LAST GAME: Trail Blazers 92, SuperSonics Oct. 12, 2004, Rose Garden The visiting Seattle SuperSonics, who the night before had dispatched the Lakers in Los Angeles, were without their top scorer Ray Allen, but the Trail Blazers had plenty of weapons in their own camp and scored a wire-to-wire victory in their preseason opener in the Rose Garden. Portland built a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Except for a brief Sonics rally at the end of the second quarter which closed the margin to at intermission, the Blazers had a double-digit advantage most of the game and were ahead by as many as 26 points midway through the fourth stanza. Shareef Abdur-Rahim fired the Portland offense early, making all five of his field goals and all three free throws in the first half. The veteran forward finished with 16 points in 27 minutes, making 6 of 7 field goals, his only three-point attempt and the three free throws. Guard Derek Anderson led all scorers in the game with 23 points, converting 6 of 9 field goals, 3 of 5 triples and 8 of 10 free throws. Twelve of the 13 Blazers who saw action put points on the board. Portland, red-hot from beyond the arc where it made 9 of 13 threepointers (69%), shot a respectable 45.1% from the field for the game. The Blazers harassing defense held the Sonics to 35.1% shooting (27 of 77) and stole the ball 12 times. Vladimir Radmanovic and Ibrahim Kutluay led Seattle with 11 points each. Seattle Seattle Portland ,167 Portland NEXT GAME Golden State Warriors --- Oct. 13, 2004, 7:30 p.m., The Arena in Oakland Portland will be looking to make it two in a row when it plays the second game in two nights Thursday in Oakland against the Golden State Warriors, led by their new head coach Mike Montgomery. Golden State opened its preseason schedule on Sunday with a thumping of Sacramento on the Kings floor. The Warriors were led by Mike Dunleavy, Jr. with 17 points and ex-blazer Dale Davis with 12. Portland split its four-game series with Golden State last season. Each team won and lost a game on its own floor. The Warriors took the first two meetings, winning in Oakland on Nov. 23 then running away with a decision in Portland on Jan. 24. The Trail Blazers responded by stealing a win at Golden State then squeezed out an victory in the Rose Garden. Zach Randolph was Portland s top scorer in the series, averaging 19.8 points. Jason Richardson led the Warriors, averaging 22.3 ppg. LAST YEAR: # Golden State 78, Portland Arena in Oakland, Nov. 23, 2003 (7-6) The Blazers dropped to 0-5 on the road with a loss at Golden State. Shooting below 40 percent for the second straight game (38.0% on 30-79), Portland was ahead, 41-39, at intermission but then managed just 31 points in the second half. Part of the Blazers problem was their inability to connect from long range and from the line; they made just 1 of 15 three-point attempts and were only 7 of 15 from the line. Zach Randolph led Portland with 17 points; Bonzi Wells came off the bench to add 13. Jason Richardson led the Warriors with 21 points. The Blazers were outrebounded, 53-47, and outscored in the paint, Portland Portland Golden St ,332 Golden St # Golden State 105, Portland Rose Garden, Jan. 24, 2004 (17-24) Portland came back to earth after a big road win four nights earlier. The Blazers, who beat the team with the NBA s best home record, the Sacramento Kings, in Sacramento, returned to the Rose Garden to drop a decision to Golden State. The Warriors came into the game with a 12-game road losing streak. It was the Blazers first home loss to Golden State in 12 games, their fourth straight setback at home and the 10th in the last 12 games. Portland, outrebounded 42-34, never led. The Blazers got to within on Wes Person s three-pointer at the opening of the fourth quarter but from there the Warriors pulled away and enjoyed a double-digit lead for the game s last five minutes. The Blazers made 47.5% of their shots from the field but were just 5 of 10 from the line. Golden State shot 50% (39-78) and made 16 of 19 free throws. Zach Randolph led Portland s scoring with 23 points. Darius Miles, in his first game after coming to Portland in a trade that sent Jeff McInnis to Cleveland, scored 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 20 minutes of action. 3 # Portland 94, Golden State Arena in Oakland, Feb. 20, 2004 (26-28) Zach Randolph s layup off a feed from Damon Stoudamire with 1.8 seconds remaining lifted the Trail Blazers to a victory over the Golden State Warriors in Oakland. The win improved Portland s road record to 9-18 and 7-2 to since Jan. 18. Portland led by one, 76-75, going into the final quarter of a tight game that saw 17 lead changes and 14 ties. Four of those lead exchanges came in the final four minutes of the game. The Blazers moved out in front, 88-81, with 5:52 remaining but saw that all vanish in the next two minutes when Golden State went on a 8-0 tear to go ahead, The Warriors got the lead back, 93-92, with 29.7 seconds showing, setting up Randolph s winning shot. Portland s ability to go to the offensive boards played a big role in the win. Nineteen of the Blazers 50 rebounds in the game were at the offensive end and Stoudamire s retrieval of a Derek Anderson miss with 7.1 on the clock was huge. Randolph led the Blazers in scoring with 19 points, Anderson had 16, Stoudamire 15, Darius Miles 14, and Shareef Abdur-Rahim 12. Jason Richardson led the Warriors with 22 points. Field goal shooting was virtually even, Portland connecting on 40.5% of its shots and Golden State 41.5% The Blazers had a rebounding edge. Portland Portland Golden St ,273 Golden St # Portland 87, Golden State Rose Garden, April 7, 2004 (41-37) Theo Ratliff s presence in the middle continued to pay dividends as his shot blocking helped fend off a fourth quarter Golden State rally, allowing the Trail Blazers to pull out an victory in the Rose Garden. The win put Portland four games over.500 for the first time this season and moved them into a tie with Utah and Denver for the eighth and final slot in the Western Conference playoffs. The Blazers are 11-4 since March 7. Portland led at the half, 44-32, and were ahead, with 2:27 to go in the third quarter when the Warriors made their move. They went on a 16-2 run over the next 5:32 to take the lead, Ratliff had three of his game-high eight blocks and five of his game-high 13 rebounds after that. Zach Randolph, who finished with 20 points, put Portland ahead for good on a pair of free throws at 3:09. Darius Miles led Portland in scoring with 21 points, Derek Anderson had 15 and Damon Stoudamire 14. The Warriors Clifford Robinson led all scorers with 23 points. Portland shot 47.2% (34-72) and Golden State 38.9% (35-90), but the Warrors were only 5 of 6 at the line, while the Blazers were 15 of 18. In his first three seasons as a head coach in the NBA, Cheeks has registered a 56.9% winning record ( ).Last year was one marked by change for the former NBA all-star guard. In spite of major lineup shifts, Cheeks was able to guide his team to a respectable record. It was the 15th year in a row and the 22nd time in 24 seasons the Blazers finished at.500 or better. His club made it to the final week of the season before being knocked out of the playoffs, ending an NBA-best run of 21 consecutive years in post-season action. Getting that far, considering all the changes, was a coaching accomplishment. In the course of the 82-game schedule, there were three major trades involving Blazers starters causing him to employ no less than 15 different opening combinations. The most games played by any one starting five was 28. During the season a franchise record 24 different players saw action, 13 of those in starting roles. After posting a record in his rookie NBA season with the Trail Blazers, the second best mark for a first-year coach in franchise history, he followed with a record in That club took Dallas, a team that tied eventual champion San Antonio for the best regular season record, to seven games in the first round of the playoffs.cheeks was named Portland s 10th head coach on June 27, 2001, after serving seven seasons as an assistant under Larry Brown at Philadelphia. He began his coaching career as an assistant to present Blazers assistant Dan Panaggio at the Quad City Thunder of the CBA. In his only season with Quad City, Cheeks helped guide the club to the CBA championship. A Chicago native, he entered the NBA coaching ranks after a distinguished 15-year career as player in the league. The first 11 years were with the Philadelphia 76ers.
