4 RELEASE NO. 6- DECEMBER 3, 2009 PAGE 4 HEAD COACH KEVIN BORSETH KEVIN BORSETH HEAD COACH THIRD SEASON Kevin Borseth was named the eighth head coach of the University of Michigan women s basketball program on April 10, Believed to have one of the best basketball minds in the country, Borseth s name has become synonymous with success in his 27 years as a college head coach. Borseth didn t disappoint in his first season at the helm of the Michigan women s basketball program. He and his staff orchestrated the second-best one-year turnaround in the history of the program. Taking a team that hadn t posted a winning record in six seasons to a record and its first postseason berth in six years. In the first year under Borseth, U-M finished the Big Ten regular-season tied for seventh place, which was the highest finish in the league since The Wolverines also won a Big Ten Tournament game for the first time in four years with a win over Penn State on March 6. The season also saw Michigan advance past the first round of a national tournament for the first time in program history. U-M set a new single-season record for home victories with 12, while improving in nearly every single statistical category. The Wolverines made a program record 209 three-pointers and led the Big Ten in triples made per game with 6.33 per contest, while ranking second among conference teams in scoring defense, limiting their opponents to just 57.3 points per game. Several Wolverines also received accolades throughout the season. Jessica Minnfield s 52 three-point field goals ranked second all-time in school history as she led the Big Ten in three-point shooting at a.406 clip. Carly Benson was named to the All-Big Ten third team by the coaches, marking U-M s first selection since Borseth and the Wolverines also reached some significant milestones during his second season. Michigan took on six nationally-ranked opponents and picked up two wins over nationally-ranked Vanderbilt and Notre Dame. The victory over then-no. 8 Notre Dame marked the highest ranked opponent the Wolverines have defeated in program history. In addition, Michigan claimed the Southern Mississippi Lady Eagle Classic, taking home an in-season tournament title for the first time since the season. In his second season Borseth became the second fastest U-M coach to win 25 games, needing only 43 games to reach the feat and led the Wolverines to several impressive feats. Senior Carly Benson became the 19th, 1000-point scorer and had two of her best seasons under Borseth s tutelage while the Wolverines again led the Big Ten in three-point field goals made with 6.57 three-pointers per game. Senior Jessica Minnfield concluded her career with 387 career assists placing her fourth all-time while Minnfield and Benson set a new mark for career appearances, each appearing in 122 games neither missing a game in their U-M career. The 55-year-old Borseth has utilized a passionate, enthusiastic and animated brand of basketball that has allowed his teams to compete with the top programs in the nation. He is using the same approach as he restores pride in Michigan women s basketball and puts it back on the national map. In his 21 years as a head coach at the NCAA Division I and II levels, Borseth owns a (.686) career record. He has strung together 19 consecutive winning seasons, including 15 campaigns with at least 20 victories, while his teams have won or shared 13 regular-season conference championships. Borseth has carried his success over into the postseason as well, capturing eight league tournament titles and guiding his teams to 14 NCAA and threewnit appearances in two decades on the hardwood. Prior to his arrival in Ann Arbor, Borseth spent nine years at the helm of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women s program. Under his direction, the Phoenix earned nine straight postseason appearances, including seven berths in the NCAA Tournament. Borseth compiled a (.777) record as head coach of UW-Green Bay and his teams cracked the Associated Press Top 25 on three occasions in five years. The Phoenix claimed the Horizon League regular-season championship every year Borseth was on the bench, capturing the conference tournament title seven of those years. Borseth garnered Horizon League Coach of the Year honors in all but two of his nine seasons at UW-Green Bay. In his ninth and final season at UW-Green Bay, Borseth led his squad to a 29-4 record, including a perfect 16-0 conference mark, en route to a Horizon League postseason championship as the top seed in the tournament. The Phoenix claimed the conference title after soundly defeating Butler, 91-64, earning it a bid into the NCAA Tournament. UW-Green Bay made it to the second round of the tournament before bowing out to top-ranked Connecticut, Borseth was named the conference s Coach of the Year for the seventh time, while senior forward Nicole Soulis became the first player in 17 years to garner back-to-back Horizon League Player of the Year accolades. Borseth s team posted a 23-7 mark, its 29th consecutive winning season and the 19th 20-win campaign in the program s history. The Phoenix captured its eighth straight conference regular-season crown after amassing a 14-2 record but fell in the semifinals of the Horizon League Championship. After being invited to the WNIT, UW-Green Bay was eliminated in the first round, dropping a overtime decision to Iowa State. On Jan. 12, 2006, Borseth s team handed him a victory over Cleveland State, the 400th NCAA win of the coach s career. In addition to that milestone, Soulis earned her first Horizon League Player of the Year award, becoming the third Phoenix player in four years to receive the honor. Junior guard Natalie Bergman was named to the all-conference second team, while guard Rachel Porath was tabbed for the all-freshman team. Borseth guided his Phoenix team to a 27-4 overall record, accompanying a 16-game winning streak, its longest in the program s Division I history. The unbeaten streak also tied for the longest winning streak of Borseth s collegiate coaching career. UW-Green Bay appeared in both the coaches and the media top 25 polls and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season, earning Borseth his sixth Horizon League Coach of the Year accolade. After leading his team to 23-8 overall record, including a 13-3 Horizon League mark, Borseth was tabbed as the conference s Coach of the Year for the third straight season. Despite a host of injuries that shortened the bench for the majority of the year, UW-Green Bay posted its eighth straight 20-win season, earning it a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The season was a record year for Borseth s squad as UW-Green Bay rattled off a 28-4 record, the best in team history as well as the winningest season in the history of the Horizon League. The Phoenix also enjoyed a 14-week stint in the national top 25 polls, peaking at No. 16 in mid-january. With a defeat of then No. 25-ranked Texas Christian, Borseth notched his first win over a top 25 team. In a year of firsts, UW-Green Bay posted its first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament, defeating Washington, With his success in the season, Borseth was recognized as the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Region VI Coach of the Year and was named a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year award. He was also elected to the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Class of Before taking the helm at UW-Green Bay, Borseth spent 11 years as head coach of the women s program at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. During his tenure, Borseth accumulated a (.699) record, claimed four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championships, and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament seven times. During the campaign, Borseth led the Huskies to a 30-3 mark en route to a third-place finish in the NCAA Division II Tournament. It was the first time U-M had over 50 rebounds since recording 56 against Detroit during the season. OPPONENTS PUTTING UP BIG NUMBERS The Wolverines have had problems stopping their opponents from having big games and in each of their last three games they have allowed an opponent to score 20 or more points. Against Kansas (Nov. 22), Sade Morris had 26 points and against Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 27) Whitney Cormier had 23 points and New Mexico State s Jasmine Lowe posted 24 points on Saturday (Nov. 28). This is the first time the Wolverines have allowed an opponent to score 20 or more points in back-toback-to-back games since the season. RONI HAS A CAREER AFTERNOON IN KANSAS Junior guard Veronica Hicks can score and she proved it against No. 19 Kansas (Nov. 22) with a career-best 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor. Her previous career-best was 16 points which she set on the road last season at nationally-ranked Duke and set again against Iowa later in the season. 91 POINTS AND COUNTING The Wolverines keep racking up the offense and had a great shooting night against Southern Miss (Nov. 19). Aside from shooting a season-best 57.4 percent from the floor (35-of-61), U-M recorded 91 points in the victory. It is the most points since U-M scored 98 in a victory over Fordham during the season and is the most points in the Kevin Borseth era. U-M OFFENSE PROVIDING A LIFT U-M head coach Kevin Borseth s favorite saying is You can t win games unless you can score and in his first two seasons at the helm of the program scoring was an issue as U-M averaged less than 60 points, but the offense seems to be clicking this year. U-M is averaging 77.2 points per game nearly 18 more points than they have averaged in the last two seasons. DEFENSE IS SOLID AS A ROCK While U-M has picked up the scoring this season their defense is as solid as ever. U-M has held teams to less than 60 points in each of Kevin Borseth s two seasons at the helm of the program and this season is no different. Through their first four games, U-M opponents are averaging 63.5 points and are averaging 19.8 turnovers per game. The Wolverines allowed their most points this season at Kansas (Nov. 22) giving up 77 points.

7 RELEASE NO. 6- DECEMBER 3, 2009 PAGE 7 THEY SHOOT, THEY SCORE U-M has been on fire from the floor to start the season. The Maize and Blue have shot better than 40 percent in each game this season and shot a season-best 57.4 percent against Southern Miss (Nov. 19). DOUBLE DIGIT DIVAS So far this season the Wolverines have had plenty of players in double figures. In the first three games of the season, Veronica Hicks, Carmen Reynolds and Dayeesha Hollins each scored in double figures. Hicks have been in double figures in every game this season and is leading the team with 14.5 points per game. In additon, the Wolverines have had at least two players in double digits in each game this season. SHARING THE ROCK Michigan has posted at least 20 assists in two of four games this season and posted a season-best 21 assists against Southern Miss (Nov. 19). U-M s 21 assists is ninth best on U-M s single-game list. The Wolverines have had double-digit assists in each game this season. SEE YOU IN DECEMBER U-M is in the middle of an eight-game road trip that will take the Wolverines from Kansas to New Mexico to Boston and a few other locations and will keep them away from home until Dec. 28. In Borseth s first season, the Wolverines had a sixgame road trip featuring trips to Miami, Nashville and Texas. WOLVERINES LOVE LONG RANGE Michigan has always like to shoot the three-point shot and led the Big Ten for the second consecutive season in three-point field goals made in with 6.57 three-pointers per game and so far this season is no different. The Wolverines are averaging 7.0 triples per game and are shooting at a.389 clip from long range. Freshman Kate Thompson is leading the way and is 5-of-6 (.833) from behind the arc. In additon, 10 of Michigan s players hs recorded a triple this season. HOME SWEET CRISLER The Wolverines love to play in front of the home crowd and this season have 12 home games. U-M has a record in Crisler and in Borseth s two season s at the helm own a record in the House that Cazzie Built WOLVERINES = YOUNG Coach Kevin Borseth is coaching his youngest team ever in his 27-year coaching career with this season s Wolverines. Not only do the Wolverines only return one starter in junior guard Veroncia Hicks from last season, but they have nine underclassmen. In fact, Hicks and senior center Krista Phillips are the only Wolverines with significant playing and starting experience. Between U-M s upperclassmen of Ashley Jones, Kalyn McPherson, Krista Phillips and Veronica Hicks only Hicks and Phillips have started more than 14 contests. MAIZE AND BLUE STORYLINES WOLVERINES TAKE ON RANKED OPPONENTS The Wolverines have never shyed away from playing ranked opponets. In fact, they took on five last season and this season will be no different. The Wolverines are set to face off with four teams that are ranked in the AP Top 25 preseason poll. Ohio State (No. 3), Michigan State (No. 10), Xavier (No. 11), Kanas (No. 20). WOLVERINES TAKE ON COMMON OPPONENTS The Wolverine women and men will take on several common opponents in non-conference action. Both squads will take on Big 12 member Kansas on the road at historic Allen Fieldhouse and both will take on Boston College. The men will face the Eagles at home in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, while the women will take on the Eagles in Chestnut Hill, Mass. In additon, both squads will take on Detroit. BORSETH CLOSING IN ON COACHING RECORDS Head Coach Kevin Borseth needs only two more wins to tie former head coach Cheryl Burnett s 35 wins in her four year tenure. Should the Wolverines post their third-ever 20-win season in , Borseth will become the fourth winningest coach in program history. COMING UP ON 400 The Michigan women s basketball program is four wins away from 400 program wins. Last season, the Wolverines picked up their 200th win in Crisler Arena, a OT win over Notre Dame. 44 RELEASE NO. 6- DECEMBER 3, 2009 PAGE GAME-BY-GAME BOXSCORES & SUMMARIES G1: MICHIGAN VS. BALL STATE NOV. 13, 2009-ANN ARBOR, MICH. (CRISLER ARENA) ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) had a career night from long range with five three-point field goals and 19 points to lead the University of Michigan women s basketball team to an season-opening victory over Ball State on Friday (Nov. 13) in Crisler Arena. Reynolds was one of three Wolverines in double figures in the contest. Junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill. / Thornwood) added 15 points, while freshman Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) posted 12 points in her collegiate debut. Hicks was U-M s leading rebounder with seven boards. U-M had a stellar shooting night, going 31-of-66 from the floor for a 46-percent clip. From three-point range, the Wolverines shot a 53-percent (14-of-26) pace. Reynolds and Hicks led the way from long range with five and four triples, respectively, and freshman guard Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn. /Wayzata) was a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown in her collegiate debut. Michigan and Ball State both needed a few minutes to shake off the rust, but it was the Wolverines that made the first move, and at the 18:31 mark, scored the first bucket of the game on a triple from Hicks. The basket sparked a quick 10-3 run to give the Wolverines an early seven-point lead, while tight defense held the Cardinals to just three points through first eight minutes of the game. U-M used a balanced attack, getting offense from nearly everyone that entered the game, including all six freshmen. After cruising to a 20-point lead at halftime, U-M kept the momentum in the second half and continued to force the Cardinals to turn the ball over, which led to 21 U-M points and its third-consecutive season-opening victory. Michigan had some impressive statistics at the end of the first half, only allowing the Cardinals one point off turnovers and holding them to 29-percent shooting from the floor. The Cardinals had a tough time shooting in the first half and were held to 23 percent on 9-of-31 shooting from the field. Ball State responded in the second half, going 17-of-32 from the floor and finished the game shooting 41.3 percent on 26-of-63 shooting. Emily Maggert was the lone Cardinal in double digits after the first half and concluded the game with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for the lone doubledouble of the contest. Michigan continues its season-opening three-game homestand on Monday (Nov. 16) when it welcomes the Marquette Golden Eagles to Crisler Arena. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. Fans can also listen to the game on WLBY AM 1290 with Matt Park and Nick Brandon on the call. G2: MICHIGAN VS. MARQUETTE NOV. 16, 2009-ANN ARBOR, MICH. (CRISLER ARENA) ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman guard Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) scored 10 of her 17 points in the second half and the Wolverines shot 57.7 (15-of-26) percent from the floor in the second frame as the University of Michigan women s basketball team overcame a halftime deficit with a second-half scoring advantage to defeat Marquette, 67-50, on Monday night (Nov. 16) at Crisler Arena. Hollins was the game s leading scorer on 6-of-12 shooting and was joined in double figures by junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) and sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), who had 13 and 11 points, respectively. Senior forward Ashley Jones (Southfield, Mich./Martin Luther King) posted a game-best 10 rebounds. The game was really a tail of two halves as Michigan struggled to find any offense in the first half but was able to use defense to force turnovers and keep the Golden Eagles from getting second-chance shots. It was a slow start for both teams with neither squad scoring a bucket until four minutes had gone off the game clock. Marquette was able to jump out to a 5-0 lead, but the U-M defense forced several turnovers and was able to get a little offense going and cut the Marquette lead to 7-7 early with two early jumpers from Hollins. Marquette used a 13-1 run late in the half to open up a 10-point lead at 26-16, its largest lead of the half, but buckets from senior guard Kalyn McPherson (Traverse City, Mich./ West) and Hicks gave the Golden Eagles a six-point lead heading into the break. Statistically speaking, Marquette was getting to the foul line and making things happen. In the first half, the Golden Eagles reached the foul line six more times than the Wolverines and were 11-of-13 from the charity stripe as opposed to U-M, which was 4-of-7 from the line. In addition, U-M was 0-for-5 from long range. Trailing Marquette by six points at halftime, the Wolverines opened the second half with a sense of urgency. U-M got itself right back into the game in the opening minutes behind a 15-9 run, sparked by baskets from Reynolds and Hicks and tied the game at at the 12:51 mark of the second half. The teams traded baskets and Marquette took a lead on a three-pointer from Angel Robinson but that was the last deficit they faced as the Wolverines went on a run to close out the game and move to 2-0 on the season. Jones was key throughout the first several minutes of the second half, coming up with several defensive stops as well as creating havoc for the Marquette guards under the basket. Reynolds, who scored 19 points and had five three-pointer in U-M s last game, started to heat up from behind the arc in the second half, and with a three-pointer at the 10:55 mark, gave U-M s its first lead of the game. The Wolverines, who were 0-for-5 from behind the arc in the first half, found their range in the second half and ended the game with six threepointers. G3: MICHIGAN VS. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI NOV. 19, 2009-ANN ARBOR, MICH. (CRISLER ARENA) ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- All five starters scored in double digits, led by 18 points from freshman guard Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods), as the University of Michigan women s basketball team beat Southern Mississippi, 91-54, on Thursday (Nov. 19) inside Crisler Arena. The win moves the Wolverines to 3-0 on the season. Joining Hollins in double figures were senior center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) with 13 points, sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/ Davidson) with 12 points and freshman Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) with 10 points. Junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood), who scored 12, and freshman forward Nya Jordan (Lathrup Village, Mich./ Detroit Community) each posted six rebounds in the victory. The Wolverines held Southern Mississippi s leading scorer Pauline Love, who entered the game averaging 25 points and 12 rebounds, to just seven points and six rebounds. Despite owning a 17-point halftime lead, U-M s offense took a little bit of time to find its rhythm entering the second half, but Reynolds started things off with five points in the first four minutes of action and Hollins added six to push the U-M lead to 20 points. From there, the Wolverines coasted, never allowing the Lady Eagles to get closer than 22 points. Michigan played efficient basketball, recording 21 assists on 35 made field goals, and was equally effective on the defensive side of the ball, posting six blocks and 14 steals. Defense was the name of the game in the first half. U-M forced the Lady Eagles into four early turnovers and kept the ball out of Love s hands and jumped out to an early 19-5 lead. Phillips was a huge reason for U-M s early lead as she opened the game 4-of-5 from the floor and hit two free throws early to lead the team with 13 points in the opening frame. Southern Miss made up some ground with a 15-6 run midway through the half to cut the lead from 22-5 at 12:28 to at the 5:48 mark. Three-point shooting made all the difference for Southern Mississippi in the first half as the Lady Eagles hit 5-of-7 for 71.4 percent. It was the opposite for the Wolverines, who were 50 percent from the floor on 15-of-30 shooting but were only 5-of-13 (.385) from behind the arc. The Wolverines open up an eight-game road trip at Kansas, currently ranked No. 19, on Sunday (Nov. 22). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CST at historic Allen Fieldhouse. 45 RELEASE NO. 6- DECEMBER 3, 2009 PAGE GAME-BY-GAME BOXSCORES & SUMMARIES G4: MICHIGAN AT NO. 19 KANSAS NOV. 22, 2009-LAWRENCE, KAN. (ALLEN FIELDHOUSE) LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) had a career afternoon with a career-high 21 points, but the University of Michigan women s basketball team could not overcome a 57-percent first-half shooting effort from No. 19 Kansas in a loss on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 22) in Allen Fieldhouse. Joining Hicks in double figures was freshman guard Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) with 16 points, while freshman guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./ Novuel Catholic Central) led the Wolverines on the glass with a career-high eight rebounds. After scoring only 26 points in the first half, Michigan came out and found some offense to cut the Kansas lead down to four points at with just five minutes off the game clock behind timely three-pointers from sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), freshman forward Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) and Hicks. The Wolverines matched Kansas bucket for bucket in the second half, trailing by just three (52-49) with 12:51 to play, but a KU run over the next eight minutes sealed the game for the Jayhawks. The Wolverines kept Naismith Award candidate Danielle McCray at bay for most of the game, holding her to only six first half-points and 11 for the game. Sade Morris led the Jayhawks with 26 points. Kansas took an early 8-3 lead, but U-M responded with a healthy dose of defense, forcing the Jayhawks to rush plays and make quick decisions, and Hicks took over on the offense end of things with seven points to cut the Kansas lead to at the 12:29 mark of the first frame. Kansas used a 7-0 run to take a lead, but the Wolverines responded to cut the lead to before the Jayhawks stretched the advantage to at halftime. The first half was a decidedly defensive battle on both ends. U-M had six steals and forced Kansas into 11 turnovers, but things were quite different on the offensive end. Michigan shot 38 percent from the field on 11-of-29 shooting and Kansas paced the offense, shooting 57 percent on 16-of-28 shooting in the first frame. The Jayhawks also had a marked advantage in points in the paint with 20 and points off turnovers with 19. The Wolverines will stay on the road as they head to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Aggie Thanksgiving Classic hosted by New Mexico State. U-M takes on Stephen F. Austin on Friday (Nov. 27) at 5 p.m. MST and will close tournament action against host New Mexico State on Saturday (Nov. 28) at 7 p.m. MST. G5: MICHIGAN VS. STEPHEN F. AUSTIN NOV LAS CRUCES, N.M. (PAN AMERICAN CENTER) LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Freshman forward Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) had a coming out party against the Stephen F. Austin LadyJacks with a career-best 16 points and four rebounds to lead the University of Michigan women s basketball team to a victory in the opening game of the Aggie Hotel Encanto Classic on Friday night (Nov. 27) at New Mexico State s Pan American Center. Joining Arnold in double figures were sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) with 16 points, junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) with 12 points and freshman forward Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) with a career-best 12 points. Classmates Reynolds and sophomore guard Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) led the Wolverines with seven rebounds each. U-M, which led the game from start to finish, had a 40-8 advantage in the paint and had 21 second-chance points. Stephen F. Austin was led by Whitney Cormier, who had a game-best 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. The Wolverines, who had an eight-point lead at halftime, were led by freshman guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./ Nouvel Catholic Central) in the second half, as U-M opened with a 6-0 run, largely in part to two Ryan buckets, to extend its lead to with just several minutes off the clock. Michigan began to take it to the LadyJacks on the inside in the second half with U-M s post players recording 19 secondhalf points and 22 points in the paint. The Wolverines, anticipating an up-tempo game from the LadyJacks, came out firing on all cylinders in the first half and made their first shot, a three-pointer from Ryan, and jumped out to an early 11-4 lead. Michigan took advantage of the size of senior center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/ Aden Bowman Collegiate) as the Wolverines dominated the battle of the paint 18-6 in the first half. Stephen F. Austin settled in after the first several minutes of the game and forced the Wolverines into six early turnovers, which minimized U-M s season-best 51.9 percent shooting in the first half. U-M struggled with Stephen F. Austin s frenetic press but was able to get to the free-throw line to offset the turnover woes, going 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Wolverines inside game made all the difference in the first half. U-M s post players Phillips and Arnold, who had 11 points in the first half, used their height to their advantage as the Wolverines took a lead into the break. Michigan concludes action at the New Mexico State Aggie Classic on Saturday (Nov. 28) against host New Mexico State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in New Mexico State s Pan American Center. G6: MICHIGAN AT NEW MEXICO STATE NOV LAS CRUCES, N.M. (PAN AMERICAN CENTER) LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman Collegiate) led four Wolverines in double-figures with a season-best 16 points but the University of Michigan women s basketball team could not find a way down the stretch, falling to host New Mexico State in the final game of the Aggie Hotel Encanto Classic on Saturday night (Nov. 28). Michigan concluded the weekend with a 1-1 record in the Thanksgiving tournament. For the second consecutive game, the Wolverines had four players in double figures. Joining Phillips in double digits was junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill/Thornwood) with 14 points and freshman guard Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) with 10 points each. Phillips also led the way on the glass with a team-best seven rebounds. The Aggies and Wolverines battled right down to the wire, with neither team holding a lead of more than four points in the final two minutes of the game. Michigan took a lead on a jumper from Phillips with 43 second remaining. A three-pointer, one of her five on the evening from New Mexico State s Jasmine Lowe, put the Aggies ahead by one, Michigan had two chances late to regain the lead as Phillips had an opportunity with a jumper and Hicks had a great look at a three with time expiring but nothing fell, sending U-M to its second loss of the season. Despite U-M holding a lead at halftime, the Wolverines and Aggies went back and forth in the early part of the second half but a three-pointer from freshman forward Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) kept the lead with Michigan. Defense continued to be a strong point and senior forward Ashley Jones (Southfield, Mich./Martin Luther King) made one of the best defensive plays of the night running the length of the court to save an easy New Mexico State basket. The Aggies, who came into the game shooting only 32.2 percent from behind the arc, were on fire from long range, going 12-of-27 and shooting 44.4 percent from long range, led by five from Lowe, who was the game s leading scorer with 24 points. Michigan struggled throughout most of the first and found themselves trailing the host Aggies for most of the half, but an 8-0 run over a two-minute span tied the game at with 2:38 remaining. The Wolverines went back to their standby defense and forced the Aggies into three turnovers in the final minutes and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Reynolds from the left elbow sent Michigan into the locker room with a two-point lead, Despite seemingly struggling from the floor, the Wolverines shot 52 percent from the floor on 13-of-25 shooting and held a slim, edge on the glass and were led by 10 points from Hicks. The Wolverines will stay on the road on for their next game as they head down to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 3.
