2 Master coach from The First Tee of Pine Mountain fulfills a life-long dream with his son at iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links by Jodi Davis, The First Tee Andrew Caldwell 16 years old The First Tee of Pine Mountain Donnie Caldwell Andrew s father and coach Donnie Caldwell, a father of three, has been a coach for The First Tee of Pine Mountain in Southeast Kentucky for 18 years. Donnie has had 14 of his First Tee participants earn the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play at the iconic Pebble Beach. Donnie is also one of nine of The First Tee s master coaches (the highest level in the coach program) and he has trained coaches for The First Tee across the country for eight years. (There are over 3000 active coaches a year). When Donnie s youngest son Andrew was six years old, Donnie gifted him with a hat from Pebble Beach. It was then that Andrew s dream to play at Pebble Beach came to life. Andrew, who is now 16 years old, earned the opportunity to play at this year s PURE Insurance Championship and is at the tournament with his dad for the first time ever! Andrew is Donnie s 15th participant of The First Tee to play at Pebble. Donnie named his son Andrew Andrew Santiago Caldwell after Santiago Cavanaugh, the golf coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fl. Santiago also taught all three of Donnie s kids how to speak Spanish. The PURE Insurance Championship is the only event of its kind in which 81 junior golfers are teamed with 81 PGA TOUR Champions players and 162 amateurs during an official PGA TOUR Champions tournament. The juniors, ages 14 to 18, compete for the pro-junior title. Representing 22 states, the juniors were selected by a national panel of judges based on playing ability and application of the Nine Core Values and life skills learned through The First Tee s programs. In this 15th tournament year, more than 870 kids from The First Tee have played in the tournament, meeting and learning from PGA TOUR Champions players and amateurs in the field while showcasing the Nine Core Values and the leadership and life skills they have acquired at The First Tee chapters. Since its inception in 1997, The First Tee has introduced the sport of golf and The First Tee s Nine Core Values to more than 15 million kids, positively impacting their lives along the way. The First Tee s Nine Core Values are: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. The PURE Insurance Championship is one of 10 national opportunities provided by The First Tee headquarters to encourage and motivate kids as they progress through the program and toward high school graduation. Clint Eastwood is chairman of the event. Play was conducted on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills Golf Course on Friday and Saturday, with the final round contested solely at Pebble Beach on Sunday September 30.

5 UK Athletics Photo LEXINGTON, Ky. The University of Kentucky women s basketball team officially started its 45th season of varsity women s basketball on Tuesday holding a spirited practice inside the Joe Craft Center. The Wildcats, who have been holding individual conditioning and fundamental workouts the last month, will practice several more times this week and next week in preparation for one of the year s most anticipated events: Big Blue Madness It was a good practice and a hard practice, senior guard Maci Morris said. Everyone pushed through the best we could and we got to see where we are as a team and what we need to work on and how we get better. I think we need to continue to improve our conditioning. The way that we are wanting to play this year we have to be in the best shape we can. We also need to keep a high level of tenacity and consistency in our defense. 8 New hunting access areas open in six East Kentucky counties Agreements open thousands of acres for public hunting FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 25, 2018) Working with private landowners is one way the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources expands public hunting opportunities across the state. Recently, the department reached Hunting Access Area agreements with RH Group and Elk Horn Coal Company, opening more than 35,000 acres in Floyd, Magoffin, Pike, Mc- Creary, Letcher and Knott counties for public hunting this fall. We are excited to be able to add more acreage to our Hunting Access Area program, said Steve Beam, Wildlife Division director for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. It is a high priority for the agency to work with landowners in southeast Kentucky to provide access to high quality elk hunting land. An added bonus is these areas provide all kinds of other great hunting opportunities as well. Our efforts have paid off as we are now approaching a quarter-million acres open for hunting under Hunting Access and WMA agreements with private landowners. We also have another nearly 100,000 acres open for elk hunting under our voucher program. Our hunters are really utilizing these areas for some high quality hunting experiences. Elk hunting on the new areas is regulated through the Voucher Cooperator Elk Permit Program. For all other species, the areas are open under statewide regulations. The tracts comprising RH Group Hunting Access Area cover 15,014 acres in Floyd, Letcher, Magoffin, McCreary and Pike counties. For elk hunters, RH Group Hunting Access Area falls within the boundaries of the Tug Fork Limited Entry Area (LEA), a portion of the Levisa Fork LEA and the At-Large Area. No bear hunting is allowed on the McCreary County tract of this hunting access area. Elk Horn Coal Hunting Access Area encompasses 20,138 acres in Floyd, Knott, Letcher and Pike counties. Both areas are comprised of reclaimed strip mine habitat of grasses and shrubs with timbered ridges and drainages throughout. The habitat should appeal to deer, bear and turkey hunters. Not to be overlooked is the small game opportunity. Reclaimed strip mines are excellent for rabbits and we often see decent numbers of quail on them, too, said Joe McDermott, deer and elk program biologist with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. I think it would be a good spot to hunt turkeys as well as deer, bear and elk. Scouting is obviously going to be key. A lot of times that terrain lends itself to being able to spot and stalk animals. Hunters on either area should exercise caution if active mining practices are underway and give large trucks the right of way. Additional information, including detailed maps and area usage guidelines, for RH Group Hunting Access Area, Elk Horn Coal Hunting Access Area and all other Hunting Access Areas is available on Kentucky Fish and Wildlife s website at fw.ky.gov. Click the Maps tab on the department s homepage then click on the Wildlife Management Areas/Public Hunting Areas link.

11 LMU men are ranked 4th in a preseason poll by Street & Smith CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The first preseason poll leading up to the season has been released and the Lincoln Memorial University men's basketball team finds itself in a familiar position, as the Railsplitters are tabbed at No. 4 in the Street & Smith's preseason rankings. In addition to that, redshirtjunior guard Cornelius Taylor has been selected as a preseason All-American. Lincoln Memorial is coming off of yet another masterful season. In , the Railsplitters posted their fourth straight 30-win campaign while going 32-2 overall, which included an unblemished 20-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. LMU won its sixth straight SAC regular-season title and fourth SAC tournament crown while hosting the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional for the third time in four seasons. The Railsplitters, who ended the season ranked No. 1 in the NABC/Division II national poll for the third time in four years, made their third straight trip to the Southeast Region title game and narrowly missed earning their third consecutive Elite Eight berth. LMU has put up at least 25 wins in each of the last eight seasons, but enters the campaign in unfamiliar territory from a roster standpoint. The Railsplitters graduated four starters off last season's team and lost six of their top eight scorers overall, including Bevo Francis Award recipient and current Denver Nuggets forward Emanuel Terry, leading scorer Trevon Shaw and All- American, do-everything forward Dorian Pinson. In fact, of the team's 21 players heading into the upcoming season, only seven have ever made an appearance for the Railsplitters. Taylor is the lone starter returning for Lincoln Memorial this season, and the point guard was named to Street & Smith's preseason All-American squad after averaging 14.5 points, 3.9 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three-point range last season. A native of Claxton, Ga., Taylor was one of the Railsplitters' four All-SAC selections in , earning second-team distinctions. Taylor hit double figures in 26 of his 33 appearances last season, headlined by a careerhigh 31-point effort against Anderson. He surpassed the 20-point threshold five other times, scoring 24 against No. 2 Queens in the regular-season finale. He posted a careerhigh eight assists against Carson-Newman and had at least five assists in 13 games. He enters his junior season with 861 career points. Other than Taylor, redshirt-junior Kamaran Calhoun is the Railsplitters' most experienced returning player with 47 career appearances and only one start. He averaged 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game last season. West Liberty is ranked No. 1 in the Street & Smith's preseason poll, while the rest of the top five consisted of No. 2 Bellarmine, No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) and No. 5 West Texas A&M. The Railsplitters open the season with an exhibition contest at Auburn on November 2. Lincoln Memorial plays the first official game against Clayton State on November 9 in Aiken, S.C. Jim sat out to harvest a doe on opening day. It s always good to get the first deer under the belt, and it would provide some delicious meat for the family. Normally, the sight of a doe under his tree-stand wouldn t provide any extra adrenaline; after all, he s usually after a buck. But the mind works differently when that doe becomes the game one is pursuing. He settled in that morning about twenty minutes before shooting light. He is anxious after nearly nine months of being out of a tree stand. The temperature is cool, but it will warm up quickly. As soon as the sun began to rise Jim saw in the distant a few does in the field above the woods where he was waiting. He wondered if they might make their way down the trail that lingered below his stand. He already felt like his scouting had paid off simply because he was looking at what he had come after. His daydreaming came to a sudden halt when he glanced slightly ahead and to the right. There she was. It was big lone doe that was winding down the path toward him. Now, she was only forty yards away. Immediately Jim s heart went into another gear. He knew it would happen, so he calmed himself by taking a deep breath and concentrating on the task at hand. Since he was sitting he would need to stand up, turn slightly to his right, and turn his bow upright, all without being seen. As she went behind a tree, he made each move in one slow but sweeping motion. He kept telling himself to be patient. He snapped his release on the loop of his bow and began to view each shooting lane that could be used. As the deer came closer, Jim stood perfectly still. His leafy suit gave him Outdoor Truths with Gary Miller satisfaction that even if she looked his way she would not be able to make out the odd shape of leaves. He picked out another tree and decided that when the doe moved behind it he would draw his bow. When her vitals cleared the tree, he would fire. She moved as if she knew the scenario going through Jim s mind that is until she came to that tree. Instead she decided to stop and turn around. She was only twenty yards away. Jim panicked slightly but watched to see where the next shooting lane would be. He pinpointed it as she moved back in the direction she came from. The shot would now be quartering away. She moved into the opening and Jim released his arrow. It looked like a good hit. As she sprinted away, he watched her every move and marked the last spot he saw her, by a downed tree. As Jim realized what had just happened, a smile crossed his face. His lower back began to throb, his body began to shake, and his legs went weak. He quickly set down, afraid his trembling body was going to cause him to fall from his stand. He took a deep breath and set the timer on his watch to remind himself not to push the fatally wounded doe too soon. His knees continue to knock together. He takes his water bottle from his fanny pack and relives what had just happened. Jim is sixty-five years old. And you wonder why we go hunting Gary Miller Gary@outdoortruths.org
