5 The Combined Site Schedule The Gator women will host two first round matches on Friday, May 11 and a second round contest on Saturday, May 12. The Gator men will play their first round matches on Saturday and the second round on Sunday, May 13. The winning team from each of the 16 regionals will advance to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the NCAA Round of 16 and beyond. The Championship Site This season the Wake Forest Tennis Complex plays host to the combined men s and women s tournament from the Round of 16 through the final. The women s Round of 16 begins on Thursday, May 17, while men s Round of 16 action commences on Friday, May 18. Women s First and Second Rounds in Gainesville at a Glance The eighth-ranked Gators received the No. 9 seed in the 64-team draw. Florida (18-8) faces Horizon League Champion Youngstown State (16-10), in its NCAA First Round Contest on Friday, May 11 at 2 p.m. ET. The other NCAA Women s First Round match played in Gainesville will be held on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. ET and features 17thranked Florida State (17-12) vs. North Florida (17-7). The winners of both first round matches will meet Saturday at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the championship site in Winston-Salem, where the round of 16 resumes May 17. Florida at the NCAA Championships UF has been selected to host first and second round matches every year since the NCAA Women s Championships expanded its field to 64 teams in The Gators have earned a berth into 36 of the 37 NCAA Championships, missing only the 1986 event. The Gators have won seven NCAA team titles: 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2011, 2012 and UF has advanced to at least the NCAA semifinals 24 times in the last 30 years. Quick Glance at the NCAA Field of 64 Florida played 15 of its 26 matches this season against teams that made the NCAA Tournament field of 64 and posted a 10-7 record versus those clubs. The Florida women s team is one of 11 SEC schools in the 2018 field. This is the first time the Gators are the No. 9 seed. A Florida Win in the NCAA First Round Would... Improve its Round of 64 record to 20-0 all-time Advance the Gators to the NCAA Round of 32 for the 20th time Provide Coach Roland Thornqvist the 495th win of his 17-year Gator career Gators at a Glance The Gators have won the doubles point in 15 of 26 matches this year and are 14-1 when doing so. (loss at Oklahoma State) Four of Florida s eight losses were against teams that earned one of the 16 national seeds, while five of its wins came against top-16 seeded teams. The Gators have won two of their last four matches, as well as four of their last six entering the NCAA Championships first round. Florida began the year losing four of its first seven matches, which included losses to Florida State, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech. Ironic Revenge Tour? Should the NCAA seedings hold true and the Gators defeat Youngstown State in the first round, they would then play four consecutive teams that beat them during the 2018 regular season: Florida State in the second round, Oklahoma State in the round of 16, Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals and Georgia Tech in the semifinals! Those four teams handed Florida its first four losses in 2018 and in this exact order that they could meet in the NCAA Championships. Gators vs. the Gainesville Regional Teams UF vs. Youngstown State: The Series First meeting between the team teams Of Note: Youngstown State enters the NCAA Championships having won its fifth consecutive Horizon League Championship. Welcome: The Penguins are the only team not from the Sunshine State competing at the Gainesville Regional. Weather.com Forecast (high/low): Thursday Friday Saturday Youngstown, OH: 72/48 70/57 82/64 Gainesville: 90/64 94/65 92/69 UF vs. Florida State: The Series 58-Match Series: Florida leads 56-2 (UF at home 34-0; away 22-1; neutral 0-1) Streak: While the Gators have dominated the series overall, the Seminoles won this year s regular-season meeting, 4-1, on February 5 in Orlando. The outcome snapped Florida s seven-match win streak against FSU, as well as its 27-match win streak versus other teams from the Sunshine State. The Only Other Blip: Prior to this season, the Gators lone blemish in the series was a 5-2 decision on Feb. 28, 2009, when then-no. 13-ranked Florida was tripped up by No. 24-ranked FSU in Tallahassee. Familiar Faces: Immediately prior to taking his currently position as head coach of the Gators, Roland Thornqvist spent three years in a similar role at his alma mater North Carolina. Current FSU head coach Jennifer Hyde served as Thornqvist s assistant coach in Chapel Hill from UF vs. North Florida: The Series Possible First Meeting between the team teams Of Note: Despite being just 61 miles apart, a match up on Saturday would be the first ever meeting between the two schools from the Sunshine State. Flying High: The Ospreys captured the Atlantic Sun title for the fourth consecutive season and are the No. 3 seed in this Gainesville regional. Good Time for a Break When the team takes the court for its NCAA First Round match against Youngstown State, it will have been 20 days since Florida last played a competitive dual match. The Gators last played on April 22 vs. No. 1 seed Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament Final. The longest individual singles win streak by a Gator entering the NCAA First Round is two by Peggy Porter, who was the only Gator to win twice in the SEC Tournament without a loss. The Gators have played 11 matches on true away courts (9-2) and seven at neutral sites (2-5). Road Warriors After opening the season with two home matches, the Gators embarked on a nine-match road trip that took the team to five different states (Florida, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, California and Mississippi) in three different time zones. Florida posted a 5-4 record during that span and did not play a home match during the entire month of February. Hi Mom! The Gators have played three matches televised live this season but are 0-3 in those contests. The most recent TV match was on April 22 against Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament final broadcast live by the SEC Network. Florida has been honored to participate in a pair of College Match- Day events that were played at the USTA National Campus. Both matches were televised live on the Tennis Channel. Against Texas, singles was played first due to a limited television broadcast time. The Gators dropped both of those matches, falling to Florida State (4-1, Feb. 3) and Texas (4-0, April 1). The Georgia Bulldogs were picked as the overall champion and was Vanderbilt selected third. In the ITA national rankings released Jan. 24, Vanderbilt is No. 2 in the country, while Florida is No. 3 and Georgia is No. 4. Other SEC teams in the top-25 include No. 13 Auburn, No. 18 Arkansas, No. 20 LSU, No. 21 Kentucky, No. 23 Ole Miss and No. 25 South Carolina. The SEC is brutal this year. This is the most balanced I ve seen in my 17 years at Florida, UF Coach Roland Thornqvist said. Last year, we didn t win the league and we won the national championship. I think this year could be the same. There could be as many as four or five teams that could win the league and four or five can do really well nationally. Our season before the SEC season begins is tough with Stanford, Oklahoma State and the list goes on and on, so we ll be ready from an experience standpoint before we start lacing it up against SEC competition. The preseason poll is voted on by the women s tennis head coach at each institution and is based on a vote. The complete tally for the poll: Preseason Poll Team...Points 1.
