October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2011 The Omaha Hockey Club membership helped to raise almost $900 last year to help find a CURE for Breast Cancer. This year we will once again be selling t-shirts. We should have them the second week of October. Watch at the rink for the display with the new shirts. Letter from the President Neal Krauss It s Hockey Time in Omaha!!!!! Welcome to year #2 of the Omaha Hockey Club. As President I really enjoy this time of year. The freshness of a new season is always exciting for the players and coaches alike. The amount of work that everyone does during the offseason to prepare for this time of year is time well spent when you can come into the rink and see the smile on a players face as they walk into the rink for the first time, filled with the anticipation of connecting with old friends and meeting new teammates. It s not about the wins and the losses; those are often forgotten later in the day. What is great about this game are the friendships you develop while playing for a team and working together to meet those team goals, whatever they may be. Good luck to all of our players. 2 Letter from the President continued Neal Krauss We Need Volunteers Want to help grow Omaha Hockey? We are looking for a new Growth and Retention Coordinator to work with the board this year. If you are interested a description of the position is listed on the front page of the website. We can never have enough volunteers and can use your help in all areas of the program. During games, each team is going to need 2 volunteers to run the clock, score sheet or open the penalty boxes. Without these people the game can t happen. If everyone would be willing to take a turn, everyone would only have to do it 2 or 3 times during the year. If you are willing and you can only give an hour a week, let us know, we will find something for you to help with. This organization is run on volunteer time. Please dedicate some of your time to help us make this a great year for the kids. Have a great year and I look forward to hearing about our teams successes. Thank you for being a part of OHC. Update from the Travel Director Rick Murcek Tryouts are over, travel teams are picked, the rosters are set, and the budgets are finalized. It s time to play hockey! I wish all the teams the very best this season. Remember, hockey is a game that kids play because it s fun. Let s not forget that as we move through this season. I promise that referees will make mistakes, coaches will make mistakes, and our players will make mistakes (probably lots of them). Its part of the game and it s not worth losing sleep over. We will even have parent s that make mistakes this year (yes, it s true). We all learn from them, become better, and move on. We have a great group of travel coaches this year. None of them are the same and they are not going to do things exactly the same way as each other. That s OK. They should not be so focused on wins and loses. Neither should the parents. I always say that a winning record has more to do with the games we schedule than it does the way we coach or develop our players. I could put a schedule together for our very best teams that would allow them to go or I could put a schedule for that same team to go Our wins and loses have very little to do with how we are developing players. Player development is our main focus. Some coaches around the country have placed such a big emphasis on winning or their winning records that they have shifted their focus to systems and tactics. Our coaches WILL be focused on development. We don t want to have PeeWee players that can t skate backwards, Bantam players that can t stop in both directions and Midget/High School players that can t use their backhand effectively. USAH s ADM and LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) models are not just about Mite hockey and they are not about developing the very best Squirt players. It is a long term, cumulative skill development model that takes Continued pg 3 OHC 2

3 Update from the High School Director Lisa Leary Welcome back High School players and parents!!! If you have not yet registered, there are still a few open spots available. A few things to remember: Practice will begin on October 3 rd. Jerseys and socks will be distributed in Mid-October. Lisa Leary High School Director Update from the Travel Director continued Rick Murcek full advantage of certain windows of peak development of a kid s life. It has everything to do with putting out the very best athletes and hockey players we can, when the time comes for them to leave Omaha Hockey Club. That is the goal of our Travel Program. Hockey is the greatest game on earth. Let s never forget that kids play hockey because it s fun. When it s not fun anymore, they quit. More times than not, it is an adult that takes the fun out of the game. Rick Murcek Travel Director NEEDED Growth and Retention Coordinator The Omaha Hockey Club is looking for a volunteer to serve as the Growth and Retention Coordinator for the Organization. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Developing programs to bring new players into the organization. Develop a retention plan to keep players in the organization. Planning of events for the organization o Play Hockey for Free o Back to Hockey Day Assisting with the U8 programs in the organization If you are interested or have questions, please contact Neal Krauss at krausshockey@cox.net. 4 Coaching Clinics There are currently three (3) USAH CEP Coaching Clinics scheduled in the Omaha/Lincoln area. Registration is open for each of the clinics at All clinics will include an on-ice session and coaches will need to bring skates, gloves, helmet and sticks. If you have any questions, please contact Rick or rick.murcek@yahoo.com. Capacity is limited so please sign up early. There may be another Level 1 or Level 2 clinic scheduled this season, but I cannot guarantee it. I am working to find a date that works in Omaha and/or Fremont. There will NOT be another Level 3 scheduled. Please be aware that in addition to the CEP Certification, every coach and assistance coach is responsible for taking the age specific online module for the age division they are coaching. These modules are 5 hours in length and cost $10. Modules must be completed by Dec 31 of the current playing season. Once you register for a module, you have 30 days in which to complete the module. All modules started after Dec 1 still must be completed by Dec 31. The Mite, Squirt, PeeWee and Bantam modules are now open and available. The HS/Midget module will open on Oct. 3 rd. You will need your USA Hockey membership confirmation number and a credit card in order to register for the modules.
