THE MATCH-UP...The Gustavus men s hockey team is set to take on St. Norbert College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men s Hockey Tournament on Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cornerstone Community Center located in Green Bay, Wis. Eighth-ranked Gustavus earned a trip to the quarterfinal round by way of a 3-1 victory over sixthranked Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday night in St. Peter, Minn. Fifth-ranked St. Norbert, the regular season and playoff champion of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Conference, is in the quarterfinals after defeating St. Thomas 3-1 in its first round match-up on Wednesday night in Green Bay. Gustavus enters Saturday s contest at overall, while St. Norbert comes in at As is the case most seasons, the road from the west to the Frozen Four usually ends up going through St. Norbert. This year, it is no different. Although the Gusties have enjoyed the luxury of strong fan support at Don Roberts Ice RInk through their playoff run, Saturday s game at the Cornerstone Community Center will be a different story, as the Gusties head into one of the most hostile environments in all of Division III hockey. With a trip to Lake Placid on the line, a dog fight is sure to ensue as Gustavus goes up against the defending National Champion Green Knights. GUSTAVUS COVERAGE... Brett Petersen is currently in his 12th season at the head of Gustavus men s hockey program. Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. Coach Petersen is assisted by Jared Phillips (Gustavus `03) and Aaron Hoiland (St. Thomas). At the head of the St. Nortbert men s hockey program is 19-year Head Coach Tom Coghlin. Coghlin received his bachelor s degree in communications at UW-Stevens Point in 1989, then later went on to receive his master s degree in education at UW-Stevens Point in Coach Coghlin is assisted by associate head coach A.J. Aitken (Michigan Tech `00), and assistant coaches Tommy Cianflone (St. Norbert `00), Ryan Wempe (`02), and Mark Mazzoleni (Michigan State `80). AROUND THE GLOBE...The Gustavus Adolphus men s hockey team features 22 players who previously played junior hockey on 14 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen s squad features players from six states; Minnesota (19), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden. The St. Norbert roster features players who are natives of seven U.S. States, five Canadian Provinces, Sweden, and Slovakia; Wisconsin (5), Minnesota (1), Pennsylvania (1), Alabama (1), Illinois (1), Nevada (1), Michigan (1), Alberta (4), Saskatchewan (3), Ontario (3), Yukon Territory (1), British Columbia (1), Sweden (3), and Slovakia (1). HOW WE GOT HERE... After allowing the opening goal of the game at the 6:41 mark of the first period, the Gustavus men s hockey team would go on to score three unanswered goals and hold No. 6 MSOE scoreless for the remaining minutes for a 3-1 win. Senior Ross Ring-Jarvi offered a quick response to MSOE s opening tally, scoring less than two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Gustavus special teams came up big from that point on, blanking the Raiders on five power play tries and registering the game-winner on the power play when Ryan Johnson scored at the 4:00 mark of the second period. Although he was challenged just 17 times in the game, freshman goaltender John McLean was once again the difference-maker with several key saves in the third period. In what was a very similar game to the one going on in St. Peter, St. Norbert also responded with three unanswered goals after St. Thomas grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the first period. After Zach McDonald tied the game at 1-1 in the second period, Cody Keefer scored the eventual gamewinner at 16:33 of the frame then later added an insurance goal at 10:31 to bring the score to a final at 3-1. Green Knight goaltender David Jacobson made 24 saves, as the St. Norbert penalty kill shut out the Tommies on six power play chances. THE SERIES... Saturday night s contest will be the 26th meeting between Gustavus an St. Norbert in men s hockey. St. Norbert holds the advantage in the all-time series with a mark of In the recent history between the two teams, Gustavus handed St. Norbert its only loss of the season with a 4-2 win at the Cornerstone Community Center. The Green Knights went on to win the NCAA Championship that season. Since that win, Gustavus is against St. Norbert including a 3-1 in the only NCAA Playoff meeting between the two teams on March 13th, The two squads skated to a 2-2 tie on St. Norbert s home ice earlier this season on Nov. 4. After goals by Zach May and Gustav Bengtson put Gustavus up 2-0 in the second period, the Green Knight s responded with

3 GAME NOTES a pair of power play goals in the second to tie the game at 2-2. St. Norbert outshot Gustavus with 30 of those shots coming in the opening 40 minutes of the game. All-Time: Last 10 Games: THE SERIES NCAA PLAYOFF HISTORY...The Gustavus men s hockey team is currently in its sixth NCAA Division III Men s Hockey Tournament appearance. The Gusties are in NCAA post-season play, making the dance in 1990, 1991, 1993, 2009, and 2010 prior to this year. Coach Brett Petersen has led the Gusties to all four wins, including a run to the NCAA Championship game in 2009 following a 16-year absence from the tournament. St. Norbert is in its 13th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Green Knights carry an NCAA playoff record of coming into the weekend. With National Championships in 2008 and 2011, St. Norbert has made seven Frozen Fours, and is 10-1 in its last 11 NCAA Tournament games. RANK AND FILE... The Gustavus men s hockey team moved up in the national polls once again, entering the week ranked No. 8 according to the most recent USCHO.com Division III Men s Poll. The Gusties have been ranked inside the top-15 the past four weeks, moving up three spots from last week s No. 11 ranking. The Black and Gold is also ranked No. 10 according to the most recent D3hockey.com Men s Top-15 Poll. St. Norbert entered the week ranked No. 5 on the USCHO.com DIII Men s Poll. A staple of the top-15, St. Norbert has been ranked for 189 consecutive weeks. BIG JOHN STAYS HOT... Fresh off being named MIAC Men s Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week for the second time this season on Monday, rookie netminder refused to have a letdown in Gustavus first round NCAA Playoff game against MSOE on Wednesday night. Although he was credited for just 16 saves on the scoresheet, McLean once again got better as the game went on. After seeing just six shots (allowing one goal) in the opening 40 minutes, the freshman made 11 saves in the third period to keep the Gusties in front. The Eagan, Minn. product was also recently named to the MIAC Men s Hockey All-Rookie Team. FROSH VS. FROSH... Saturday s contest will feature two of the brightest young stars coming up through the Division III ranks. It just so happens that the two up-and-comers will square off between the pipes at either ends of the ice. Gustavus freshman John McLean will go for Gustavus, while rookie David Jacobson will get the call for St. Norbert. McLean enters the weekend ranked inside the top-15 in Division III in save percentage and goals against average. At overall, the rookie netminder carries a.924 save percentage (13th/NCAA) and a 2.07 goals against average (11th/NCAA). McLean s 15 wins this season are the second-most in the country among freshman goaltenders, sitting behind his Saturday counterpart David Jacobson s nation-leading record of With four shutouts (2nd/NCAA) to his credit, Jacobson enters with the third-ranked goals against average (1.61) and fourth-ranked save percentage (9.33). After an unforgettable four years donning a Gustavus sweater, senior Ross Ring- Jarvi (Anoka, Minn.) was rewarded with the MIAC s top honor this week, being named the MIAC Player-of-the-Year by a vote of the league s coaches. In the storied 75-year history of Golden Gustie hockey, Ring Jarvi becomes just the third payer to earn All-Conference honors four times, joining the likes of Pat McKusky ( ) and Steve Hanson ( ). Others receiving votes: Wentworth 34, Wisconsin- River Falls 27, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 11, Plymouth State 9, St. Scholastica 2, Utica 2, Williams 1.

4 GAME NOTES Displaying an undeniable physical presence and play-making ability on every shift, Ring-Jarvi has been the model of hard work and durability over his career at Gustavus. A staple of Coach Petersen s top line for four seasons, the Anoka product has earned the Iron Man award after playing in all 114 games of his collegiate career, ranking fifth in Gustavus history. Ringo s 129 career points (46G, 83A) ranks 18th at Gustavus. Wednesday night s 3-1 win over MSOE also marked Ross s final game at Don Roberts Ice rink. The senior relished in the moment, scoring a gametying goal in the first period and finishing with three points after adding a pair of assists on Gustavus second and third goals. Ringo has led the Gusties to a near perfect 8-1 playoff record at home during his four years on the hill. FIRST GOAL... It was a scary moment for the Gusties on Wednesday night when MSOE s Todd Krupa tallied the opening goal of the game at the 6:41 mark of the first period. Scary because the Raiders came into the game unbeaten with a record of when scoring first this season. The Gusties responded with three unanswered goals to snap MSOE s streak of first goal victories. VS. THE NCHA... Gustavus enters Saturday s duel with a record against representatives of the NCHA this season. It is the first time in Head Coach Brett Petersen s tenure that his Gusties finished the regular season unbeaten against their neighbors from the east. Coach Petersen has compiled a record of against the NCHA in his 12-year career behind the Gustavus bench. STREAKING... St. Norbert and Gustavus currently have the third longest winning-streak in the country. Both squads are unbeaten in their last eight games, as St. Norbert is and Gustavus is INTO THE SNAKE PIT... Gustavus will hit the road for the first time in four games when it travels to eastern Wisconsin this weekend. Although the environment has been hostile for visitors in St. Peter throughout the playoff stretch, it is nothing compared to the home ice advantage enjoyed by the Green Knights.
