first time two FSU players both hit 100 in the same game since Rashad Greene and Christian Green accomplished the feat against Wake Forest in Pryor recorded a pair of touchdowns on the ground, while sophomore running back James Wilder, Jr.,had a pair of scores through the air - his first two receiving touchdowns of the season. Senior kicker Dustin Hopkins matched his career-high in points with 15 (three field goals and six extra points) and became the ACC s and FSU s all-time leading scorer on his season-best 51-yard field goal to cap the first half. Boston College quarterback Chase Rettig came into the game averaging over 300 yards passing per game this season, but the Seminoles tormented him into a season-low 122 yards. Junior Lamarcus Joyner nabbed his first interception of the season and Christian Jones led the Noles with eight tackles. Florida State won its third straight game against Miami, 33-20, in Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., to become bowl eligible for a nation s-best 31st consecutive season. Head Coach Jimbo Fisher is now 5-0 against in-state rivals, Miami and Florida. The Seminoles overcame a 10-0 first quarter deficit, four fumbles and 12 penalties for 121 yards to overpower the Hurricanes in the second half. The Seminoles are now 7-1 for the first time since The nation s third-ranked defense held Miami to its lowest offensive output of the season when it comes to total yards (253). The Hurricanes passed for just 219 yards and 73 of those yards came on Miami s final drive of the game after FSU took a 20 point lead. Senior defensive end Tank Carradine had one sack and junior defensive end Bjoern Werner tallied a sack-and-a-half to give both players an ACC-best eight sacks this season. Freshman defensive end Mario Edwards, Jr. also nabbed the first half-sack of his career. Junior linebacker Telvin Smith was a dominant performer, leading the Noles with eight tackles, one sack, 2.0 TFLs, a forced fumble and two pass breakups. Sophomore nickel back Tyler Hunter picked off his first career pass. Staring running back Chris Thompson was injured in the second quarter and missed the rest of the game, opening the door for sophomore running back and Miami native Devonta Freeman, who led FSU with 70 yards rushing and two touchdowns - both coming in the fourth quarter. Dustin Hopkins drilled 4-of-5 field goals and made all three extra points. His 33-yard field goal in the first quarter gave FSU its first score and his 46-yarder at the end of the first half gave FSU is first lead A fumble by FSU tight end Nick O Leary on FSU s first play of the game gave Miami a short field and led to a Mike James score to put the Canes ahead F Boston College Florida State SCORING SUMMARY First Quarter 09:13 FS K. Money raised through a campaign called I Fight Fanconi will support research into Fanconi anemia at the University of Minnesota, one of the leading universities pioneering better ways to treat the disorder, in advance of finding a cure. The campaign will raise research dollars for the Kidz 1st Fund, established by the Fishers, through the sale of t-shirts, wristbands and other products and through online donations. Less than seven months after creating the fund, Coach Fisher and his wife Candi along with their sons, presented the University of Minnesota s Amplatz Children s Hospital with a check for $500,000 for Fanconi anemia research during the first half of a University of a Minnesota men s basketball game on Mar. 3, The $500,000 doubled the University s current research budget for Fanconi anemia. This type of hereditary anemia, primarily a blood disease, can affect all systems in the body and leads to bone marrow failure. For decades, the disorder was thought to be untreatable, but promising advances in medical research have improved the prognosis. To extend their lives, most children suffering from Fanconi anemia will require a stem cell transplant, either bone marrow or cord blood, yet many wait years to find a donor who is a perfect match or never find one. Kidz1stFund s ultimate goal is not a dollar figure. It is a cure, so that Ethan and other kids with Fanconi anemia may lead full, happy lives. Together we can fight FA for the thousands affected by this disease. Through your gift to Kidz1stFund, we can all say I FIGHT FANCONI. The Fishers also are making a widespread appeal for people to join the National Marrow Donor Registry to determine if they are a match for any of the thousands of people whose lives depend on a bone marrow transplant. For more information visit: www. Kidz1stFund.com. Became just the third coach in school history to record multiple shutouts in the first two years of his tenure at Florida State. The Seminoles earned shutouts against Wake Forest (Sept. 25, 2010), ULM (Sept. 3, 2011) and NC State (Oct. 29, 2011) in the first 22 games of his career. Only Bill Peterson (1960 and 1961, four shutouts) and Don Veller (1948 and 1949, five shutouts) join Fisher as coaches with multiple shutouts in the first two years of their Florida State careers. With FSU s 34-0 victory over ULM in 2011 season opener, Fisher became the second-winningest head coach after 15 games in FSU history with an 11-4 record. The Seminoles swept Miami and Florida in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1998 and Named the 2010 Football Writer s Association of America s Freshman All-America Team Coach. Won the most games (10) by a first-year coach in Florida State history and tied for the second most by a rookie coach in ACC history. Led FSU to its 30th consecutive bowl appearance - the longest active streak in the nation and second all-time to Nebraska s 35 and extended the Seminoles streak of winning four consecutive bowl games which also is the longest active streak in the nation. Led FSU to first ACC Atlantic Division title since 2005 and first season sweep of Miami and Florida since 1999 in In posting the first season sweep of in-state rivals Florida and Miami, he joined former Florida coaches Ray Graves (1960) and Galen Hall (1985) as the only men in the state to pull off the feat as a firstyear coach. The 52-point combined margin of victory over the rival Hurricanes and Gators was the widest margin in a season sweep by the Seminoles. Guided FSU to its best home record (6-1) in 2010 since posting 6-0 marks at Doak Campbell Stadium in 1999 and By winning six of his first seven games in his first year, Fisher joined former FSU coaches Don Veller (`48) and Larry Jones (`71) to notch that feat as a first-year coach with the `Noles. Responsible for developing FSU QB Christian Ponder who, as a second-year starter, led the ACC in total offense and passing yards per game in Ponder capped off his senior season in 2010 by becoming the 12th overall pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2011 NFL Draft.
