1 February 2018 Newsletter 4 th Floor, 820 N Orleans Street Chicago, IL (312) HAPPY FEBRUARY Stay Warm at the Club! January was certainly a challenge this year, and the members of Chicago Duplicate Bridge have stepped up to meet it. We had record attendance for a January on some of the coldest days so far. We have some very special events planned for the coming weeks to keep you busy during these cold winter months. At the end of this newsletter you ll find more details about the Semiannual Individual Game, one of the most entertaining games we plan. There s also info about the REACH Games, a new ACBL experiment that provides a great opportunity to earn gold points without leaving our home base. Upcoming Special Games Tuesday Evening January 30 Semiannual Individual Game 6:30pm* Sunday Afternoon February 4 th SWISS Teams Game 1:00pm February 4-10 Club Championships February 5-9 REACH Games (all afternoon games)* Wednesday, February 14 Valentine s Day February Charity Pairs Friday Evening February 23 Mentor/Mentee Game February s full schedule can be found at by clicking Calendar below the News on the Home Page. You ll have the opportunity to have your name on one of our plaques. Food will be served at 5:30 pm, so please sign up so that we can cater correctly. Why should I play? This is one of the most enjoyable events in our calendar. The game is relaxed and more social; you will get to meet and play with many different club members whom you may not normally talk to. You get your name on the wall if you win, and it pays extra points like a junior fund game. Who should play? Everyone from rank beginners to experts. Playing with people who are better or worse than you can be a lot of fun. For beginning players, this is a great opportunity to play a few hands with some better players, and ask for some pointers. How does it work?
5 You will be assigned a different partner every one or two boards, and play with about 24 different partners. The director will give you directions for where to sit each round. You just play bridge and enjoy yourself. Our documents: How will I know what conventions we are playing? There will be *very* little time (one-minute max) to discuss agreements. The more experienced player is expected to cater to the newer player, so the newer player would do well to prepare a list of conventions he or she knows. We suggest you play either the cdb-individual-good player card in the link above, the ACBL yellow card (linked above), or a list of conventions provided by a newer player. How should I prepare if I am a beginning player? Prepare the list of conventions you know from the list below. It is there to help you and your partners. Your more experienced partner should be able to absorb it quickly. Better still, bring a convention card and talk to a mentor about filling it. How should I prepare if I am an intermediate player? Check that you can handle being presented with a beginner card/list of conventions. Download and print the cdb-individual-good-player card. Clearly mark what you do not want to play, or have never heard of (for when you play with equal or better players), or bring a simple convention card that you like to use when you play with better players. Please be nice to the newer players and play at their level. How should I prepare if I am a better player? Please read the suggestions for the beginner and intermediate players. Please be nice to the newer players and play at their level. Look over the cdb-individual-good-players card and be prepared to play it if newer players want to. Be ready to play with the beginners and read their convention list. Feel free to play your card if you are playing with a regular partner. This is not a mentor/mentee game, so please do not give unsolicited lessons. From Monday, February 5 through Friday the 9 th, all afternoon club games will be participating in the REACH (Saturday the 3 rd *may* also be eligible). All CDB afternoon sections including our beginner games are eligible to participate. CDB is also considering using The Common Game for all games, which you can read about at The REACH operates on top of the regular club game. If you don't want the extra points, you pay only the $11/13 game fee. If you want to be eligible for the extra points, you pay the usual $11/13 game fee, and also a $30 REACH fee. Everyone is welcome at the club game without paying the $30 REACH fee, but you just won't be eligible for the extra points.
7 Everyone who wants to participate in the REACH must sign up ahead of time at No one needs to pay the extra $30 to play. We suggest that you should not pay the $30 if: you are playing only one eligible session; you will not be eligible for the points you don't expect to place in the top 40% of your flight you do not care about the extra gold points you want to do this primarily to support the club financially. The extra fee goes to the district and USBF international teams. The $30 REACH fee is a flat fee for the whole tournament and covers all eligible sessions (including those at other participating clubs). Your tournament result is determined by your two best scores as an individual, even if they are scored with different partners. Results for the REACH will be available at: You will enter your ACBL number and the game date. Full details on the REACH can be found at: Frequently asked questions: The ACBL is experimenting with a new tournament format in running the REACH, and there is a lot of additional information about the new things they are trying out if you care to read about it (like pools to award points based on field strength). The ACBL is going for big changes, so expect more experiments like this in the upcoming months. We want to hear your opinions about this. Please send any feedback to msdyer@gmail.com.
