3 3 4 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 1 :: The Maryland Terrapins have won more national championships than any other program in the country with 10. From , the Terps captured seven consecutive national titles which is the third longest women s championship streak in NCAA history. In four of those seasons, the Terrapins finished with an undefeated record, something that has only been done four other times, each by a different team. Maryland s nine NCAA championships ranks sixth all-time in women s history. COACHING STAFF 2 :: Maryland boasts one of the best coaching staffs in the country. Head coach Cathy Reese, entering her second season leading her alma mater, returned the Terps to the national scene in 2007 as they reached the quarterfinals for the first time since As a student-athlete at Maryland, the Terps did not lose in her first two seasons and they did not lose until midway through her junior campaign. In all, Reese and the Terps won 50-straight games without a loss. In her playing career, Reese guided the Terps to an incredible 75-4 record. In her first three seasons as assistant coach, the Terps went Her total record with Maryland in her first nine seasons was Reese was a two-time All-America selection as a player. Associate head coach Jen Adams is arguably one of the greatest women to ever play the game. She is the all-time NCAA leader in assists and points with 178 and 445, respectively. Both her and Reese played on four national championship teams. She was a three-time national player of the year and was the first-ever winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy. As a senior, she was the national leader in both goals and assists. Adams was one of five Maryland student-athletes named to the Division I Women s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team last April. Newcomers to the staff this year include Lauri Kenis and Katie Chrest. Kenis helped Virginia to a pair of NCAA finals appearances and also led them to two berths in the ACC finals. She ranks third all-time in Virginia history with 107 caused turnovers. Chrest, who had a stellar four-year career at Duke, was a three-time All-American and two-time ACC Player of the Year. With the addition of Chrest, the Terrapins are now the only women s lacrosse team in the nation to have two Tewaaraton Trophy recipients on their staff. ALL-AMERICANS 3 :: Since 1980, a total of 70 Maryland student-athletes have earned All-America accolades with a remarkable 37 of them being recognized more than once in their careers. Current associate head coach Jen Adams became the first-ever recipient of the Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the nation s top player. Senior Dana Dobbie was a first team All-American in 2007 and was a finalist for the Tewaaraton as well. THE PREMIER CONFERENCE 4 :: The Atlantic Coast Conference, year in and year out, is the best women s lacrosse conference in the nation. Since 1990, an ACC team has played in the national championship game 16 out of the last 18 seasons, culminating in 11 NCAA titles. In 2008, three ACC teams are ranked in the top four in the preseason with Virginia, Duke, and the Terps following top-ranked Northwestern. North Carolina is also in the top 10 coming in at No. 8.

4 2005 W0RLD CUP In 2005, the International Federation of Women s Lacrosse Associations World Cup was played in Annapolis, Md. With so many players having ties to the University of Maryland, the World Cup had a distinct Terrapin flavor. At the championships, which were won by Australia, a total of 13 former and currentterrapin lacrosse players represented their respective countries. The champion Aussies featured seven Terrapin players, including Jen Adams (2001), Sarah Forbes (1997), Courtney Hobbs (2002), Sonia Judd (2003), Casey Magor (current), Tess McLeod (2004), and Sascha Newmarch (1998). In addition, five members of the American team played lacrosse in College Park. Among them were Quinn Carney (2001), Randall Goldsborough (1996), Kelly Amonte Hiller (1996), Kristin Sommar (2000), and Jess Wilk (1990). Finally, Laura Warren (2004) was a starting attacker for the Welsh team. On the 12-member All-World Team, seven of those hailed from the University of Maryland. Of the 20 games played at the World Cup in which a Maryland Terrapin was on the roster, a Terp player was recognized as Player of the Match nine times. Forbes was named the tournament s Most Valuable Player for her efforts for the Aussies. Adams was the leading scorer among all players at the World Cup with 47 points on 21 goals and 26 assists. Her 26 assists set a new World Cup Record. NATIONAL TEAM EXPERIENCE Maryland has a rich history of sending its players to the national level with five players currently representing the United States at the Elite and Developmental level. Quinn Carney (2001) and Acacia Walker (2005) are current members of the Elite team and join a lengthy list of former Terps to don the stars and stripes. They are two of 20 former players that have seen time on the US National Team which includes such alumni as current head coach Cathy Reese, Northwestern head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, and Alex Kahoe. Becky Clipp (2007), Katie Doolittle (2007) and sophomore Caitlyn McFadden were named to the Developmental team in August of 2007 which is the second most of any school in the nation. 5 ALEX KAHOE CINDY TIMCHAL SARAH FORBES 25TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM On April 13, 2006, the NCAA announced its Division I Women s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team. There were 13 women chosen to the team as 12 student-athletes and one coach were selected to represent the best NCAA women's lacrosse has ever seen. The Maryland Terrapins were extremely well-represented as six women involved with the Terp program were honored. Princeton and Virginia had the next most selections with two each. Topping the list of student-athletes on the team is Jen Adams who played in College Park from Adams is the all-time NCAA leader in career assists (178) and points (445) and was a national player of the year selection three times. In 2001, she became the first winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy. Adams holds every single season and career record at Maryland and won four national championships in her time as a Terp. 6 6 SEASON OUTLOOK TERPS RETURN 73 PERCENT OF SCORING FROM 2007 Maryland, which had the eighth most potent offense in the country in 2007, returns 73 percent of its scoring from last season (320 of the 439 points). Leading the way in 2008 is returning first team All-American Dana Dobbie, who was also a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy. The Terps will also have the services of another All-American in Kelly Kasper as well as the leadership of 10 seniors spread throughout every position of the field. Our senior class is very strong, head coach Cathy Reese said. We have a lot of talent returning on both ends of the field. Not only that, the Terps will have more depth this year than teams in the past. We have a lot of depth this season, Reese added. We will have a lot of people on the bench that we can turn to who can take the field with the team not missing a step. With experience and playmakers on all sides of the field, Maryland will look to return to the postseason for the 19th straight season and make a run to the national championship that has eluded it since ATTACK Maryland usually features one of the most prolific offenses in the nation and this season should be no different. Returning All-American Dana Dobbie, one of the best scorers in the country, leads the offense that ranked eighth in the country in The Terps lost their top scorer in Krista Pellizzi who scored 55 goals and and 21 assists, but the top six producers following her all return to College Park. Our attack has a lot of experience returning with Katie Princiotto, Casey Magor, and Lauren Cohen, Reese said. We have a lot of experience on our offensive end while adding several new faces who will step up and be ready to contribute this season. Cohen had a breakout year in 2007 with 33 goals and 15 assists after scoring just eight points combined in her first two seasons. Both Cohen and Dobbie have strong one-onone attacking skills and can create offensive opportunities under pressure. Princiotto also stepped up in 2007 on the offensive end. She was not a stranger to scoring goals as she recorded 21 as a sophomore in 2006, but last year, she led the Terps with 26 assists while still adding in 19 goals. The experience on attack does not end there though as Magor is back for her final season at Maryland. She started every game she played in last season and she added 33 goals and 13 assists. Magor was productive in every game, scoring a point in all 20 contests. DANA DOBBIE KATIE PRINCIOTTO CAITLYN MCFADDEN KATIE PUMPHREY Maryland will have a lot of depth on attack and will be able to use different schemes and combinations throughout the season. Kate Faas, a transfer from St. Bonaventure, joins the Terps in 2008 and is the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year after recording 54 goals and 14 assists in just 15 games last season. With Faas skills, she should immediately impact the team on the offensive end. Other returners for Maryland include senior Chelsea Kapp, juniors Jenny Collins and Alex Mavris, and sophomore Ali Perkins who all saw time last year. Perkins recorded four goals and six assists, Collins pitched in with two goals, and Mavris had a goal and an assist. A number of newcomers will also get into the mix on the offensive end with freshmen Ellen Cook and Colleen Dawson. The Terps also have a trio of sister combinations all across the field. On offense, it is Taylor and Meredith Zanelotti. Taylor rejoins the team for the 2008 season while Meredith joins the red and black as a freshman. We will have a very balanced scoring attack so all seven of our attackers, no matter the combination, can score, Reese said. I really believe that we have that with this team. Our offense will be exciting to watch this season. MIDFIELD The midfield will once again be vital to the Terps and is another strong point on the field. Two of Maryland s senior captains this year, Dobbie and Kasper, anchor the middle of the field. Their experience and skill makes the Terp midfield one of the best in the nation. Dobbie and Kasper are a devastating duo. Dobbie, a draw control specialist, ranked fourth in the nation with 3.95 draws per game in She was named the 2007 ACC Player of the Year in her first season in the conference with 53 goals and 16 assists. She also caused 24 turnovers and picked up 39 ground balls. Kasper, an All-American in 2007, is a force everywhere on the field. She was third in points on the team last season with 26 goals and 22 assists and led the team with 31 caused turnovers. She also picked up 28 draw controls and 24 ground balls. Our midfield is very strong with Kelly and Dana leading the group, Reese said. They are leaders on the field by example as they are very strong on both ends, have good stick skills and great field sense. Another star in the making at midfield is sophomore Caitlyn McFadden. As a freshman in 2007, she started all 20 games and recorded 18 goals and 17 assists. The Phoenix, Md.

7 7 native had 29 draw controls, 27 ground balls, and 21 caused turnovers and is a member of the United States Developmental Team. Caitlyn is strong and fast in the midfield, Reese said. She has the confidence and game experience at this level and comes into this season as a leader. She will be up and back on both ends contributing at the midfield. Sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber will see an increased role for the Terps this year. She played in 17 games last year and notched 10 goals and three assists. Her 10 goals came on just 17 shots for the best shooting percentage on the squad. A few newcomers that will make their presence known right away are Laura Merrifield from England and Sarah Mollison from Australia, who are both members of their respective country s national teams. The second sister combination for the Terps is Brandi and Brittany Jones. Brandi enters this year as a freshman while Brittany is a junior transfer from Cal Poly. Reese has a plethera of options to use at midfield and many different combinations could be utilized. Adding more depth to the midfield ranks is freshman Helen McCutcheon. DEFENSE Senior captain Katie Pumphrey will lead the Terps defense into the 2008 season. Pumphrey solidified her spot on the Maryland defense in 2007 as she started 19 of the 20 games she played in. She was fourth on the team with 34 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers. With Pumphrey as the only returning starter, Maryland will rely on some new faces to step up. Our defense is exciting this year, Reese said. We have several spots to fill and with that, we have seen a lot of great things this fall from many of our players. Our depth defensively is much stronger than it has been. You will see some new faces in there and lots of contributors. Sophomores Katie Gallagher and Karissa Taylor have both really been stepping up in the offseason. Freshmen Alexcia Niumatalolo and Sara Cooper have also been impressing as well as Mindy Jones and Marie Moorman. Taylor played an important reserve role for the Terps last year on defense playing in 16 games. She uses her great speed to disrupt her opponents in one-on-one situations. Others that will be used on the back line include returners Megan Cassara, Maeve McKew, and Maggie Stout. The Terps also add transfers Abby Caso from William & Mary and Megan McGarvey from Ohio to the roster. Our defense is fast and extremely atheltic and will be a strength for us in 2008, Reese said. KELLY KASPER ALLIE BUOTE LAUREN COHEN CASEY MAGOR GOALIE A place where the Terps know they can rely on solid play is in the cage with senior Allie Buote returning for her third season as the starter. Last year, she racked up 167 saves for a.469 save percentage. As a senior goalie, Allie is stepping up to anchor this defense, Reese said. Her instruction and communication skills go a long way especially with the younger players. Our defense this year will be fast, aggressive, smart, and composed and Allie will be a big part of that. Juniors Lynne Cooper and Sarah Sommaripa will back up Buote in goal, both seeing time in four contests in SCHEDULE The Terps will face six teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, including four non-conference opponents that qualified for postseason play along with ACC foes Duke and Virginia. Maryland opens the season on Friday, February 22 when it heads to Amherst to take on Massachusetts. The Terps then open conference play when they travel the Mass Pike to face Boston College on February 24. The matchup against the Eagles is the first of three straight ACC contests as Maryland then faces Duke, a 2007 Final Four team, in Durham, N.C. on March 1. The home portion of the schedule begins with on March 4 with Virginia, which lost to Northwestern in the national title game, and begins a season-long four game home stretch. The Terps and James Madison renew their rivalry and will play each other for the first time since 2003 on March 8 in College Park. Two more non-conference opponents come to College Park to conclude the homestand in Richmond and Dartmouth on March 12 and 15, respectively. The Spiders also advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year. Maryland travels to Johns Hopkins and then to Stanford for the first time on March 17 and 22, respectively, before returning home to rekindle its series with Towson on March 26. The annual ACC/ALC Challenge will be on April 4 and 6 in Chapel Hill, N.C. where the Terps will take on Penn State and Ohio State. Maryland returns to Chapel Hill on April 12 to face North Carolina, an NCAA quarterfinalist in 2007, before returning home for games against Georgetown and Virginia Tech on April 16 and 19, respectively. The 2008 ACC Championship will be held from April at Virginia s Klockner Stadium. Before the NCAA Tournament begins on May 11, the Terps will take on Princeton on April 30 and Loyola on May 3. Princeton advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year. The semifinals and final of the NCAA Tournament will be held at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson and are set for May 23 and 25.

8 8 CATHY REESE SECOND SEASON AT MARYLAND FIFTH SEASON OVERALL MARYLAND 98 Former Maryland standout Cathy Reese enters her second season at the helm of the Terrapins women s lacrosse program after revitalizing a team hungry to return to the national forefront. Reese returned to her alma mater in 2007 as the head coach and guided the Terps to a 16-4 record, including a first-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 4-1, earning the conference s Coach of the Year award. Maryland had bowed out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round the previous two seasons, but Reese s Terps advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2004 and had the most wins since Included in those 16 wins were a pair against teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country against North Carolina and Duke, respectively. Reese s guidance produced more than just team success. Dana Dobbie was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the nation s best player, and was the ACC Player of the Year. In addition, Dobbie along with Becky Clipp, Kelly Kasper, and Krista Pellizzi were named All-Americans. Reese returned to Maryland after spending her first three seasons as head coach at the University of Denver where she guided the Pioneers to their most successful season in school history in Denver finished that year with a 16-5 record and rattled off 11-straight wins over the course of 43 days. The 11-game win streak was more victories than the school had seen in an entire season as its eight wins in 2003 was the most in a season for the Pioneers prior to For a program that saw limited success since its inception in 1999, Reese proved that she is a winner. With a 4-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) record, the Pioneers won its first-ever regular season championship in For her efforts, Reese was named the 2006 MPSF Coach of the Year. In addition, two of her student-athletes were also given season-ending awards as Denver sweeped the conference accolades. Kristie Leggio was tabbed the Player of the Year and Karen Morton was the Newcomer of the Year. Leggio, Stephanie Greenlees, and Kelly O Connell were each recognized as all-regional performers in It was the first time in program history that a Pioneer student-athlete was recognized by the IWLCA/US Lacrosse committee. In her three seasons in the Mile High City, 11 student-athletes were named to the All-MPSF Team. Not only did her students excel on the field, but they also achieved in the classroom as Denver student-athletes were named to the Academic All- Conference team 11 times. Prior to lifting the Denver program to national attention, Reese spent nine seasons in College Park, four as a student-athlete and five as an assistant coach. During that span, the women s lacrosse program had one of the most successful streaks seen in collegiate women s sports history. The Terps won seven national championships in her first nine years on campus. That is the third-longest streak in women s NCAA history in any sport. When Reese first stepped foot on campus as a freshman, it was impossible to gauge how successful she and the Terps would be. Maryland did not lose in her first two seasons as a student-athlete, and it did not lose until midway through her junior campaign. In all, Reese and the Terps went 50-straight games without a loss. In her playing career, Reese guided the Terps to an incredible 75-4 record. In her first three seasons as assistant coach, the Terps went Her total record with Maryland in her first nine seasons was The Terps also made the NCAA quarterfinals in 2002 and advanced to the national semifinals in 2003 before Reese took the reins at Denver. As a student-athlete from , she was a two-time All-America selection. As a senior, she was tabbed the NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player and was the second-leading scorer on that championship team with 58 goals and 25 assists. She finished her career with 140 goals, 77 assists, and 217 points. Her 77 assists is tied for eighth all-time at Maryland and her 217 points is 11th. Reese graduated in 1998 with a degree in speech communications. She and her husband, Brian, have two children, Riley, who is three years old, and Brody, who was born September 24, She is pregnant with her third child, a girl, and is due on March 11. 9 9 JEN ADAMS ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON MARYLAND, 01 Jen Adams came over from Denver with Reese in the fall of 2006 and serves as the associate head coach. Adams served as the top assistant under Reese at Denver for three seasons. Adams is arguably the greatest collegiate women s lacrosse player in the sport s history. She is the all-time NCAA leader in assists and points with 178 and 445, respectively. She owns every Maryland scoring record as she is the single season and career leader in goals, assists, and points. Like Reese, she played on four national championship teams.
