I ve heard him speak at clinics previously and the amount of game knowledge and Xs and Os he shares with coaching peers is staggering. I m not a hip-hop and rap guy, but I m teaching the hip-hop and rap generation Last month at the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association basketball clinic, Kent was back in front of a group of several hundred coaches thirsty to learn. And, while he used most of his time discussing spread offense and proper spacing on the court, Kent dedicated the first 10 to 15 minutes to a much more important topic: teaching life skills and building relationships. Kent initially joked he was coming off a mandatory sabbatical after being let go by his alma mater, the University of Oregon, in 010. Now, four years later, Kent is back on the sidelines coaching at Washington State. Always one to look beyond the court for higher purpose in our game, Kent says his four-year layoff from coaching drove home the point about how crucial it is for all programs, including those at the high school and youth levels, to have a life skills program in place to prepare players for life QUICK HITTER When Larry Doty was coaching (he led Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., for 6 years before retiring in 01), he wanted players to see the ball for 9 minutes and 51 seconds every game. 9:51 was part of of the quick-hitting terminology he used with players. When he said it, players knew they needed to follow the ball more often. after basketball. Kent informed the crowd on hand, 60 percent of NCAA Division I basketball players do not have a father in their home, which places an even greater burden on the coach to serve as a role model and mentor. You d be very wise to have a life skills program at your level right now, Kent told the crowd. Get your team to understand the importance of acting the right way, talking the right way, going to class, being on time it s the same thing as running the floor, playing defense and blocking out. If you can get that kind of discipline and structure back in their lives, which most of us have in our lives, then that will make your coaching job a lot more successful. Kent, a self-described Motown guy, added that near the end of his tenure at Oregon, he was watching a lot of BET (Black Entertainment Television). I m not a hip-hop and rap guy, but I m teaching the hip-hop and rap generation, Kent said while adding you need to know what (outside of basketball) is keeping your players attention. They are going to have a hard time coming up to your level so you need to be creative in your coaching, teaching, discipline and motivation to come down to their level and get them to do what you need them to do. I get it right now you are locked in on starting the season off on the right foot. But, ignore how your players act, what drives them and what is influencing them, then you may be losing more than games. And, how often do you see that same player completely befuddled when a pass zips by him or a dribbler races by him for a hoop? Looking away takes less than a second, which is why he figures an attentive player sees the ball for 9:51 out of 40-minute college game. Watch your players. See if the lose track of the ball. 3 Transition Drills Attacking the rim and scoring on the move are two skills your rim runner needs for success Race Past Defenses With A Hustling Rim Runner One of the best times to catch a defense flat-footed is after a made basket teach your dedicated rim runners to sprint the floor with the reward of a high-percentage shot Abasket is made and the scoring team (typically) relaxes for a split second. That s all you need to race the ball back down the court and score an easy layup at the other end provided you ve drilled the skills necessary to do so at practice. Fast breaking off a made basket isn t a new concept but at the high school and youth levels, it s one that is effective when you utilize a smart inbounder, a talented passer and a hustling rim runner. With a quick inbound pass to the proper place, you start to gain an advantage even against a pressing opponent. Then, it comes down to a ball handler s vision and a rim runner s determination. The rim runner is the person who, after a made basket, sprints down the middle of the floor as fast as possible with eyes and hands ready for a long pass before the defense is set. The rim runner doesn t have to be a forward or center (it doesn t hurt though), but should possess good hands, solid footwork and the ability to score at the rim even when challenged. The rim runner s momentum always is moving forward and toward the basket. Even if the defense does slow your break, having a rim runner at the opposite end of the floor acts as a pressure release with some defensive attention focused far away from the ball. The following two drills are perfect in developing your rim runner while also serving as a healthy warm-up for your team. These drills work quick decisionmaking, accurate passing, hustling, conditioning and scoring at the rim on the move. These two drills appear in a new book from Basketball Coach Weekly focused on warm-up drills. 4 Transition Drills -Man Transition Pushes Tempo Work on attacking layups, outlet passes, running the floor, accurate passes, scoring in transition and conditioning in this all-encompassing drill WHY USE IT Combine conditioning and basketball skills into one drill as three players push hard to run half the court then sprint the length of the floor to score on the move. 1 The first person in line attacks the rim do not allow this to be run at a jog make it game-like The last player in line sprints to the -point line then moves to the opposite wing in anticipation of the outlet pass SET UP Three players are in a line near mid-court with the first person holding a ball. HOW TO PLAY 1 attacks the basket with the dribble and scores the layup. trails behind and grabs the ball out of the net. runs toward the hoop but peels off toward the opposite wing [1]. inbounds the ball to, who then speed-dribbles up the floor. 1 runs the middle of the floor as the rim runner []. sends a long, accurate, sharp pass to 1 on the run. 1 catches it in stride and scores at the rim. Players return to the same initial spot at mid-court and switch positions for the next trip up and down the court []. 5 Transition Drills Depend On The Rim Runner The 4-Man Transition Drill relies upon quick, accurate passes and a rim runner who hustles the length of the floor to score on the move with a defender challenging WHY USE IT Teach players the fastest way up the floor is through a series of quick passes (not the dribble). Show players that a hustling rim runner earns high-percentage shots in the flow of a fast break. 1 1 and hustle to the rim with 1 executing a game-like layup and grabbing the ball out of the net SET UP Four players are in a line near mid-court with the first person holding a ball. The first two players are going to the rim. 6 Passing Drill Warm Up With The 4 Corner Drill Ditch stationary passing and get players on the move by having them pass, cut, catch and pass again to keep the action moving WHY USE IT Use this drill at the start of practice to get players hustling, moving and ready for the energy you expect rather than simply softtossing passes back and forth. SET UP Use half the court and place a player in each corner with one (in this case, it s player 1) holding a ball. 1 Make the initial pass and cut toward the middle gather the next pass and in rhythm fire another pass across the court to HOW TO PLAY 1 passes to and runs a diagonal cut. passes back to 1. 1 catches the ball and fires a pass across to [1]. 1 joins s line. cuts to the middle after passing back to 1. passes to. catches the ball and fires a pass across to 4. 5 moves into play where 1 originated []. joins s line. cuts to the basket. 4 passes to and follows the pass. shoots the layup, then joins 4 s line. 4 rebounds and outlets to the starting line, then 4 joins the starting line []. TECHNIQUE This drill can be confusing for younger players at first but stress the simple concept of pass, catch and pass again. It may take a couple runthroughs but players should get used to passing, cutting, catching and passing across the set. Once they get it, this drill has a quick, fluid pattern to it.
