2 Ohio Women s Basketball History As a charter member of the Women s Sports and Recreation Department (WRA) of Ohio University, the women s basketball team first took to the court in 1965 under the direction of head coach Bev Smith. According to the 1965 Athena, the WRA was created to provide for and encourage the development of permanent interest in wholesome recreational activities such as tennis, hockey, softball, basketball and golf. Contests were held between dormitories and sororities to determine champions. It wasn t until the season that the program became part of the Women s Intercollegiate Athletics (WICA) organization and began to receive funding not from education, but from athletics, that women s basketball truly became its own entity at Ohio. Nancy Schaub (far left) and her team. Sue Reed and Alexa Jaffers in the old Grover Center. At the time, nine sports in the WICA had to spread around a $3,500 operating budget and a $13,500 budget for salaries. The women s basketball squad picked up wins against Cincinnati and the Ohio State branch at Newark while limiting opponents to 43.6 points per game compared to its average of 45.5 points. The season was a significant one in the history of the program because of Title IX, which gave the WICA a huge financial boost. Behind the new budget of $48,000, the program was then able to grant athletic scholarships. Kathy Martin coached the team for one season (5-8) in 1977 before giving way to Gwen Hoover in The Bobcats went 10-8 during her first year and over the next two seasons the program s last years as a member of the WICA. Head coach Becky DeStefano guided the first Ohio team as a member of the newly created Mid-American Conference in The Bobcats struggled early in their new conference with an eighthplace finish (9-16, 3-7) during the season before improving significantly by placing fourth (15-12, 11-7) and qualifying for the school s first trip to the in Nancy Thorne and Pat Lilienthall Leading the way that historic season was a 5-foot-11 freshman from Coshocton named Caroline Mast, who would go on to become the school s all-time scoring leader. In addition to setting eight other career records, she tallied 2,449 points during her four-year career. Mast was named to the Freshman All-American team. The Bobcats improved on their fourth-place finish the following year with a 13-5 MAC record (14-13 overall). As a reward, Ohio hosted its first game. Again, it was Mast leading the way with 22.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. The sophomore also 90 Make it Happen.

3 Ohio Women s Basketball History For the first time, athletic scholarships were granted to the team. holds the distinction of being the first Bobcat to be named MAC Player of the Year. Amy Prichard, a 23-year-old native of Lima, became the Bobcats seventh head coach in 1984 and led the Bobcats to perhaps the greatest season in the history of the program. The Bobcats went 24-2 during the regular season, including a 16-2 mark in the MAC, en route to their first ever MAC regular-season and tournament titles. That Ohio team set 10 school records that Becky DeStefano with captains Diane Martin, Patrice Marshall and Darla Dutro. Gwen Hoover Players from Kathy Martin s sqaud. still stand today. At the conclusion of the season, Prichard became the first Ohio head coach to win MAC Coach of the Year honors. Marsha Reall replaced Prichard in After back-to-back seventh place finishes in the MAC during her first two seasons, Reall began to turn the program around in The Bobcats went during the season and finished second with a 13-5 mark in the MAC. For her efforts, Reall was named MAC Coach of the Year. The Bobcats won their second MAC championship in It was also the second straight MAC Coach of the Year award for Reall. Lynn Bria took over the helm for the Bobcats in The native of Charleston, W.Va., resigned in March 2006 after posting a overall record. In April 2006, Sylvia Crawley became Ohio s tenth head women s basketball coach. Crawley led the Bobcats to an 18-win season, which is the best coaching debut of any Bobcat head coach in the history of the program. That year, the Bobcats also earned their first ever win over a ranked opponent by defeating Bowling Green on its home court, snapping the Falcons 39-game conference winning streak and 29-game home winning streak. With 2,449 points, Mast finished her career as Ohio s and the MAC s all-time leading scorer. Caroline Mast Make it Happen. 91

4 Ohio Women s Basketball History Jackie Bonus Marti Heckman Kim Walton Amy Prichard Bobcats The Bobcats improved even more on the merits of the squad. Ohio recorded 20 wins on the season, the third most in program history. The squad also notched 10 wins in MAC play to mark just the seventh time ever that the Bobcats have recorded double-digit wins in conference action. During the season, the squad produced an impressive three-consecutive MAC East players of the week in Lauren Kohn (twice) and Jennifer Bushby. Ohio capped off its successful year at the end with an impressive run in the conference tournament. Entering the tournament as the third seed in the East, the Bobcats picked up victories over Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan to advance to the semifinals against Bowling Green. That game proved to be one for Bobcat basketball lore as Ohio held on for a double-overtime win thanks to Quintana Ward s driving layin with just under 20 seconds remaining. The Bobcats battled Miami hard in the championship game, but they came up just short of the victory and an NCAA Tournament berth. Jenny Poff and Lauren Hmiel were both named to the all-tournament team. Kathy Detillion Individually, Ohio saw its share of successes as well. Kohn was named to the All-MAC First Team, and Quintana Ward moved into second place on the school s all-time assists list. Kohn also became just the second Bobcat to garner Academic All-American Honors as she was named to the second team. 92 Make it Happen.

5 Ohio Women s Basketball History Cathy Szall Holly Skeen Lori Moorman Marsha Reall Sylvia Crawley helped direct the Bobcats to two of the most winning seasons in school history, including the campaign, where Ohio won 20 games and advanced to the finals of the MAC Tournament. Dawn Heideman Molly Sito Lynn Bria On May 9, 2008, a new era in Ohio women s basketball began as Semeka Randall was named the ninth coach in the program s history, replacing Sylvia Crawley.
