HOCKEY EAST VS. NCHC Since the NCHC began play in October 2013, Hockey East has a record against the eight member schools. Boston University is in nine games against the NCHC. THREE-POINT WEEKEND The Terriers kicked off Hockey East play last weekend by taking three of four points in a home-and-home series with UConn. Junior Bobo Carpenter scored a pair of shorthanded goals in a 2-2 tie at Agganis Arena in the opener before notching his first collegiate hat trick with three power-play goals in a 6-3 road win the following night. All four goals in the first game came during UConn power plays as the Huskies converted twice on the man advantage. Carpenter became the first Terrier to score two shorthanded goals in game since HEAD TO HEAD Cason Hohmann performed the feat against Merrimack in the Hockey East quarterfinals on March 14, In Hartford, the Terriers scored twice in the opening 89 seconds to take a lead they would not relinquish. BU went 3-of-4 on the power play and added a trio of even-strength goals after only recording three 5-on-5 tallies in its first five games combined. Sophomore Patrick Curry recorded his first two goals of the season and senior captain Brandon Hickey also scored. BOBO BREAKS OUT After scoring five goals - all on special teams - in a home-and-home series UConn, junior forward Bobo Carpenter was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday. Carpenter entered the weekend looking for his first goal of the season and he ended up scoring five of the Terriers eight goals on just nine shots over the course of the two contests. All three tallies in Saturday s 6-3 road victory were on the power play and he added an assist to set a new career high in points with four. He now leads the team in goals and is tied with sophomore Patrick Harper for the lead in points with eight. This is the first Hockey East weekly honor for Carpenter. 3 TERRIER TIDBITS BU is the only team in the nation that has scored multiple shorthanded goals this season and junior Bobo Carpenter has both of them. Sophomore Dante Fabbro has a team-high 18 blocked shots this season and led last year s squad with 79. Only a third of BU s 18 goals this season have come in 5-on-5 situations. Patrick Harper has scored two goals in both of his season openers as a Terrier. Freshman Shane Bowers was named to CHN s Preseason All-America Second Team. Outside of the Beanpot Mondays, all of BU s games the rest of the regular season are on Fridays and Saturdays. DOUBLE UP Last year, Bobo Carpenter doubled his point total from his rookie season. He put up 32 points as a sophomore on 14 goals and 18 assists after scored 16 (12g, 4a) as a freshman. MAKING LEADS LAST BU is in the past 29 games in which it has had a lead after either intermission. HOME, SWEET HOME BU is in its past 42 home contests. MAVERICKS SET BACK BU IN SWEEP Boston University suffered a pair of home losses to Minnesota State on Oct The Terriers got a pair of goals from freshman Shane Bowers but the visiting Mavericks took the opener by a score of 6-3. Minnesota State completed the sweep on Saturday with a 3-0 shutout of the Terriers. The Terriers used power plays to take leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first nine minutes of regulation on Friday but the Mavericks then reeled off four straight goals to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Mavericks got a four-point effort (1g, 3a) from junior Daniel Brickley in Friday s contest. Junior Jordan Greenway scored his first goal of the season in the opener. On Saturday, BU could not solve the Minnesota State defense. The Mavericks used a power play to open the scoring at 7:15 of the second period and then bumped their lead just over six minutes later. A late empty-netter sealed the weekend sweep. It was the first time BU had a visiting team pull off a sweep since Maine achieved the feat on Jan , 2012, with scores of 4-2 and 3-1. It was the most lopsided sweep the Terriers have suffered at home since Maine came to Walter Brown Arena on Dec. 4-5, 1987, and left with 6-2 and 7-1 victories. EARLY HONORS After a pair of three-point efforts to start off the season, sophomore Patrick Harper was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on Oct. 9. Harper tallied two goals an assist in each of the victories, beginning with a 4-1 home win over then-no. 16 Union on Sept. 30 followed by a 3-2 overtime win at then-no. 14 Quinnipiac on Oct. 8 In the opener, Harper scored twice and assisted on classmate Dante Fabbro s game-winner to top the Dutchmen. Against the Bobcats, Harper erased deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 with two more goals and then picked up the primary assist on freshman Shane Bowers overtime winner. This was the second time in as many years that Harper was named the league s Player of the Week in the opening week of the season. He also earned one Rookie of the Week honor last year. BU CLAIMS OT WIN AT QUINNIPIAC Freshman Shane Bowers poked in his own rebound with 41.1 seconds left in overtime to lift Boston University to a thrilling 3-2 road win over then-no. 14 Quinnipiac on Oct. 8. Sophomore Patrick Harper scored both of BU s goals in regulation and assisted on Bowers winner. Quinnipiac held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but Harper tied the game each time. Alex Whelan gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead at 13:49 of the opening period on a wrister from the right circle that found the far corner against sophomore goaltender Jake Oettinger. Trailing 1-0 in the second, BU got its first equalizer on a power play at 3:39 of the period as junior Bobo Carpenter had a pair of shots saved by Quinnipiac netminder Keith Petruzzelli. Harper gathered the loose puck and patiently waited for a shooting lane before snapping a shot to the back of the net. The Bobcats regained the lead 10 minutes later on a goal by Bo Pieper off a rush. The Terriers took advantage of a turnover to erase their second deficit as freshman David Farrance got the puck to Harper in the neutral zone and the sophomore split a pair of defenders at the blue line before SITUATIONAL RECORDS Under Quinn Overall Hockey East Home Away Neutral Overtime Vs. ranked teams Vs. unranked teams Vs. IN THE OPENER Sophomore Patrick Harper recorded two goals and set up classmate Dante Fabbro s game winner as Boston University kicked off its season with a 4-1 home victory over No. 16 Union at Agganis Arena on Sept. 30. The teams traded power-play goals in the opening period with the visitors striking first at 11:24 on a tally by Brett Supinski. Just over two minutes later, Harper answered with a man-up goal of his own, elevating a rebound at the left post on assists from junior Jordan Greenway and senior Nikolas Olsson. After no scoring occurred in the middle stanza, the Terriers once again used their power play to score the go-ahead goal with 7:49 remaining in regulation. Harper threaded a pass through traffic to set up a one-timer by Fabbro from the left circle that the sophomore blueliner deposited to take a 2-1 lead. Harper and freshman Shane Bowers added empty-netters to secure the victory with the rookie notching his first goal as a Terrier. The Terriers held a shot advantage, forcing junior netminder Jake Kupsky to record 39 saves for the Dutchmen. Sophomore Jake Oettinger recorded 31 saves for BU and stopped the final 27 shots he faced. BU was 2-for-5 on the power play and killed off three of Union s four chances with the man advantage. Freshman Brady Tkachuk picked up his first collegiate point when he assisted on Bowers empty-netter. Sophomore Chad Krys picked up the second helper on Fabbro s game winner. BU is now all-time in season openers. The Terriers improved to against Union and all four meetings have taken place since QUICK LOOK AT THE TERRIERS The Terriers have reloaded with an impressive freshman class after graduating four players and having three others leave early to begin their NHL careers. Amongst the top returners are a trio of forwards who all put up at least 30 points last season. Sophomore Patrick Harper is coming off an impressive rookie season in which he registered 37 points on 13 goals and 24 assists. Now upperclassmen, juniors Jordan Greenway ( ) and Bobo Carpenter ( ) will be relied on to lead the offense after strong efforts as sophomores. BU s defensive corps this season is nine deep, including seven who are NHL draft picks. That group includes three freshmen who were selected in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft. The six returnees have appeared in a combined 377 games. Brandon Hickey was elected captain of this year s squad and has been a key contributor to the BU d-corps his first three seasons, missing only seven games - all to injury - and has 40 career points (15g, 25a). Classmates John MacLeod and Brien Diffley are veterans of 96 and 80 games, respectively, and sophomores Dante Fabbro and Chad Krys will look to take the next step after impressive rookie seasons. After a stellar freshman campaign, Jake Oettinger became the first goaltender in five years to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He posted a.927 save percentage and a 2.11 goals-against average as a rookie, which ranked 10th and 12th nationally, respectively RECAP BU reached the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year and posted a double-overtime victory over defending national champion North Dakota in the West Regional before falling to Minnesota Duluth in overtime to finish the year with a record of

6 DAVID QUINN HEAD COACH BOSTON UNIVERSITY 89 FIFTH SEASON Career Record: (5th season) One of the most respected hockey coaches in the country, David Quinn is in his fifth season as the head coach at his alma mater, Boston University. Quinn has led the Terriers to three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament (2015, 2016, 2017) and orchestrated the biggest turnaround in BU hockey history in , including Hockey East and Beanpot titles and a spot in the national title game. Last season, Quinn and the Terriers earned a share of the Hockey East regularseason title before defeating defending national champion North Dakota in Fargo in the first round of the NCAA tournament. During the campaign, the Terriers enjoyed an 18-win improvement from the previous season, marking the fifth-best turnaround in NCAA men s hockey history. BU posted a record with the.744 winning percentage ranking second in the country. After leading BU to its 30th Beanpot crown, Quinn guided the Terriers to the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles before earning the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Quinn became just the fourth men s coach ever to win his first three NCAA tournament games, as the Terriers won the NCAA Northeast Regional before defeating top-ranked North Dakota in the Frozen Four to reach the NCAA title game. He was named runner-up for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the top Division I coach in the nation, and was selected as both the Hockey East and New England Coach of the Year. In each of the past three seasons, Quinn has coached at least one Terrier to All-America status. Most recently, Charlie McAvoy became just the third BU defenseman, joining Tom Poti and Bob Brown, to earn All-American First Team accolades as a sophomore. Matt Grzelcyk earned first-team honors in both 2015 and 2016 while Danny O Regan closed out his career with a second-team nod in Jack Eichel, a first-team All-American in 2015, became just the second freshman to capture the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the nation s top player. The former BU associate head coach and Colorado Avalanche assistant was named the 11th head coach in the storied history of BU hockey on March 26, Since returning to campus, Quinn and his staff have strengthened the future of the program by securing commitments from some of the very best prospects in North America. At the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in Buffalo, the Terriers tied an NCAA record with four players being selected in the first round (Clayton Keller, Charlie McAvoy, Dante Fabbro, Kieffer Bellows). Quinn, who played at BU from , replaced his former head coach and mentor, Jack Parker. An All-Hockey East and All-New England defenseman at BU and a co-captain during his senior year of , Quinn came back to campus in 2004 to become the team s associate head coach, a role he served in for five seasons. Quinn s recruiting efforts were instrumental in helping build BU s 2009 national championship team. During his time as associate head coach, he worked primarily with the team s defensemen, turning the unit into arguably the best in the nation. All six of the defensemen from the 2009 title squad have reached the National Hockey League. After helping the Terriers reach the pinnacle of college hockey, Quinn left to join the Avalanche organization as the head coach of its American Hockey League affiliate in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Monsters. He compiled a record in three seasons with Lake Erie and guided the Monsters to their first-ever playoff berth in He was named an assistant coach on former BU teammate Joe Sacco s staff at Colorado prior to this season. Quinn s coaching career, which began as an assistant at Northeastern University at 1994, has also been highlighted by several successful stints with USA Hockey. Prior to serving as the Terriers associate head coach, he spent two years as head coach of the Under-17 Team. Playing against older opponents, the U17 team qualified for the North American Hockey League playoffs for only the third time in program history, finishing with a record above.500 for the first time ever. The squad owned a 10-3 record in international play, including a first-place finish at the Four Nations Cup in Magnitogorsk, Russia, and at the Under-18 Four Nations Vlado Druzilla in Piestany, Slovakia, where the team played up an age group. For his accomplishments, USA Hockey named Quinn as the 2003 USA Hockey Developmental Coach of the Year. Quinn s coaching career began prematurely, as it was thought he would enjoy an excellent playing career both on the international and professional levels. A member of the U.S. National Junior Team that captured the bronze medal at the 1986 IIHF World Junior Championship, Quinn made himself a strong candidate for the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Teams. In addition, he was the 13th player selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft when the Minnesota North Stars made him their first-round selection. However, his hopes for an Olympic Team berth and a career in the NHL came to an end prior to his senior year at BU when he was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Christmas Disease that ultimately ended his hockey-playing career. After trying to play two seasons of professional hockey, he took the assistant position at Northeastern, where he was responsible for recruiting, off-ice conditioning, scouting and video coordination. In July 1996, Quinn was named the top assistant coach and head recruiter for the University of Nebraska Omaha. There he helped establish the school s first Division I men s ice hockey program, which began playing during the season. Quinn then joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. The program, designed to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and to develop their future hockey careers, focuses its efforts on high-caliber participation on the ice and creating well-rounded individuals off the ice. Quinn served as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at four IIHF World Championships -- two with the men s team (2007, 2012) and two with the women s squad (1999, 2000). He helped the women earn the silver medal at both tournaments and also served as an on-ice assistant at the 2001 U.S. Women s Olympic Trials and as a boys coach at the 1995 and 1996 USA Hockey Select Festivals. His involvement with the USA Hockey coaching ranks began in 1995, when he served as a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. Women s Select Camp. A native of Cranston, R.I., Quinn earned a bachelor s degree in sociology from BU in 1989.
