Jim Coke, President Unit 505 Board of Directors Hello All!! The board elected me Unit 505 president for This was done a year early (Katherine is term limited after this year) so there would be an orderly transition to the new president with Katherine available for her guidance. Thank you Katherine for all your hard work as our president over the past few years and your willingness to help me with the transition into the job! For those of you that don't know me, I've been playing duplicate bridge for just over 5 years. In that time, I've become a director and currently direct 3 games a week. I've also been on the U505 Board for the past two years as secretary for the board. I'm a retired engineer from Intel. I have two beloved daughters who live in the area. Going forward, I would like to continue the great things that U505 does, promoting the game, as well as holding sectionals and unit games. I believe we need to focus more on bridge education to bring new players into the game. This means focusing on both the newly retired as well as youth. The newly retired are an excellent target audience because they are in the midst of a major life change and frequently are looking for a mental challenge as well as a new social network. But the youth are also necessary because they are our long term life blood, becoming our new super stars. A look at the list of past King / Queen of Bridge awarded to the top high school seniors is virtually a list of current and future Bridge Hall of Fame members! So we will be looking at ways to introduce the game to these two groups. Happy New Year and I hope to see you at the bridge table! Jim
On December 9 our Unit held our annual Holiday Party and game at SBC. Outgoing President, Katherine Ewing and 2019 new President, Jim Coke handed out gifts while Pat Ingoglia and Mary Ose helped with the wonderful potluck luncheon!

JANUARY SPECIAL EVENTS As of press deadline the January schedule was not yet available. Check the website for January events at: REMINDER: The Saturday and Sunday afternoon games currently award 3-4 times as many masterpoints per table as the other weekly sessions. That is possible only because the director donates $4 per table to an ACBLdesignated charity. Let's reward this enterprise by supporting those games! The Tuesday 299er and Saturday 299er sections also are Charity Games, with extra Masterpoints. Ronnie McMurdie and Dick Jones tie the knot. Ronnie and Dick Jones got married in Reno on Sat. Dec. 15, At Monday s Dec.17th game at SBC, director John Hughes announced there was a new person in the room and her name was Veronica Jones. Best wishes to you both! 10 Sacramento Bridge Center had a pot luck on December 15 th. 21 Tables attended and brought covered dishes. The bridge club furnished baked spiral ham and turkey breast. Every thing was delicious. Ali and open game with 12 tables 299er game with 9 tables We had our first tree at this site and players donated lights and ornaments. We had a charity drive for the Mustard Seed School and Mary s House. By Dec 15 there was no room under the tree. We had many large boxes of toys and $1, in cash to delivery to the school. And Ted Muller spent the day trying to teach his teddy bear (25 years old) how to play bridge!
Christmas Eve day was celebrated with a Merry Christmas cake! Joy O Dell brought homemade ornaments and hand painted ceramic figurines that she had made over the years. She decided it was time to donate them to the club for everyone to enjoy.
Nicely done, Dennis! Thanks for a great article in the District 21 newsletter.
