PROVIDENCE CONTINUES TO ROLL: The Providence Bruins went 3-2 since the last report, ranking second in the Atlantic Division 13 games into the AHL season, with a record behind the Manchester Monarchs who are currently Craig Cunningham and Matt Fraser combined for seven goals against the Hartford Wolf Pack on November 8, with Cunningham scoring four and Fraser tallying three. Ryan Spooner also chipped in four assists in the high-scoring 8-5 win over the Wolf Pack. On November 10, Malcolm Subban engaged in his fi rst AHL fi ght against Wolf Pack netminder Scott Stajcer, before both goalies were ejected. Niklas Svedberg fi nished up the game between the pipes for Proviendece, combining with Subban for a 17-save shutout in the 6-0 win. The P-Bruins will begin a three-game home stretch from November 15 to 22 before they head to Manchester to take on the Monarchs on November 23. They will fi nish up the ir second set of upcoming weekend matchups against Springfi eld on November 24 back in Providence at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Sexton is off to a strong start to the season, tallying 11 points (2-9=11) through 12 games, after earning the Ironman Award in CHANGES BRING OPPORTUNITIES: Moves in the offseason brought an infl ux of new talent to the Bruins organization. Providence forward Matt Fraser has played in six games since the last report and has recorded eight goals and one assist during that time. Fraser currently leads the squad with 11 goals (tied for second in the AHL) and ranks second on the team in points with Ryan Spooner tallied two points in two games with the Boston Bruins after being recalled on October 31. Spooner continued his hot play after being assigned back to Providence on November 4 and leads the team in points with 14 (2-12=14)... P-Bruins centerman Alexander Khokhlachev has played in six games since the last report, notching four goals and two assists during that time. The forward now has 4-6=10 totals this season... Blueliner Rob O Gara earned his fi rst career collegiate goal for Yale University on November 1 against St. Lawrence University, and currently has a goal and two assists through six games this season. 4 BRUINS PROSPECT ROUNDUP with New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke Several off-season newcomers to the Boston Bruins organization have made an important AHL impact felt early in the hockey season. Two of the four players acquired from the Dallas Stars on July 4, left winger Matt Fraser and defenseman Joe Morrow, have gotten off to fast offensive starts in Providence s fi rst 13 games of the season. Fraser, whose 70 goals entering the season was a Texas Stars franchise record, has picked up where he left off, fi ring home 11 goals and 13 points for Providence in as many contests. The Red Deer, Alberta native was an undrafted free agent by Dallas and has rapidly developed into a consistent and dangerous goal scorer at the AHL level. With 13 NHL games under his belt, the 23-year-old has a chance to see some big league action with the Bruins at some point, but with a loaded top-nine Fraser may have to keep plugging away in the Ocean State for now. Morrow, a former fi rst-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins (23rd overall) in 2011, is an offensively gifted rearguard who is leading Providence in scoring from the blue line with 10 points in 13 games. The 6-foot-1, 206-pound Morrow is a fl uid skater who is crisp on his edges and can handle the puck well at top speed. Morrow is making an impact on Providence s league-leading power play with his big shot, effective puck distribution (four assists) and lateral mobility, while working to improve his overall defense. After struggling to adapt to the speed, pace and demands of pro hockey, the former WHL star with the Portland Winterhawks has embraced his major role in Providence under head coach Bruce Cassidy and his development is back on track. Veteran forward Nick Johnson was signed in July to provide scoring depth and experience to the Bruins organization. After an excellent preseason in Boston, the Dartmouth standout and former Penguins draft pick was assigned to Providence and began the season on fi re. The 27-year-old Calgary native is an opportunistic, two-way forward who can score in a variety of ways and brings more than 100 NHL games of experience to the mix. Although the numbers have tailed off from the blistering early season pace, Johnson continues to be a valuable contributor on the farm with the potential to help Boston in a pinch. Although defenseman Mike Moore has just one point on the season, the free agent signing and Princeton University graduate has brought a consistent and stabilizing presence to the Providence blue line. A former Sharks and Predators farmhand, Moore is a nofrills shutdown player who plays a hard-nosed game without taking undisciplined penalties and can log effective minutes. Moore may not attract a lot of attention with his steady performance, but he s the kind of solid veteran who has helped Providence to a record, good for second in the Atlantic Division. PICTURED: NICK JOHNSON BRUINS PROSPECT SNAPSHOT: Matt Fraser, LW Providence (AHL) Scouting report: At 6-foot-2, 204 pounds, Fraser is a fl edgling power forward who is one of the AHL s most lethal fi nishers. His skating is a work in progress in terms of the acceleration and topend speed, but he gets where needed effectively enough. Sublime release: the puck explodes off his stick in an instant, and he pounces on rebounds and secondary scoring chances around the net like a predator on unsuspecting prey. In just his third AHL season, Fraser is off to the best offensive start of his young career and poses matchup problems for opposing defenses for his size and ability to slip through seams in the offensive zone. He will initiate contact and stick up for teammates. Although Fraser can go long stretches where he doesn t stand out in a game, he can suddenly strike quickly with multiple tallies and is productive on the power play. Outlook: With his (albeit limited) NHL experience and impressive AHL goal scoring totals, Fraser is putting himself in position to earn an opportunity in Boston. His biggest challenge to translating his excellent AHL production to the highest level is in more effectively handling his play when the game closes up on him so much faster in the NHL. Fraser has top-six forward potential, but cracking the B s lineup will depend on him taking rapid advantage of any chance or call-up he gets. 5 AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT with BostonBruins.com s Caryn Switaj In the spring of 2013, following his junior season with Clarkson University, center Ben Sexton was presented with the Ironman Award. The award represents the player who most demonstrates the will and determination to overcome injuries and contribute to the team. Now a captain in his senior season, the 6-0, 203-pound forward battled through nagging injuries to play in 28 of his team s 36 games as a junior, and still fi nish the season tied for second in scoring with 20 points, recording fi ve goals and 15 assists. He also racked up 70 penalty minutes. Drafted in seventh round (206th overall) by the Bruins in 2009, the centerman has had to push through injuries throughout his collegiate career. Despite the adversity, he s remained close to being a point-per-game player in all of his four seasons. Progressing since his freshman season, the forward put up 29 points (8-21) in 27 games as a sophomore, 20 points in 28 games as a junior, and already in , has put up two goals and nine assists for 11 points through his fi rst 12 games, along with 37 penalty minutes. Only two of Sexton s 11 points so far have come from goals, but one of them was as a game-winner on the power play in a 3-2 win over conference rival Dartmouth on November 8. He has the ability to fi nish, but also set up plays. He started out with three assists in Clarkson s fi rst four games. He has fought the injury bug a bit during his time at Clarkson, but he did a tremendous amount of work this summer and it certainly seems to be paying dividends early in the season as both he and his team are off to a strong start, said Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney, who has seen Sexton s development in the B s system since he was drafted in Led by Sexton, the Golden Knights are out to a start and are tied for second place in the ECAC Hockey standings. They rank 11th overall in the country. The B s prospect is serving as team captain for the second season. He wore the A as assistant captain during his sophomore campaign. Ben has always shown strong leadership skills as a highly competitive player, said Sweeney. He s both a lead by example and vocal leader. Anytime that I can help out some of the younger guys, I m obviously more than willing to do it, Sexton has told BostonBruins.com. I think the biggest thing for the freshmen as an older guy is just getting them comfortable at fi rst, and then letting them know that they can play The step is a little bit of an adjustment at fi rst, but great advice that I got going into my freshman year was just have the confi dence that you know you can play. Sexton has helped instill that mentality both in his teammates, and in himself. PICTURED: BEN SEXTON In addition to earning the Ironman Award last season at the end of , the captain was also honored with the Mike Morrison Dedication Award for teamwork, hustle and dedication. Given his work ethic, leadership and ironman toughness, it s not too surprising to hear which current Bruin his style could be compared to. Ben is a hard-nosed two way player like Gregory Campbell, said Sweeney. Good on faceoffs and the PK, but also has the ability to play up and down your lineup. While all Bruins are tough and show tireless hard work, Campbell somehow fi nds a way to still set himself apart. He s always one of the fi rst on the ice, or last off, staying to work on faceoffs, details of the game, skating, shooting, anything and everything. The B s centerman has missed just six of a possible 229 regular season games since joining Boston at the start of the season. He s currently still working to get to 100 precent after coming back from a broken leg that caused him to miss the end of the run to the Stanley Cup Final. With Sexton s strong start to , he s on track to help his Knights be a top team in the ECAC and amongst college hockey this season. Teamwork. Hustle. Dedication. Will. Determination. When those are the words your team decides to bestow upon you, it certainly speaks volumes beyond just the Clarkson locker room. Adversity happens, and the way Sexton has responded time after time, has proven his ironman status. Injuries are something that you can t really prevent, so I just had that mentality, and I knew that when I came back, I was going to be the player that I wanted to be, Sexton told BostonBruins.com, after he had overcome his injuries. --Caryn Switaj, BostonBruins.com

6 New Faces, New Opportunities Brandon McNelis, BostonBruins.com The summer of 2013 brought changes to the Bruins organization, which saw in infl ux of talent into the B s pipeline of prospects with the acquisitions of Matt Fraser and Joe Morrow from the Dallas Stars as well as the free agent signings of Nick Johnson and Mike Moore. A change of scenery means a fresh start and an opportunity to make important and lasting fi rst impressions with both upper management and coaches. Defenseman Joe Morrow is no stranger to learning a new system after being traded twice in under a year after fi rst being dealt from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Dallas Stars on March 24. Less than four months later, on July 4, Morrow was moved yet again as one of the pieces in a seven-player blockbuster trade with the Dallas Stars. But despite experiencing two sudden shifts in his young hockey career, Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney has seen a solid work ethic out of Morrow and the ability overcome adversity. When Joe fi rst arrived in Boston, his confi dence was a bit shaken having been traded twice in a short period of time and he also had to deal with a nagging injury, Said Sweeney. He worked very hard during the summer, in conjunction with our training staff to rehab and condition his body accordingly He arrived at training camp wide-eyed to learn yet another new system and it certainly took some time for him to make the necessary adjustments. Sweeney continued, His recent play at both ends of the rink speaks to how well he has now adapted, and the job our coaches in Providence have done to provide Joe with the support he needs to continue to develop as an NHL top four D-man. Now 13 games into the AHL season with the Providence Bruins, Morrow has shown that he is starting to settle quite nicely, having notched two goals and eight assists for 10 points. Joe has a laid back personality but he loves to play the game and his consistency, physicality and decision making continue to improve with every game. Matt Fraser, who came over with Morrow in the Dallas trade, has shown the ability to adapt to a new system as well since joining the Bruins organization, including the ability to fi nd the back of the net. Fraser leads the Providence squad with 11 goals (tied for second in the AHL) this season and is ranked second on the team in points with 13 (11-2=13). Matt is scoring at an impressive pace, while continuing to adapt to a new system and a style of play that incorporates a more hard-nosed, aggressive style, explained Sweeney. His shot is very dangerous and he has proven he can score goals from all areas of the ice and in all situations. PICTURED: MATT FRASER Despite being assigned to Providence following training camp, Johnson maintained a positive attitude and has carried his success to the AHL, which hasn t gone unnoticed by Sweeney and the B s upper management. Nick Johnson had a very strong training camp and almost made the big club. A lot of players may have pouted with that disappointing news but Nick s arrived in Providence ready to lead a young team and compliment our group, said Sweeney. Nick s versatility as player who can provide offensively, whether fi ve-onfi ve or on the power play, and also be a vital part of our PK unit has been important to our coaches. He has played on both wings and helped to mentor some young centermen as to the commitment it takes in both ends of the rink, game in and game out, to be successful at the NHL level. And with a young squad players in Providence, leadership among the group becomes increasingly important. Mike Moore (signed as a free agent on July 5), along with Johnson, has shown the capability to be that leader and was named Providence s Captain for the season. It did not take long for everyone to appreciate Mike Moore s leadership, said Sweeney of Moore. He was named captain and his unselfi sh play is a big part of his character. He leads by example and plays the game with big heart and passion. He also took some time to adjust his game to the Bruins style but the past couple of weekends, his consistency and level of play directly coincides with the team s success. --Brandon McNelis, BostonBruins.com Nick Johnson, who was signed as a free agent on July 5, a day after the trade with Dallas, was among the standout players during Boston Bruins training camp in September. Johnson fi nished tied for fi rst with Jarome Iginla in goal-scoring during the exhibition matchups with three tallies.
