The Lobos are coming off a season-opening victory at the Gopher Invitational last weekend in Independence, Minn. UNM will take the same lineup this week to Burlington, Iowa for the three day event. LAST EVENT THE GOPHER INVITATIONAL: In Independence, Minn., the University of New Mexico men s golf team has picked up where the team left off. Junior Gavin Green and true freshman Andrej Bevins each shot 1-under-par 70s to help the Lobos shoot a 1-under-par 283 Monday to preserve their lead and win the season-opening Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn. UNM, ranked 10th in the preseason by Golf Digest, was the only team in the 12-school field to finish under par for the 54-hole event, finishing at 4 under ( =848) and defeating second-place Baylor ( =854, 2 over) by six strokes. Preseason No. 22 Kent State was third at 5 over ( =857), followed by preseason No. 2 California at 7 over ( =859). It was the third victory in the last four tournaments for the Lobos, going back to They won the Mountain West championship and the NCAA Columbus Regional championship before finishing fifth in the NCAA Championship to close out last season. That team included three seniors. The new team has two players in Bevins and Joe Abella who have joined juniors Green and Victor Perez, both of whom were the other starters on last year s team New Mexico men s golf *1

Obviously, Gavin and Victor want to have another great year, but really, we don t talk about last year. We have a good group of guys who played pretty well their first time out. Nobody played perfect, but today gave our guys a great experience. Green shot 5 under for the tournament ( =208) to finish in third place, two strokes behind medalist Corey Conners of Kent State. Conners ( =206), who shot 7 under. California s Brandon Hagy was second at 6 under ( =207). Gavin played well; he just didn t putt as well as he normally does, Millican said. He put himself in a position to win; he just needed a few more putts to drop. Bevins shot a 2-over 215 ( ) to finish tied for 13th. Abella struggled with a 6-over 77 on Monday after going 2-under after the first two rounds. Abella finished tied for 16th with a 4-over 217 ( ). Both those guys did a great job for us, Millican said. Joe s first two rounds were solid. Andrej had a triple bogey on the sixth hole of his first tournament. Otherwise, he would ve been under par. Perez tied Abella at 4-over 217 ( ), struggling only in round two. Junior Sean Romero, an integral part of the team, finished at 6-over 219 ( ) to tie for 24th in the 64-player field. This was a championship-style course, Millican. It will definitely help us with other courses we ll see this season. The team win was the 23rd under 13-year coach Millican. He is six tournament wins shy of becoming UNM s all-time leader in victories. LAST YEAR GOPHER INVITATIONAL: UNM did not play this event during the men s golf season. PRESEASON PUBLICITY: Golf Digest ranked UNM 10th in its preseason poll and listed junior Gavin Green as one of the top 50 collegians to watch during the upcoming season. HEAD COACH GLEN MILLICAN: Glen Millican is in his 13th year as Lobo men s golf team head coach. Millican has coached the Lobos to 23 tournament victories during his tenure including the season-opening Gopher Invitational and has won five conference championships (2003, 04, 05, 06, 2013). Millican was one of six finalists for the National Coach of the Year Award, as voted by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2013, capturing the award for the third time in his career. He also was the Southwest Region Coach of the Year from The Lobos have made six NCAA Tournament appearances under his guidance ( , 2013). His team finished fifth in the NCAA Championship in Alpharetta, Ga., in June of The team, ranked in the top five for most of the year, also won the NCAA Columbus Regional and the Mountain West Championship. LOBOS IN THE FIELD GAVIN GREEN (1): A third-team All-American as a sophomore, Green enters as one of the top 50 collegians to watch. Green finished third in the season-opening Gopher Invitational, finishing with a 5-under 208 ( ). He was the highest-ranking Lobo at the NCAA Championship last season, finishing 26th among 156 players in stroke play and winning his match-play event against Alabama. Green won his first collegiate tournament when he birdied a 30-foot putt on No. 18 to win the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. He finished tied for second at the PING Golfweek Preview, tied for fifth at the John Burns Intercollegiate and placed sixth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. Green also played in all 14 tournaments as a true freshman for the Lobos in His best finish in was ninth at the Mountain West Championships in May New Mexico men s golf *2

Romero competed in eight tournaments in , with his best finish coming at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course, in which he finished 10th. He tied for 22nd at last season s Gopher Invitational. As a true freshman in , Romero helped the Lobos earn a top-20 national ranking and advance to the NCAA Regionals. JOSEPH ABELLA (4): Abella tied for 16th in the Gopher Invitational with a 4-over 217 ( ). He competed in two tournaments for the Lobos in , at the 2012 William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course and the 2013 Arizona Invitational in Tucson. He was the Texas District 8-5A champion in the spring of 2012 for Plano East High School. ANDREJ BEVINS (5): Bevins, a true freshman, had an impressive 13th-place finish in the season-opening Gopher Invitational, finishing at 2-over 215 ( ). Bevins was the No. 7 player nationally in the class of 2013, as rated by golfweek.com. He was No. 2 in the state of California. ALL-AMERICANS, PARTY OF TWO: The University of New Mexico had two players earn All-America honors in Departing senior James Erkenbeck was a first-team All- America selection, as voted by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Gavin Green, who returns for his junior season this year, was a third-team All-America pick in QUARTET ON ALL-MW TEAM: John Catlin, James Erkenbeck, Gavin Green and Victor Perez all earned All-Mountain West honors in , marking the first time in school history that four Lobos earned an all-conference team. Albuquerque, NM TROPHY PRESENTATIONS: The University of New Mexico kicked off the season with a six-stroke victory over runner-up Baylor at the 12-team Gopher Invitational. The win was UNM s third in its last four tournaments, going back to New Mexico was the only team in the field under par with a 4-under 848. The Lobos won five tournaments in For the first time in school history, UNM won both a conference championship and an NCAA Regional in the same season. The Lobos rallied to win the NCAA Columbus Regional from May 16-18, shooting an 18-over 870 to defeat Auburn and South Carolina by two strokes. Two weeks earlier, UNM flexed its muscle by capturing the Mountain West Championship with an 8-under 844 to beat San Diego State and UNLV by eight strokes. The Lobos shot a 20-under 844 to defeat then-no. 8 TCU by a stroke at the Don Puckette Invitational on March UNM came away with a two-stroke victory over TCU at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Jan Four Lobos finished in the top 20, including James Erkenbeck s tie for third place as the Lobos shot an 8-under 844. UNM won its first tournament of the season with a 29-stroke victory at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, shooting a 15-under 849 on Sept Sophomore Gavin Green shot a 7-under 209 for his first individual collegiate title by one stroke over Minnesota s Erik Van Rooyen. Individually, James Erkenbeck won two events for UNM. He captured medalist honors at the NCAA Columbus Regional with a 3-under 210 for a four-stroke victory. Erkenbeck also finished in a four-way tie for first at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in March, shooting a 4-under ( =212), for his second career win. LOBOS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: UNM currently is ranked No. 10 in the nation in the preseason Golf Digest/Golf World collegiate rankings. IT S ALL ACADEMIC: The group was named to the national All-Academic Team, presented by Farmers Insurance, finishing the season with a 3.28 collective grade-point average.
