Northwestern (2-2-0) will stay in the Land of Lincoln to compete in the NIU Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational The Wildcats look to rebound after going 0-2 last weekend at the UNLV FILA Invitational. Northwestern lost 6-1 to UC Santa Barbara, then fell 2-1 to UNLV in overtime. Despite the losses in Las Vegas, Northwestern is still ranked or receiving votes in a number of national polls. This weekend, the Cats will first square off against the host Northern Illinois (3-0-1) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, 16. While Northwestern hasn t played NIU this season, the coaching staff and team had a chance to watch the Huskies play Western Kentucky and St. Francis (Pa.) in the Third Annual Lakeside Classic earlier this month. NU came out victorious against both teams while NIU beat St. Francis 2-1, and tied WKU, 0-0. The Huskies are off to their best start since 1998 when they began the season NIU remained unbeaten with a pair of 3-2 victories over Western Illinois and Valpraiso. Both contests ended with match winning goals from Chris VanDuerm. In the second game of the weekend, NU faces IUPUI (2-1-1) at 11 a.m., Sunday, 18. The Jaguars are fresh off of capturing the IPFW Classic crown after a 1-0 win over Winthrop, and a 2-2 draw with Niagara, After capturing the classic title, a pair of IUPUI players swept the Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Week Awards. Junior goalkeeper Peter Brasovan was named defensive player of the week, while the Jaguars Vangel Nacovski was given the offensive award. Jaro Pylypczak scored the Wildcats lone goal against UNLV, his first goal of the season. Pylypczak is currently second on the team in total points. 2 Head Coach Tim Lenahan Tim Lenahan is in his fifth season as head men s soccer coach for Northwestern University. When Lenahan arrived in Evanston, Ill., prior to the 2001 season, his goal was simple, Lenahan yet ambitious. He looked to take a program that hadn t won a single game the year before his arrival, and build it into a perennially competitive program. After four seasons with the Wildcats, he has achieved that goal and more. Upon his arrival, Lenahan, a twotime national coach of the year finalist, began compiling outstanding recruitingclasses that are largely responsible for the team s recent success, and coached the team to their first.500-season since Last season, Lenahan led the Cats into the national spotlight with one of college soccer s most remarkable turnarounds. His team finished with the program s most wins over Division I opponents-made the Big Ten Tournament championship match and NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Wildcats third place Big Ten finish was the best in program history, and Northwestern was included in national ranking for the first time, finishing No. 17 according to the College Soccer News poll. For his efforts, Lenahan was named the NSCAA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, his second Regional Coach of the Year honor. He also landed sophomore Gerardo Alvarez (first team) and junior Brad Napper (third team) on the all-region squad-the Wildcats first such accolades in program history. Lenahan came to Northwestern from Lafayette College, where he solidified his reputation as a builder of programs-in just three seasons, his teams won two Patriot League regular- season titles, two postseason crowns and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. 3 NU NOTES... Experience on the Pitch This season, Northwestern returns every starter and 24 letterwinners from the 2004 squad that had the best season in program history. A Hermann for Gerardo? The NSCAA announced that junior forward Gerardo Alvarez is on the 2005 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy watch list. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding collegiate soccer player, and is considered the most prestigious individual honor in collegiate soccer. The list includes 25 players from around the country, including four selections-alvarez, Jacob Peterson (IU), Brian Plotkin (IU) and Jed Zayner-from the Big Ten. Alvarez is the first player in Northwestern soccer history to be nominated for the award. A list of 15 semifinalists will be announced in November, with three finalists selected in early December. Alvarez was also named a200 5 third-team preseason all-american by collegesoccernews.com. Super Seniors The class of 2006 is the first full recruiting class compiled by head coach Tim Lenahan. The group has played an integral role in the program s turnaround. The group includes Eric Brin, Dan Carew, Kevin Earnest, Brad Napper, Jaro Pylypczak, Alexander Renzi, Sammy Semwangu, Adam Sirois, Dave Vargas and Chris Zdenek. Freshman Phenom Midfielder David Roth had a freshman season to remember in Roth set the Northwestern and Big Ten records for assists in a season with 14. He earned All- America honors from Topdrawersoccer.com and Collegesoccernews.com. If not for Roth s 14, teammate Gerardo Alvarez would have broken the Northwestern s single-season assist record with nine. A Broken Record As just a junior, Gerardo Alvarez is four assists, nine goals and 22 points shy of setting Northwestern career records in all three categories. Over his first two seasons, Alvarez is averaging eight assists, 10.5 goals and 29 points per year. NORTHWESTERN MEN S SOCCER On Top of the Big Ten In 2004, the Wildcats were tops in the Big Ten in goals (52), assists (55) and points (159). Consecutive Crowns With the Wildcats 2-1 win over Western Kentucky and their 1-0 win over St. Francis (Pa.) last weekend, Northwestern claimed its second consecutive Lakeside Classic title. In addition back-to-back tournament crowns, the way in which the Cats won was starkly similar to last year s run. Last year, Northwestern beat UW-Green Bay 4-1, then beat Butler in a double-overtime thriller, 2-1. In the 2005 tournament, the Wildcats topped Western Kentucky 2-1, and again went to double overtime in the second match. This year, senior Kevin Earnest came through with the match-winner in the 102nd minute give the Cats a 1-0 victory over St. Francis (Pa.). The Lakeside Classic All-Tournament included the following players: Kevin Earnest (NU), Steven Medlock (WKU), Justin McGrane (NIU), Richard Mupfudze (WKU), Brad North (NU), Bobby Pipech (St.F), David Roth (NU), Jeremy Tice (St.F), Kevin Woerner (NIU) and Curt Zastrow (NIU). The Wildcats own senior defender Brad Napper was voted tournament Most Valuable Player. Seriously Sirois Following the Lakeside Classic, topdrawersoccer.com highlighted the play of senior defender Adam Sirois. He was named Top Drawer Soccer Big Ten Conference Performer of the Week for the defender position. Fightin Freshmen Two of Northwestern s six freshmen got their first taste of Division I soccer when they logged significant minutes en route to the Lakeside Classic title. Midfielder Tyler Voigt who was selected as a collegesoccernews.com freshman to keep an eye on came off the bench in both games. Goaltender Misha Rosenthal made the start at goalkeeper for both of last weekend s matches. He recorded his first collegiate save off a rebound shot from 12 yards out against Western Kentucky. He stopped two of the three Hilltopper shotson-goal, and logged all 90 minutes in the cage. He followed up his impressive debut by recording his first career shutout against St. Francis (Pa.), holding the Red Flash scoreless for 102:25 minutes. Big Time Dominance Collegesoccernews.com has selected the Big Ten Conference as the second-toughest men s soccer conference in the country, only the Atlantic Coast Conference was ranked higher. The story read that the level of parity that currently exists in the league is unbelievable. The Big Ten sent six teams (Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State and Penn State) to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, the most of any conference in the country. First-Time Foes After the UNLV Invitational, the Wildcats have faced four consecutive opponents for the first in school history. Matches with St. Francis (Pa.), UC Santa Barbara, UNLV and Western Kentucky have all been first time meetings. The Cat are 2-0 against these unfamiliar opponents with wins over St. Francis (Pa.) and Western Kentucky. Cat s in the Big Ten Although the season is young, the Wildcats are at or near the top of the Big Ten in several categories. Northwestern leads the Big Ten in corners (24), is tied for fourth in saves (12) and goals (5). Individually, Brad North is tied for fourth in total shots (11) and goals (2). Sophomore David Roth is tied for third in assists (2).
