LAST GAME: Bobcats 69, Trail Blazers Oct. 22, 2004, Charlotte Coliseum The Trail Blazers, playing their second preseason game in two nights on the road, got started right, jumping off to a nine-point, 26-17, lead after one quarter at Charlotte. Twenty-six point winners over the Bobcats a week earlier in the Rose City, Portland shot 58.8% (10-17) for the period. Blazers leader was Derek Anderson who scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the quarter. But the Blazers went cold, making only nine baskets and 37 points the rest of the way and handed the expansion Charlotte franchise its first-ever victory, Despite dreadful shooting and careless ball handling, Portland retained the lead, 42-35, at intermission and was clinging to a margin going into the final 12 minutes. But the Blazers shot just 16.7% in the second half, made only five baskets and were 0 for 12 from three-point range. They managed only 6 points on 2-of-16 shooting in the third period. For the game, Portland turned the ball over 29 times, accounting for 24 Charlotte points, more than one of every three Bobcat scores for the night. The Trail Blazers entered the final period dead even at 65 then saw the Raptors surge ahead, But Derek Anderson buried a three to cut the deficit in half and Zach Randolph converted a pair of free throws to close within one. When they did, they never looked back in posting a victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in the expansion team s first-ever visit to Portland. The Blazers shot a sizzling 60.9% from the field, making 43 of their 71 attempts and converted half their three-point attempts. After trailing from the opening jump and looking at a deficit with 4 minutes left in the second quarter, Portland turned it on and closed out the half with an 11-2 run and a intermission lead. Led by Zach Randolph, who scored 10 of his 17 points in the quarter, the Trail Blazers outscored the visitors, 32-21, in the third period and set up opportunity for reserves to get playing time in the last 12 minutes. The Blazers fell behind, 30-15, after one quarter and never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way... The margin ballooned to 28 points, 74-46, with three minutes remaining in the third quarter... Portland shot well enough in the first quarter, making 7 of 14, but turned the ball over 10 times in the period to give away 14 points to the Warriors... For the game, the Trail Blazers coughed up the ball 22 times for 21 Golden State points... Zach Randolph, who struggled with his shots the night before, led all Portland scorers with 16 points in this one... He also led the Blazers in rebounding with nine in a game that saw the Warriors claim a edge on the backboards... 3 Trail Blazers 92, SuperSonics Oct. 13, 2004, Rose Garden The visiting Seattle SuperSonics, who the night before had dispatched the Lakers in Los Angeles, were without their top scorer Ray Allen, but the Trail Blazers had plenty of weapons in their own camp and scored a wire-to-wire victory in their preseason opener in the Rose Garden. Portland built a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Except for a brief Sonics rally at the end of the second quarter which closed the margin to at intermission, the Blazers had a double-digit advantage most of the game and were ahead by as many as 26 points midway through the fourth stanza. Shareef Abdur-Rahim fired the Portland offense early, making all five of his field goals and all three free throws in the first half. The veteran forward finished with 16 points in 27 minutes, making 6 of 7 field goals, his only three-point attempt and the three free throws. Guard Derek Anderson led all scorers in the game with 23 points, converting 6 of 9 field goals, 3 of 5 triples and 8 of 10 free throws. Twelve of the 13 Blazers who saw action put points on the board. Portland, red-hot from beyond the arc where it made 9 of 13 three-pointers (69%), shot a respectable 45.1% from the field for the game. The Blazers, who beat the team with the NBA s best home record, the Sacramento Kings, in Sacramento, returned to the Rose Garden to drop a decision to Golden State. The Warriors came into the game with a 12-game road losing streak. It was the Blazers first home loss to Golden State in 12 games, their fourth straight setback at home and the 10th in the last 12 games. Portland, outrebounded 42-34, never led. 4 Portland 94, Golden State Arena in Oakland, Feb. 20, 2004 (26-28) Zach Randolph s layup off a feed from Damon Stoudamire with 1.8 seconds remaining lifted the Trail Blazers to a victory over the Golden State Warriors in Oakland. The win improved Portland s road record to 9-18 and 7-2 to since Jan. 18. Portland led by one, 76-75, going into the final quarter of a tight game that saw 17 lead changes and 14 ties. Four of those lead exchanges came in the final four minutes of the game. The Blazers moved out in front, 88-81, with 5:52 remaining but saw that all vanish in the next two minutes when Golden State went on a 8-0 tear to go ahead, The Warriors got the lead back, 93-92, with 29.7 seconds showing, setting up Randolph s winning shot. Portland s ability to go to the offensive boards played a big role in the win. Nineteen of the Blazers 50 rebounds in the game were at the offensive end and Stoudamire s retrieval of a Derek Anderson miss with 7.1 on the clock was huge. Randolph led the Blazers in scoring with 19 points, Anderson had 16, Stoudamire 15, Darius Miles 14, and Shareef Abdur-Rahim 12. Jason Richardson led the Warriors with 22 points. The win put Portland four games over.500 for the first time this season and moved them into a tie with Utah and Denver for the eighth and final slot in the Western Conference playoffs. The Blazers are 11-4 since March 7. Portland led at the half, 44-32, and was ahead, with 2:27 to go in the third quarter. It will bring the Blazers up against an Eastern Conference team they play four times in a span of 24 days. A week ago, Portland pulled out an preseason victory in the Canadian city. The regular season schedule has the two teams meeting twice in the first two weeks. The Blazers open a three-game eastern swing with a 9 a.m. PST game on Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Air Canada Centre. The Raptors and Blazers are back in Portland on Saturday of the same week (7 p.m.) for an early wrapup of their two-game season series. After Wednesday s test Toronto, the Trail Blazers close out their eight-game preseason slate Friday at Seattle (7 p.m.) Coach Maurice Cheeks Overall Record: With the Trail Blazers: Seasons in the League: 3 With the Trail Blazers: 3 Heading in to his fourth season at the Portland Trail Blazers helm, Maurice Cheeks is already No. 4 on the club s chart with 140 victories. In his first three seasons as a head coach in the NBA, Cheeks has registered a 56.9% winning record ( ).Last year was one marked by change for the former NBA all-star guard. In spite of major lineup shifts, Cheeks was able to guide his team to a respectable record. It was the 15th year in a row and the 22nd time in 24 seasons the Blazers finished at.500 or better. His club made it to the final week of the season before being knocked out of the playoffs, ending an NBA-best run of 21 consecutive years in post-season action. Getting that far, considering all the changes, was a coaching accomplishment. TRAIL BLAZERS IN THE COMMUNITY READ TO ACHIEVE --- Trail Blazers players, coaches, staff and broadcasters along with BlazerDancers, members of the Trail Blazers Alumni team and the Portland Wheel Blazers teamed up last week to take the National Basketball Association s Read to Achieve campaign to the Metropolitan area. They spread out to host reading celebrations at five elementary schools. In addition to taking books to the schools to encourage boys and girls to make it a habit to read, autographed basketballs were presented to each of the school principals to help raise money for special projects at their schools. All the students and staff at each of the five schools also received tickets to a regular season Trail Blazers game in the Rose Garden in December. Each student was able to take home a book of their own, a gift from the Trail Blazers organization. On top of it all, the Portland Trail Blazers presented checks for $1,000 to each of the districts represented to enhance reading efforts at all of their schools. DAMON S BOWL-A-THON KNOCKS DOWN BUCKS --- Guard Damon Stoudamire s fifth annual Bowl-A-Thon at the Sunset Lanes in Beaverton on Sunday, Oct. 17, raised some $17,000 for Schoolhouse Supplies, a non-profit organization that collects and distributes needed supplies to public schools throughout the Greater Portland area.
