The Cougars had defeated Houston Baptist earlier this season at the Vadalabene Center on Jan. 29. COMING UP NEXT SIUE will finish the season Tuesday against South Dakota at 7 p.m. The game was changed because of a scheduling conflict for South Dakota. COACH AMANDA LEVENS Levens is in season one with the Cougars after serving the last five seasons as an assistant at the University of Nevada. Regarded as one of the top assistants in the Western Athletic Conference, Levens becomes one of the youngest coaches in all of NCAA Division I basketball. At age 30, she is the third youngest behind Candice Whitaker, of Missouri-Kansas City, and Kendra Faustin, of Niagara. Levens, who was an All American at Arizona State, has Illinois ties. She was an All-Stater from Belvidere High School. RE-SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA This is the second meeting between the Fighting Sioux and the Cougars this season. UND previously defeated SIUE in Grand Forks, N.D. Four Cougars will be honored for the hard work and dedication on the basketball court and in the classroom. There are no hyphens or other words to connect University and Edwardsville. SIU Edwardsville is appropriate, also minus a hyphen. SIUE is acceptable as a second reference. The nickname is Cougars, which is the same for men and women. DELIVERING THE ROCK Ashley Bey has dished out 126 assists this season. This puts Bey tied with Susan Worman ( ) and Misi Clark ( ) eighth on the all-time single season assist list. The single-season record is 166, set by Nancy Swain in Bey, a junior guard, is the only player in school history to record 100 steals and 100 assists in the same season. SIUE won over future Ohio Valley Conference opponent in Eastern Kentucky back on January 19 at the Vadalabene Center. LATE ADDITIONS Sydney Winslow and Jenny Gilman both joined the team 10 games into the season. Both are SIUE volleyball players. Winslow has proven to be a force in the paint, having been SIUE s leading scorer twice. She also posted a double-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds against Houston Baptist at the Vadalabene Center. OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SIUE officially joined the Ohio Valley Conference as its lone non-football school back on July 1. The OVC announced that all SIUE team sports will begin regular season competition in the OVC during the academic year and will be eligible for postseason competition in LEADING WINSLOW Sydney Winslow has led the Cougars in scoring three of the last six games. During the six-game stretch, Winslow 10.7 points per game in 14.2 minutes play per game. WHAT A STEAL Bey ranks second nationally, averaging 3.8 steals per game. Bey has snagged a record 104 steals through 27 games this season. She passed former All-American Misi Clark who set the record of 93 in Bey s season high was 10 against UW-Parkside. BAND OF THIEVES The Cougars average 12.0 steals per game. This ranks 10th on the NCAA Division I list. SIUE has recorded more than 10 steals in a game in 21 of 27 contests this season. CHARITY STRIPE Sydney Winslow leads the Cougars at the free throw percentage, shooting 44 of 50 (72.7 percent) for the season. HER STAPLE IS REBOUNDING Jessie Stapleton leads the Cougars this season with 207 total rebounds. She averages a team leading 7.7 rebounds per game. Stapleton has led SIUE in rebounding in 16 contests this season. DOUBLING UP Four players have recorded doubledoubles this season but not like Stapleton. She has done it seven times this season for a total of 11 in her two seasons at SIUE. The team took a time after practice to make home made Valentines for kids at St. Jude s. The cards were hand delivered to children and their families on Saturday February 14. The team made a total of 60 hand made and decorated cards. This was a fun project for our team to show their creative side with each card designed. Head Coach Amanda Levens. 7 Head Coach Amanda Levens COACH AMANDA LEVENS Amanda Levens enters her first season as the head coach of the SIUE women s basketball program. Levens comes to SIUE from University of Nevada-Reno where she was an assistant coach. Levens, 29, will be one of the youngest head coaches at the NCAA Division I level when the Cougars lace up their shoes for play this fall. Levens will be charged with developing a women s basketball program that reflects SIUE s commitment to excellence, academic integrity, service to the community and commitment to all students. Levens previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Nevada for five years (2003 to 2008). Regarded as one of the top young assistant coaches in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for the past five seasons, Levens was part of Nevada s coaching staff just one year after completing a bachelor s in history at Arizona State University in Levens also completed a master s in higher education administration from Nevada-Reno in As a coach, she recruited a WAC Newcomer of the Year, a junior college All-American and four members of the WAC All-Freshmen team. In five seasons, she has overseen the development of 16 players who have earned All-WAC Academic Honors. In 2007, Nevada made its first-ever postseason appearance at the Women s National Invitational Tournament. The Wolfpack noticed a marked improvement while Levens was with the program. Levens was a part of every facet of the Nevada basketball staff under Head Coach Kim Gervasoni. Her duties were varied, including recruiting, scouting, game preparation, fundraising, player development and community outreach. As a player, Levens was marked as one of the best players in the Arizona State women s basketball history, according to the Sun Devils Web site. She spent two seasons at Arizona State, where she was twice named first team All-PAC-10 and led the Sun Devils to a spot in the NCAA Tournament. She was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American in Levens held records for most 3 pointers in 2001 with 60, and lead in free throws in In her collegiate career Levens totaled 1,322 points averaging 10.6 points per game, with 332 assists, grabbing recovering 310, 2.5 per game and 99 steals. She also spent her first two collegiate seasons at Old Dominion, where she twice helped the Monarchs to an NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearance. Levens signed a free agent contract with the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA in April of Her ties to the Midwest date back only a few years. She was a three-time All-State selection at Belvidere High School in northern Illinois. In the fall of 2000, she was named to the All-Century Girls team by the Rockford Register-Star. The only other coaches in Division I younger than Levens are Candace White-Whitaker, of Missouri- Kansas City, and Kendra Faustin, of Niagara. Amanda Levens picked up her first coaching victory at SIUE in a convincing fashion. Levens and the Cougars next travel for their first NCAA Division I opponent Missouri-Kansas City. Tip-off is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo. On Saturday, it was all SIUE. Jenny Wuest led the Cougars with 18 points, followed by 13 points from Ashley Bey and 11 points each from Jessie Stapleton, Melia Duncan, and Madison Meade.
