He has scored in double figures in 51 of his 59 career games. Wesley Person is sixth all-time in Troy s D-I history and eighth overall with pointers in his career... he is four shy of tying Dandrea Evans for seventh place overall and is six back of Jacob Hazouri for fifth on the Division I list. Wesley Person has made pointers per game this season, which is the 18th most in the country and the fourth most among all underclassmen in the nation. Last season, Person became the first Troy freshman to earn conference freshman of the year honors and was the lone freshman on the All-Sun Belt team. Wesley Person is 12th among active Division I players with pointers per game over his career. John Walton III has moved into fifth place on the Troy career rebounding list (D1 era) with 407; he is just three shy of Cameron Boozer for fourth place. Wesley Person moved into sixth on the Troy DI single-season scoring list with 512 points; he becomes the seventh Trojan to reach the 500-point mark in a season in Troy s DI era; Person is just six 3-pointers shy of setting the Troy DI single-season record with 99. John Walton III is currently fifth on the Troy DI single-season rebounding list with 242 this season. He enters the final game of the season just seven back of fourth place and 10 back of third place. Senior forward John Walton III has been one of the hottest players in the Sun Belt. Over the past 10 games, Walton is averaging 15.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Troy s victory over Georgia State marked the first time since the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Tournament that the Trojans won a game with 54 points or fewer. Troy defeated Western Kentucky in the opening round of the SBC Tournament that season and played in the NIT that year after winning the SBC regular season title. Freshman forward Jordon Varnado is sixth in the NCAA among freshman in field goal percentage (48.4). Jordon Varnado became the first freshman in Troy history to start his career with a three straight 20+ point games (21, 26, 24) Wesley Person and John Walton III have started 59 straight games for the Trojans, while Shawn Hopkins has started the last nine games after Jeremy Hollimon started the first 21 contests and 22 overall. Troy scored 80+ points in three straight games for the first time (in the same season) since the season when it did so against Western Kentucky (87), FIU (86) and UL Lafayette (81)... the run ended with a 61-point performance against Little Rock, which entered the game leading the country allowing 55.2 points per game. 3 STAFF PHIL CUNNINGHAM HEAD COACH CAMPBELLSVILLE, 1990 Third season as Troy s head basketball coach. In the season, led the Trojans to an record including an appearance in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championships. Named the sixth head coach in Troy history in March Over the past 15 years, Cunningham s teams have played in the postseason 11 times, including seven trips to the NCAA tournament. Prior to being a head coach, he named one of the top 25 assistant coaches in the NCAA by Rivals.com and was recognized by The Hoop Scoop recruiting publication as one of the top NCAA Division I men s basketball assistant coaches. Cunningham s teams at Miss. State and WKU made 11 postseason appearances in 13 years, including seven NCAA Tournaments. The Bulldogs were SEC champions in 2004 and were SEC West Champs five years. SEC Tournament champions in 2002 and Played at Kentucky Wesleyan; won a NCAA Division II National Championship in Transferred to Campbellsville College, where he finished his career ranked among the school s all-time leaders in career assists. ON THE BENCH MARCUS GRANT ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH MISSISSIPPI STATE, 1995 Previously worked at Mississippi State. In his eight years at MSU, Grant was a part of six postseason appearances, including three NCAA Tournament appearances (two SEC Western Division championships and one SEC Tournament championship). Played for Mississippi State from , helping lead the Bulldogs to the 1995 NCAA Sweet 16 in his senior season Played professionally overseas for eight years BEN FLETCHER ASSISTANT COACH TROY, 2004 Played for Troy from Under Fletcher s guidance in , Hunter Williams made 98 3-pointers, setting the Troy single-season record, which was previously held by Fletcher. Fletcher led the Trojans to a Sun Belt regular season championship in and a NIT berth. Finished his career with 160 made 3-pointers, the sixth most in Troy s Division I history. Assistant coach to former NBA and collegiate stand-out Todd Day Is the third all-time leading scorer in Colorado s state history with 2,369 points. TROJAN ARENA The Trojans are entering their fourth season in the 5,200-seat Trojan Arena in The jewel of Sun Belt basketball facilities features seven luxury suites, seats 5,200 for basketball and features a state-of-the-art sound and video system. The state-of-the-art arena is equipped with two 767-square foot high-definition video boards, a continuous ribbon board around the arena and LED display scorers tables. Trojan Arena also houses the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame which opened in August 2012 and now has 27 members. The facility also features a six-basket practice court, coaches offices for basketball, volleyball and track and field, film room and more. Design support for Trojan Arena was provided by Populous whose other projects include Yankee Stadium, the London Olympics and Wimbledon Tennis Club. The Trojans played their previous 37 seasons in Sartain Hall. The Mavericks have set school records for 3-pointers in a season (267) and rebounds (1,306). UT Arlington has won 14 games by double digits this season. LAST TIME OUT FOR TROY vs. UT ARLINGTON (L, 63-90) January 14, 2016 TROY, Alabama UT Arlington used a 37-4 run over a nine-minute period in the first and second halves to pull away from Troy in a Sun Belt Conference victory Thursday night at Trojan Arena. Troy raced out to a lead over the game s first 12 minutes thanks to 13 points from Jordon Varnado. However, the Trojans made just one of their next 14 shots from the floor, while the Mavericks (13-2, 4-0) connected on 10-of-16, including six from behind the arc, to take a lead into the half. Varnado finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, a pair of assists and a steal to lead Troy (5-11, 0-5), while Jeremy Hollimon added nine points and Jaro Moravek finished with six points and five rebounds. B.J. Miller came off the bench to score six points, dish out four assists and grab three steals. UT Arlington stayed hot after the break as it hit 12 of its first 19 shots and finished the half shooting 57.1 percent (20-of-35) from the floor. The Mavs lived from behind the 3-point line as they hit 14-of-35 from beyond the arc in the game. 6 LAST TIME OUT FOR TROY SAN MARCOS, Texas Texas State shot 64 percent from 3-point range and 56 percent from the floor as the Bobcats knocked off Troy, 78-57, Thursday night in Strahan Coliseum. Kavin Gilder-Tilbury hit on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 26 points to lead Texas State (13-15, 7-12 Sun Belt). The Bobcats finished the game connecting on 9-of-14 from beyond the 3-point stripe, while the Trojans hit on just 5-of-20 (25 percent). John Walton III led Troy (9-21, 4-15) with his fifth double-double of the season as he finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds to continue his hot streak at the end of the year. Over the past 10 games, Walton has averaged 15.3 points and 9.2 rebounds. Wesley Person finished with 11 points and extended his streak with a 3-pointer out to 59 straight games, as he connected on two in the game. Jordon Varnado added six points and seven rebounds, while Jeremy Hollimon finished with nine points and Daniel Peace had seven points. Troy used a 14-4 run over the closing minutes of the first half to close a 14-point deficit down to just four with 1:31 to play. 7 TROY NOTES PERSON s PEDIGREE Wesley Person comes from a distinguished basketball background. His father, Wesley Person Sr., and uncle, Chuck Person, were both standouts at Auburn, and went on to have successful careers in the NBA. NUMERO UNO Wesley Person was tabbed Troy s first-ever Division I Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. He was also named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, which is voted on by the league s coaches. Following the season, Person was named to the All-Sun Belt Third team. He is the first underclassman in Troy s Division I history to be named to an all-conference team. TREY GOOD» Wesley Person has the longest active streak of games with a made 3-pointer in the NCAA at UC Riverside s Jaylen Bland went 0-for-2 on Jan. 2 to end his streak at 43 straight games with a 3-pointer). Person matched his career-high with five treys against North Texas on his way to 24 points before pouring in a career-best six treys in just the first half alone against Paine. After failing to reach doublefigures against Little Rock (just sixth time in his career), Person hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 at Georgia State. Ranks 18th nationally in 3-pointers per game and is fourth among underclassman in the category. In the season, Person averaged pointers per game, which was the second-most among returners in the Sun Belt. PERSON S POINTS Wesley Person ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in scoring average with 17.1 points per contest. Through 59 career games, Person has led the Trojans 22 times in points, while having 51 games 26 this season) with 10+ points. He has scored 15 or more points in 24 contests (16 this season) and has two games with 30+ points. In his career, Person has 29 games with 3+ treys, including 18-of-30 games this season. VARNADO RULES Jordon Varnado currently ranks second on the team and 13th in the league in scoring average, averaging 13.2 points per game. He is second in the SBC among freshmen in scoring Varnado is shooting a team-best.484 percent from the floor and is second with a 32.2 percentage from 3-point range. His field goal percentage is the sixth best among freshmen in the NCAA. Varnado became the first freshman in Troy s Division I history to start out their career with three 20+ point games. The next closest freshman to do it... the 2014 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Wesley Person started with 2-of-3 games in 20+ figures. The freshman is closing in on Troy s Division I freshman points record (412), set by Wesley Person in Through 30 games, Varnado has tallied 397 points, averaging 13.2 per contest. To pass Person, Varnado would have to score 16 points in Troy s final game of the season at UT Arlington. VARNADO s VAULT Freshman Jordon Varnado has a pedigree to talk about. His older brother, Jarvis, played for Mississippi State and was recruited by now Troy head coach Phil Cunningham. Jarvis, a power forward, played for the Bulldogs from He led the NCAA in blocks during the season, tying Shaquille O Neal for the most blocks in a season in the SEC. In , he broke that record with 170 blocks. Jarvis, to this day, owns the NCAA Division I all-time shot block leader with 564 blocks. No one has come close to breaking that record in over 13 years. Varnado was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year three consecutive years (2008, 2009, 2010). He ended his collegiate career with over 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 blocks, just one of two to do so. Jarvis was drafted by the Miami Heat with the 41st pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He now plays for Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari of the Italian Serie A. FRESH-MAN Jordon Varnado garnered Sun Belt Student-Athlete of the Week honors during the first week.
