PROVIDENCE STARTS STRONG: The Providence Bruins are off to a solid start to begin the AHL season, collecting points in three of their fi rst four games to yield a record, putting themselves in second place in the Atlantic Division behind the Manchester Monarchs. Ryan Spooner has led the way for the P-Bruins, registering fi ve points (two goals, three assists) in four games played, while Nick Johnson has paced the goal scoring with three (leads Providence). Alexander Khokhlachev has shown the ability to fi nd his teammates in the right spots, notching three assists in his fi rst four appearances this season. The P-Bruins will continue on in their journey for the Calder Cup as they take on the Springfi eld Falcons at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Friday, October 18, and then an away matchup against the Monarchs in Manchester on Saturday, October 19. PICTURED: MATT LINDBLAD PICTURED: NIKLAS SVEDBERG B S PROSPECTS HEATING UP: P-Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg is picking up where he left off last season after being awarded the Aldedge Baz Bastien Award as the AHL s best goaltender. Svedberg has recorded a record with a 2.25 goals against average and a.936 save percentage draft pick Anton Blidh is off to a red hot start for Frolunda in the J20 Super- Elit league in Sweden, notching eight goals and four assists for 14 points in 14 games played... Fellow 2013 draft pick Peter Cehlarik is having a strong showing thus far for Asploven in the Allsvenskan league in Sweden, recording four goals and six assists in 11 games played...defensman Matt Benning had a strong debut for the Northeastern Huskies, scoring one goal and two assists in two appearances for the Black & Red... Goaltender Zane Gothberg is off to a promising start with University of North Dakota, allowing just two goals in two games, good for a 1.21 goals against average... Prospect Ben Sexton started his season with Clarkson University on the right foot, recording one goal and three assists through four games.

3 BRUINS PROSPECT ROUNDUP with New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke The hockey season is in full swing, with Boston Bruins prospects competing in various professional and amateur leagues across the globe. The bulk of the team s top futures are skating in Providence of the AHL, and the club has opened the new season with a record, getting good production from OHL graduates Ryan Spooner, Alexander Khokhlachev and Jared Knight. The defense is shaping up well thanks to Zach Trotman s strong two-way play, while Niklas Svedberg has provided the club with top-shelf goaltending, as he did last season when he earned top AHL goalie honors. Spooner posted a two-goal, three-point effort in a win over Portland, a performance punctuated by a second period breakaway strike that showcased the 21-year-old s impressive combination of speed and slick hands. The center and 45th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft has come a long way in his development since the Bruins selected him. After successful offseason training in his hometown of Ottawa, Spooner showed up to Boston training camp a little heavier and stronger, and that has showed in his play, as he is more involved physically and in battles for loose pucks along the boards and in front of the net. Spooner s strength is his offensive ability, but his overall game has substantially improved in the past three years, and with two goals and fi ve points in four AHL games, he s off to a fi ne start and making a case to see time with Boston if the team needs him. Khokhlachev had a good rookie camp and tournament in Coral Springs, Fla., and has three assists for Providence after making his AHL debut late last season. As one of Boston s most talented and skilled forward prospects, Koko is working to be a more effective performer in all three zones. He has superior vision and puck skills; he is able to thread the needle with pinpoint passes, with a quick, accurate shot. He has yet to fi nd the back of the net this season, but it won t be long. With two goals in four games, Knight is enjoying good health and opportunistic play. His second goal of the season came against Manchester on a quick one-timer from a perfect Alex Fallstrom feed out in the slot. With his blurry-fast release and nose for the net, Knight is at his best when driving hard between the hash marks and scoring gritty goals. Providence coach Bruce Cassidy has been moving the 2010 second-rounder up and down the team s lines in the fi rst four games, so Knight will look to settle into a regular role soon. Seth Griffith, who sat out the fi rst three games of the year, scored in his AHL debut against Portland. It s a testament to how deep Providence s group of forwards is when a player who tallied 101 career goals in the OHL, all with the London Knights, is a healthy scratch. If he can continue to make the most of his opportunities, Griffi th will earn more of a role on this contending squad. On defense, Trotman continues to make a compelling case for NHL duty. After a standout tournament against Tampa Bay, Florida and Nashville rookies, the Indiana native showed up to main camp in Boston ready to work. He was rewarded with opportunities to showcase his impressive package of size, mobility and smarts during exhibition play before being returned to the AHL. With the B s loaded at the defense position, Trotman PICTURED: RYAN SPOONER is best served by playing top minutes in Providence in all situations. He has two assists so far, and with his cannon shot, expect him to contribute goals to the mix at both even strength and on the power play. He s big, strong, and has underrated vision and puck-moving skills. He may need another full season in the AHL, but the last pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft is knocking on the door for a big league job. Picking up where he left off after becoming the fi rst Providence goalie in team history to win the Aldedge Baz Bastien Award, Svedberg has gone 2-0-1, posting a 2.25 goals against average and outstanding.936 save percentage. With fi ne size and refl exes, Svedberg is fundamentally sound and effi cient in his crease movements. However, what makes him so valuable for his team is an ability to make key saves at the right moments. Although Providence has surrendered late leads this season, Svedberg has done his part to keep his team in it each and every night, with three quality starts under his belt. That kind of consistency is what will earn Svedberg an NHL opportunity sooner rather later. He is making an early season case as the team s MVP and most consistent player. 4 AMATEUR PROSPECT PREVIEW with BostonBruins.com s Caryn Switaj As every new season begins for the Black & Gold, there are also a slew of young prospects trying to work their way through the system with the hopes of one day suiting up in the spoked-b. Before turning pro and reaching the NHL level with Boston or the American Hockey League with the Providence Bruins, the journey begins at varying levels, whether in college, junior hockey or overseas in the European leagues. The B s summer development camp certainly helps gauge a prospect, and early Fall s rookie camp provides more evaluation, but as they head into their respective seasons, the Bruins hockey operations and scouting staff will be keeping close tabs on the upand-comers. Our advice to all of our prospects is that we want to see progress and development in their on-ice game and with their off-ice strength programs, said Bruins Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney. They need to develop a balance between their studies, nutritional habits and of course, their own play on the ice for their respective coaches. Development camp is a resource and a baseline for all of the players and we let each of them know that the Bruins organization is here to support them in their pursuit to be a professional player. These are young men and nowhere near fully-developed professional players, and we recognize that each player s development trajectory is different. At the collegiate level, defenseman Matt Benning is in his freshman season with Northeastern University after earning the Clark Cup Championship in the United States Hockey League with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in The B s sixth round draft pick from 2012 had a memorable start to his college debut, notching a goal and two assists in his fi rst two games as a Husky. Power forward Brian Ferlin is entering his junior year at Cornell, where he has recorded 18 goals and 27 assists in 60 games and earned ECAC Rookie honors. A physical, hardnosed player, the 6-foot-2, 209-pound Ferlin admires (not surprisingly) the toughness and hard play of Milan Lucic. Drafted 121st overall in the fourth round in 2011, the winger will be looking to keep building his strength, especially amidst the NCAA season, with about half as many games as the players in juniors. Most recent draft pick, 2013 fourth rounder Ryan Fitzgerald, started his college career with a bang, notching his fi rst NCAA goal for Boston College in a 7-2 season opening win over RPI. While his family connections run deep in hockey - his uncle Scott is on the B s scouting staff and his father Tom retired as a Bruin and serves as an Assistant GM for Pittsburgh - the North Reading, MA native is looking to blaze his own path. A drive down Comm. Ave., Fitzgerald s good friend, Charlestown native Matt Grzelcyk, is entering his sophomore season as a defenseman with Boston University. What the 5-foot-9, 174-pound blueliner lacks in size, he picks up in hockey IQ, so it s no surprise that he watched Torey Krug closely during the the B s postseason stretch. Look for his offensive confi dence to have a spike for the Terriers this season. Rugged winger Colton Hargrove is in his sophomore season with Western Michigan, coming off a freshman year that saw him have a rocky start after making the jump from juniors with the Fargo Force in the United States Hockey League. With a demanding coach in Andy Murray, Hargrove will keep honing the details, including physicality and speed that make up the power forward game, as he builds on his 10-point rookie season fi fth-round draft pick Rob O Gara is starting to come into his own as he enters his sophomore season with Yale. The 6-foot-4, a 208-pound blueliner progressed from a wide-eyed Bambi-like prospect at his fi rst Development Camp in the summer of 2011, to a quiet yet confi dent leader who helped lead the Bulldogs to its fi rst-ever national championship. As any young D-man, O Gara s focus is on becoming stronger, quicker and more explosive. Center Ben Sexton is in his senior season with Clarkson University and his second as team captain. He wore the A his sophomore year. The pound forward started his swan song NCAA season with a goal and three assists in four games. The B s chose Sexton as their fi nal pick in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. Wiley Sherman earned the Bambi status at Development Camp in July, taking over for O Gara, after being drafted by the B s 150th overall in the fi fth round of the 2013 draft. Still with one year of prep hockey left at Hotchkiss School in Connecticut before joining Harvard in , the 6-foot-6, 196-pound defenseman has plenty of learning - PICTURED: RYAN FITAGERALD and growing - still on the way, as he looks to build out his frame and grow stronger prior to the NCAA game. Goaltender Zane Gothberg is in his sophomore season with North Dakota after two years of junior hockey with the Fargo Force in the USHL. In UND s opener, Gothberg was called upon after his team was in a 3-1 defi cit. He stopped all 17 shots he faced in the 34 minutes he played, leading North Dakota to a 5-3 win. A veteran Development Camp attendee, Gothberg is the prototypical teammate, especially with his off-ice personality. Considering his opening weekend, we ll watch for him to push for the starting role. Switching to juniors, the B s only have one prospect, Mitchell Dempsey, in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, with players like Anthony Camara, Malcolm Subban and Seth Griffith all making the jump to the P-Bruins this year. A seventh-round draft pick in 2013, Dempsey had an injury-marred season in with a high ankle sprain and pneumonia, putting up fi ve points (1-4) in 36 games but the Bruins see him as a strong winger who is poised for a bounce-back season. Overseas, the B s will be keeping tabs on 2013 draft picks two-way defenseman Linus Arensson, aggressive forward Anton Blidh and two-way forward Peter Cehlarik s soft hands in the Swedish leagues. Arnesson is in his third season with Djurgardens IF Stockholm, and working on developing his offensive game to continue his solid two-way nature. Meanwhile, Blidh (Frolunda HC) is a strong skater who looks to have the projection for a gritty Bruins style bottom six role. Cehlarik had a standout development camp for the Bruins in July, showing the player that worked his way up to the Swedish Elite League (now Swedish Hockey League) with Lulea. A little bit of hands and a little bit of Handzus, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli labeled him at the draft. He can dish, good vision, good size. Two-way player. Our philosophy as far as tracking and monitoring each players progress is multi-dimensional, said Sweeney, to the approach throughout the season. Our entire staff has the latitude to reach out to any player whenever they see them play in person and we all communicate regularly as to what we saw in their play and/or reports and conversations from their coaches. Sweeney and staff take a pro-active approach, but also understand the need to give a player and their team the necessary space. The approach includes texting when they are in town to see a prospect play, and when in-person isn t available, they watch games and sometimes cut clips to show them areas to focus on, with support from their respective coaches. Phone calls to the players are also always in the mix on a regular basis, as well as talks with their coaches. Developing players remains the lifeline to providing depth and sustaining a year over year competitive balance within your organization, said Sweeney.
