USHERING IN A NEW ERA Tonight s game begins a new era for the Boston University men s ice hockey program, as David Quinn enters his first regular-season game as head coach of the Terriers. After 40 years at the helm, legendary coach Jack Parker stepped down last March. Quinn was named head coach on March 26 after spending last season as an assistant coach for the NHL s Colorado Avalanche. Friday s game marks the first time someone other than Parker will be the head coach of BU s opening game since Leon Abbott in As an associate coach at BU from , Quinn helped the Terriers capture an NCAA championship in 2009, four Beanpot titles and RETURNING LEADERS ( Stats) BU Scoring Points Danny O Regan 38 Goals Danny O Regan 16 Assists Cason Hohmann 24 PPG Danny O Regan 8 GWG Danny O Regan 4 PIM Garrett Noonan 94 Shots Evan Rodrigues 91 +/- Evan Rodrigues +15 Goaltending GP Sean Maguire 21 GAA Sean Maguire 2.54 SV% Sean Maguire.926 Wins Sean Maguire 13 SO Sean Maguire 4 two Hockey East tournament championships. THE MINUTEMEN The Terriers and Minutemen first faced off with a home-and-home in late October. BU took both games, winning with a combined score of 8-4 (5-2, 3-2). Freshman center Danny O Regan recorded the first two goals of his collegiate career in the first meeting at Agganis Arena. Senior Sean Escobedo scored with only 1:22 remaining in the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock the next night at the Mullins Center. In the teams only other meeting of the season, the Minutemen dominated with a 5-1 home victory in February. SCOUTING THE MINUTEMEN This will be the Minutemen s first time on the ice this season as they did not play a preseason contest. Senior forward Branden Gracel returns after leading the Minutemen in goals (14), assists (20), points (34) and plusminus (+7) last season. Brother of former BU captain Joe Pereira, Michael Pereira returns for his senior season. Pereira recorded 13 goals and 13 assists last year. This is head coach John Micheletto s second season in charge of the UMass program. Last season, the Minutemen finished and did not qualify for the Hockey East tournament. HEAD TO HEAD [ STats] YOUTH MOVEMENT The Terriers welcome 10 incoming players to the roster this season. The nine freshmen and one redshirt sophomore account for 40 percent of the squad. The Terriers only have two juniors on the roster, forwards Cason Hohmann and Evan Rodrigues. 18 of the 25 players on the team are underclassmen. The Terriers have five seniors, including co-captains Garrett Noonan and Patrick MacGregor. TERRIER TIDBITS Only four players on BU s roster have more than four career goals at the Division I level. Junior Evan Rodrigues led all Hockey East players in plus-minus during league play last season at plus-16. Sophomore Danny O Regan tied for the Hockey East lead with Merrimack s Mike Collins last season in power-play points (13). The Terriers played nine games against ranked opponents in the 2012 portion of its schedule but the only ranked squads it faced after the turn of the new year were UMass Lowell, Boston College and Merrimack. BU is in the last 43 times it has allowed exactly two goals. 3 their opponents last 32 power-play attempts to close out the season. BU has had 23 different players record a shorthanded goal over the past five seasons. The Terriers are in their last 39 overtime games. BLUE-LINE LEADERSHIP On Oct. 4, Coach Quinn announced that senior defensemen Garrett Noonan and Patrick MacGregor would serve as co-captains for the season. Ironically, this is the first time that the Terriers have had co-captains that were both defensemen since , when Quinn and Tom Ryan - father of BU freshman T.J. Ryan - shared the captaincy. CANADIAN CREASE Covering five full seasons ( ), the Terriers have had a Canadian start in goal in each of their past 200 contests. The last American to start in goal for BU was Brett Bennett in the 2008 Hockey East semfinals against Vermont. POLL POSITION BU is No. 19 in the USCHO.com Division I preseason poll. The Terriers have neve been ranked lower to start a season in the 17-year history of the poll. COMING FROM THE COMMONWEALTH On this year s BU roster, 14 of the 25 players are from Massachusetts. Six of the nine freshmen on the BU roster are Massachusetts natives. Of the seven defensemen that dressed in last Saturday s preseason victory, five of them are from Massachusetts. LOOKING BACK AT Boston University posted a record of last season and went (31 pts.) in Hockey East play to finish in a three-way tie for third in the league standings. Third-seeded BU advanced to the Hockey East semifinals for the 11th time in 12 seasons after sweeping Merrimack at Agganis. The Terriers topped archrival Boston College, 6-3, in the league semifinals before being edged, 1-0, by UMass Lowell in the title game. BU s 21 wins were the most of any team that did not qualify for the NCAA tournament. UMass Lowell was the only Hockey East team that BU went winless against last season. After a combined five wins in January and February, the Terriers reeled off six wins in March, including five straight to reach the Hockey East championship game. Then-sophomore Evan Rodrigues was named a Hockey East Second Team All- Star and Matt Grzelcyk - a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star - and Danny O Regan were named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. O Regan tallied a team-best 38 points (16g, 22a) to become the first BU freshman since Tony Amonte in to lead the team in scoring. WELCOME ABOARD For the second consecutive year, the Terriers welcome a nine-member freshman class. BU adds six rookie forwards (Robbie Baillargeon, Brendan Collier, Kevin Duane, Tommy Kelley, Dillon Lawrence, Nick Roberto) and three rookie defensemen (Dalton MacAfee, T.J. Ryan, Doyle Somerby) to their roster this season. NHL HOPEFULS Eight of the Terriers on this year s roster have been chosen by a professional team in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. The eight players have their rights owned by eight different clubs: Robbie Baillargeon (Ottawa, 2012) Brendan Collier (Carolina, 2012) Matt Grzelcyk (Boston, 2012) Sam Kurker (St. Louis, 2012) Sean Maguire (Pittsburgh, 2012) Danny O Regan (San Jose, 2012) Garrett Noonan (Nashville, 2011) Doyle Somerby (N.Y. 5 DAVID QUINN HEAD COACH BOSTON UNIVERSITY 89 FIRST SEASON Former Boston University associate head coach and Colorado Avalanche assistant David Quinn was named the 11th head coach in the storied history of the Boston University men s ice hockey program on March 26, Quinn, who played at BU from , replaced his former head coach and mentor, Jack Parker, who announced his retirement after 40 seasons at the helm of the Terrier program. An All-Hockey East and All-New England defenseman at BU and a cocaptain during his senior year of , Quinn came back to campus in 2004 to become the team s associate head coach, a role he served in for five seasons. Quinn s recruiting efforts were instrumental in helping build BU s 2009 national championship team. During his time as associate head coach, he worked primarily with the team s defensemen, turning the unit into arguably the best in the nation. All six of the defensemen from the 2009 title squad have reached the National Hockey League. After helping the Terriers reach the pinnacle of college hockey, Quinn left to join the Avalanche organization as the head coach of its American Hockey League affiliate in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Monsters. He compiled a record in three seasons with Lake Erie and guided the Monsters to their first-ever playoff berth in He was named an assistant coach on former BU teammate Joe Sacco s staff at Colorado prior to this season. Quinn s coaching career, which began as an assistant at Northeastern University at 1994, has also been highlighted by several successful stints with USA Hockey. Prior to serving as the Terriers associate head coach, he spent two years as head coach of the Under-17 Team. Playing against older opponents, the U17 team qualified for the North American Hockey League playoffs for only the third time in program history, finishing with a record above.500 for the first time ever. The squad owned a 10-3 record in international play, including a first-place finish at the Four Nations Cup in Magnitogorsk, Russia, and at the Under18 Four Nations Vlado Druzilla in Piestany, Slovakia, where the team played up an age group. For his accomplishments, USA Hockey named Quinn as the 2003 USA Hockey Developmental Coach of the Year. Quinn s coaching career began prematurely, as it was thought he would enjoy an excellent playing career both on the international and professional levels. A member of the U.S. National Junior Team that captured the bronze medal at the 1986 IIHF World Junior Championship, Quinn made himself a strong candidate for the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Teams. In addition, he was the 13th player selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft when the Minnesota North Stars made him their first-round selection. However, his hopes for an Olympic Team berth and a career in the NHL came to an end prior to his senior year at BU when he was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Christmas Disease that ultimately ended his hockey- playing career. After trying to play two seasons of professional hockey, he took the assistant position at Northeastern, where he was responsible for recruiting, off-ice conditioning, scouting and video coordination. In July 1996, Quinn was named the top assistant coach and head recruiter for the University of Nebraska Omaha. There he helped establish the school s first Division I men s ice hockey program, which began playing during the season. Quinn then joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. The program, designed to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and to develop their future hockey careers, focuses its efforts on high-caliber participation on the ice and creating well-rounded individuals off the ice. Quinn served as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at four IIHF World Championships -- two with the men s team (2007, 2012) and two with the women s squad (1999, 2000). He helped the women earn the silver medal at both tournaments and also served as an on-ice assistant at the 2001 U.S. Women s Olympic Trials and as a boys coach at the 1995 and 1996 USA Hockey Select Festivals. His involvement with the USA Hockey coaching ranks began in 1995, when he served as a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. Women s Select Camp. A native of Cranston, R.I., Quinn earned a bachelor s degree in sociology from BU in 1989.
